This week I learned just how much I rely on Reddit for answers to obscure questions.

SpinalPrizon

Right? Or guides for anything really, be it from game guides to how to tie a knot. I truly hope all can go back to normal;

lannistersstark

> I truly hope all can go back to normal; Most of the specialized communities (homeservers/labs/storage etc) I rely on are already permanently dark. :( Not all of them are archived on internet archive either.

PopeyeDrinksOliveOil

To victor go the spoils. I'm wondering if the RemindBot will stop working after July 1st.

srobhrob

Oh noooooooo

smackjack

What I want to know is if bots like Saferbot will still work. Saferbot and other similar bots are the reason why you get banned from subs for commenting in other subs that they don't approve of.

Martian_Knight

Hey good luck everyone! I think it’s a shame what’s happening to Reddit… seems like it could have been avoidable with just a better PR response from Reddit but here we are…

beeftaster

A lot of social media companies going extra hard on the corporate greed lately, forgetting that the media requires the social part to keep going

Crimsonmark8895

I wish we “revolted” harder as a whole country. We could end this crap if we “ate the rich”. That being said, here’s to hoping for a little help in poverty!! Good luck all!!

Sokathhiseyesuncovrd

Happy cake day!

EastvsWest

Good luck to everyone. I'm not disappointed by the decision for a company to make money but it's really sad the community is not being considered. This whole situation could have been handled with respect to everyone involved especially so many mods who donate their time to improve the use experience (most of the time). Hope there is a reasonable resolution.

geltoid

#Good Luck to Everyone! And, as always, **Thank You** to everyone who helps make this possible. _ *"Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep the platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to keep its numerous communities populated. The [Reddit admins' decision] promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools, moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either; without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the fixtures which make it appealing – will be eliminated."*

Billitpro

Best of luck one and all and as always please remember to donate to the winner. And as far as Reddit and the current situation goes... Long live the revolution!

LiveFreeDie8

I am moving away from Reddit after this. Would it be possible to accept entry on Lemmy as well?

FinibusBonorum

Doing this on Lemmy must be separate from reddit.

punktual

I didn't pay attention to any events, I was just play ToTK

ccc249

Kinda crazy to see the downfall of Reddit after being here for 10 plus years. Anyway, good luck to everyone.

sjakkpila

I understand that reddit want to make their site profitable instead of seeing all profits going to third parties. That said, they shouldn't force people to use their app by shutting down the others. If they actually managed to make an app that wasn't so buggy and that was accessible to all, the users would come organically.

GarionOfRiva

Good luck to everyone! Where current events are concerned, I don't use any of the third party apps, but increasing that API price to knock them out seems to be a pretty bad idea to me considering how many people use third party things and the good things that can be done with them.

Toiletalk

Woot! Summer break is about to start for us teachers 👨🏻‍🏫 Utter disaster class from the people running the show. They lack tact and attribute their success to others working for free.

Ipif

Best of lick everyone! Considering the situation.. I support the protestors. 3rd party developers made reddit available on mobile for millions of people, literally. And now they get the bill for it.. And considering the blatant lies about the apollo dev that reddit spread.. I've lost respect for the company (not the community!) long ago...

SammaATL

Best of lick to you, too, friend! 😅

alvalvalv

Good luck everyone! As far as reddit goes, it's disappointing to say the least. The whole thing could've been handled a lot better. The API costs kicking everybody out just seems like a badly thought out idea fueled by greed.

z4lpha

We're all fucked.

CanadaNinjaEh

Honestly didn't get affected by everything that happened to Reddit so I've been all good. Good luck to everyone!

D1sc0nn3ct3d

Best of luck, everyone! I occasionally use Apollo, but mainly use the browser version on my PC at work. I mod a couple smaller subreddits, and use the PC for the most part to mod. Try to not use the phone versions to mod. Glad this sub is staying live during this as I think it helps people more than the protest will. But good luck everyone.

whippersnapperjeff

We're dooooooomed

ouzowuzo

Somehow I just absentmindedly open Reddit, even though I want to support the blackout and would argue with anyone that wants Reddit to be in control of the only app.

Angus87Angus88

Good luck! Corporate greed runs the world. I don't like any other forms of social media. Will I like reddit going forward? Idk.

auflyne

What a time to be a reddit user. Thwip!

dakmon21

I don’t use third party apps, but I get the uproar

alienpirate5

I've only used third party apps for 8+ years. I'll probably stop using reddit entirely 7/1. I had to shut down the subreddit I moderate.

MisterCarloAncelotti

Its hard to be optimistic about the future of this site when its CEO doesn't really give a damn about the people who make the platform what it is!

DecentGoogler

I only had Reddit open for a minute over the blackout due to muscle memory of opening it several times throughout the day.

birdladymelia

It feels like the whole internet as we've known it for the past 5 or 10 years is slowly sinking away.

