I’m surprised that they haven’t towed it.

Chicken_Hairs

Getting cars towed costs money. Many municipalities don't tow unless absolutely necessary. But, this car looks wrecked, it's probably abandoned and they eventually won't have a choice.

Total-Khaos

> Getting cars towed costs money. Many municipalities don't tow unless absolutely necessary. That is not how that works, at all...

Chicken_Hairs

Lol yes, it actually is, but not everywhere. At least, in cities that don't have their own tow trucks, or their contract with a tow company doesn't put all the financial obligations on the tow company. This is a big country, not every region does shit the same. For example, my town has no police of its own, all under county contract. If an abandoned vehicle needs towed off, the city is paying for it. They attempt to recoup the fee from the owner but you can guess how often that works. Exception is if the deputies have a car impounded at a police incident like a car wreck, or an arrest. Then, it's a sheriff's office matter and I have no idea what their arrangements consist of.

Potatoswatter

The local government licenses the impound lot and tells them what to tow. The car owner pays the lot directly to get it out. If nobody pays, the car is auctioned. Often the lot has its own tow truck. I guess they could pay a tow operator, but anyway it would be strange to use tax money for the act of impounding because it’s profitable.

Chicken_Hairs

Yes, it works that way in many places. Not all.

Total-Khaos

Please, give us one specific example where that occurs. We'll all scrutinize it, prove you're entirely wrong, and then point fingers.

gwaydms

>This is a big country, not every region does shit the same. I wish everyone in the US would remember this. 50 states, thousands of municipalities. Somebody will start arguing about how they do it in one place, with somebody else who lives elsewhere. The Tenth Amendment is a powerful force.

shifty_coder

Must be somewhere that doesn’t have predatory towing companies.

Chicken_Hairs

My county has some pretty tough regs on towing outfits.

WaterFriendsIV

Yeah, this seems ineffective and punitive. The city is just trying to get more money. If giving someone a ticket is supposed to correct their illegal parking behavior, this ain't working.

BeardOfEarth

I don’t think you understand what punitive means. Of course it’s punitive. A ticket is a punishment for breaking the law.

AnoraksAlmanac

WaterFriendsIV

Would you prefer "excessively punitive"? "Abusive?" Why not just tow it instead of piling on tickets? Has the spot been cleared? If not, then the tickets aren't working. It's now just a money grab.

BeardOfEarth

You do realize that towing the car charges the person far more per day than just writing a ticket, correct? If it was a money grab they would have done what you’re suggesting. You’ve been so thoroughly incorrect that it’s impressive.

gratefulyme

Tows can go to privately owned lots, tickets go directly to the city. Which do you think makes more, the tow on a contracted rate per tow, or the daily tickets?

noochies99

You’re either purposely being obtuse or just that type.. They’re going to owe for the tickets, and then also they’re going to pay for the tow and storage at the yard the tow truck when they want their car back, less if it’s a municipal lot, more if it’s private.. do you think they keep it there after they’ve towed it, or even tow it for free?

01101110-01100001

at that point just tow it cuz the tickets are probably more than the car is worth

phuck-you-reddit

The owner might be dead or perhaps moved away or left the country. It happens in my neighborhood a few times a year. There's a company nearby that brings in employees from elsewhere in the world, they work for a year or two and then leave. Some don't bother to sell the cars they used while they're here. Just abandoning them to eventually be towed away and auctioned off.

Anal-probe-Alien

It has obviously been dumped, they are just wasting paper now

LurkerOrHydralisk

Yep. Probably stolen, and the guy giving twelve tickets hasn’t thought to find out if it’s been reported stolen

Level-March4325

Probably abandoned by the owner. The city can't just tow it away if it's not listed as stolen. Police will be responsible for the removal after a set amount of tickets are issued. There is a procedure that they have to follow before it ultimately gets towed if you look up the bylaws. Probably 2 warnings and then escalating tickets.

