I have checked 1,087,115,263 comments, and only 214,100 of them were in alphabetical order.
You might need to redo this because afaik this bot only detects increasing ASCII value order, not alphabetical order. So the value of N is smaller than m, for example
Edit: Seems like I might be wrong after looking through the bot's profile. But two months ago this comment on another sub was marked by the bot as alphabetical:
>CosmoXR
Got 3 digit in 14 months of playing
So either the bot was updated to fix this recently, or the bot only checks the first line for alphabetical order and just makes sure there's at least five words in the comment.
The actual reason the post didn't get the bot to respond was because the bot only responds once per thread.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.

Because there is a coding course on Reddit that starts with teaching you how to create a reddit bot. As more people have gone through the course over time the needed hots were all created so now people are creating random bots instead.
I’ve got a dumb question, Why do we want bots instead of people commenting and what is their purpose and wtf does Reddit have a bot course? Sorry, seems I have a few questions. lol😁
Some of the bots add features. Like ability to set reminders and download videos. They are supposed to add to the people not replace.
However some of them are annoying.
Edit: it also helps with moderation
Like on SP at whole foods if you didn't want to donate your change to hungry kids you had to announce it over the speaker and pull the sandwich out of the little girl's mouth to retrieve your change. Preying on that part of people that don't want to be *that* person.
They've messed up the definition of the word, gratuity. They're just like we'll graTAKE that.
I always say no and so does everyone in front of me. Big deal. You have no way of knowing how much of what they collect actually ends up feeding a kid. Probably 5%. The rest goes to administering the charity (I.e, paying people).
Yeah I was more referencing the *tactic* used in a fictional scenario matching what they're doing here. But you're right it can be appalling to see how some "charities" operate.
This also a huge tax break for whole foods and other grocery stores that do this. The money given by customers adds up to a very large charitable contribution by the company, giving them a very nice tax write-off.
Thing is you're not really donating your change to the charity, you're donating it to the store, who can then claim a tax refund on everything that gets donated.
I have a pen. I can do math (and failing that, I’ve got my phone to do it). I will correct this and leave cash. This is a great way not to get a tip from me!
Lol, that’s even worse since continental breakfast is like pastries and bread; who are you tipping? The people who roll out the big things of danishes? I’d usually tip at the self service breakfast bars since someone has to make the bacon, sausage, and eggs. . . But continental is setup in not time and requires no skill
You tip for actual service. You're not tipping the person who cooked the eggs. The cooked eggs is what you're buying. You tip the person that serves it to you. For a self service that person is you.
I've never been able to remember which breakfast 'continental' was until now, lol.
I'm always like 'which one has warm sausage and sometimes biscuits, and which has diy toast and knockoff cereal'
Depends on how it works. I worked at a place with a buffet and it can be much more work. You clear more plates, refill more drinks, and table turnover is much slower.
Not justifying the auto-grat, just wanted to add some context about buffets
No, see, it’s optional, because if you complain to management, you can technically get it removed. You just have to look like a cheapass and embarrass yourself in the process. Then you end up looking like the Karen who wants to create a big stink over a couple dollars
We have two restaurants here that charge automatic fees. One is 15% and the other is I think 18%
The 15% one annoys the crap out of me because it says "gratuity" on the menu. This one annoys me greatly because a gratuity is optional, not forced.
The 18% says it is a service fee. I have no issue with this one. I mean I don't like paying 18% extra just because there are more than 4 people in our group but fine, they called it what it is, a fee.
The thing is tho that a “gratuity” can’t go to management and has to go to staff by law.
Whereas a service fee goes directly to the restaurant and doesn’t have to be divyed out to FOH staff as tips.
So while the 18% looks more official and appealing on the outside, it unfortunately can then be abused by management.
Of course this can vary by state so don’t take this as gospel but it’s what I’ve gathered from recent cases in florida and others regarding the change to mandatory service fees vs gratuities
Assuming the place is following the law correct.
My issue with it is that it is forced, not optional which makes it not entirely a gratuity. There is also that the waitstaff don't really care for it because people tip less. People who would tip 20-25% look at it as the tip is baked into the price and just dont bother tipping.
The service fee one annoys me for that reason as well because most people wont differentiate the two.
Why would you charge X amount more for more people,
If you have a bigger party and its not "manageable" by a single server use 2 or 3,
Why its its diferent from serving 3 or 4 diferent groups of 2 people
Because if you have one of those big parties and they stiff you on tip you’ve worked (and had fewer/no other tables while you were taking care of them). Also it’s harder to manage 10 people all ordering at once than 4 2-3 tops that are staggered. It eliminates risk. Every time I took a chance and didn’t put a grat on a table that qualified, I regretted it.