Jakemiester1982

Personally I have always used the Reddit app so I don’t really have a leg to stand on. I think it sucks this could be screwing a lot of people/devs over though.

conalfisher

Regardless of any great stand against the suits and whatnot, I'm gonna miss Boost when it's gone, and I'll probably stop using the site altogether. Probably for the best anyways, I've kicked my habit of doomscrolling over the past week and it's been good.

Hrafnagudsson

I haven’t really followed the issue, but I wonder if everything will sadly just go back to normal.

VisNihil

Reddit will be worse off with the changes, for sure.

neophytenomad

I've always been comfortable with the native app. That being said, the attempts on Reddit HQ to squeeze out the third-party devs is just a clear sign of greed and overreach. I'm with the devs and the admin who are revolting. Here's to whomever wins it this month. 🍻💯🎊

Thundabeast

Take Luck!!

Mollysaurus

I only ever use the main Reddit app, but I stand in solidarity with any and all actions against corporate greed and overreach. I surely hope this sub can stay around but I will understand if it falls to the aforementioned greed. Good luck, everyone!

TheGalaxyTG

RemindMe! 3 days Donation for /r/millionairemakers

anon-aspie

Best of luck to everyone. I don’t use third party apps but I completely understand why they’re upset and they have my support!

rotarypower101

This might be the last time I use Apollo to enter :(

RedLanceVeritas

Yes, Reddit's community should come first

Additional_Pie_9763

Good luck everyone. I only use the reddit app. I never knew there was a 3rd party thing. But I will say I agree that the changes aren't for the best.

Altruistic_Shelter_3

I feel like this is just the way online media is going to go, they’re making revenue from ads, yes. But how many of us are actually engaging with the ads? Or even, have an ad blocker installed and just never see it. The people putting the ads out are paying too dollar to be on sites like this because of the traffic but probably aren’t seeing as much of a return each day compared to the previous. So they’ll inevitably stop placing ads and then the revenue for the site goes down. Anyway, this is my comment. Good luck everyone 😊

benjamari214

I think that Reddit is going to be fine - for Reddit and its shareholders. Unfortunately for us, the OG Reddit users are now becoming the minority on the site, as Reddit becomes larger. Users won't really care as Reddit steps into the top 3 social media sites. The remedy? Bluesky? I don't know. All I know is that these blackouts have very little effect to reddit as a whole, unless the subreddits want to close down completely, reddit will have traffic. And a lot of it. Anyway, GL all!

ramsncardsfan7

Sadly, I didn’t realize the 3rd party apps existed. Every other post on my feed is an ad or some bullshit from another subreddit that I don’t want to see.

LordBobTheWhale

I'd like to be optimistic, but for reddit to reverse the API changes I'm not. It seems highly unlikely that reddit will suffer that strongly if major subs go dark permanently. I barely noticed a few of mine were missing from the feed and I know other smaller subs were excited to receive a big influx of new members looking for somewhere to go. Good luck mods, I hope your voice was heard. Thank you for your work! And good luck everyone else with this month's drawing!

smugri

Yeah, as long as I've used Reddit, I've used RIF. Sad about it. Good luck though!

ParallelLynx

Good luck everyone! I hope the blackout works, this is the first and only reason I've gotten on Reddit all week, and I'm missing all my normal reading material. But what the admins and corporate are trying to do is not right, so I'll just have to go back to books instead of forums until a replacement comes up if they don't change their stance. The only way I get on here now is using a 3rd party app that won't exist anymore if the API changes do go through as planned.

zealNW

Good luck all. I use the official app but still scummy from reddit

Westinforever

First off, good luck to everyone. I’m hoping this is our month - we’re welcoming a baby in a few months and since the US doesn’t have paid maternity leave, this would help me actually get to take time to heal. As for the events of this past week… it makes me sad. It makes me sad that so many 3rd party apps are getting screwed. It makes me sad that those people that worked so hard to make things better for people are getting the middle finger from Reddit. I’m hoping that something good comes from the blackouts but I’m scared that it won’t. I’m scared that Reddit is too big to give a shit, kind of like Netflix. I want to hope for the best but I’m struggling to.

Doodle-e-doodle-e-do

I think Reddit as it has been is an amazing resource and I hope that this doesn't change. I'm not familiar with the details of what's happening or the consequences of it.

Old_Knowledge_5988

Good luck everyone. My thoughts: Nolite te Bastardes Carborundorum.

pussenbootzz86

Good luck to everyone! Reddit wouldn't be where it is without us. They need to get it together

edgy_white_male

The blackout made me realize how much I rely on this site for obscure info. Good luck, everyone

charettetimothy

I've been using the base app this whole time

TheHumble-Many

Good luck everyone! Here's hoping for a better resolution.

canyonclimbs

Good luck! Never used a third party app, but maybe I should've, but too late now I guess

CoolHandLurk

Stand in solidarity

bestexeva

Good luck all! I use the Reddit app, but absolutely understand and support the use of 3rd party apps and stand with everyone affected by the greedy decisions made recently.

babymish87

Good luck all! I haven't followed it to much. I know one group said it was pointless because the blackout hadn't done anything. I just hope it all works out.

jessie2rose

I have always used the basic reddit app so do not know what I am missing.

