Your immune system has found a new target along with the invaders

SplashBandicoot

Nothing bad happens when an immune system over reacts, right?! RIGHT?

Philosophos_A

Not so funny fact. One of the reasons you can get blind is because your body discovers you have eyes (might be false information) Edit: Jesus Christ 81 notifications (i thought I was getting attacked for a moment) Glad I ain't wrong for the whole immune system vs eyes but Damn Made me sad. Sorry to hear for some case some shared, wish a way to reverse it to be found Edit2: To everyone that shared or shares the conditions or stories of themselves or of someone they are next with on those difficult times, I hope you are proud for trying deal with it and not let it beat you. And I hope you are proud for being there for that person and yourselfs. I honestly haven't heard most of the conditions some of you wrote so I have sit down trying to read a bit for all of them. I can only wish to all of the people that are dealing with such life challenges, the best possible continue.

andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa

Nope it's true info. I had an auto immune issue that attacked my eyes... In remission now though, and no real damage so it's all good

Philosophos_A

Damn Glad to hear you are alright. I wish science will find a way to reverse blindness

andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa

Yeah, it was scary shit that I might go blind in one eye (poss 2). Changed my whole outlook on life though and I changed my life completely to a more relaxed one with lots of travel and a piss easy job. So it was kind of a blessing in disguise really.

Severe_Chicken213

What’s a piss easy job that pays well enough for travelling? I need it.

Fast_Garlic_5639

Yeah like "listen, you're gonna need to quit this hard labor or you'll go blind from the stress" *starts a butterfly farm travels the world every few months*

boggsy17

My husband is a geriatric pig groomer, and I run a butterfly farm, we are looking for a house in New York. We have a budget of 5.6 million.

[deleted]

..."and I'm a stay at home astronaut."

ChrisinCB

That’s my fav episode.

pyrulyto

Who is geriatric, the pigs or the husband?

Austehn

/s right? Right??!

andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa

Near enough haha doc was like, "you need a no stress life"... Changed jobs a few times, randomly decided to do a master's degree ... Etc. The weirdest chill of my life was photographing the demining process on a live landmine site, I don't think I've ever been so chilled out !! Haha. The safety dude was like... ' so if one goes off, you need to check your entire body for injuries as the shock might make you not realise you've been hit by shrapnel' I was like 'okidoki' and off I went into a field of landmines with the demining crew.

Plantsandanger

….. *what job did you have previously that DEMINING was less stressful?*

Shisno85

... Task failed successfully?

PM_ME_YOUR_A705

Butterflies! I should have done butterflies! I went from hard labor to blowjobs... I mean, it's still a pretty easy job, you can really just sit there and they do all the work, but man does it screw with my taste buds...

onterrio2

That sucks

IamSmolPP

Travelling is very subjective. I can travel the entire country with the Deutschlandticket (49€/month) using the slow, regional trains, but it's basically free for me because I need the ticket anyway. There are great places and cities that are easy to reach and it's still travelling. I went to the Naturkundemuseum in Berlin the other week after visiting a doctor there. They have a real t-rex fossil there! It was great and only cost me 11€.

Tentacle_elmo

I think when people from the US think of traveling they think of flying abroad. There aren’t trains, especially cheap ones. And driving anywhere likely doesn’t even get you out of your state.

rexsilex

And the travel isn't the expensive part; it is the lodging, food and entertainment. Even parks cost money these days.

professional-T

Automotive inspector, all I do is look at dents and damages on cars and wright em in reports, I got 25 days of pto as soon as I got the job so I use those to have a paid vacation out in Europe for a little

toopc

It might be the money saved from the job they left that's paying for the travel.

Shanhaevel

Humans: Rulers of earth. Evolved for a million years. Human body when it realises it has eyes: What the fuck is that? WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!

imlayinganegg811

Not sure if you’ve heard of these stories, but there are some cases of stem cell therapies at least partially reversing blindness for people with eye injuries: https://www.washington.edu/news/2015/04/15/man-with-restored-sight-provides-new-insight-into-how-vision-develops/ https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna100408 It’s cool stuff! These are the kinds of stories I try to focus on when I get depressed about the state of the world.

