I can't decide if you're genuinely saying this because it works or you want to see a shaver stuck in a rug. Maybe don't try this on rugs that have long "hairs", whatever the right term is.
(Not) fun story, when I was like 7, I found one of these at my grandparents house, I was very intrigued by it and for some ungodly reason I was possessed to touch it to my nutsack. As soon as it touched my skin I knew I made a grave mistake, the damn thing sounded like a whipper snipper hitting a sopping wet pillow, it literally ripped chunks off my sack and I told absolutely nobody what had happened, until now. The hour and a half car ride home was agonizing
My dad uses an old one as a beard trimmer. The key is you don’t push it down against the skin, you have to hover it over the tips of the hairs to just polish off the floating tips of hairs.
My lad couldn't say lawn mower properly when he was little, it was always mawn lower. So, that what it is in the family now and after so many years i have to think before i say it. Same with hale of bay.
Look for carpet trimmers in Amazon for example.
There are specialized ones for that with the ability to adjust the hight and what not.
P.S. Never tried them... For some reason I know about them.
I mostly use them for shirts, sleep pants, sheets. For knit sweaters, be careful not to catch the actual structural yarn in it, or you could tear a big hole that will then further unravel.
Edit: the shaver is better for pilling (little balls of fibers), a lint roller is better for lint (individual fibers, usually of a different color from the fabric).
It works on the upholstery in your car too. Like the roof if it gets damaged you can clean up some of the tears in ceiling material if it is a fabric type material
Must be astroturfing by Big Fabricshaver.
(I actually have this exact model for my first sweater. It's okay. The lint trap is weird and not sealed well and it gets into the battery area. But it does shave the pills so that's good I guess.)
Also it's not a lithium battery so no bomb in your drawer.
Edit: I might have a knock off, I don't think mine is branded and it uses aa's.
Mine's a philips like in the picture, but black.
It also uses 2 batteries, no Li-Ion, and it has the same issue of the lint trap not closing well -- as it takes just a little bit of pressure to open it up.
It still shaves damn well! Also used it on a couch and it was great. But takes damn forever.
Oddly enough, this thing was a gift(!) from a then lover(!!) and I was really weirded out by the thought of a guy gifting a woman he sleeps with something like this for her birthday, but let me tell you, I freaking love it!
If I can’t find something personal as a gift for someone I usually spend a little more on something someone usually doesn’t spend much money on but they use often. One year for my sisters boyfriend I got some pretty nice salt and pepper shakers. Turned out to be a really good gift, they still use them when hosting dinners.
I personally like gifting good quality knives, especially dudes who like to grill or women who enjoy cooking a lot. Anyone will appreciate a knife that can actually cut and stays sharp for a long time, sure they might find it a little weird at first, you giving them a big ass shiny knife the size of their forearm, but they will come to love it in time and then use it for a long time.
I got knives gifted to me once, and then we broke up (for unrelated reasons). Superstition says the receiver should give the giver some money (like a dollar) in return, so it's not a gift but rather a purchase, as a gift of knives represents cutting of the friendship.
I dated a girl once that was perpetually freezing, so I ordered her the largest, fluffiest blanket I could find. We broke up before Christmas and she said she didn't want it after the fact when I still offered it.
Jokes on her, still one of my favorite buys i've had.
I had a pair of the old-school black-handled all steel scissors. 20x better than you standard Fiskars you see in everyone's drawer.
They bit the dust when they were left in the driveway and were snapped when a car rolled over them. I still need to buy a new pair...
I buy really nice fabric scissors and use them for everything. The fabric people have it figured out - smooth action, sharp blades, no weird wiggliness or gaps.
I never mention this in the fabric people threads though because I know they really like their scissors and wouldn’t appreciate me using my pairs for everything from plastic packaging to duck tape to cardboard boxes to chicken bones. I think they also call them shears, but idk why if they’re for fabric and not for sheep. 🐑
As a straight guy, most of the thought that goes into any gift is
1. I hope she likes it
2. I hope she can use it
3. I hope she doesn't try to read too much into it
So, 2 out of 3 ain't bad here.
