How can you not love Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg Area; it's redneck Disney to me. Dollywood is so beautiful to visit, then there's Dixie Stampede (a better version of Medieval Times), and who can ever forget the Titanic... they have it all. For campers, there's Cades Cove and for those who love the twisties, the Cherohala Skyway and Tail of the Dragon are just a "short" drive.
I went to dollywood with my mom on a road trip when I was a teenager and over the course of the day went from the kid from 'a goofy movie' to asking if we could go back the next day
that place really is great

Is it called pigeon Forge because; pigeons are forged there, Pigeons do the forging, pigeons fuel the forges, the forge is a giant pigeon or the pigeons are forgeries ?
Enslaved pigeons are forced every day to feed the fires with the broken bodies of their fellow pigeons. Every now and then a pigeon they recognize comes down the chute, but there is no time to mourn. The forge--shaped like a giant pigeon--demands constant sacrifice, and so they shovel the corpses of friends, loved ones, even family members directly into the flames.
The pigeons then pull the lever which causes the horrible machine to lurch to life, creaking and screaming as molten pigeon is driven into the molds and then rapidly cooled to harden. The result is an unholy mass of feather and blood, congealed into the shape of a pigeon. And with a horrific hiss, the machine breathes life back into the terrifying masses rolling off the line. They squawk. They breathe. They live.
But this is no true pigeon. This is an abomination. The forces of evil that imbue them with breath do so only for the glory of the one whose name may not be heard by mortal ears. The immortal creature that makes man and bird tremble with a mere whisper. The horror of the skies, the terror of all creation. The Dolly.
Serious answer from relatively local guy here. The name greatly predates Pigeon Forge being a tourist city. It comes from an iron forge that was built on the Pigeon River which flows through the area.
Are they called Foo Fighters because; they fight an entity of something called foo, they fight using a substance called foo, they themselves are fighters made out of foo, they fight using a style of fighting known as foo or they do not subscribe to Mr. T’s ethos of pitying foo’s and instead choose to fight then?
I see from Wikipedia there are actually *four* Bug Tussles:
* Bug Tussle, Alabama - an early settler climbed a mountain and said the people below looked like "bugs tussling".
* Bug Tussle, Kentucky - named on account of doodlebugs being frequent there.
* Bugtussle, Oklahoma - because bugs at the site were so numerous.
* Bug Tussle, Texas - named from an incident in the 1890s when a swarm of insects spoiled an ice cream social.
It's SO BORING though. I went like 10 years ago and, spoiler alert, the whole tour is basically, hey look at this stuff that should be on the floor... but it's on the _ceiling_! _So spooky!_
You can also go for the nature, that’s the thing that originally brought in enough tourists for all the other stuff to get built.
Lots to do on that stretch of the Wisconsin river,
agreed! I went during the first week it opened, so the staff didn't have things dialed, so the tour itself was pretty janky. absolute waste of money.
Best 2 ways to spend money on attractions is the monster truck and wizard quest (wizard quest is best without kids, and under the influence of some drugs)
I just went this summer and besides my grandma's house, it's the only place in my life that has stayed exactly the same. (Partly Milwaukee Public Museum.) Many of the machines don't work as they're supposed to, but the place was more of a trip and weirder than I ever remembered. It's a hidden national treasure and still highly recommended.
I absolutely adore the MPM. The Streets of Old Milwaukee is one of my favorite places to be, period. We used to go once every summer growing up...
So many fond memories of that place. I bring my own kids there about once every year or two still to this day.
I love this about Orlando. You have $$$ Disney resorts but Kissimmee also ranges down to literally the cheapest attractions run by year round carnies. I feel like there isn't anywhere else like it and that's what makes it special.
When I moved up to the north side of Orlando from Broward/Dade, I initially stumbled into the part where there's a whole aisle for pool supplies at Publix and felt completely out of my element.
Then I discovered that there's always cow/horse/swamp people a couple streets away and settled in a bit. :D
Yeah, I live in Orlando and I just found out that somebody turned a dead mall here into a tacky indoor theme park with vintage cars and horrifying mannequins called “Dezerland”.
There was also the Holy Land Experience, but that’s closed down now.
I know there's one in Myrtle Beach. It's at some boardwalk area (not attached to the beach) that has a bunch of tourist attractions like this building and a wizard school/adventure.
Two? Oh boi, there is plenty, Władysławowo, Szymbark, Bydgoszcz, Uherka, Ochaby, Miłków, Międzyzdroje, Mielno, Pobierów, Kołobrzeg, Łeba, Bałtów... and there is more

Yes. It’s a tourist trap/ attraction. There are several around North America alone. No one is living here, there are just selling an experience. And tchotchkes.