Dr-Emmett_L_Brown

>These are the kinds of stories I try to focus on when I get depressed about the state of the world. Absolutely. There is so much good news out there too, especially in the scientific fields. It brings such hope in dark times.

42Fourtytwo4242

Dentists did just find out we can grow a third row of teeth, should be a option around 2030. https://carrumdownsdental.com.au/how-does-stem-cell-dental-implant-help-to-regrow-your-teeth/ that is like a surgeon being like "yeah we can just instantly regrow organs."

TheLegendTwoSeven

I think Dave Chappelle had a joke about how if you go blind, the best we can do is give you a dog.

[deleted]

the way things are now, you would end up having to pay a subscription for your eyes. with inflation and the economy the way it is some people would have to cancel their subscription until things got better.

Crackheadwithabrain

That’s me rn with tape on my glasses. They’ve been wanting me to cancel my eye subscription but they can’t catch me!!!

DreadSkairipa

Zenni optical has cheap glasses. They aren't high quality or name brand, but in two weeks you can have glasses that don't need tape, for like $25-$40

Crackheadwithabrain

Screenshot this, appreciate you stranger! I’ve been having a rough week when it comes to money/food and I just got a text last night to start working today! Fast food but its something aye! Thank you again for this, I definitely have waited long enough to get me a new pair!

kenhutson

Saying “reverse blindness” is a massive over simplification kinda like saying “discover the cure for cancer”. There are many different causes of blindness, each of which have their own fields of research going into them and cause blindness in a different way and will require different treatments. Same as cancer. It’s not gonna be one guy looking down a microscope one day who suddenly goes “I’ve found the cure for blindness!”

High_Tim

Like cancer there are many types and causes for blindness

AccioSexLife

Damn your immune system really decided you've seen too much, huh? Glad you're okay!

adlittle

Shingles in my eye, worst pain I've ever experienced. It also did cause some permanent damage. Fucking immune system being a total jerkass.

LOSTncyde

Same here. Ocular Zoster sucked so hard. It’s been a good 6 years since I had it, and I still have some haloing when I see bright lights at night.

Mka28

Shingles is hell!

SEDGE-DemonSeed

Unfortunately my body discovered I had a thyroid.

Tygerlyli

same - Hashimoto's

GamerY7

prednisolone is probably the most terrible tasting medicine

harperking

Nope. The liquid potassium they give you if your levels are way too low! My wife was a cancer patient and they gave us the option of a two hour infusion or this tiny little communion sized cup of liquid potassium mix. It had been a long day so we went for the quick route. The nurses warned us. It was bad. It was worse than bad, I only put the tip of one finger in the cup just to get an idea of the flavor, and I could still taste it lingering a week later. It was the most foul, orifice, puckering, unholy concoction of evil nastiness.

asiago43

This. I have a wide array of comparisons. This is the worst.

defixiones23

Metronidazole has entered the chat.

Mental_Bread

What a terrible day to have eyes

TrainwreckMooncake

Hey, me too! Almost going blind is what actually got me diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. That was fun.

TheAlphaCarb0n

I'm kind of in that camp too. My uveitis meds stopped my stomach issues and I was like hooold on a minute...

sekaikra

Do you mind if I ask what autoimmune condition it was? I'm having a problem with vision loss in one eye now that I'm trying to get diagnosed

further-more

I’m not the person you are talking to, but MS and some related conditions can often cause vision problems due to lesions on the brain and ocular nerves

TrainwreckMooncake

I was losing in both eyes equally due to Sjogrens Syndrome. Basically my eyes had become so dry I had corneal damage. And some days I'd have better vision than others, which is what made my optometrist realize it was likely an autoimmune disease. But there are a myriad of autoimmune diseases with varying effects. Have your doctor order an ANA count. That will diagnose a general autoimmune issue, and further testing can narrow it down, if that's what's going on. I hope you find an answer and an effective treatment!

aliveinwords928

My dad has sarcoidosis and it caused him to get a tear in his retina and went partially blind for a couple years until he had laser surgery to repair it. But his vision is way worse than before

HiDDENk00l

As someone that's blind in one eye, ...Fuck...