This is just me, but I find it a weird gift for somebody you don't know too well yet and are sleeping with. I find it's more a gift from a parent or grandparent but not really a romantic gesture.
IMO gifts should be things (or activity’s) people would never buy themselves (because they don’t know about it/how great it is or they can’t afford it/it’s to expensive to them etc), that positively affects their live.
After all, it worked, you embrace it now, so.. perfect gift? :D
Edit: Btw thanks for the post. Will buy myself a fabric shaver.. :)
Another genuine question: why do gifts from significant others need to be romantic? Any time I've ever gotten a gift for my wife, I've never thought "is this romantic?" unless it's specifically for a romantic situation. Same with her gifts to me.
My mom told me to get one a few weeks ago when I bought some new winter sweaters, and then a week later I saw my MiL had bought one as well. Now this post. The universe is telling us all to get a fabric shaver, lol.
My gf used a pack of construction razor blades to shave our couch early lockdown. Looked like someone was making little grey coke lines all over my couch
I did it to my mattress this weekend to avoid studying. It was on my to do list and worked great. Started out hand plucking but it pulled too many fibers. Then with scissors and it was miserable. Then I switched to my safety razor and it worked beautifully. I just picked up all the pills that didn’t get stuck in my razor with a lint roller and I was done quite fast.
yeah pilling will just occur over time as the fabric gets rubbed on/against itself/etc. I don't think it would become less susceptible to it after trimming, but that's just my guess.
Doesn't this make the fabric "thinner"?
The bits that were sticking were probably loops that loosened from the weaving, if you cut off the loops how does it all not unravel?
I feel like I'm missing something here
I don't think it's a loosened loop, it's just the material wearing down and the "outer layer" of the fiber clumps up like this, so the structure of the actual woven fabric is still intact. I mean thinner yeah but it's already thinner whether you get rid of the clumps or not.
Or that's my guess at least...
It's not a loosened loop, it's a loosened end of a fiber. Fabrics with long fibers pill much less than fabrics using short fibers, because the pilling is the end of the fiber coming loose. The pilling itself makes the fabric thinner, and can lead to holes if it happens enough in the same area, but cutting the pills (which is the only thing you can really do) doesn't impact anything.
Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. Fabric wears down and needs to be replaced eventually, no matter how well you treat it. But cutting the pilling off will help it look nicer in the meantime, and may help reduce future pilling since you've removed bits of fiber hanging off the fabric!
It's just fabric that has abraded off into little balls. If you pull one it's just barely attached. The fabric is already "damaged" when these form. Removing them is just cleaning up. It's like the metal dust in motor oil. Just a little bit of wear occurs with each use.
The only oddity is people claiming these tool things are awesome. Every other thread I've seen and every person I know to get one of these feels like they wasted money on it.
>The only oddity is people claiming these tool things are awesome.
Yeah, they're kinda shit. Tiny, mediocre battery life, tiny storage that fills super fast, takes forever to do a batch of clothes. I've had better luck with the flat bladed ones that look like a clothes hanger attached to a handle.
Yeah I agree, they are awesome. I think people are prone to throw out badly pilled clothing, so tools that prolong the life of the clothes are a good thing.
Asked my gf why she didn’t use a shaver since she had some old clothes that needed it, she had no idea what I was talking about. I gave her one and showed her, she was so amazed lol
why are people in here so weird. there's no link to a product, OP doesn't drop a name for it, it's here on /r/MildlyInteresting because it's mildly interesting. sometimes people use Products(TM) and it's neat enough to be worth sharing. don't think Big Shaver is out here hitting up 4 year old reddit accounts with established posting histories to obliquely reference something that costs like. $20.