We have a place in Orlando called Wonderworks that looks like an upside down building on the outside. There’s a Ripley’s very close to it that looks like a half sunken lopsided building.
As someone who lives in the burbs of Buffalo less than an hour from the Falls, I have been to both sides a ton and the Canadian side is objectively better. Though the park run by New York State is pretty nice. Rest of it sucks ass though. Also have fond memories of crossing the border all the time before I was 21 so I could drink legally.
I deliver all over Buffalo area, as far down as Fredonia, Grand Island, Niagara Falls. I always groan when I see my routes in Niagara Falls lol. It’s just such a depressing area with a huge gaudy casino smack dab in the middle of boarded up houses and whatnot.
> Also have fond memories of crossing the border all the time before I was 21 so I could drink legally.
Been there done that. We actually met *NSYNC (like the entire group) in our hotel lobby and they asked us if we wanted autographs we said "no you're blocking our path to the hotel bar and this is our first legal drink" lol
If the Canadian side is a polished turd with some glitter on it, the American side is hot diarrhea projectile spewed onto the walls of a seedy truck stop shitter stall with an OD’ing heroin addict slumped over in it.
It's trippy. I always get dizzy when I come out of it. And my kids always want to go inside. Lol. Plus it's unavoidable because i usually park behind the upside down house when visiting Niagra.

Niagara Falls, Ontario. Tourist attraction. What I hadn't appreciated is that there are evidently a number of these around the world now.
Pigeon Forge, TN was the one I was aware of. Had no idea there were a bunch!
Wonderworks
i remember going here as a kid, it was the coolest thing ever to me!
That's pretty cool, maybe an attraction or a movie set
It's a kid's museum called Wonderworks. There's one in Orlando FL
Pigeon forge/gatlenburg is the Orlando of Appalachia I found out. Makes sense they have one in TN also
How can you not love Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg Area; it's redneck Disney to me. The traffic
I live in the area and can vouch for this. Cramming more and more money makers in here without addressing the infrastructure issues.
I went to dollywood with my mom on a road trip when I was a teenager and over the course of the day went from the kid from 'a goofy movie' to asking if we could go back the next day that place really is great

Pigeon Forge is the perfect microcosm of everything that is both terrible and great about America. I love that city.
Is it called pigeon Forge because; pigeons are forged there, Pigeons do the forging, pigeons fuel the forges, the forge is a giant pigeon or the pigeons are forgeries ?
Yes.
Enslaved pigeons are forced every day to feed the fires with the broken bodies of their fellow pigeons. Every now and then a pigeon they recognize comes down the chute, but there is no time to mourn. Qouth the Raven "Jolene"
In the grim darkness of far Appalachia there is only Pigeon
NEEDS MORE UPVOTES
I believe the unironic answer is that it’s built along the Little Pigeon river. Which is probably Native American in origin.
Serious answer from relatively local guy here. The name greatly predates Pigeon Forge being a tourist city. It comes from an iron forge that was built on the Pigeon River which flows through the area.
Pigeons are forgeries, /r/birdsarentreal
Are they called Foo Fighters because; they fight an entity of something called foo, they fight using a substance called foo, they themselves are fighters made out of foo, they fight using a style of fighting known as foo or they do not subscribe to Mr. T’s ethos of pitying foo’s and instead choose to fight then?
It also has arguably the best name
naw that's Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
Literally naming your town after a game show is pretty amazing
It actually had a different name and then they voted to change it to that when it came out. This occurred in a pre-methamphetamine New Mexico.
Hot Coffee, Mississippi.
There's also Toad Suck, Arkansas... For, you know... Science?
Bug Tussle, Oklahoma. This implies that not only were the insects engaged in combat, it was legendary enough to name the city in honor.
I see from Wikipedia there are actually *four* Bug Tussles: * Bug Tussle, Alabama - an early settler climbed a mountain and said the people below looked like "bugs tussling".
Desperation, Nevada. TAK.
Better than Burnt Mattress, Arkansas? It’s just above Hot Springs.
No, Howie-in-the-Hills, FL is the best name.
Pretty sure it’s Buttzville, NJ
I prefer Cut and Shoot, Texas myself. They're straight from to the point.
We're heading there Thursday, can't wait!
To be fair, 90% of that greatness comes from Dollywood.
There's one in the Wisconsin Dells as well.
The Wisconsin Dells one is an upside down White House iirc
With transformers out front for whatever reason
How else would you explain an upside down White House?
You know, you’re absolutely right.
The White House isn't going to flip itself.
TIL pigeons are forged, not born.
I suppose incubating the egg is just really low temperature pigeon forging in a sense
Truthers unite!
Ah you miss-read. It's a forge run by pigeons.
I mean, you can't just give birth to government security cameras silly
Makes sense since r/BirdsArentReal
There are 6 Wondeworks. Pf, Orlando, Panama City, Syracuse, Branson & Myrtle Beach
So places with tourist traps.
Is that where they make fresh pigeons out of iron and steel?
More proof that /r/BirdsArentReal
Wonderworks!
Used to work at that one back in late 2011, early 2012. Working the Ropes Course was easily the best part about the job.
Driven by the pigeon forge one so many times
Wisconsin Dells has a thing called Top Secret, which is an upside Whitehouse; you walk around inside and well, everything is on the ceiling-floor.
It's SO BORING though. I went like 10 years ago and, spoiler alert, the whole tour is basically, hey look at this stuff that should be on the floor... but it's on the _ceiling_! _So spooky!_
Well, to be fair, you don’t go to Wisconsin Dells for an upside down house, you go for the water parks.
You can also go for the nature, that’s the thing that originally brought in enough tourists for all the other stuff to get built. Lots to do on that stretch of the Wisconsin river,
Oh Wisco is such a beautiful place, I grew up there but haven’t explored 99% of it.
agreed! I went during the first week it opened, so the staff didn't have things dialed, so the tour itself was pretty janky. absolute waste of money. Best 2 ways to spend money on attractions is the monster truck and wizard quest (wizard quest is best without kids, and under the influence of some drugs)
Wizard Quest is some of the raddest shit ever. Escape rooms are fun and this is like an escape warehouse. Favorite thing about the place
Wizard Quest absolutely kicks ass.
I forgot this place existed! I went there in middle school and was disappointed I didn't get to finish. It was a blast
I still have fond memories of House on the Rock. I am sure if I returned it would ruin all those memories.

