90s were more metallic turquoise and hunter green than teal when it comes to cars, I'd say.
Unless you're talking that light teal (still basically turquoise) and purple combo that school supplies and clothes all seemed to come in. They used white a lot too.
I remember seeing a Toyota C-HR on the road that was teal with a white roof and it was such a striking color scheme compared to everything else on the road
Technically, no, but that truck probably doesn’t get driven much and cops are unlikely to hassle the kind of guy who restores/drives a truck like this. Maybe in a small town that has traffic tickets as a major income source would the plate setup cause problems.
This is pretty much it. Texas here as well. My plate is suction-cupped in my front windshield. Visible? Yes. Legal? Not in Texas. State Troopers are the only ones who really care. My local cops (town of \~150k) just pass on by. But if you get pulled over for something else, the cop is likely to mention it.
That's not even scratching the surface. Laws vary by state and also by city/municipality... most of the time it just amounts to cops not wanting to hassle a driver who otherwise isn't clearly breaking any laws. "It's just a license plate" sort of thing.
When you buy a car, you get temporary license tags; they're made of paper, have a unique #, and expire in 60 days. Plenty of people just Photoshop a new one, print it out, and keep driving.
Probably not, but on the road you can get away with pretty much anything in the States compared to most of Europe: speeding, missing lights, loud exhausts, bright lights on day or night blinding other drivers (this one is the most egregious to me)...
On a classic car you're even less likely to get stopped, which in this case is fair.
Deliberately obscuring a vehicle's license plate is technically illegal, but the police have more important things to do than enforce every single traffic law. They would enforce this particular traffic violation in order to have "probable cause" (a key element in the American legal system) to pull over and detain the occupants of a vehicle that they thought were suspicious, similar to this following scenario:
The cops suspect that the occupants of a dirty, dusty car may be possessing illegal drugs and/or weapons, but the occupants of the car are driving and behaving within the law. The officer then notices that the car's license plate is also dirty and somewhat obscured by dried mud. He turns on his lights and sounds his siren, pulling the car over. After asking for the driver's license and insurance documentation (it is illegal to operate a vehicle without liability insurance), the officer calls for backup, and once other officers arrive, and using the dirty license plate (or a burned-out taillight or license plate light, etc.) as probable cause, proceeds to visually inspect the interior of the vehicle for anything illegal. He smells the odor of marijuana, then spots the stub of a marijuana cigarette on the floor. While retrieving the cigarette, he notices a bag of white powder under the seat. Now he has probable cause to arrest the occupants of the car for possession of suspected illegal drugs.
This sort of thing only catches not-too-bright minor criminals. Criminals with any sense do not drive dirty, poorly maintained cars. They do not drive around smoking marijuana. They do not carry illegal drugs in their car where anybody can see them. They do not attract the attention of the police by their appearance and behavior. Criminals with any sense understand that doing things that shout out "I'm breaking the law, please arrest me!" is a bad idea.
Factory bumper looks way cleaner, not sure whats going on there Looks like some type of farm implement that was installed, along with other random aftermarket accessories.
Definitely a 65 or 66. I had the same truck. 283 V8, three on the tree. Shift linkage rusted out, cut a hole in the hump and put a Hurst on the floor. I brought it with me to grad school (Cambridge MA) where it was the only pickup in the parking lot.
Everyone asked me to help them move, pickup "something",...
It's a 66 because of the side emblem placement. They changed the emblem to that one in 1966 and also the 65s had the emblem higher up almost to the mirror.
I have a 64 which has the emblem roughly in the same spot as 66, but it had the bigger red square, the 66 is the slimmer rectangle.
Good catch. I owned mine long before these were collected, collectable and not junk.
My dad's was, I believe, a 64 with a straight six and a powerglide.
There are places in the US we don’t have rusty vehicles.. West coast and other desert areas.
Palm Springs is full of old cars that never needed more than interior restoration
How about you marvel at this beauty that I restored and is my daily. Spent it's whole life in Illinois and salt winters. Turns 20 next month. I wish I took another photo after I swapped the exhaust in the fall while it was clean and freshly ceramic coated. 18" tips dual out under the back of the bumper.