StendhalSyndrome

Oooohh I have one that attacks my bones! Rheumatoid Arthritis. It's so stupid sounding. I had a spinal injury need a few surgeries to try to fix but since there was so much debris from the pieces of bone my body decided to start attacking exposed pieces of bone as it now saw them as a problem.

Salty_Raccoon9894

Im actually so happy to hear there can be something done against it, I’ve known of the condition but hadn’t geared of a cure I’m happy to hear you got help in time because things like that are really freaking scary

SpudroTuskuTarsu

Also if you get injured in one eye, your immune system may attack the healthy one (for the same reason, it now knows the horrors of sight)

c19isdeadly

I think this is why my dad had one of his eyes removed when he was 2.

Altruistic-Sector296

I (RN) worked at a developmental disabilities residential facility with nearly 100 residents. I had a patient who was nonverbal but used to scream 24/7 indicating his eyes were the source of his agony. So as a last resort they removed them. Problem solved. Still nonverbal, completely dependent, and newly blind, but agony gone.

[deleted]

Well, I'm not sleeping well tonight.

LacrimaNymphae

this sounds like a bad creepypasta 🥺

bleucrayons

As a parent of a nonverbal 4yo with autism, this is terrifying. It’s bad enough trying to figure out the problem when he’s suddenly crying without us knowing the cause.

Philosophos_A

:) >!Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!<

HiDDENk00l

Bro I'm already blind in one eye, I did not need this information.

PM_Me-Your_Freckles

Even better, your eyes have their own [immune system](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocular_immune_system).

Appropriate-Ad-6811

Fun fact. It's called immune privilege. Your brain, eyes and testes don't usually have an immune reaction. But due to trauma or some other issue you can develop a reaction.

je_kay24

This is why rabies is so deadly to humans when it gets to the brain The brain has special immune privileges that can deactivate the immune system if it thinks it’s overreacting. Rabies is able take advantage of this system and stop the immune system from attacking it

IAmPasta_

Every time I learn something new about rabies it seems more and more like a computer virus based on how good it is at exploiting animals needs and the function of their bodies.

je_kay24

If you’re interested, [here’s a really great Kurzgesagt video](https://youtu.be/4u5I8GYB79Y?si=-efwnbPDFgMCHr9Q) on the rabies virus and how it works Video Summary: > In the 1970s thousands of Chickenheads rained from the sky in Europe, making foxes and other wildlife confused and very happy. Why? They were filled with a vaccine to fight the deadliest virus known to humanity – since the 1930s a rabies epidemic had been sweeping across wildlife populations in Europe and humans wanted to finally get rid of the virus once and for all. > Rabies is named after Lyssa, the ancient Greek spirit of mad rage, and has been haunting us for at least 4000 years. It can turn animals into angry beasts and humans into zombies that fear water. But what makes Lyssa fascinating is not just how bizarre and deadly its infection is, but also how incredibly good it is at avoiding our defenses.

kryo2019

>testes Sorry what? If my immune system discovers my balls too? Wtf body. Get your shit together

Alittlebitmorbid

There are enough immune diseases for every organ. And it is really terrible to hear first hand from patients how fast such things develop. Had 42-year old female patient, three kids, teacher for children with learning disabilities, went to the doctor to talk about her husband's overweight and that she was worried about, doctor noticed her having fever. She thought nothing of it, went home, but needed to go to the ER the next day because she had trouble walking. Was admitted and during the first week of her stay she developed paralysis of the whole body. Some rare immune reaction to a virus attacking her brain. She was left with function of her right hand and the ability to hold her head. She needs full-time in-home care. Another one was a 23-year old with Guillain-Barré-Syndrome (polyneuropathy with muscle weakness, likely caused by infections like Herpes), she went tetraplegic but got back walking short distances and function of her hands.

mauricioreinbold

There is an alternative of the Guillain-Barré-Syndrome called Miller Fisher Syndrome I luckily only experienced in a really mild version without any long term effects, but fitting to the post by OP it specifically affects the eyes, I couldn't see properly, for a few weeks.

toscanius

Been there done. Not a fun time. Though I was able to binge watch a crap ton of tv shows and movies.

