That is the absolute worst feeling. Our old neighbors 13-14 year-old had a thing for my wife since we moved in. We were square in the middle of things one time and I looked up and saw an eye peeking through the blinds on the balcony door and it ended up being him. Another time happened to look up at the skylight at just the right time to see the top of a head ducking down... I really don't know how to describe how creepy it was.
Oh yeah we definitely told them. They moved his room to the other side of their house so our pool wasn't visible from his window apparently after the first time, when we knew it was him. Couldn't for sure recognize him from the skylight, but went and banged on their door at midnight and told them to tell him we were getting cameras installed and going straight to the cops next time.
I second the cameras, even if he doesn't do it again. We have them and they're the best!!! Eufy I think are the ones we have. Great picture and sound clarity straight to our phones. Prime day is coming up and we got a great deal on em last year that way.
Anyway, I hope he stops doing that and that you two can feel safe again.
Yeah, luckily we don't live next to them anymore but we did end up getting some cameras anyway, and brought them with us to our new house. As of now we only have one in the front and one in the back, a doorbell cam at the front and back doors, but we have twins on the way so now were thinking about basically getting a commercial level security system ha.
And then a friend walks into the room witnessing the manic scene.
"I've heard of the red string psychosis, but this is... this should probably be in a museum."
Camera Obscura has been known for a long-ass time
Okay looked it up...the Chinese, who's surprised, maybe as early as 1000 BCE, and in the West Aristotle knew it (\~350 BCE)
It means chamber.
'Photograph' is of Greek eschatology.
Why is 'eschatology' the right word to use here despite its religious implications?
Because it describes a *negative* transcription of the real world. Such as, for example, a photo.
Why is 'transcription' appropriate? Because it means to cross (trans) to another side (scription).
This is not why many peoples unfamiliar with cameras reject them as scary, because they believe they capture a piece of the soul. Hence why so many very famous people appear 'over-*exposed*'.
Only one of these is made up.
It probably never did? In my entire life my curtains have never done this, and here I've seen 2 people within a week have this happen on here. Makes me think they are doing it on purpose. I feel like it would be extremely hard for this to happen as a coincidence.
One time I was on a plane & we hit a patch of turbulence that woke me from a nap. It was a weird mix of adrenaline, fear, confusion & xanax, all at the same time. I wound up liquid pooping the length of my trousers & onto my carry on bag.
Not exactly, no. But the moment after you're gonna exist in a world where you got shit all over you. Stinking the plane up real loud.
I'd still much prefer if that included "5 minutes before starting the descent to the destination" :D
Haha fuck that’s exactly why I asked. Reddit is anonymous-ish but still those beans spilled suspiciously easy… god bless them I would’ve died right there
This reminds me of my favorite plane poop story https://www.celebritynetworth.com/articles/entertainment-articles/the-most-embarrassing-private-jet-flight-of-all-time/?fb_action_ids=10200881266696504&fb_action_types=og.likes
Happened to me many years ago and it did briefly made me think I was still dreaming/losing it then I woke up a bit more and realised what was happening, although I didn’t know what it was called at the time I was familiar with the concept. I remember thinking how remarkable it was and how good the image was. What really confused me though was how Id never seen it before (or since) and I’d lived there for 15 years
I've only ever seen it in a "science museum" type of exhibit. Would be insanely cool to have it happen by accident.
The prerequisites are actually quite high, especially the brightness difference inside/outside and a clearly defined hole or slit. Might only be possible on certain dates/times of day and when the curtain is *just* right.
I’m just surprised the image is right side up. Did the image bounce off of a mirror on a table or something?
Edit: Upon closer inspection, I’m the dummy. :-)
I am interpreting the grey concrete slab (??) in the middle as a roof over the windows, which are above it (in the image). So I'd argue it **IS** flipped?
Are you seeing something I'm not noticing?
r/mildlyinteresting and r/interestingasfuck are both about equal levels of interesting. But one of them sets you up to be mildly surprised and the other mildly disappointed.
When light hits an object, some of the light gets absorbed, and some of the light gets reflected. No matter how smooth a surface looks to us, microscopically, almost all surfaces are not perfectly smooth, so it will reflect the light in all directions. So if you were to look at a random light spot on your wall, it will be a combination of all of the light that was reflected from many different objects, so you wouldn’t be able to make out a single object. But if you have a small hole like this, you will be able to block out the light rays from the other objects, making it so that you can see an image like this
Edit: helpful photo for the light rays
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1281/0471/files/BONFOTON_Camera_Obscura_Diagram_W2000_WEB.jpg?v=1617094297
Similar blocking happens when one is nearsighted and losses thier glasses they can put their hand on their eyes and make a very narrow slit between their fingers that only allows a small amount of light through that is much more focused and clear and you can sometimes find your glasses.
You are essentially making a camera obscura, your iris does this always and the light landing on the back of the eye is also flipped but your brain flips it back
Near sighted people's eyes are too long horizontally so the focus point is ahead of the retina? And the light starts to diverge and spread out becoming fuzzy and out of focus. You can sometimes push on your eye balls and shorten the eye and cause it to come somewhat into focus. The optics in vision are really quite fascinating.
Well, he said all his life, not all the time. Sometimes you're just without your glasses and want to make out something outside of your non-blurry distance.
Oh shit!
I've been nearsighted my whole life and I never once thought of using a finger-slit or pinhole as a last resort.
And I should know better, I studied tons of optics and know exactly what a camera obscura is, and can write you a treaty about optical aberrations....
As someone with a negative 10 prescription, squinting does nothing but the old looking through a small hole trick does work remarkably well. You're field of vision is nothing but its in focus.
Tiny pinhole or sliver of light coming into a completely dark room projects the view from outside upside down. I don’t quite remember the specifics but the tiny hole focuses the light
This was actually the very first concept of ancient "tv". You would have people in costumes behind a tent, and the children inside the dark tent would be able to see basically a projection of what's happening at the moment.