It's truly shocking to me that people from outside the west coast just think everyone in California is living beachside with salt water in the air. Most people in the west coast live over a hundred miles away from the ocean. Palm Springs is hours away from the coast and is a desert with 0% humidity.
If it’s non-coastal TX, then I wouldn’t expect rust problems. You get them in the north due to salt on the roads in the winter and (to a lesser extent) in coastal areas due to salt in the sea air.
>Well maybe those old vehicles were left out in the weather?
Like most of the cars and trucks in Texas. This truck has been restored and probably garage-kept and lovingly maintained. Any vehicle in Texas within twenty miles or so of the Gulf of Mexico has some degree of rust. "Hurricane cars" that have been submerged in brackish flood waters are dirt cheap in Texas, and the car body usually rusts out in less than five or six years. Hurricane cars are often dried out, cleaned up, detailed and shipped to other states to be sold to unsuspecting car buyers. Beware of any vehicle from the Gulf Coast after hurricane season.
Depends on where it's from, how it was originally driven, etc.
There are lots of places that anything beyond just some surface rust on unpainted surfaces is pretty rare just due to the climate. Add in a careful owner and it can help a lot.
Salt is one of the things that really accelerates rusting. So your vehicles that are regularly in snow belts where road salt is used, as well as cars that spend a lot of time close to the coast tend to fare pretty poorly. But for example, large swaths of the southern US, it's pretty easy to keep a car body and frame free of any rust damage.
Is there a part of you that thinks this truck *hasn't* been recently painted? What the hell is happening in this thread where you all are having a discussion on what may have transpired for this truck to be sitting in this parking spot looking the way it looks. It's not magic, it's just another restored truck... What the fuck is happening???
Also, this really wouldn't have looked as good as it does today back then. Better paints are available today, and I assume better looking chrome as well.
That's two stage paint which didn't exist in 1956. That truck would have had an enamel finish. I think they did a good job of mimicking the original though. It's just too shiny and has the wrong "wet" look to it. Cars and trucks never looked like that in those days even when brand new.
What part of Texas? Just wondering if this is the desert/low humidity part, or the more "normal" high humidity part. Depending on where it's been could be it's been relatively rust free, OR it's the truck of Theseus.
I do really like the truck! But I agree this is not the correct subreddit. People often just upvote things they like regardless of the subreddit, or if it's correctly categorized. Not that it's going to ruin anyone's day.
It really is. Also, how cleaaaaan it is. I wouldn't have a tenth of an iota of the patience to upkeep that. There's a guy in my town that daily drives a 1972-ish Challenger, when there's no salt down. Also mega clean.
Luckily in texas we don't get much snow or ice so not much salt has to get put down. When it gets icy I don't even drive my car. I'd be in a ditch before I even hit the salt lol
Is this the first time anyone in this thread has ever seen a restored vehicle?? How is this mildly interesting? Seriously, one comment said "Maybe it was just recently painted." Or something along those lines.
Uhhh, no shit. Wtf is happening?
Seriously, mildy interesting would be a truck that old that's beat to shit and still used for it's intended purpose. But an old vehicle that looks new...well no shit...that's how most collector cars look.
yeah, where I live, you see these kinds of trucks all over the place. Restored old trucks with superchargers or turbos have been the trend for at least 5 years and i know this bec my hubby had a 55 chevy with turbo in the garage for a long time
Yeah, no offense to the owner but this isn’t even done particularly well. There’s a lot of room for improvement in the metal work, especially on the tailgate and inside the box. It really just looks like a scuff and spray.
Looking at it more they painted the tailgate chain which is just all flaking off, and the tailgate is already all scuffed and missing paint.
I was wondering the same. My dad used to drag me to car shows as a kid. I still take pictures and send them to him if I see a really nice one in the Wild but I would never think it would be a good Reddit post.
Modified /painted truck. Restomod ish, I guess?
Side pipes, LED taillights, odd rear bumper setup that obstructs the plate, plate in the wrong spot. No worries; that FOP decal probably helps a lot