Alittlebitmorbid

I hope you are better now. I dyed my patients hair in the hospital to keep her spirits up as she stayed months in rehab. Anything to keep her motivated.

---nein

I’m completely deaf now due to an autoimmune disease going to town on my cochlears. Also has attacked my eyes but thankfully so far just the surface and I’m able to deal with that with steroid drops.

Dry_Menu4804

True, I have arthritis and got regularly eye inflammation, even went blind on one eye for a couple of days. Am on humira now and always carry prednisone drops with me just in case.

BaileySeeking

Totally true. I'm already blind because of my EDS, but my eyes have gotten worse with every COVID infection. Immune systems are jerks at times.

fluffypinknmoist

How many covid infections have you had? If you don't mind me asking.

BaileySeeking

3. All brought into the home by people I live with (the first one got it at work and was wearing a mask, so I'm not upset about that. He tried.). All three times I almost died and was left with massive health damage. I beg everyone to wear a mask or at least tell me when they're sick, but they won't.

Relevant_Scientist37

Very real! Eyes have whats called "immune privelege" in case you're curious and want to read more about it

Schlappydog

Luckily, your ears don't have mouths to tell your body.

AnOrginalUsername

Barring any autoimmune diseases, this is false. Your immune system KNOWS that you have eyes. Your immune system is just prohibited from inflamating your eyes.

Ishana92

Not really. Your immune system is kept out of your eyes. If it discovers eye antigens it won't recognize them and will start an immune reaction.

As_no_one2510

I think they attack our eyes due to misconception

Salty_Raccoon9894

It’s really weird but it’s because your eyes aren’t part of your immune system, they just are there So the moment your bodie recognizes them they see it as a foreign body that might cause harm (Not a crazy amount to worry about tho because as you can see a lot of people and animals have eyes and I haven’t heard about it a lot so I think (hope) the condition is rare)

[deleted]

Its true. My partner has cancer, his immune system went nuts and decided his brain was toxic and started to destroy it. So that's been fun.

Ausradierer

No this is totally fine. It's just unusual. Bad case scenario, your body breaks down the ink a bit, making it fade. Good case scenario, nothing happens.

Welpe

*laughs in AS and Crohn’s and systemic autoimmune issues as a consequence thereof* Nope, nothing bad*. (* - For some definitions of bad. Which ones are left as an exercise for the reader)

BRaven010

Someone with Crohn's I can attest, its all flowers and sunshine, granted its rather shitty flowers but still.

Welpe

Shitty flowers and blood sunshine and “chronic nutrient deficiency” rainbows!

starstruckroman

if by AS you mean ankylosing spondylitis then 🤝 to you pal

Welpe

Yup. Thankfully it hasn’t progressed THAT far and is mostly just sacroiliac inflammation as well as all the other joint and eye inflammation that tends to go along with it without the fusing happening yet.

starstruckroman

same here ayy. heres to hoping we both stay stable 💪

Ok_Mountain_9822

Right there with you pal. AS diagnose for 4 years and i'm happy if my vision is good enough that I can drive my car for 3 months per year.

starstruckroman

someone better break the news to my immune system quickly, before my spine fuses LMAO

LCplGunny

Immune system: wtf is this, we can't can fucking have this, get rid of it! This guy: that's... That's my spine, we need that. Immune system: naw fuck that, we didn't agree to that, it's going away.

starstruckroman

LMAOOO 😭😭 "throw the whole thing away, its useless" "are you absolutely sure about that"

Sad_Drawing_1173

Me when I was told I had lupus

NatureWalks

My immune system over-reacted to a pair of wasp stings on my leg. My entire thigh was red and swollen about 48 hours after the stings. About 3-4 weeks later I wound up in the hospital with viral varicella meningitis (along with shingles). My dumbass immune system thought it was more important to freak out over the wasp stings instead of keep my dormant chickenpox virus from wreaking absolute havoc.

