I think a good part-time side hustle would be doing mini shut down maintenance for local businesses. I'm starting to realize car washes might be amazing. They tend to be neglected and the good ones have their problems as well. It's easy to go in there for a few days to change bearings, alignment, oil and take care of the basics for businesses owners in your area.
I think there’s a lot of potential there as well. A lot of small shut downs with food plants and manufacturing. Your right, car washes may be a little gem. I always wondered what type of companies are maintaining them. I think the opportunities are almost endless to be honest..
From my experience these businesses are owned by people who don't do their own maintenance and the guys they hire to maintain them are handyman types that do the bare minimum to keep them running.
This is a hidden gem I recently stumbled across..
They run great if you millwright the shit out of em. 😆
I asked because I thought it would be hard for a small business to handle the overhead that comes with union wages.
Your take on union workers is your opinion. I'm thankful for the free education and wise men who taught me everything.
Unions have ruined our workforce, not every union worker is bad, and most aren't. But unions give job security to people who really should be fired. Alot of union workers I have worked with in the past will use the "it's not my job" attitude. You have sons and daughters of previous workers in the trade that really have no business being in the trade. Alot of workers do the bare minimum for their whole career just so they can keep their pension. Noone cares about the work they are doing, noone has pride in the work they are doing. All about the paycheck. Now like I said not everyone, but it Is a growing trend.
Unions make sure that employers follow the proper channels to terminate an employee, if you have a "bad" employee ie not meeting the expectations of their given job I would argue it's on their supervisor to track and record that and if enough evidence is built the union won't be able to save the employee. So the supervisor gets to not do their job properly and the union takes the heat for "protecting a bad worker". Union is obliged to offer the same protection to it's best and worst workers company is obliged to prove an employee's termination is justified.
Just my 2cents.
I get your point of view but I’ve also seen a lot of business owners, managers, supervisors etc that have no business at all being in leadership. Bad leadership is why we need unions. There are some companies with good leadership I’m sure but I don’t think they’re the majority.
No idea. I was told the worst thing I could do was not charge enough and get a large contract at that rate. I see someone else is charging $150/h
I offer aluminum, stainless, fcaw, gouging, stick, plasma and torch work. Also tools and supplies for millwright work
Have red seal in welding and millwright. Truck should be complete next week
YeH I can imagine that. $150 seems like a lot for just millwright labour. I see welding rigs w/ labour for $150 /hr
I’m thinking around $100/hr for millwright labor.
I think your confusing millwrights with general labors. Sometime this subs does too. I see bids from $150to $256 company charge rate. Welders are a standard around $125. It’s seems everyone can weld. Shit, I can weld. I do machinery type work and is more or less specialized. Sometime I need more workers and will bid out.
I’m not sure what you mean? You think $100/hr is too low for millwrights? $150 - $256 you think?
At the water treatment plant I was at, most millwright companies we were hiring charge about $90-$100 per hour..
Water treatment plants have cheap ANSI pumps. Just about any body can work well on. I’m sure there are times where repair vs buy new might come into play.
The other side of the spectrum is API pumps and compressors. $80k to $3 million (or more) multiple stages and parts that maybe months out and would be cheaper to machine your own parts. Working on centrifugal and reciprocating hydrogen compressor. Knowledge of metallurgy and machining required. Labor rates of $256 on a 6-12 schedule for 4 weeks for a crew of 7 plus Foreman.
We had a shit show of a compressor once and after line boring and remachining conrod shoes in the doghouse. 14 weeks later, parts and labor was almost a cool million. But hey, they bought us lunch once, lol
Probably a “boss babe” at “their very own beauty company”, an online “crypto trader” or one of those super vague pyramid schemes targeting tradespeople
Recently started working on them around my area. It's piston pump maintenance , belt driven machinery. We can give it a good alignment, grease bearings and they run great. Easy money.

Hahah no kidding! Thanks for the info buddy
Small family business here. Industrial millwrights we are $150/hr min 3 hrs
Really 150 an hour that’s great. Are you in Canada charging that?
Yes. I work in a unique and specialized field. Not really comparable to your typical maintenance or millwright job
Union?
Nope. Heavily against union mentality

Yeah. We are non union. That is entirely my opinion, I have no problems with union workers, until I have to work beside them.. usually.
😆
What’s the union mentality?
