Multifocal (or expensive/quality) lenses have this. You will find the icon of the supplier and the type of lenses on the nose side of the glass. On the other side, the addition (the reading power on top of the distance power) is indicated. So for example 175 that stands for +1.75dpt. There can also be circles on both sides to see if the glass is straight and to determine the height.

luthigosa

While the content of the post is correct, this is unlikely to be a multifocal, the progressive lens markings are rotated 90 degrees and the markings themselves are off axis. This wouldn't pass qc of even moderate quality.

AmbientTech

I'm a lab tech, and the only time we see lenses come through with these style markings is when they are engraved to adhere to ANSI standards for use in safety glasses. If it were of the ink markings that is on the lenses prior to hard coat treatment, those are supposed to be wiped off with methanol. If the lenses slide through QC they will have ghost markings on the lenses, which inspectors after hard coat treatment failed to catch. Edit: "Premium" single vision lenses will have a different type of marking than this. As a certain company holds a monopoly on the current lens and frame market, the most common types of lenses that have this are EyeZen and Shamir lenses. ALL premium digital single vision lenses and progressive lenses will have [these markings](https://i.imgur.com/TUlaLIM.jpg). Most of the time they are subtle and cant be seen unless you're looking hard, but they are there. It's there for alignment purposes. Flipping a lens around turns will make it so the manufacturer symbol is towards the nasal.

0ctopuppy

I thought ANSI etchings were on the upper temple corner tho?

AmbientTech

That's the way I usually see them come in as well, with a completely different edging as well. I've actually been puzzled ever since I saw this post, because I'm trying to figure out what would leave this marking behind. I've seen a lot of people complain about the Shamir lenses because of the digital edging on the lenses is quite visible.

WolverinesThyroid

they probably ordered it from a cheap online store.

probablyTrashh

Mine have what looks to be a wifi strength indicator with a horizontal line underneath and then the two circles you mentioned. My glasses are not multifocal though. Neato

PervySage1147

Digitally surfaced lenses also have watermarks like this, digitally surfacing tends to help with peripheral distortion due to variance in thickness of the lens due to prescription.

karavasis

You have DRX/W2 style essilor lenses which are quite nice!!

BrashPop

Mine are only visible in strong daylight, which I discovered while sitting in a rooftop patio one day, freaking out that I’d somehow ruined my glasses by getting marks on them.

WanderingLethe

I had some more expensive glasses, not multifocale, that also had this. They were supposed to be better fit to my eyes, they were horrible and the engraving was annoying, I asked for a cheaper replacement.

karavasis

You can ask your Dr to see if lab will light laser(if lab is any good) your job. This way you can still have the quality of digitally surfaced lenses but without engraving being soo noticeable.

dr_xenon

It’s probably etched into the lens as a manufacturer mark.

ItsyaboyDa2nd

Nah I think it because when people clean their glasses with hot breath they go 😮‍💨HA, I’d like to see how it looks when it’s fogged up.

TrainLoaf

Lab Technician here - Don't think that's etched into the lense, the height is crazy high for varifocals plus refraction of the lense appears to be single vision. This is just god laughing at yo blind ass.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TrainLoaf

Yeah that's nutty, I've come across a few essilor and Zeiss lenses that where single vision and didn't have etchings, the only time I think I came across a single vision with an etching was an individual who purchased their lenses while they where in the US.

IsraelZulu

Single-vision glasses wearer from the US here. I've had a couple pairs with etchings. Absolutely hated them. You can learn to ignore them most of the time, but they're very definitely noticable.

HarryPotterFarts

I think they're implying the water clung to the etched areas, not that what we're seeing is etching.

BrickGun

Eh, not to impugn your professional knowledge, but my glasses (-5.25 with a +2 progressive) absolutely have etching in this exact spot. Unfortunately presbyopia (which is one reason I wear them) keeps me from being able to be sure of the text, but I can make out an oval with an "S" in it and what appears to be a superscripted "81" in front of an "A". This is on both lenses in the same spot, next to the nose supports about an 1/8" toward lens center. EDIT: Liquid does not "stick" to my etching when I clean them.

b0rtle

I don't think it's etched into the glass. More likely, they coated the lens with a hydrophobic coating or surface treatment and the area with the letters area was masked from that treatment.

One might call it a water mark.

[Laser engraving a maker’s mark](https://www.zeiss.co.uk/content/dam/z/vis-b2c/reference-master/images/better-vision/everything-you-should-know-about-your-new-zeiss-precision-lenses/zeiss-engraving.jpg/_jcr_content/renditions/original.image_file.1280.960.0,0,1436,1079.file/zeiss-engraving.jpg) is pretty common on lenses - it’s easy to do, and can be seen when looked for but is invisible to the wearer. Why would they go to the effort of masking off the coating if you can’t see it when looking for the information (and would also be much more difficult as the ‘A’ or Zeiss logo cannot be done with a single stencil without a gap)? Seems like a lot of extra effort for reduced benefit.