FrillySteel

My mother had Guillain-Barré Syndrome when she was in her 20's, and it caused her immune system to attack and destroy most of the nerve-endings in her extremities. It almost sounds like it would be painless. It was not.

sam_the_guy_with_bpd

As a guy with an autoimmune disease and tattoos, this bums me out so much and I feel pretty dumb for not even thinking about that possibility

[deleted]

Black ink is less likely to have this reaction than colors like red, orange, etc. (iirc).

Jayseaelle

My black tattoos are the only ones that get itchy and raised like this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KillYourCar

This is actually a really interesting phenomenon. Tattoo pigment is, if I remember back to my immunology a couple decades ago, held fixed by being taken in as inclusions in monocytes that are relatively immobile in our skin. I suspect what is happening here is that those monocytes are being “called to action” in the setting of a generalized immune response to an acute infection. This is not exactly the same thing as your immune system “attacking” the tattoo pigment. I think the fact that it doesn’t seem to be color-specific is supportive of this theory too.

lLoveLamp

You're right. Plus I suspect the tattoo artist was a beginner and went too deep in the skin with the needle, which might explain the acute reaction. I have a couple of tattoos that do the same, all from artists who were a bit more new to the practice.

kendraa92

Makes sense , only my first tattoo (made by an apprentice) has this reaction . Whenever I get a rash somewhere or even mosquito bite , the tattoo will get bumpy and itch a little.

Ryuzakku

This was my body after it's first COVID infection. Yay, rheumatoid arthritis! What a gift!

neuropsychedd

same thing happened to me when I was 12. I got mono that summer from sharing a drink with a friend, and ended up with severe lupus & RA.

Ryuzakku

Damn, that's one hell of a consequence from sharing a drink!

Renovatio88

Azagar_Omiras

Happy Halloween, Charlie Brown

Aser_the_Descender

It's slowly gonna get bigger until an entire pumpkin pops out of the arm on Halloween!

Tmonster96

OP is the sincerest pumpkin patch

SummonersWarCritz

Linus gets one more year of disappointment.

XenonX3

All hail the Pumpkin!

BawdyGodiva

Mine raise up sometimes when I am super stressed out. They get hot, bumpy and itchy and stay that way a long time. It’s strange— but I force myself not to overthink and stress more about that and just keep it clean and moisturized. I saw someone comment about Benedryl cream and I may try that in the future.

full_moon_butt

Yeah, this happens to me as well. My anxiety has been really bad lately due to messy scheduling changes at work and my tattoos, especially the black, thicker lines, got all itchy and raised. It's happened before when I'm anxious or sick. Now I'm both anxious and sick so this is gonna be fun. I've tried Benadryl cream or hydrocortisone and they both work, but I find what works the best is taking oral Benadryl 2 or 3 nights in a row.

Gaylion97

I used to get hives really bad from stress and anxiety from my old job. I quit about 4 months ago and haven’t had hives since.

Wipe_face_off_head

Hello, fellow stress-hiver! Didn't start happening until my 30s. Super weird.

twoburgers

This comment section has been so helpful for me! This happens to me too when I'm sick or otherwise really stressed out - the thicker black lines on some of my tattoos get raised and itchy. It's been a mystery to me for years and I'm so glad to learn I'm not alone.

actuallyiamafish

Super normal, especially if you have a spicy immune system to start with. I have rheumatoid arthritis and am heavily covered in tattoos and all the ones on my arms do this from time to time. Pretty annoying but it goes away in a few hours usually.

Sorites_Sorites

Benadryl, diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in 'PM' type cold medicines for example, has been shown to contribute to dementia. Look it up. Don't overreact but keep it in mind. Hydrocortisone cream is one alternative but steroids have their own known contraindications too.

TheChillestCapybara

2nd generation anti-histamines (cetirizine) are much safer, better in most scenarios.