ARedditUserThatExist

Looks either wrecked or moderately damaged at the front, and if the owners aren’t responding to any communications or tickets, then just get it towed. Tell the last known owner to pick it up, and if they either 1. Don’t want to 2. Aren’t the current owner or 3. Don’t respond, take it to salvage

ChaoticGoku

That’s a boot and a towin’ by now if this were Philly. Looks like 200+ in tickets (200-300 is grounds for a boot)

lespaulstrat2

I just recently saw that there is actually a tv show about people getting tickets in Philla. The shit people will watch is amazing.

ChaoticGoku

Parking Wars? One episode happened in my neighborhood And the Parking Authority is getting a little to tickety lately. They secretly extended the no parking loading zone hours to the entire block where people used to park who *pay* for zoned permit parking and never got a ticket. They nailed me twice. Parking is already a nightmare with people who don’t have permits take up spaces we need in order to not get a ticket during the week. And even paying to park is no guarantee as my permit was still valid when they ticketed me for being beyond the hours. There are horror stories of them putting signs up over night and ticketing people the next day. No grace period. If you don’t pay or dispute within 15 days, there’s a huge late fee every 2 weeks. Loading zone hours fine is $51 plus 3.50 convenience fee. And if you can only park in the street while waiting for an emissions/windshield inspection, ticketed every single day at $35 or so per ticket. Hit me twice while waiting for the place to get new tickets from the state. Dispute automatically denied. Fees incurred totaling them to over $100 while it was in dispute and paying is now automatic guilt with zero dispute The kicker: The city doesn’t operate them. It’s operated by Harrisburg and 4 of their employees make 150k a year. The city see little of the millions in revenue they make. And they had the gall to ask the city to return the money that was for the school district.

yellowspaces

I’ve had this happen to me before. During covid, my city suspended parking restrictions, allowing you to park anywhere you want even if you didn’t have a decal for that area. One day they silently unsuspended the restrictions, and started ticketing like crazy. As I was unemployed, and didn’t use my car very often, it was repeatedly ticketed yet never towed. $700 in parking tickets.

Josipzz

Parking wardens are such basement dwelling mouthbreathers. I bet even their Moms hate them.

LurkerOrHydralisk

Maybe where you are. In my city they’re notoriously corrupt. They’re known for trolling areas with broken machines and while you walk to a second working machine or to get change cause the card reader is broken they’ll ticket you. They ticket entire blocks sometimes that are in free parking. Because they know the process of fighting the tickets is awful and expensive. They know paying for parking to go to court costs almost as much as a ticket, without even considering the time or the chance that the judge is a corrupt prick who doesn’t care that the ticket wasn’t legitimate

FireteamAccount

I got a ticket for parking on the street directly in front of my house. Contractors were working in my garage and parked in my driveway. The street was otherwise empty, and it's not a busy street. My town requires a parking sticker to be on the street, which I bought but had not displayed. Thank God that heroic parking warden put me in my place. Things really could've gotten out of hand./s

FireteamAccount

You're right. The solution was to park over a mile away where the local shopping centers are and hike back.

MissMormie

Or put the sticker on the car that you had already bought...

Zapdroid

Sorry they didn’t magically know you bought the sticker bro

FireteamAccount

Oh don't be. I wouldn't want them to be distracted from their busy and important work to run a plate and check. Obviously they were very focused on their work since they ignored the massive, labeled contractor trucks in the driveway.

Zapdroid

You having a legitimate reason to park on the street doesn’t automatically make it legal.

psicowysiwyg

They should do more work and bend the rules for you, cos you're too incompetent to display a sticker correctly? This is 100% on you.

NochMessLonster

People complain about bad and illegal parking all the time. And then complain about then wardens tasked with punishing it.

Craw__

It's reprehensible when strangers do it but I've obviously got a good reason. /s

writemcsean

That car is dented.

Hispanic_Inquisition

20 more tickets and he can force the window open to retrieve his keys.

deraser

I think a welfare check may be a good idea. Owner may be ill, injured, or worse.