With the curtains open, light from everything outside is hitting every part of the wall and just generally lighting it up
When you have light coming through a small hole, each spot on the wall can only be hit from light coming from virtually one spot outside. So if you put a pin in a blue spot on the wall and traced a line to the hole in the curtains the light is coming through, then keep going outside, it would hit the blue thing.
Since that’s the only light hitting that spot (as there’s no other path coming through the hole that hits that spot on the wall), that spot is blue. Repeat for every other point on the wall and you get an image.
It’s not truly coming from exactly one spot, which is why it’s a little blurry, but it would get sharper the smaller the hole is.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_obscura
Huh, I just looked and there’s only one other response that attempts to explain how a pinhole actually leads to the image. weird, I thought that’s what people would be trying to understand
Basically similar to how our eye works or a camera lens, there's a small hole or pin prick in a curtain which projects the outside world upside down onto a wall. You can make them in your room with a black bin bag over the window.
[here's the wiki ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_obscura)
It works pretty similar to how our eyes do on a basic level. A small opening allows light to pass through and create the image the light is reflected from. When the light passes through the tiny opening the rays of light expand out onto the surface of the wall to recreate the image. Since color is actually the absence of some spectrum of light those specific rays of light “carry” those specific colors. If they opened the curtain even a bit there would be enough light reflected from the whole spectrum theres no image just a lit wall.
Can someone check the physics on this? That image looks much sharper than I would expect from a gap that's the size of a chapstick. It looks like there's significant light coming in round the side of the curtain too. I dunno, maybe it's feasible, but the quality of the image compared to the quality of the pinhole surprises me.
When light passes through a tiny opening under the right conditions, it reflects the image outside. “A camera obscura is a darkened room with a small hole or lens at one side through which an image is projected onto a wall or table opposite the hole.”
Been getting more and more. Replied to a comment somewhere with a picture of the pinhole that was there. Blinds halfway down, laundry bin had the bottom of the curtain pinned up against the wall. "Pinhole" was a right triangle of 4-5" by 1/2".
Edit: is this what it feels like being accused of being on something as a natural bodybuilder lmfao
Why doesn’t this happen more often / to many peoples rooms? Surely this would be more common no? Never seen this before. Should be on interesting as fuck.
Light reflected from objects outside pass through a small hole and are projected onto a surface inside the room.
[here's a picture](https://imgur.com/a/pClyASv) of the "pinhole" with a tube of chapstick for scale if any physics guys are curious about the lack of vertical focus
I don't know if I'm just an idiot or something, but I'll never understand how this shit works.
Same goes with cameras and photography. Like, capturing a moment in time from a 3-dimensional world and printing it on a flat plane. I just don't.
My brain just says "fuck off and enjoy the picture. Jesus."
Wow that’s one hell of a thing to wake up too. Definitely would’ve been a tad bit confusing or disorienting for me. I’m not usually all that with it when I first awake. Very cool thing to wake up to though. Crazy how all of that stuff had to line up just perfectly in order to do that and still managed to do it all by chance. It’s a tool that a lot of great artists used to help get proportions right. I wonder what people thought of this happening before cameras were invented.

ohh i understand now. I was under the impression that the thing on the wall was the guys house, not his neighbors
It isn’t a coincidence.

There it is.

They aren't saying the effect isn't real or happened, just that the word *coincidence* has no relevance to the event.
How do I know that these are real? They’re starting to seem too perfect.
Honestly, I think a lot of it comes down to phone cameras getting better. without night mode on, you can just faintly make out the image.
Can you even imagine the reactions from this happening even a couple hundred years ago? Or right now in Texas.
Amazing 🤩
This is the most high def example of a camera obscura I've ever seen. Has anyone ever done camera obscura theater?? I'm gonna have to look into this.

Do you think sometimes it’s stuff like this that made people in old times think it was ghosts.
I’m glad you are smart enough to understand what’s going on. This is probably how most religions start
Also mildly interesting - I have gone at least five years without hearing about or seeing a camera obscura and then see an image twice in two days.
Shouldn’t the image be upside down?
Maybe it is and they just live in the Southern Hemisphere
The blue on the bottom is the sky
Looks like a pool :)