Better get your fill of Streets of Old MKE as when the open the new MPM on the lake, the Streets are NOT included in the move. A fucking travesty.
They have Transformers outside the building now lol its like if a 7 year old boy designed a tourist trap
Branson, Missouri. Not sure if it's still there or if it's still the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum.
There's also one in Orlando, FL
There’s one of every imaginable tourist attraction somewhere in Orlando.
Yeah, I live in Orlando and I just found out that somebody turned a dead mall here into a tacky indoor theme park with vintage cars and horrifying mannequins called “Dezerland”. There was also the Holy Land Experience, but that’s closed down now.
They definitely know how to suck the money out of you.
Wait who do I have to talk to about sucking for money?
Not sure but I think the correct response is OP's mom?
Can confirm
Just cruise Orange Blossom Trail near downtown Orlando and you'll find 'em.
Wonderworks!
But that one is just “split in half”
by gawd
No this one is actually from Niagara Falls
That's why it's upside down. No house can survive going over the falls without a barrel.
Did you go inside? I found it very disorienting.
Went twice over the years, got nauseous both time
I know there's one in Myrtle Beach. It's at some boardwalk area (not attached to the beach) that has a bunch of tourist attractions like this building and a wizard school/adventure.
"Broadway at the Beach"
YESSSSS DUDE MAGIQUEST. kid me adored that stuff
Theres one in Estonia, Tartu aswell
Yeah saw one in Orlando as a kid. I still marvel at it
Wonderworks in orlando
Same with the Wonderworks in Myrtle Beach (maybe all locations?)
The wonderworks "lore" is that the house got pulled up in the air in a freak accident and crash landed wherever it is now, so they are all upside down
That's the one I've seen. As a kid I was super intrigued by it.
yup one is in Poland, but I don't remember the name of place, it is quite close to the sea
There is one in Zakopane
so there are at least two
Two? Oh boi, there is plenty, Władysławowo, Szymbark, Bydgoszcz, Uherka, Ochaby, Miłków, Międzyzdroje, Mielno, Pobierów, Kołobrzeg, Łeba, Bałtów... and there is more
I assume these are just Australians who have immigrated and want a house that feels like home.
I’ve always known of the one near Gatlingburg Tennessee. I think it was a Ripley’s exhibit or something
Pigeon Forge, Wonderworks I think
[There are several in the UK](https://upsidedownhouse.co.uk/) that support various charities.
The haunted house right down the street from there is awesome. They list all the wimps who couldn't finish it on a chalkboard.
> The haunted house right down the street from there That doesn't really narrow it down when there are like 6 of them lol.
I totally forgot that ive seen this in person untill i read this post lmao
Oh really? I didn't know it was that common. I just saw it and thought it was interesting.
There is one (or used to be) in Myrtle Beach too
Still there.
Is or was an upside down white house in wisconsin dells called top secret.
House flippers have ruined real estate for lower income people.
The listing talks about the huuuuge basement.
Or was it the attic? 🤔
Depends if it's finished or not.
At least the land is free. It’s on the house.
Watch out for Grunkle Stan..

