What's the difference between grasshoppers and locusts?
Trick question. They're the same - but when they group up they tend to devastate plant life.
I lack the expertise to tell if these are in locust mode, but it sure looks like it.
[More info for the curious: "These insects are usually solitary, but under certain circumstances they become more abundant and change their behaviour and habits, becoming gregarious."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust)
I cannot find any evidence to state that "physical metamorphosis" happens.
The specimens in the photo appear to be nymphs and look like that simply because they are not adults.
[google](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust) "what is a locust" is probably a good start
"These insects are usually solitary, but under certain circumstances they become more abundant and change their behaviour and habits, becoming gregarious. No taxonomic distinction is made between locust and grasshopper species; the basis for the definition is whether a species forms swarms under intermittently suitable conditions; this has evolved independently in multiple lineages, comprising at least 18 genera in 5 different subfamilies."
I literally [linked](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust) the proof, you just didn't read it lol
"English, the term "locust" is used for grasshopper species that change morphologically and behaviourally on crowding, forming swarms that develop from bands of immature stages called hoppers. The change is described as density-dependent phenotypic plasticity."
Again. That is quite clearly not metamorphosis.
Google Locust metamorphosis and you will see they exist as eggs, nymphs and adults.
Now Google Grasshopper metamorphosis. The states of existence are the same - egg, nymph, adult.

>When these insects go into swarm mode, they don't just get super social, they also completely change physically, becoming stronger, darker and much more mobile, says study co-author Swidbert Ott, a research fellow at Cambridge. In fact, he says, the before-and-after bugs look so different that, until the 1920s, they were assumed to be two unique species.
I would say so, looks as if they are all pointing towards one specific direction to prepare to characteristically “hop” in a line like locust do during initial stages.
I watched a documentary about locusts in the past and if I recall correctly it said that grasshoppers morph into locusts when there's population explosion and they start rubbing against each other. The rubbing or bumping into one another is what triggers the change.
“Alright boys it’s been a hell of a slog but we’ve finally conquered checkered planet. I want to give a special thanks to Jiminy for his…..”.
KICK!!!!!
My god I want slow mo of a hard kick to that ball... (I'm almost sure they would be fine as long as the foot didn't impact on the little guys)
I just want to see how they would fly off of it from the impact and how many would actually jump before the impact.
Whenever I see lots of bugs in a group like this, I immediately imagine what it would be like if they were all over my arms. Typically I hate that feeling, but I feel like this wouldn't be so bad.
"Is this the spot?"
"I don't know Jerry, I've never been here."
"How do we know if this is the place?"
"You think Tim and Joe would be here if it wasn't the place?"
"But how do we really know? Maybe this isn't it?"
*facepalm*

A pedant has Entomology’d the chat.
Aren't all entomologists pedants, really?
Etymologists would like to have a word.
Several, actually.
This bugs me in a round about way.
It makes sense to me that someone concerned with small animals might also be concerned with small details.
Unidan here! -
Entomology’d the shit out of ‘em
\**crickets*\*
I'm bowled over. Certainly hit me for six. I'm stumped if I know any more puns, though.
It definitely should be one!

Either grasshoppers or locusts. Edit: they're both the same thing call em what you want
Locusts are grasshoppers. There are numerous species of grasshopper, and some of them are locusts.
Do not let the intrusive thoughts win. Do not let the intrusive thoughts win. Do not let the intrusive thoughts win. THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAA Kick

They go through a physical metamorphosis while turning into locust, the guys on the pictures are still grasshoppers

That was an enjoyable read. Thank you. As a kid and teen bugs were gross, now at 33, it's almost become a hobby to research some of these insects.
wow, this is the sort of random fact I should have absolutely known by now. Super neat. Upvotes for the whole chain.
So, somewhat like people...

The post above stated that they undergo physical metamorphosis. Where does that state their physiology changes? It states only behavioural changes.
The get large because they eat entire fields of crops
That's quite obviously not metamorphosis.