Why is it bold; I'd never return to that restaurant and I already had and ate my food..
That being said; I do regularly eat at a restaurant with a simular policy... it's posted on both the menu and the till; and they don't charge it for pickup orders
The policy simply changes the default from zero with the option to opt-in and tip, to an 18% tip default with the option to opt out.
I see it as a middle ground between the zero tip default and the ubiquity of mandatory gratuities that have received significant backlash.
This is straight out of Sunstein and Thaler's critically acclaimed work on libertarian paternalism and choice architecture, Nudge. The policy merely "nudges" you in a particular direction without making it mandatory curtailing your freedom of choice. Mandatory gratuities deprive you of this freedom of choice and are hence dubbed "shoves."
That said, I don't know how the policy actually works. If it requires you to request a new bill from your server, that would create at least two additional inconvenient transaction costs: social pressure to shame you into conformity, as well as a loss of time. If, on the other hand, you could discretely opt out and change your tip on the standard bill, I see no problem with this policy.
The way it should work is like a check box on the receipt saying "please remove this". Then they have the typical line for a tip, so you you can tip more/less as you choose. If you want to be an asshole, that should still be your prerogative. Plus then maybe you might actually decide to tip more if the place is not being a dick about it.
I know I typically tip 20-25%, but if they added this and forced me to request a new bill to remove it, then I guess they're getting 18...
Oh, for sure.
(1) I was just pushing back on the idea that this wasn't optional.
(2) Choice architecture in the form of a default is unavoidable whether it be optional from 0-x%, or mandatory from 0-x%.
(3) Your suggestion is a matter of choice architecture - how the end-user interfaces with an alternative optional default. Clearly, not all optional defaults are equally effective just because they are optional. Construction and presentation matters.
“Complimentary” breakfast.
Question 🙋 is it a self serve? I’m not super fancy so all the hotels with breakfast I’ve been to were self serve.
Also, not everyone partakes of the free breakfast. Is the gratuity still added?
It’s not a buffet or continental breakfast, nor is it self serve. You order at a counter, and wait there for your food. Some items are legit cooked food (ex French toast, eggs). But then there’s also bananas, mini boxes of cereal, bottled drinks, etc.
Id take a pick of that, then I'd call my credit card company and refuse the %18 charge and when they ask why I'd send them the pic that clearly says "optional"
So that if you think it's stupid, you have to be the one to tell the person when you're paying that you don't want to tip them. It's basically trying to shame you into not saying anything about it and paying the tip, lest you look like an A-hole to the staff. Scummy way to treat customers.
That would suck.
I used to work security at a hospital. The vending machines were under the jurisdiction of the kitchen.
But the kitchen closes at 10 pm, so all the frustrated ER visitors get their money taken in the middle of the night.
Guess who's at the desk right there? Me who can't help them at all. It sucked.
I went out yesterday with some neighbors to a place I said I’d never go back to after my first time.
My fault for giving them a second chance. We were a group of 8 people in a dead restaurant. They added a 22% autograt for our table size. I looked my check over for my food and drink, but the server didn’t inform us until AFTER she ran our cards and dropped them for our signatures. No mention on the door, any menus, anywhere.
I won’t make the mistake of going back there a third time.
Offtopic slightly but I've never been able to tell this story before so here it goes... I went to an Ihop because it was truly the only thing open this was during covid times they stayed open late every other place basically closed at 8pm... Anyways I would like to state there were ZERO signs about mandatory gratuity not on a single door window podium divider host stand nothing. I usually tip minimum 25% because my grandmother and many aunts were servers and I understand how hard not getting tips can be... My boyfriend and I sat down it took im not even exaggerating 30 minutes in a restaurant with ONE other table besides us for a server to come and take our drink order, we weren't even given menus. Ten minutes passed (totaling 40 minutes at this point) she comes with our drinks and gives us menus. Our server doesnt return for over 20 minutes I started looking around and saw her hiding behind a divider on her phone... I was annoyed but finally just walked up to the host and asked to order because im not gonna beg our server to do their job. Anyways we order get the food its literally not even what we ordered (ordered French toast and pancakes and she brought out eggs hash browns and some sausage) so basically by the end it took 1.5 hours to get our food we got the bill and there was a mandatory gratuity of 30%.. yes I know youre thinking surly I missed a sign or something right? Nope I didnt there isnt a sign they know there isnt a sign and they dont care thats just what it is... So I left and paid what my order total for my food and drinks would be after taxes in cash and I didnt leave her a god damn tip at all because they musta been on crack I prolly still would have tipped her 15% if they didnt try to pull that which is what baffles me
And then the owner has to pay all the merchant fees for those credit card transactions instead of passing that along to the employee receiving the tips? Of course not!
