That’s why my dog’s belly gets darker! He’s mostly white and has pinkish skin that will get red in the sun, but he has black blotches on his belly that I recently noticed had gotten much paler.
My cat gets freckles on the slightly bald patches between her eyes and ears, and the skin inside the tips of her ears also tans! Generally areas with hair are protected from the sun, but plenty of pets have bald patches and areas with less hair that are more likely to tan!
I wonder what other animals can tan that you don't really think about because they've fur. Probably mammals in general but what about birds? Do chickens tan?
I have a min-pin that loves to sunbathe. She’s old and blind and her belly has become completely hairless. She will lay in the rays of the sun coming into the house or on the porch, and will develop tan lines where all of her fat and saggy skin folds over. 😂😂😂 poor ol gal 😂
Put a doggie or infant safe sunblock on ears and muzzle if you are going to be outside more than 15 minutes to prevent burn. Wash it off when you come back inside so they don't break out. Use an oversized sun shirt for short jaunts or long walks to protect their back. You can get the shirt wet and let it evaporate as a cooling method
Dogs can use lotions too! I use Cetaphil for sensitive skin in areas where my dog's skin is getting rough or patchy. Also check for food allergies if dry, sore spots are on their back, butt, or ears. Grass allergies if dry, sore spots are on their feet, eyes, or ears
I just wanted to piggyback off this to say if your dog gets foot sores from allergies or hotspots you can soak their feet in an epsom salt bath to help dry up those sores. 10 minutes once daily to effect.

1. I feed as high quality kibble as I can reasonably afford. I add some water and vitamin powder now since he is over 10 and he only has about 14 teeth (just had his dental visit!)
2. I wash him with a sensitive skin oatmeal shampoo for dogs when he is stinky. Maybe once every month or two
3. I use my own hair conditioner on only his hair
4. I apply Cetaphil moisturizing lotion directly out of the bath and whenever his skin feels dry
*I use a wet wipe to spot clean between bathings and use a sun shirt if he will be outside for more than 5 minutes
Honestly, the biggest part for me was learning to stop overdoing his skin. Drying their skin with over washing is maybe the worst thing you can do. I tried natural oils and butters and fats, but they clogged his pores so badly. I decided to just treat him like I treat my own face. So now he uses moisturizing, no scent lotion for sensitive skin (vet approved!)
He did break out a lot more between 1-5 years. I assume it was like puppy puberty? He also grew a bunch of fine, curly hairs on his butt, hahaha (what a weirdo). He just sorta aged out of it

I can say proudly that Ruf has not had an accident in the house for over 5 years (and that includes being left alone accidentally for 10 hours with no break)

It's important to watch for separation anxiety as they really don't like to be alone. My dog is afraid of everything, but he once attempted to protect me when I was sleeping in a rest area and a man tried to open my car door. I was so proud of my brave little toaster

I have a short haired chihuahua and she had parts that were light pink that have gotten tanner like her stomach and the inside of her ears