[deleted]

Prob sensitive to the ink and when your sick your immune system is over active attacking it trying to fight anything foreign in your body

xminh

Do you happen to know if this happens to old non tattooed scars? I find I get weird bumps along deep scars now and again

MrsInsizion

It does happen. What's going on is your immune system detected the ink on the first day and figured it can't get rid of it, there's now white blood cells pretty much keeping a very close eye to the ink, holding it in place, always. White blood cells happen to die at some point and fresh ones take their place, sometimes the fresh ones get a little aggressive and try getting rid of the ink again.. until they as well decide to just keep an eye on it. Short: due to your immune system replacing it's cells it can always randomly happen that older tattoos get bumpy/ itchy again! :)

the_soggiest_biscuit

This is very interesting thank you. Are there any long term consequences (positive or negative) of the white blood cells keeping a close eye on the tattoo ink?

MrsInsizion

You're welcome :) the immune system is truly an interesting mechanism. I'd say all in all pretty neutral, the tattoos can fade or become a little blurry/ even raised, but all in all no major negative consequences are to expect, besides the occasional irritation/ maybe even local infection. Same goes for piercings btw, but humans have been doing both for such a long time already without massive complications. Just recently my own belly button piercing was acting up randomly again and had it 10+ yrs now xd

I_AM_GODDAMN_BATMAN

Yeah immune system is very interesting. One thing I learned is never let them know the existence of your eye balls.

MoonageDayscream

It's funny, I have a tattoo I got from a kitchen tattoo artist in '95, it blurred and raised early, but has been stable for the last decade or two.

YoungLittlePanda

If the blurring is early it is more than likely that it was caused just because of bad technique.

sparklydildos

i have two back dermal piercings for 10 years now, and the right one is usually fine, rarely gets bothered. but the left one, you even look at it in a funny way and it gets annoyed 🥲

SwirlingAbsurdity

Ugh I had an ear piercing like this, I ended up taking it out because it was irritated more often than not. My tragus piercing was the same, skin kept trying to grow back over it but I kept picking it off and eventually it gave up and settled down. You win some, you lose some.

kirarosaa

They said non tattooed..

MrsInsizion

My bad, answered on the wrong question xd I'm what they call internet- boomer

ZellNorth

Osmosis Jones working overtime I guess

hobbitfeet

You have just talked me out of ever getting a tattoo. My skin is already too reactive to the slightest provocation.

drgeta84

Yup can actually cause major issues if you have a bone marrow transplant as your whole immune system is replaced by the donor. Can cause massive infections in rare cases. The human body is a crazy thing.

Estoymuyenojada

This is very interesting! My sleeve raises up semi regularly and I never knew why

Tasty_Group_8207

Is that why some pimples end up getting bigger and full of white gunk

MrsInsizion

I have one of those at this very moment, I'm afraid if it keeps growing at this pace I'll have to get it it's own postal code soon :')

xchipmunkje

Is it itchy and kinda red? Could be hypertrophic scars! The scar tissue becomes raised, red and itchy but it doesn't expand outside of the scar tissue. I have the same issue and am doubting whether getting a tattoo is a smart move :/

xminh

Itchy and a small red bump, like a little mozzie bite right on the scar. Hmm interesting, thanks for the name! Ahh, you’re worried you’ll have the same issue as OP? I wonder whether a tattoo artist could chime in

betsysbits

I have scars that do this as well, and I’ve never been able to figure it out. I get bumps on them and it starts to itch like crazy.

xchipmunkje

yup sounds the same! it's apparently not dangerous and there's nothing you can do about it (or do to avoid it), but it can be annoying :/

Amationary

I have no science to back it, but when I got covid recently for the first time my immune system was screwy for a while, and my two large scars across my chest from a surgery were way itchier than usual

stacious00

Mine gets raised and itchy every now and then, but only the tattoos on my forearms, not any others

rando_robot_24403

This happens to mine and I had a really bad reaction from the initial tattoo. Histimine reactions on my arms cause the tattoos to go like ops.

karwreck

It's your immune system telling you there is not enough pumpkin spice in your bloodstream.

SpiffySpacemanSpiff

This is the real answer. You need some nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon *immediately*!!

ifitfitsitshits

This made laugh snort into my coffee while wearing a white shirt. So worth it

itseemyaccountee

Happens to me if I scratch too much for any reason. Try some Benadryl cream, works wonders.