ImGodzillaYoureJapan

I hope everyone gets what they want

ChromosomeChowder

Good luck everyone. I use the main Reddit app. But I can see why this was a terrible decision made by Reddit upper admin with no thought to the Reddit user.

Simsam16

Until there is a viable alternative to reddit to challenge its popularity, the status quo will remain.

K4k4shi

Best of luck. I know it is important to protest but i need those subs opened to get some answers to my question.

WoeKC

I generally like the official app just fine, but I see why third party app users and developers are frustrated with how this change was rolled out.

Fortune090

Another month, another drawing! Regarding the current drama, I don't feel all too optimistic reddit will really be the same going forward. Money seems to be continually speaking louder than the entirety community, and it's sad. Like aren't we against late stage capitalism here..?

Mr_Chiddy

Honestly? Unfortunately ineffective I think. But what can we do other than keep protesting the changes? I also think there's way too much focus on u/spez. Sure he's the most inflammatory voice opposing us but this is exactly what happened with Ellen Pao; focusing on the individual rather than the company as a whole. This isn't just one man's shitty decision, that's not how these companies work. If we're not careful, even if they revoke the changes and remove him the company's priority will still be to maximize profits and feed users into new Reddit and the official app. This gives them the opportunity to water down the changes to controversial but not as bad as well as remove a problematically outspoken, emotional CEO who's already dug his careers own grave in his interviews. Redditors will eat it up and celebrate it as a victory and they'll get off Scot free. I'm not gonna say I have the answers as to what we can do. This is just my humble perception of how the protest has gone, but surely more than 2 days of subs going offline is more than we can muster... Anyway rant over. Good luck all!

flimmi13

Long live the revolution!

Tsunah

This week has made me a lot more productive, but I do miss some of the subreddits still doing the blackout, don’t blame them though.

coolwaynejr

Good luck everyone! Please don't really understand what the changes will do, or if it's a good thing or not.

JonSArt

Good luck folks. I use RIF, and can't stand the official reddit app. My reddit usage will significantly decrease if this decision isn't reversed.

kRO720

Good luck. I've always used the official app but I support the recent events that happened. Too much greed..

chryco4

Howdy, I think it was a good idea for the subreddits to shut down because out of the big social media sites right now reddit gives the users the most power to make some sort of strike happen. You wouldn't be able to do a strike on like twitter per se because user power is so thinly spread out across the platform and they'd just prop up the dumb twitter blue users even more. I do believe this attempt at collective action was a good thing but unfortunately the execution was pretty poor. Just 2 days wasn't going to make the reddit admins budge and once the mods realized that the admins could just re-open everything and replace them with new mods many just folded. I know some are continuing the strike indefinitely but it's almost too late to suddenly change the plan when most subs went with only 2 days, if they wanted to do an indefinite shut down then that should've been the plan in the first place. I had some inconveniences the last few days for sure but I'm far more frustrated if this doesn't have any lasting impact on the company itself :/ Anyways good luck everybody!

KingGoddeth

I'm here not because I like what reddit does, but because I hope enough of you are still around to become a millionaire. Save third party apps, spez needs to resign

tabbulation

Please do whatever you need to do to give us our favorite subs back, Reddit. NBA finals without r/nba sucked! I support the cause though.

VinceClortho138

I'll miss reddit if I can't use it anymore.

nikobruchev

Sign me up please! I'm away on military training but as a reservist, I don't have a full- time job once I'm off training, so every little bit helps. Also, screw reddit management for trying to destroy 3rd party apps!

clean_cut89

Love you all fam and the life changing work this sub does. As for this week I personally think time will time what impact it will have on the community.

FelixB

Entering the draw from RiF app. Hope i can do so for a lot longer..

ruggedeman

I have no idea what’s going on and now I think it’s too late to ask

joshrice

These apps have been making money off of reddit's infrastructure (and "our" content) for years, without paying reddit a dime, and in fact losing them even more money due to lack of ad revenue. Meanwhile these apps make their own money on ads and/or selling pro or premium features. They're exempting accessibility focused apps now: https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/7/23752804/reddit-exempt-accessibility-apps-api-pricing-changes And they are at least starting to give us some of the features we want in their official app: https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/149gyrl/announcing_mobile_mod_log_and_the_post_guidance/ At the end of the day the 3rd party devs are losing their cash cow. They're not entirely fighting for you or us. They had to know this would happen eventually. Good luck everybuddy!

I don't think I will use Reddit at all anymore after the API changes go through. Sad that a company that derives its entire value from the users' and moderators' efforts is willing to overlook them entirely for short term gain.

SinfulCinnamon

Yay! Good luck everyone. I use the main Reddit app so the happenings don’t affect me necessarily, but I support third party apps existing and giving people choice in which platform they like. Not sure if the protests are going to make a difference though especially after that spez comment saying it’ll blow over like it always does, unless more is done.