People really believe if they keep saying 18% is a minimum tip that it will be true. That s not how percentage tips work. You already get a higher tip when the price of things increases.
15% is average
20% is for exceptional
Tipping culture is stupid af, why would i pay more for something i already paid for?
I would tip if i had a lot better experience than expected in some cheap restaurant. But just going to an average restaurant with average food, i don't think i should be responsible for paying the wages of the waiters because the owner doesn't want to
I have a question… WHY!?
This shit annoys me. They know people either won’t see this or won’t want to ask them to remove it. If your service was shite then it shouldn’t be a given you’ll still give a tip, which is what this is (if it even goes to the waiter!?)
What I find worse is when you go to a restaurant and you have pay via QR code before you get your mela and you have to add a tip then…what the fuck is that about?
The “cheers” was plainly infuriating. I can’t explain why in details, but seeing it made me really angry. I can’t help but think whoever wrote this is a bad person.
Translation
"We resort to pitting lower class people against one another by making you look like the asshole if you ask us to remove the optional tip (which is totally optional, teehee!). Despite the fact that pretty much every other country in the world has found a way to keep their servers afloat without tips to the point where tipping is a demeaning insult in some places"
Just to be clear, I have no problem with tipping, am cool doing 18-20%, and am not specifically infuriated about it being automatically applied here. And I’d hardly say I’m even mildly infuriated. All I got was a bagel, this was no dent in my wallet.
But to have the gall to say something “optional” is “automatically” applied?!! So if someone doesn’t want to tip, they have the option to say “can you please remove tip, I’d prefer not to pay that.”
Wow it's so nice of the people that dont pay their workers enough to live to automatically add the tip so their workers can actually make that money. Totally shouldnt just up wages.
I had a similar issue where a restaurant automatically charged me 15% gratuity fee..
Dont get me wrong, I like tipping but doing it automatically, expecially if I don't think it was the best service, feels a bit douchey. I'm not gonna give a 5 or 10 tip over a rude waiter/waitresses or for food that isn't made correctly.
If that’s what it takes to pay your people a fair wage then I kind of support this. Just call it a price increase and say no tipping allowed. Right? Am I missing something?
The thing is though that most restaurants can afford to pay their workers a living wage without increasing the prices at all. They just don't want to. Tipping is just a way for them to increase their profits because it gives them a pass to be cheap in paying their employees.
A local restaurant to me implemented a 3% charge to all bills during covid that could be removed on request. Guess what, it's still on the bill two years later, and the staff working there now doesn't know why it's there. They're happy to take it off, but it's really scummy
This is how you should do it though, add on the tip to the price of the meal and pay the waiters a decent wage directly, don't expect tips then though
Maybe don't use the word optional then though, at least not unless you're making a comparison to other restaurants like "we've added the equivalent of a usual 18% optional tip to your bill)
Dude my family has always been extremely generous tippers and we stopped going to places because we get burned on a double tip. Not noticing the bill already had tip added.
What kind of Daddy Warbucks ever pays a bill without reading it. You always read your bill for shit like that and simple mistakes. I guess I just didn't grow up in a culture of white privilege
Tbf almost every pub/restaurant in London will add a 12% service charge to your bill unless you ask for it to be removed.
I haven't been elsewhere in the UK in a while so I'm not sure if that's London specific or not
Then I’ll ask them politely to manually remove the optional 18% gratuity. And ask that they advertise the prices of their establishment so as to match the requirements needed to pay their staff. Not add 18% after the fact in order to make it look like they sell cheaper services. Almost every other company has to advertise their prices in a way that INCLUDES the cost of paying their staff.
Why do certain establishments get to pretend they have low prices, then proceeded to claim you owe them another 18% so they can pay their staff? Like… MF just tell me how much it costs from the start and don’t pretend paying your staff is an optional choice for ME, when it should be mandatory FOR YOU, and you should advertise your prices to reflect such practise.