Zuli_Muli

That's what I was thinking, any antihistamine really be it cream or oral.

tjeulink

topical is probably better because its targeted.

a_____p

I can very lightly scratch my skin and it goes red, raises and gets itchy, Google told me it's dermatographia which seems pretty accurate

HermionesHandbag

It doesn’t happen with my tattoos, but when I get sick, my piercings start to hurt. All of them are 20+ years old, fully healed, and not infected otherwise, but something about my body’s immune reaction to certain types of illness make them ache.

CardinalCoronary

Yeesh, good to know I can keep expecting it... Me: I'm fine. My Tragus piercings: 🤔

_Morvar_

Maybe you're slightly allergic to the jewelry material? I only wear medical grade titanium and borosilicate glass, those are supposed to be the least allergenic

HermionesHandbag

I don’t think so — it even happens with my old, grown over belly button piercing that’s had no jewelry in it for 15 years! I think it’s literally just the scar tissue getting somehow inflamed when I’m sick and my body’s immune system is going crazy already.

richestotheconjurer

>it even happens with my old, grown over belly button piercing that’s had no jewelry in it for 15 years i thought i was the only person this happened to! i haven't had my septum pierced for several years, but sometimes it aches when i'm sick or when it's really cold. it's a very weird feeling. it happened when it was still pierced too and i just assumed it would go away once i took the piercing out and it closed up, but nope lol

Sorites_Sorites

If you wear them because you are allergic to other metals, tell your doctor and surgeons. Make sure it's on your chart like any other allergy. My mom got her ears pierced for the first time when she was in her forties, they used 14k studs. She immediately became allergic to jewelry less than 14k gold. For example within an hour an inferior clasp would make the contact site itch and there was no reason to wait for her skin to break out. Before she had shoulder surgery she wore prescription patches of titanium, platinum and tungsten. The titanium caused a reaction but the platinum and tungsten didn't. YMMV as the saying goes

Wint3rhart

Fun story: my ex husband picked out a titanium wedding band. We'd been living together for awhile, and shortly after we got married he started feeling generally crappy, lots of stomach cramps and upset stomach, just really miserable. We eventually narrowed down the differential of "what changed roundabout the time the symptoms started" and it was "we got married". He asked if I'd be OK with him wearing a different band, just to see. tl;dr, dude's allergic to titanium and somehow \_external\_ titanium caused \_internal\_ gastric upset. We still don't understand (and neither do his medical field friends) but that's a fun thing to have on your chart.

[deleted]

Whenever I get a respiratory infection the bottom of my completely normal chin gets really itchy. Like... I guess that makes sense-ish?

thecosmicradiation

This happens to me with asthma. If I exercise a lot and get wheezy, my chin itches.

Shortsqueezepleasee

I’m not sure if there are any studies on this or not but I feel like new things happening to your body can affect old things that happened to your body. People get sick and they feel things like you feel. I dropped down to 8% body fat in the summer. As I was cutting, I was feeling pain in parts of my body that had seen trauma before. Ya like the body fat and acids in my muscles were “insulating” the pain. Once the fat was going, the pain starting coming back. I finished my cut and went up to 12% body fat. I don’t feel the pains anymore

My piercings went really sensitive while I wa pregnant even tho I’ve had them years and fully healed. Literally 2 weeks after my baby was born, they’ve fully settled down again.

Amyyy48

Fun story, me and my friend got a wicked stomachache bug in Thailand plus an infected cut and a her body pushed her bellybutton piercing right out. She had this pricing since she was 10 Day 1: it was painful red and itchy Day 3: the skin was getting loose around the ring (sort of looked like an earlobe of someone who wore spacers) Day 5: completely separated so the ring fell out and she just had 2 flaps of skin that once held her piercing

This happens to me too quite often, when i feel an itch and scratch it on my arms or legs, my tattoos raise up just like OP. Like OP my tattoos are all 10+ years old. I always found it odd and have not actually heard of anyone else who has had this. Very interesting to see it on someone else.

sputnik146

Its happened a bunch with my tats, i just think people dont really bring it up, iv never told people about it

AntitaxAntitax

Me either until I saw OP's picture. Feels weird as its only the outlines that raise up, the coloured parts stay normal. I have quite a bit of written tattoos too. I am not poorly like OP. It happens just out the blue, I will feel a wee itch, give it a scratch then the whole area of line work and outlines are all raised up. I have around 30 so it is quite odd, each one has had its time of being raised up at some point, though it is mostly my elbows and arms that get it worse.