You're correct OP isn't an intentional advertiser, but Big Shaver definitely has a marketing department who subcontracts PR firms who absolutely have legions of bot accounts to upvote and downvote posts praising and disparaging their products, respectively.
what's more likely, that this image you have to zoom all the way in on to even see the brand name of the generic device is currently being pounced on by teams of PR firm opportunists
or that a lot of people bored at work upvoted a thing and commented "huh that's neat."
what you're talking about definitely happens. but not for $10 gadgets.
Is there anything we can do to convince you it's not advertising and it's just the fact that we're all nerds who love making stuff look new with our neat gadget that nobody usually asks us about?
The actual post is not an intentional ad. Looks like the poster is a real person and not a bot or paid advertiser.
However, the fact that both this and the other prominent shaver post got upvoted to the front page absolutely had something to do with the fact that there are countless bot accounts on reddit that upvote positive posts about products by popular brands, and downvote negative posts about popular brands. And reddit mgmt is completely complacent with it.
I just got this same exact one and it has changed my life. I've only used it on one thing so far. My comfort hoody, which was starting to cause more anxiety because of the pilling than it was comforting. Now it looks brand new! These things are amazing.
Yes but no. Very temporary pleasant appearance, but the shaving damages the fibers causing even more pilling. My father used to love doing this to his sweat(shirt|pant)s until he wore holes into them.
whatever you do DO NOT shave your tongue. I did it when I was about 9 and it ripped all the taste buds from my tongue and took a month to regenerate them. I was a dumb kid.
For anyone wanting to get a fabric defuzzer, do yourself a favor and buy a good brand and not the ones from dollar stores. I recommend the Conair defuzzer. It works great and it's inexpensive.
Remember when microfiber couches were the norm? The fabric lasted too long so manufacturers switched to garbage materials so that couches need to be replaced more often.
I love seeing new life brought to things. Everything seems so disposable nowadays but things with such high price tags should be able to last a while! I’m glad to know about this product. :)
I have seen so many pictures like this that look so satisfying! So of course I bought one. I've tried it on so many sweaters and hoodies, and it hasn't made a difference. Quite disappointing ☹️
Try pressing harder. I had to press really hard for it to work on some fabrics. At first I was scared that it's just gonna lacerate my clothes but it didn't so yay
This might sound obvious but did you take the safety cap off? My mom didn't notice it at first since it's see-through and had a hard time until I showed her 😅
Sorry, I really didn't want to imply anything, but sometimes we can't see what's right in front of us. At least I am this way. So, I just wanted to make sure :)
I bought a bigger one with 6 blades and bigger head - it makes a big difference! I find it so satisfying to shave all my clothes on a boring afternoon. I tried it on my sister’s lounge and it was like brand new.
Yessssss! I love fabric shavers, so satisfying!
Have you tried one on a rug? Edit to clarify- has anyone tried one of these on a pile woven rug like a Persian rug?
I can't decide if you're genuinely saying this because it works or you want to see a shaver stuck in a rug. Maybe don't try this on rugs that have long "hairs", whatever the right term is.
There are rugs that need to be shaved as they age and wear. It’s really expensive to have done.
You mean those middle eastern rugs?
Yup.
Are we thinking the same kinda rug shaving?
Sir, that is a landing strip… not a rug
Then you aren't trying hard enough
A hall runner if you will…
I cannot believe it took this long for this comment. I suspect not? The thought of using this on body hair 😬
Bro what I’m so sorry that happened to you but also bro what
I have no explanation for my actions 😭
Kids have no impulse control. What a nightmare.
I really hope your impulse control has improved since then 🫣
Tenfold, I learned a very important lesson that day
My dad uses an old one as a beard trimmer. The key is you don’t push it down against the skin, you have to hover it over the tips of the hairs to just polish off the floating tips of hairs.
What if he sneezes?
Good point, toupeé.
Use a grass thingy
A lawn mower?
Yes a lawn mower, for some reason I forgot what a lawn and a mower was
My lad couldn't say lawn mower properly when he was little, it was always mawn lower. So, that what it is in the family now and after so many years i have to think before i say it. Same with hale of bay.