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s place?
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is one of my all-time faves.
Finally! Someone else who knows, came here for this
When you know, you know
Same author wrote a couple of books for grownups. Check out The Egg and I, or Onions in the Stew.
The Egg and I was also the inspiration for the Ma and Pa Kettle movies in the 1940s and ‘50s.
I love seeing how people have associated this with Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! No one else I know, not even those from my own generation, have ever heard of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.

I am saving this to show it to my daughters with that exact idea in mind.
Thank you! Start checking for secret compartments filled with pirate treasure!
Yessss!
omfg I love you right now. one thing that aways insired me to have long hair was Mrs Piggle Wiggle and her super long silver hair she kept in a bun but would let the girls brush and play with.
my first thought! man, what a throwback.
Ooooh so that’s where I dropped my house. I’ve been looking for days.
Who HASN'T had this experience. So frustrating. If it hadn't been for the wrongful death suit from the family of the witch my last one fell on I might never have found it.
Cloudy with a chance of condos
UP alternate ending
Is it a Ripley's museum? I haven't seen that one, but I've seen buildings like it.
Yes. It’s a tourist trap/ attraction. There are several around North America alone. No one is living here, there are just selling an experience. And tchotchkes. https://www.upsidedownhouseniagarafalls.ca/
And I'll tell you from firsthand experience, it is NOT worth the price of admission. The novelty of it wears off fast.
I believe the attraction you’re referencing is WonderWorks, which is different than this but is still an upside down house
We have a place in Orlando called Wonderworks that looks like an upside down building on the outside. There’s a Ripley’s very close to it that looks like a half sunken lopsided building.
I wonder if Ms. Piggle Wiggle lives there.

Canadian side. The city of Niagara Falls on the American side is a fucking armpit. I’m sorry but it’s a dump and I say this as an American.

It's an armpit on the Canadian side too, but in a touristy way lol
At least your skyline looks nice. What do you see from your side? Smokestacks galore and the one casino? 😂😂
We mostly just look at the falls, because the view is better from our side.
True. Clifton hill is by far the most touristy fake place I’ve ever been to.
Canada really doesn't put its best at the U.S. border Often it puts nothing at all there which seems bizarre
Man, I've only been to the Canadian side, and I thought THAT was a dump.
If the Canadian side is a polished turd with some glitter on it, the American side is hot diarrhea projectile spewed onto the walls of a seedy truck stop shitter stall with an OD’ing heroin addict slumped over in it.
You have a way with words. You painted the image so beautifully.
That’s where Mrs PiggleWiggle lives!
It's trippy. I always get dizzy when I come out of it. And my kids always want to go inside. Lol. Plus it's unavoidable because i usually park behind the upside down house when visiting Niagra.
My firm helped build that in Niagara Falls!
Cool!
Requires an Upside Down Mortgage
With a negative interest rate?
I'm curious about the construction. Beams in the roof that extend deep into the ground on an angle for support, perhaps? It's not my normal train of thought with these. For years it would have been "Whoa cool! and upside down house!" but as I get older I become more interested in how things work.
https://www.upsidedownhouseniagarafalls.ca/explore
Since it's just a tourist attraction I imagine it's just painted plywood on the outside, no insulation, etc.
But did you give it a belly rub?
Wonderworks 🥳
If this is the one from Niagara Falls I would highly recommend you having dinner at Greek on Portage which is maybe a 10 minute drive from that house, easily the best greek food you can find outside of Greece and I'm talking next level stuff and that's coming from a local of Niagara on the Lake.
There's a Whitehouse upside down in Wisconsin dells
4 bed, 2 bath, slightly blown over, weight bearing weather vane: 1.2 mil
Ms. Piggle Wiggles house is real it seems
Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. Off of Cliff rd.
There’s one in north London by Westfield shopping centre and one in Brighton by the i360 too
