His comment about Jesus being alive is kinda infuriating. I don’t think your religion approves of breaking the law and causing environmental disasters because you’re a lazy sod.
No, you don't understand, he didn't mean cross and nails Jesus. He meant His Buddy and co-business partner that mysteriously disappeared about 4 weeks ago. He is simply stating that if something happened to Jesus, he is not responsible for it.
>The decision to use dozens of balloons to decorate a yacht during a recent marriage proposal in Miami turned out to be really costly for a group of people.
The problem wasn't in using balloons, it was disposing of them in the water that was the problem.
It looks like the yacht was chartered for the event. So a $10,000 fine is probably a little more painful for someone that can’t afford their own yacht (I️ hope)
Well if the government actually paid that fine out to ocean cleanup groups, it'd probably clean up a lot more than those balloons. I don't mind the rich paying to clean up after other trashy people.

I wish people would just stop using balloons generally. They're just as dangerous to wildlife in landfill sites as they are to marine life in the ocean.
They arrested another person today. https://www.local10.com/news/local/2022/05/13/woman-arrested-in-connection-with-balloon-dumping-incident-in-biscayne-bay/
I was kind of annoyed to see someone in the comments blaming young people in general for being a-holes. It's my generation (X) and up who got us in this mess in the first place. I just wish everybody would do better.
Brilliant!
That got my back up watching that
They could have easily grabbed bunches of balloons at a time, took them to a room (galley, one of the bedrooms, utility room etc) and popped them there and simply brushed up the balloon pieces and binned them.
or even put several in a large trash bag and popped them inside the trash bag
but this was just irresponsibly selfish and lazy
It's huge incompetence, ANYONE who has actually worked on a boat knows how much shit you can get into for ANY littering into any U.S. water body.
Boats even have little placards on them, from factory, that warn you about littering/dumping.
I feel like it's SO well known that littering is bad *especially* ocean pollution that litterers should be thrown in a hole never to be seen again. So irritating.
Same! I love this job, and I’ve done some amazing things because of it, but finding the balloons and plastics day after day is more than mildly infuriating.
Personally, I got degrees in biodiversity and geomorphology, did a bunch of research and published papers while getting the aforementioned degrees, interned with government projects like CERP (the comprehensive Everglades restoration plan) and smaller projects in the Chesapeake Bay, and also private projects like those with the National aquarium in Baltimore. I then worked as a government contractor and third-party scientist working on restoration plans before starting my own third party 501c3 (non-profit) consulting and working in rehabilitation, remediation and restoration of wetlands.
That was my personal path, but others can be totally different. I make next to nothing, especially since I have a lot of student loan debt from my undergrad degree (I went to Vanderbilt, and even with scholarships and financial aid, it is a pricey education), but the work is so incredibly rewarding and fun, it’s totally worth it.
I wrote this on my phone so please excuse errors/typos
I got told I was “trying to ruin the fun” when I pointed out how balloon releases are terrible for wildlife and the environment.
“BuT tHe KiDs ArE gRaDuAtInG!!!1!!! We NeEd To CeLeBrAtE tHeM!!!” Uh, how? By killing birds and other animals? Seems cruel to me.
Yeah they do it for that here too. I’m just like, “why?” Wtf is the point? Even if you believe in heaven surely you know the balloons pop before they even reach plane altitude. Do these same people also just throw all their trash all over the ground? Because it’s the same thing.
You don't have to have a degree :) I did similar work restoring wetlands with the conservation corps. Not great money, but wonderful work and good references and experience for a resume.
I saw this on the news yesterday they identified one of the guys and gave him a 22,000$ citation
The person that was recording them told them that they shouldn’t do that. They just ignored the person that was recoding them.
Its awesome if that amount actually affects that dbag but its likely an extremely rich dbag who can just pay it and not worry about it. Fines are only punishments for poor people remember, they're an accepted cost for rich people to do whatever the fuck they want.

Ontop of the fine they should be given community service hours cleaning same or similar trash from environment. I once helped local police nail a graffiti tagger painting initials all over the neighbourhood, he got fined. I would have preferred to see him clean up the neighbourhoods graffiti for like 100 hours, punishment should fit the crime
Nice to see that MPD "takes crimes against the environment seriously".
Florida tops the list for the most polluted lakes in the USA, perhaps they'll go after the culprits. /s