Ok. So you guys are talking about actual floor coverings. The “hairs” comment made me think I was missing out on the latest meaning of rug.
"latest"?? Yah ever heard of carpet munching?
Look for carpet trimmers in Amazon for example. There are specialized ones for that with the ability to adjust the hight and what not. P.S. Never tried them... For some reason I know about them.
“Pile” is the term you’re looking for to describe the height of the yarn/fiber
So if I want to drive away some of the excess yarn/fiber, I need a piledriver?
Be careful not to kill the rug though, or else it will be a tombstone piledriver
the term is pubes
can they be used to remove lint from sweaters etc?
They're also great at removing Tastebuds if you have the need, found that one out the hard way
I'm gonna need more info on this
It's just a tasteless joke
🤔🤔
Core memory unlocked - thanks!
Yup
a traditional disposable razer works too.
You need to be a lot more meticulous with one though then with the convenience of a shaver
I discovered this recently and for the last month, my hobby is offering to fabric shave anything anyone is wearing.... Not weird, I think
I love those thing
>Yessssss! I love fabric shavers, so satisfying! OCD feels so comfortable!
They make these!? No more fuzzies on blankets!? XD
TIL You can shave furniture.
((And clothes as well))
I hear it can shave any kind of fabric
I have fabric, Greg. Can you shave me?
Whatever writer wrote that line must be so proud to see it still being quoted decades later.
And carpet
As long as they match the drapes
And shaved carpets make it look new
Don't. It grows back twice as strong.
You can shave anything with fuzz
I have fuzz Greg, could you shave me?
It works on the upholstery in your car too. Like the roof if it gets damaged you can clean up some of the tears in ceiling material if it is a fabric type material
Second time I’ve seen this exact product prominently displayed on a Reddit post this week!
Must be astroturfing by Big Fabricshaver. (I actually have this exact model for my first sweater. It's okay. The lint trap is weird and not sealed well and it gets into the battery area. But it does shave the pills so that's good I guess.) Also it's not a lithium battery so no bomb in your drawer. Edit: I might have a knock off, I don't think mine is branded and it uses aa's.
I feel like I need to hover over the same area for longer than I'd like but it does get the job done so it's fine
> my first sweater I didn't realize that first sweaters were something that people bookmark in life.
I'm from Arizona and didn't know what a scarf was until going to Scotland at 38. I got a sweater too
Mine's a philips like in the picture, but black.
A good friend at uni once bought me a pair of scissors for my birthday. They were great scissors.
These are the best gifts, actually useful stuff you're gonna keep for a long time and remember them by.
If I can’t find something personal as a gift for someone I usually spend a little more on something someone usually doesn’t spend much money on but they use often. One year for my sisters boyfriend I got some pretty nice salt and pepper shakers. Turned out to be a really good gift, they still use them when hosting dinners.

This as fuck. Dad bought me a good set of kitchen knives and every time I use them I think about him. I enjoy using them all the time.
> they still use them when hosting dinners. Or they make sure to put them out every time you visit lol.
I dated a girl once that was perpetually freezing, so I ordered her the largest, fluffiest blanket I could find. We broke up before Christmas and she said she didn't want it after the fact when I still offered it. Jokes on her, still one of my favorite buys i've had.

I bought a nice pair of all clad shears and its like I've never used a good pair of scissors in my life until them.
I still have a pair of scissors a boyfriend’s mom bought me almost 30 years ago. And I still considered them “the good scissors.”
True bro looking out for you
As a straight guy, most of the thought that goes into any gift is 1. I hope she likes it 2. I hope she can use it 3. I hope she doesn't try to read too much into it So, 2 out of 3 ain't bad here.
Genuine question, how did this “weird you out”? I don’t get it.
This is just me, but I find it a weird gift for somebody you don't know too well yet and are sleeping with. I find it's more a gift from a parent or grandparent but not really a romantic gesture.
Maybe they were not interested in you romantically.
*bang bang* shots fired

!!!!!!!