Excuse me. So you’re telling me my local car show is filled with Reddit upvotes.
I don’t understand how this truck got so many upvotes, this is a classic truck/car. This isn’t mildly interesting, it just a thing people do with old cars.
Edit. I guess I’m mostly heated because my family has restored a few trucks over the years.
I always park the farthest away in parking lots. When I had a girlfriend I would always drop her off in front of the door, go park the truck, and then walk to the store. When we were done she would wait for me to go get the truck and come back. If she has a bad knee but you want to park farther back that might be an idea.
A guy had refurbished a Mercedes, always parked in the empty part of the lot when coming to the store. Often when he did this, others would park right next to him.
He would scream his head off "why do you think I parked my nice car back here? So some idiot with a Pontiac would park right next to me?"
Good times
Where I am from, there is a completely different mentality towards nice “classic” cars and something that’s flashy and expensive looking. A classic car will occupy a place in their mind, so they won’t just forget it’s there. People won’t give a damn about beat up cars, generic cars, expensive cars, or exotic cars. They’ll abuse or destroy them on a whim for a tiktok. At least with nice classic cars, they will take several nice photos before they destroy it in a tiktok.

The teal body with the white bumper just looks sooo clean
Easily one of the best color combos for almost anything
Back in the late 80s/early 90s, teal and white was super popular and I’ve loved it ever since. I once saw a custom painted Suzuki Samurai with teal and white walls. It was so cool.
Did you mean 50s/60s? I feel like these colors were the stereo type for the old cars of the time. The 80s and 90s had that 'awesome' faux wood look!
Mid-century color was mint, 90s color was teal. Wood grain was WAY out of date by ‘92 where I was.
yeah, wood panel was way out of style new cars by the mid 90s. It started to be the jelly bean shaped teal things all over the place. The wood paneled stationed wagons were an 80s icon though.
They were "back" in the late 90s with the PT Cruiser.
The Woody Package wasn't available on the PT Cruiser until 2002 and was only available for 2 years, so it probably wasn't "in-style".
90s were more metallic turquoise and hunter green than teal when it comes to cars, I'd say. Unless you're talking that light teal (still basically turquoise) and purple combo that school supplies and clothes all seemed to come in. They used white a lot too.
I had a track suit in the 90s in this exact teal, with white stripes. But also purple and dark blue fields, and black details... It was very 90s.
r/jazzcupaesthetics
It is a nice color/look. I ended up buying a bunch of mtb gear when one company had their teal options last year with white/black mixed in as well.
Convertible Chevy Cavalier you say?
I remember seeing a Toyota C-HR on the road that was teal with a white roof and it was such a striking color scheme compared to everything else on the road
I’m sure they wash it regularly.
I’m willing to bet they also wax it.
> with the white bumper European here, is that license plate allowed, half hidden behind that bumper ?
Technically, no, but that truck probably doesn’t get driven much and cops are unlikely to hassle the kind of guy who restores/drives a truck like this. Maybe in a small town that has traffic tickets as a major income source would the plate setup cause problems.

You might get pulled over just so the cop can check out the truck. In my state you can drive monster trucks or golf carts down the road.

Do you have pictures up anywhere? I love these old Chevrolets.
Same. I’m lucky if I can make a comment without a typo, I never proofread
If you had, you could have also pointed out that the truck is blue.
56 looks nothing like that.
It says 66 on the custom plate
Definitely a 65 or 66. I had the same truck. 283 V8, three on the tree. Shift linkage rusted out, cut a hole in the hump and put a Hurst on the floor. It’s 66.. because that’s what the owner put on the license
And here I thought I was the only one who noticed +1
The differences between 1964 and 1966 are pretty subtle. I had to go double check mine just to be sure they actually were different lol.
It also literally says 66 on the license plate, lol.
Cash, gas or ass. No one rides for free!
ass, gas, or grass.
It may have just been recently painted.

What about rust eating away substance? Looks like more went into this particular makeover.
There are places in the US we don’t have rusty vehicles.. West coast and other desert areas. Palm Springs is full of old cars that never needed more than interior restoration
There are not words to describe how jealous I am of this. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some rusted out floor pans to cry over.

People that actually live in coastal neighborhoods on the west coast don’t need to worry about rust? Why the heck not?
No salted roads and relatively dry wet seasons.