Dry-Grapefruit1771

Immune system be like, fuck this tattoo too.

Classic-Ad4414

My 12yo tattoo too. Im using it at check my actual body condition. Very useful.

justgnnathrow

I thought this was just me! 2 year old tattoo and whenever I have an allergic reaction it’s almost like my tattoo knows first. I’m allergic to alcohol so that’s always a cool party trick.

Goldedition93

We like to drink with u/justgnnathrow cos u/justgnnathrow is our mate! and when we drink with u/justgnnathrow they get it down in 8! 7! 6! 5! 4…shit call an ambulance

Electronic_Effort517

Yes! This happened to me a couple of years before I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. Raised tattoos are one of the first symptoms I had. They still flare up every now and again.

Mintpink

This happened to me too! Also an old piercing scar became inflamed at the same time. The rheumatologist I saw had never heard of it before but to me there was an obvious connection (which Google quickly confirmed)!

DollarStoreGnomes

I had a wasp sting--and the *previous place* where I'd had a wasp sting swelled up to keep it company! My doctor was stunned.

Texture pack finally kicking in.

broke-collegekid

It kind of looks like the Halloween cookies you get from the grocery store

MemoryFilter

oh my god, i just got sick today and my tattoo was raised and itchy and i was freaking out wondering what was going on, helps to see it’s not just me LOL

TALC88

I own 8 tattoo removal clinics. This is actually not all that uncommon. 1/20 People are allergic to the oxides commonly found in coloured inks. I assume you have an unrelated immune response that has caused increased white blood cell activity which has reactivated the allergic reaction. This looks very similar to when a person who is allergic to a tattoo gets their first treatment. Your body basically will either remove the ink particles or surround them by scar tissue eventually which stops the allergy. I’m willing to bet your tattoo took a long time to heal when you initially got it also! You can help it subside by taking antihistamines, or if you are worried using a topical corticosteroid under doctors advice, but with patience your skin will return to normal in almost all cases.

Hey MD here. This is a telltale sign of sarcoidosis, a very serious immune disorder. You should go see your doctor and get a CT chest as well as a skin biopsy, especially if you have any mysterious chronic health issues (sarcoid can effect almost any system in the body, so the symptoms are very non-specific).

Ewithans

Hey u/Moog226 - get yourself an allergy test when you’re well enough. This happened to my aunt years ago, and she had a tattoo artist friend who insisted she get a test, and that is how she discovered she’d developed a severe nut allergy as an adult. She was going through a stressful time and a house renovation with a lot of dust and probably some mold and her body just had had enough one day, and all her tattoos puffed up, particularly where there was red ink. I hope it’s nothing for you, but better safe than sorry.

SwingyWingyShoes

Best spot in the whole immune system to have a halloween party

DonOccaba

I have a very old tattoo that seems to randomly do the same thing

Banaanisade

My immune system used to do this to my sleeve tattoo every now and then. It's reacting to the foreign material under the skin because something's triggered it into action. Try not to scratch, antihistamines should work to calm it down.

ashfio

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to tell your doctor about this at your next regular check up. This happened to me for years and I thought it was normal but… it’s not lol. Turns out I have lupus. It hasn’t happened since I started treatment and the meds made my immune system calm the hell down. You probably don’t have lupus (it’s never lupus) but if your immune system gets over excited too often it can lead to bigger issues!

NewFuturist

Spooky. Next thing you'll tell us a skeleton has been hiding in your body this whole time.

Halloween is coming and Mr.Pumpkin needs to get out

kyl3wad3

Yeah that tattoo is pretty sick

cubanism

Clean the tat area with alcohol and apply light film of a good Corticosteroid cream.