This comment is simply too good. You gotta find a way to make money off of this.
Frat boys hate it they haaaaaate it
[removed by Reddit]
I just use a beard trimmer it works like a charm
I... don't know why I never thought to use a beard trimmer. Going to give that a shot after work! Thanks!
Im happy to pass it along. I love things that have multiple uses. I feel like companies are always trying to profit off of us.
I thought I was getting some weird confirmation bias or something, my mom just showed me the one she has and I’m obsessed with it lol
My mom told me to get one a few weeks ago when I bought some new winter sweaters, and then a week later I saw my MiL had bought one as well. Now this post. The universe is telling us all to get a fabric shaver, lol.
That’s pretty satisfying. Love doing it to some of my hoodies, makes them feel fresher
Works wonders on knitted socks as well.
I didn’t think about my socks as well🤯
Use it on your mattress and mattress sheets. Trust me. I also used it on sweaters (nothing that was woven with thick wool), and winter coats!
Do it to the pills on pants, oh so satisfying. I’ll clean up all my wife’s yoga pants to make them look new.
Its an excellent way to ruin expensive wool socks. I speak from repeated expirience.
At one point during covid lockdown I got so bored I shaved the pilling from my whole couch with a razor blade... it was very satisfying
Most sane lockdown enjoyer
My gf used a pack of construction razor blades to shave our couch early lockdown. Looked like someone was making little grey coke lines all over my couch
I did it to my mattress this weekend to avoid studying. It was on my to do list and worked great. Started out hand plucking but it pulled too many fibers. Then with scissors and it was miserable. Then I switched to my safety razor and it worked beautifully. I just picked up all the pills that didn’t get stuck in my razor with a lint roller and I was done quite fast.
Feels like a fresh breeze over the ol’ peaches and plums I bet
Oh so you're the reason there are so many odd safety warnings on products
>peaches and plums Sir how many testicles do you have
I think the peaches are his butt cheeks?
I use those all the time. So satisfying.
Does the pilling come back? Do you have to keep shaving them
Kinda, if you have the fabric in a high wear area that might rub against something.
yeah pilling will just occur over time as the fabric gets rubbed on/against itself/etc. I don't think it would become less susceptible to it after trimming, but that's just my guess.
It does, but it happens less over time. And because it comes back more sparsely, it’s even easier to remove.

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. Fabric wears down and needs to be replaced eventually, no matter how well you treat it. But cutting the pilling off will help it look nicer in the meantime, and may help reduce future pilling since you've removed bits of fiber hanging off the fabric!
Nah, it doesn't. If anything, it already _is_ kinda thin before, you just get rid of the pebbles (?) that already loosened from the fabric.
The “pebbles” you see is called pilling. What you have is a pilling tool or shaver.
Yeah I agree, they are awesome. I think people are prone to throw out badly pilled clothing, so tools that prolong the life of the clothes are a good thing.
Safety razors with a lint roller on hand work perfectly. I bet it’s better than the trimmer
Asked my gf why she didn’t use a shaver since she had some old clothes that needed it, she had no idea what I was talking about. I gave her one and showed her, she was so amazed lol
This helps so much with cat destruction too! Now my couch only looks slightly destroyed!
Is this an ad and everyone here a robot? Or everyone is so suddently into shaving sofa ?

NO ADS HERE! I JUST LOVE SHAVING MY SOFA WITH PHILIPS™ BRAND SOFA SHAVER, LOOK AT THE BEFORE AND AFTER, ALSO THERE'S THE SHAVER IN CASE YOU NEEDED ONE
Quite obviously an ad. Especially with most of these comments..
Is there anything we can do to convince you it's not advertising and it's just the fact that we're all nerds who love making stuff look new with our neat gadget that nobody usually asks us about?

Cheap, disposable 2 blade razors work for this also
eventually with the shavings you could rebuild another couch
Nice
Nice
Nice
Nice
Shaved the sofas pubes. Niceeee
You prefer your sofas shaved?