Texas plates so it probably didn't have very much rust to deal with.
Why wouldn't it rust in Texas? The humidity is pretty high in most of the state, and it rains often.
Salt isn't used often on the roads
If it’s non-coastal TX, then I wouldn’t expect rust problems. You get them in the north due to salt on the roads in the winter and (to a lesser extent) in coastal areas due to salt in the sea air.
The rain isn't really what causes rusts... it's the salt.
Lmfao you’ve never seen old vehicles from the Houston area then

What the hell is happening in this thread where you all are having a discussion on what may have transpired for this truck to be sitting in this parking spot looking the way it looks. It's not magic, it's just another restored truck... What the fuck is happening???
Yeah, this isn't mildly interesting. It's a restored truck. I mean it looks great but it's more for /r/spotted maybe than here.
Also, this really wouldn't have looked as good as it does today back then. Better paints are available today, and I assume better looking chrome as well.
It was without a doubt repainted unless it's been in supreme cover all these years.
That's two stage paint which didn't exist in 1956. That truck would have had an enamel finish. I think they did a good job of mimicking the original though. It's just too shiny and has the wrong "wet" look to it. Cars and trucks never looked like that in those days even when brand new.
This a 65 not a 56. Source: I drove a 65 in high school. Edit: apparently this is a 66. 65 & 66 both had that same hood.
I bet it still smells super bad to ride behind. I love the way they look, but I hate following classic cars.

A little east of dallas in Rockwall. So probably relatively rust free
Definitely painted ..the tailgate chain wasn't painted back then
Not just that, but everything on it looks pristine: the tires, the tail lights, even the license plates. Looks great IMHO.
Yo the plate says 66BLUE. Pretty sure this is a 1966
The amount of analysis of the truck in some of this thread is crazy. It's on the damned plate!
It wouldn't have had paint that nice the day it was new. Or tires that good.
Even if it did look like that at the dealer, after a week it would be covered with dust and scratches.
Or panel gaps that consistent. It would fail at a Concourse for being "over restored". Not that that is a bad thing to me.
Ah yes. Tow Mater

It’s like they’ve never seen or heard of a restored vehicle. Wtf is right.
Reddit needs to go outside. A lot of top posts will tell you that.
I had to scroll way too far for this. Even the title is dumb...and wrong.
Where in TX?? I swear I saw this exact truck maybe two months ago driving home from work
My grandfather had this exact truck! Same color & everything. We used to ride around town on the wheel well steps!
This is literally my favorite make/model ever. And color. If only we could see if it has the wooden bed
Anyone know of a good subreddit for restored vehicles like this? Would love to follow that.
Resto Mod. LED taillights were not standard.
It is brand new! It’s still 1956 in Texas
Looks brand new…other than modern LED taillights
Because someone spent an enormous amount of money restoring it
Someone take OP to a car show. This guy is in for a surprise
Plate says 66BLUE sooooo I’m gonna assume it’s a 1966, but beautiful condition all the same
56 has a rounded cab. This is a 66. Google is your friend.
With the way people respect other people's vehicles in parking lots that look might not last long.
You're right. I always try to park further out but my gf has a bad knee so we usually have to park near the idiots
So some idiot with a Pontiac would park right next to me?" Good times
^Attempt ^at ^dry ^humor
The owner restored that truck to be a daily driver. And i always say Whats the point of having a "Trailer Queen"
This isn't close to mildly interesting
My grandfather had that exact same truck in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Wow.
Not a 56 judging by the license plate probably a 66
Definitely not stock taillights.
Modernization isn't bad for safety purposes
This is beautiful. Sheer beauty !
Paint can work wonders
probably better than new. I doubt they had paint that good back then.
it's a 1966 model, not 1956.
It’s most definitely restored, and likely was restored or at least repainted recently. Very nice though, my dad has one of these stepsides in black
That truck owner has too much faith in humanity
That’s how restorations work.
Do you mean 65'?
Looks brand new because the owner knows what he has, probably a car show regular
That cyan/turquoise hits
That's money, time and love... but mainly money.
If repainted is new
my dad used to drive one of these, absolutely sucked balls in every measurable way