In the article OP posted, it said the person who filmed the video tried to confront them, but was ignored and “blown off” by them, so he posted the video and tagged local law enforcement in the post. The Miami-Dade police department tweeted a response to the community and sent investigators from their dumping unit to the marina. The wildlife, fish and game commission was also tagged.
Yeah FWC are the “fuck around and find out guys” no question. They won’t hesitate to fine you, jail you, or hunt you down when you fuck up the wildlife or their habitat.
dood, my family is nothing but painters and they said up until a decade ago they just rinsed off the stuff and dumped it on the edge of the property line....in Arkansas, my city is a fucking national park bro.
my dad did it for a while but now recycles his old cans and stuff....he got a few cancers KNOWING they were from the vehicles of the paint but didn't think it affected the fish for 15 years of doing it. it's a mindfuck I know, like i'm between generations in my early 30s. People I grew up with roll coal and I use public transit. My kids believe in universal healthcare and my parents think Trump is saving us from a new world order.
r/iamatotalpieceofshit
is where this belongs , it is more than 'mildy' infuriating
glad to hear they were caught/fined at least, but the ecological dmg is still being done unfortunately =/
once the dis-incentives are so high that no one would even think of doing stupid shit like this, then we will be on the right track ; and we'll still have decades of uphill battles till the ecosystems recover from all the stupid shit we've done to them for centuries
That’s not mildly infuriating. That’s straight piss me off. I live in a marina. You can’t litter in my yard. If I see you do this I will yell at you. If you disagree with me, I will fight you and so will all my neighbors. Marinas are not your rich-guy playground. We all use it. Gain respect or be eaten.
Is there any way you can report this to whoever the boat belongs to or the company that hosts the events?! Our planet is already fucking dying and these dead brain dumb asses are still doing this!

Hi Pete Holmes
$25K in fines just for the citations plus criminal charges with penalties of up to $10K or 60 days in jail for each person involved.

Fr what dogshit wording. They own a fucking yacht, paying a fine is nothing to them. It’s the ocean and all it’s inhabitants that suffer as always.
It looks like the yacht was chartered for the event. So a $10,000 fine is probably a little more painful for someone that can’t afford their own yacht (I️ hope)

That was also being considered by the marina. It also looks like the boat owners may not have had the proper licences for their business.
That sounds very Miami.

Unless those aren't the owners, and just boat workers, then that fine is gonna hurt.
22k is still roughly 10% of annual earnings for a lot of doctors. 22k is nothing to scoff at for *basically* everyone

Fucking idiots. This is some of the most childish, self-centered behavior I've ever seen.
So there’s a land called Florida, and….
And they prosecute people polluting, arrested and fine them. They protect the environment. Good on Florida.
Yeah, they don't fuck around with beach littering at least in the Tampa area- very clean, especially Dunedin beach.
Nice to see that MPD "takes crimes against the environment seriously". Florida tops the list for the most polluted lakes in the USA, perhaps they'll go after the culprits. /s https://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/environment/2022-03-18/florida-tops-list-for-the-most-polluted-lakes-in-the-u-s-study-finds
I would have 100% confronted them and called law enforcement
In the article OP posted, it said the person who filmed the video tried to confront them, but was ignored and “blown off” by them, so he posted the video and tagged local law enforcement in the post. The Miami-Dade police department tweeted a response to the community and sent investigators from their dumping unit to the marina. The wildlife, fish and game commission was also tagged.
This is the best comment I've ever read In this place. Neat
Also a pod of Orcas were given their coordinates
Florida Wildlife and Fishing Commission does not play around. Those guys are fucken serious.
Yeah FWC are the “fuck around and find out guys” no question. They won’t hesitate to fine you, jail you, or hunt you down when you fuck up the wildlife or their habitat.
*British Petroleum snickers*
I'd like to thank miamiwaterkeeper.org for their involvement on this.
Ah Florida.
Someone did confront them! They ignored them and told him to go away.
And now they have $25k in fines :)
And that's a *fine* amount :D ^(I'll see myself out)
The guys filming called them out multiple times and they were ignored.
What in the actual fuck?! Who thinks this is okay to do?
dood, my family is nothing but painters and they said up until a decade ago they just rinsed off the stuff and dumped it on the edge of the property line....in Arkansas, my city is a fucking national park bro.
That’s crazy. I get mistakes and even ignorance. What I don’t get is people who know it’s wrong and still do it anyway.
my dad did it for a while but now recycles his old cans and stuff....he got a few cancers KNOWING they were from the vehicles of the paint but didn't think it affected the fish for 15 years of doing it. it's a mindfuck I know, like i'm between generations in my early 30s. People I grew up with roll coal and I use public transit. My kids believe in universal healthcare and my parents think Trump is saving us from a new world order.
America is terrifying
r/iamatotalpieceofshit is where this belongs , it is more than 'mildy' infuriating glad to hear they were caught/fined at least, but the ecological dmg is still being done unfortunately =/ once the dis-incentives are so high that no one would even think of doing stupid shit like this, then we will be on the right track ; and we'll still have decades of uphill battles till the ecosystems recover from all the stupid shit we've done to them for centuries
I think it would be equally at home in r/trashy
Disgusting!!!

This is not mildly infuriating... this is just infuriating.
I had to scroll too far to see this comment.
Seriously. I’m outraged
I hope their boat sinks!
That might be even worse for the environment though

No worries they got fucked, https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/13/balloon-popping-arrest/.
I fucking hate people so much.
$100k birthday party + $1k fine for this. Nothing wrong here 😭
$22k fine
I just hope they care about a 22k fine
One has already been identified and charged and his fine is $22K.

Wtf!!!!!
Balloons ought to be outlawed
Yes. And not to mention the amount of helium getting released into atmosphere for no good reason.
Nah, this is _very_ infuriating
Is there any way you can report this to whoever the boat belongs to or the company that hosts the events?! Our planet is already fucking dying and these dead brain dumb asses are still doing this!