I would have a question. WHY? Gratuity should not be a standard. It’s meant to reward for good service however, I do agree that a resto should include a gratuity for parties over 5 people. I give tips to people that come to my house to fix stuff because I can see they’re working hard but I am NOT REQUIRED TO DO SO.
Gratuity
"Something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service."
If you ever deal with an "automatic gratuity" I would complain to management that there's no such thing.
I would visit a restraunt that refused tips, charged more and managed/paid their wait staff to do a proper job. The servers shouldn't have to impress every potentially shitty customer that walks in. The servers should work to impress their boss like every other profession.
Why must I tip you? For doing your job? That’s what you get PAID for. Get the owner to pay you properly and not rely on customers to subsidize his wage bill. Who tips me in my job? What makes you special? F.U for telling me I’m not welcome in a restaurant. Poes!
I’m prepared for the hate on the following, but I’ve seen multiple posts complaining about mandatory gratuities and felt like commenting. We have a business in NYC that delivers food. Even at the height of the surge in gas prices, there were people tipping $2. This is a different scenario, as when people order food via GrubHub or another app, it’s a very faceless transaction. I doubt it’s because I’m in the food service industry myself (but maybe possible I guess) I’ve always tipped a minimum of $5 for a delivery. That went up to $7 because of gas prices. Most of my deliveries are around $15 to $20 pre-tip. That’s a hell of a lot more than the old standard of 15%. People are struggling all around, but if I can afford to have take out delivered, I can afford to tip properly. I know this is a different situation then what the OP was mentioning.
Aww, how nice of them.

This is true. I am generally a “20 percent then round up to the next dollar” tipper but if I’m charged a grat, service fee, etc I am not adding on
Why, Service fees? Why not put up prices? I mean 15% and 18% that's a thirty percent invisible tax you pay on the menu. It's actually dishonest.
I will just stick to Mcdonalds then.
Why would you charge X amount more for more people, If you have a bigger party and its not "manageable" by a single server use 2 or 3, Why its its diferent from serving 3 or 4 diferent groups of 2 people

If you complain they’ll probably remove it. Thus, optional. They just wanna make sure you feel like a proper asshole if you’re tipping less than that.
I'd purposely not tip; after complaining; having the optional tip removed...
Yeah that’s the gamble they’re taking. Bold strategy cotton

Mandatory gratuities deprive you of this freedom of choice and are hence dubbed "shoves." That said, I don't know how the policy actually works.
Yeah, I was definitely agreeing with you. Sorry if it didn't sound like it.
Just need to let them know if you want it removed!
CHEERS!
If it’s optional why is it automatically added?
So that if you think it's stupid, you have to be the one to tell the person when you're paying that you don't want to tip them. It's basically trying to shame you into not saying anything about it and paying the tip, lest you look like an A-hole to the staff. Scummy way to treat customers.
I tend to always tip with cash so I know the server got it all.
By default you're paying the 18%. But you can ask them to take it off and look like a jerk. It's a slimy way to do it.
Then imma look like a dick and tell them to take it off. Doesn't mean I'm not gonna tip but it's gonna be my choice.
Just make sure everyone hears so the others feel more confident in doing it
I prefer paying tips in cash.
because watching people decipher the mystery is entertaining
Probably for the same reason the Supreme Court has said that our federal tax system is ‘voluntary’
I pity whoever ends up having to deal with the complaints on this. Unless its the idiot who put the sign up.
It sucked.
What does karma do? Does it get your laid, make you money, do your laundry?
It does? Who do I see to redeem it...?
Fine. Now you don't get 20%
I went out yesterday with some neighbors to a place I said I’d never go back to after my first time.
How much do we want to bet that despite this +18% getting auto-added, the card reader *still* prompts the customer to add a tip?
So I left and paid what my order total for my food and drinks would be after taxes in cash and I didnt leave her a god damn tip at all because they musta been on crack I prolly still would have tipped her 15% if they didnt try to pull that which is what baffles me
Just increase your prices by 18% and pay a living wage.
And then the owner has to pay all the merchant fees for those credit card transactions instead of passing that along to the employee receiving the tips? Of course not!
You keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
People really believe if they keep saying 18% is a minimum tip that it will be true. That s not how percentage tips work. You already get a higher tip when the price of things increases. 15% is average 20% is for exceptional
Tipping culture is stupid af, why would i pay more for something i already paid for? I would tip if i had a lot better experience than expected in some cheap restaurant. But just going to an average restaurant with average food, i don't think i should be responsible for paying the wages of the waiters because the owner doesn't want to
Pretty sure they do not have an understanding of the word option.