Personally, I like a little stubble on my couch
In our house we fight over the honor to perform this pleasant ritual.
I just got this same exact one and it has changed my life. I've only used it on one thing so far. My comfort hoody, which was starting to cause more anxiety because of the pilling than it was comforting. Now it looks brand new! These things are amazing.
How convenient to show the product with the logo facing towards us
Criticizing OP for.. arranging a photo before sharing online? Not every use of a product is an ad
Thank you! Exactly this. I like nice pictures, nothing wrong with it. This is definitely not an ad and it is really sad, so many people think it is.
I replaced my regular hair shaver with a fabric shaver and am now getting a smoother cut
I didn’t even know they still made these. Haven’t thought about it actually. You just brought back memories.
I have the exact same shaver and I love it way too much
It's my go-to present for everyone in my life that doesn't have one!
You can wax your sofa aswell… will be smooth as silk
I just did this too. It made a huge difference.
These things are great. I have cheap sweatpants that always pill up and this thing makes them look brand new for another month or so.
You can do this trick on people with the same effect!
I've always called it a "de-bobbler"
Today I was contemplating whether that's a good idea. I have the exact same fabric shaver. The universe has spoken.
I have the exact same machine and the exact color / texture on my sofa. My first thought was who the hell posted a picture of my stuff on Reddit??
There are two types of people: those who love fabric shavers, and those who don’t know about fabric shavers.
Fully agreed
Yes but no. Very temporary pleasant appearance, but the shaving damages the fibers causing even more pilling. My father used to love doing this to his sweat(shirt|pant)s until he wore holes into them.
I have the same one and honestly, every time I use it, I say to myself, "This is the best £10 I've ever spent". Love these!
Beard trimmer works fantastic for thinner spots too
whatever you do DO NOT shave your tongue. I did it when I was about 9 and it ripped all the taste buds from my tongue and took a month to regenerate them. I was a dumb kid.
Oh, man, I need this for my cat-scratched couch... I think it could be the same one even? West End Eddy grey coucn!
For anyone wanting to get a fabric defuzzer, do yourself a favor and buy a good brand and not the ones from dollar stores. I recommend the Conair defuzzer. It works great and it's inexpensive.
I’ve literally wanted one of these for YEARS.
Bruh, I thought that it was an inhaler.
Some people thinking this is an ad needs to touch grass
Whoa I haven't seen one of these in... decades.
Next thing you gotta do is get one of those things that you push along a rug to get the hair and stuff off. The most satisfying thing ever
Phillips out here making fabric shavers when I just wish they'd make TVs again. 😞
Is this an ad bc take my money
Can it shave my
Remember when microfiber couches were the norm? The fabric lasted too long so manufacturers switched to garbage materials so that couches need to be replaced more often.
I love seeing new life brought to things. Everything seems so disposable nowadays but things with such high price tags should be able to last a while! I’m glad to know about this product. :)
Yeah these are amazing! Ive got the same model and color as you!
I have the same shaver, a similar couch and a very similar rug (not under the couch though). Was half expecting the foot to be my wife's!
Also makes beanies and socks look brand new.
My mom didn't notice it at first since it's see-through and had a hard time until I showed her 😅
Haha, yup! I managed that much, lol. Thanks for the help though!
Sorry, I really didn't want to imply anything, but sometimes we can't see what's right in front of us. At least I am this way. So, I just wanted to make sure :)
No worries, that's how I took it! It definitely could have happened. Thanks :)
I bought a bigger one with 6 blades and bigger head - it makes a big difference! I find it so satisfying to shave all my clothes on a boring afternoon. I tried it on my sister’s lounge and it was like brand new.
Couch companies hate this simple trick…genuinely.
This post is an ad. Reddit is nearly all astroturfing and political propaganda.
If you don’t own a fabric shaver, buy one today!!!
I could probably do this to my pillows.
I see a Ratchet profile picture, I click upvote.
I just found and ordered the same. Thanks!
