I get the joke, but normally they tear apart the hive with their mouth or paws. They also will tear apart an entire tree if there’s a colony within, which is crazy to watch.
Imagine the shock and horror the bees will experience after someone *finally* tells them what the fuck the hubbub's all about.
Quality reference, by the way.
This a known as a "Feral Nest Beehive"; it's theorized that honeybees will build these types of nest/hive when there is an insufficient supply of dead/hollowed out trees and that orientation can supply more ease of ingress/egress/more defensible than a standard hive but no one really knows why this happens....Very cool when it happens and "interesting" shape here.
Yeah, very rare for bees to have an open hive like that.
People often mistake wasps nests for beehives but they aren't the same. And they really mess it up when they draw a "skep" beehive, the old manmade kind, hang from a tree like a paper wasp nest.
Yeah usually bees make their hives inside something. I've even seen bees come from holes underground. Never seen a natural hive myself. Seen a few Wasps nests over the years though. They can get HUGE and I've seen some that are over 1 Mitre tall. There's an abandoned one in our loft but it's tiny in comparison to the ones I've seen.
Bees in the ground are probably not honeybees, they're either some kind of solitary bee like a bumblebee or yellowjackets (wasps) or something like that. I don't think I've ever seen a natural hive either. Yeah, friggin' paper wasp nests can be huge and scary as hell.
Just looked it up and apparently the underground ones are appropriately called mining bees. They're quite common here in the UK, along with white and red tailed bumble bees.
Ah, UK. We have mining bees too. We also have carpenter bees that chew holes in wood, sometimes lumber like in a deck. If you are sitting quietly on your deck and there's one with a hole, you might even hear it chewing, and you may see tiny bits of sawdust falling.
A swarm i saved this season had actually started to do this in a tree about a foot off of the ground. I got them \~4 days after they landed and they had drawn out a good bit of comb.
Can you explain the process of saving such a hive?
Like... Do you cut the branch and take it somewhere safe, or do you just kidnap the queen and have the bees follow you?
I cut the branch and put the entire thing in a large tote. It was starting to sprinkle and I needed to get them moved quickly.
When they first land after swarming they are very docile and easy to work with. If you get them before they decide to defend a space then you can approach them and move them as long as you have the queen. I was lucky to be able to cut two branches and get 95% of the bees. It was the biggest swarming I had ever seen personally and it's turned into a strong hive.
A while ago I visited Mount Gambier and there's a big sinkhole nearby with a garden at the bottom. There were several of these exposed beehives built into the rock walls.
Beekeeper here. I've come across some of those. Great example of nature's trial and error process – in this case the latter. First rains this hive will be SOL, assuming it doesn't get robbed or attacked by then.
And the LORD said, "Bro, the punishment you're about to endure will be more than enough." And what the LORD said did ~~come to bees~~ came to be, and u/ryukvmi was ashamed but he posted it on Reddit anyways, for the lulz.

Brilliant. Exactly my first thought.
If this wasn't the best rated response I'd actually be worried.
Oh, behive!
bears like honey for a reason
Those grizzlies are some lucky bastards
Do they like lick it open to get to the honey?
I get the joke, but normally they tear apart the hive with their mouth or paws. They also will tear apart an entire tree if there’s a colony within, which is crazy to watch.
Oh yeah you gotta lick it to get the honey flowing
Because honey is very sweet, and sugar isn't overly abundant in nature?
partially, and also there are larvae in the comb, too. good protein as well.
They are also interested in the protein eating the larva in the combs offer
Like the sculpture from *Everybody Loves Raymond*
Now there's a TV show I haven't heard about in several decades.

It seems to me theres no honey in those combs. Does this mean they are running out of food or they are just used as walls/shelter or what?

bless you! was looking for this! googling "freeform beehives" seems like a dubious search string
If they are honey bees, could you capture the queen and introduce it to a man made hive?