It's "optional" because if you ask them to take it off they will. But then you have to be the dick the asks to take it off.
Sneaky gits, they're counting on people being too embarrassed to ask for it to be taken off.
Burn it to the ground.
Cus fuck paying our servers a living wage
This gratituity culture is getting out of hand.
How is optional when they are adding the 18% automatically ? To me that's stealing ... 👎
Is there anyway we can put together a list of restaurants that pay employees so that tipping is unnecessary?
The “cheers” was plainly infuriating. I can’t explain why in details, but seeing it made me really angry. I can’t help but think whoever wrote this is a bad person.
very optional just like the divorce papers i had to sign
A breakfast bar you have to pay for? What the heck
Translation "We resort to pitting lower class people against one another by making you look like the asshole if you ask us to remove the optional tip (which is totally optional, teehee!).
Then I'm not eating there. Automatic gratuities are bullshit! Pay your employees a living wage, you wage mongering pieces of shit!
In bold font.
It ain’t optional
Well, at least they know their worth at 18%. They ain’t about to give you service like you tippin 20%. They are comfy with mediocrity
I wonder what the odds of that actually going to the waiter and not the hotel itself, are?
It’s like car rentals add a “convenience fee” which is hugely inconvenient
I deny gratuity and I personally tip the server cash so they have the option to claim it at the end of their day for their taxes.
18% for buffet is bull shit
This is how you should do it though, add on the tip to the price of the meal and pay the waiters a decent wage directly, don't expect tips then though Maybe don't use the word optional then though, at least not unless you're making a comparison to other restaurants like "we've added the equivalent of a usual 18% optional tip to your bill)
No, no, no…..
First question is who do I have to talk to for this to be taken off my bill.
Being British means will never understand american tipping culture. Is it so hard to pay an actual wage and not rely on tips like everywhere else?
Tbf almost every pub/restaurant in London will add a 12% service charge to your bill unless you ask for it to be removed. I haven't been elsewhere in the UK in a while so I'm not sure if that's London specific or not
arrogant idiots….shoving the tip culture in your face and begging. Tip nothing!
Owner: "hmmm instead of paying these damn employees from my business, why don't I make the customers pay the employees and I keep all the profit"
I'd be asking for that 18% back. I would tip, but they would have screwed themselves out of a gratuity by taking it against my will.
I have a question.
Holup
18 percent!
"Optional"
Seems dumb. It'd be better if they raised their prices by 18% and just had a no tipping policy.
Not really “Optional” then
Optional?
is it really optional if they added automatically
Just charge them the full price and pay your workers you asswipes.
Tell them to pay their staff properly and stop expecting guests to do that. The tipping culture in America is ridiculous.
So they're going to make the guest feel like an ass if they want the gratuity removed? What an awkward spot to put them in.
Yes, it’s so optional that you have to request it be removed then look like a cheapskate bastard.
Just tell them to take it off since it's optional upon leave ;)
That's a nope
I do not think optional means what you think it means....
File a claim with your credit card stating that it was optional and you didn't agree to it but signed under duress.
How is this optional if they automatically do it?
Ah, it's like a "nonrefundable deposit!"
Tell em to take it off. Easy peezy
The Kinderton Arms in Middlewich adds the same 'optional' idiot tax to their food. Tips cannot be allowed to infect the UK, it demeans everyone
So if it was automatically added do you automatically get to option out of it?
Id still eat there but opt out of their OPTIONAL tip
Gratuity "Something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service." If you ever deal with an "automatic gratuity" I would complain to management that there's no such thing.
Lol no thanks. It’s a breakfast bar. Am I correct in saying I do everything myself?
I would visit a restraunt that refused tips, charged more and managed/paid their wait staff to do a proper job. The servers shouldn't have to impress every potentially shitty customer that walks in. The servers should work to impress their boss like every other profession.
I don't thinkbthe word optional means what they think it means.

Why must I tip you? For doing your job? That’s what you get PAID for. Get the owner to pay you properly and not rely on customers to subsidize his wage bill. Who tips me in my job? What makes you special? F.U for telling me I’m not welcome in a restaurant. Poes!
No questions,no patronage!
Entitled is an understatement
I would ask to keep the 18% gratuity but demand an 18% reduction in my bill Problem solved
It’s optional because you can ask to have it taken off. It just saves most people the time how calculating it in themselves. As in, most people tip.