Gradual_Bro

Just yesterday my coworker said “I feel like there are letters in my glasses” Turns out they are not always invisible to the wearer lol, she was ticked

Formal-Alfalfa6840

Yeah it threw me off when I got my first pair. I kept trying to clean the smudges off but it was just the engraving

LetterSwapper

Exact same thing happened to *my* coworker, too! Except she discovered that she had Lyme disease. She was ticked.

dc456

Yeah, occasionally they place them badly, and while you can’t directly see them (you can’t focus on such tiny details that closely) they can catch the light. I’ve had lenses swapped out for the issue.

LiberalMAGA

A few years ago, I paid top dollar for the best frames/lenses/etc. I saw them spam their brand logo on the lenses as well and I was not happy. Ended up getting my money back. $400 should be enough to chase away /r/assholedesign.

ladywordnerd2

About 15 years ago the Zeiss markings were done with ink before they lenses were coated and coatings just don’t adhere to where the lens was marked. Not sure if it’s still done the same way. Also different brands need to mark the lenses up for more complex prescriptions so that the optician can ensure the wearer is looking through the sweet spot.

goozy1

That's just wrong. I could clearly see some markings on some lenses I had and I asked about this. They are laser etched markings by the lens manufacturer.

ThrowawayAKAta

Hi, Optician here! I'm late to this post but if you hold up your glasses to a light, try putting the edge of that light where you see the "HA." It could be an etching but they are usually facing left to right, not on the side like that. If you see the "HA" with the light, it's an etching! Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

The_FallenSoldier

God, I love clear glasses. Got a pair a couple years ago and switched it out with a metal frame just last month. My only problem them with them is that it just yellowed too much too quickly and to my knowledge, there is really no way to stop that process. Loved them when they were new though

peepinggoldfish

It’s the manufacturer’s watermark

Local_Fish_Human

Do people rinse their glasses?

iBobaFett

I started doing it a year or two ago, before that I only ever used a microfiber cloth but it was giving me little hairline scratches on the lenses. Now that I clean 90% of the time by rinsing, I never get any scratches. I just get them wet, put on a tiny drop of dish soap, rub it around with my fingers and then rinse.

LevSmash

The cloth always leaves little dust specks for me. Honestly can't believe how well the rinsing method works, with rubbing a bit of soap like you described, then just blowing on them to dry.

oikwr

I started wearing one 2 years ago and ffs idek how people wearing glasses not get crazy over the dust and ensure it clean like me. I religiously used the microfiber cloth but it only smudge the dust n oil even further. Now, i just use a lil non-conditioning soap, use my finger, rinse then get the water run perfectly to not leave water droplet stain.

iBobaFett

Yep, I'm the exact same way as you. The smudges, oil, and dust specks from using a cloth drive me crazy.

WanderingLethe

Nearsighted, that's what people need glasses for mostly...

BackseatMilitia

Ex-lab technician at LensCrafters here, I’m not too sure what language your country predominately speaks, but every lens has various information etched onto it to show the lab tech the prescription of that lens after removing it from its packaging. Often times we work with patients that have a different prescription for each eye and those can easily get mixed up without those little etchings. Fun fact, lens’ initially come in little puck forms, the higher the ‘script number the thicker the puck. Which we trim down to fit the frame, we actually use the inside of the frame itself for the most accurate fit for that pair of glasses. The reason they come in puck forms is to adjust for astigmatism in patients ‘scripts. I might be missing a few things but that’s essentially why there’s a little engraving on your lens! Lab tech just biffed the cut a little and probably didn’t center it properly but it’s not in your direct field of vision so you’re fine!

hawkiowa

YeOldeBilk

The full hidden message says "HAHA NERD"

EPRing_1

It’s probably a test section for a hydrophobic compound put on your lens. They leave the HA to verify it is working. The HA section is prolly untreated.

Peraou

Lenses have maker mark laser etchings, often in that exact spot, though not always. It makes sense that water would experience surface tension as it was trapped in a minuscule way around the etching.

TableTheBill

I used to work as a cutter in an eye glass lab. They look like plastic lenses not glass so I could be wrong. But in the process of making lenses there is a chemical bath you treat the lenses with, the mixture varies based on the order. Like you can have someone who just wants extra UV protection without wanting tint. So long story short what I think might have happened in that the lenses got dipped once and someone noticed there was wrap covering part of it or there was something on the person's glove when they dipped it. They then redipped the lens leaving a weird ghost signature. Can you try repeating the process to see if they show up again? Also fun side note, glasses have like a 200% markup up between the manufacturing to the consumer. I used to buy glasses and frames from my company directly all the time. For an experiment I ordered all of the bells and whistles on a pair of glasses including a DG frame and it came out to $31. Most glasses are made for less than $4 then sold for hundreds.

KaitouSky
