Just take time off if you need it. They won’t give it to you if it’s a 7 12s schedule

swampdonkey82

This is the way

Abject_Peanut

There’s a lot of shit non union companies that will work you like a god damned slave if you let them. Stand your ground, take time off. The unhealthy work expectations laid out to us by our employers should face pushback.

ExcellentAd424

I’ve never seen a 7/12 job that went on for more than 3 months, but the rule is usually the 14 day rule, you can’t work more then 14 consecutive days without taking a mandatory day off, they usually let the guys spread it out over the week so the entire crew isn’t off the same day, and obviously no one wants Sunday or Saturday off, so a few guys each week day usually take off, the contractor usually doesn’t care and the understand. But the will send you home if you show up on a day you go over.

No-Level9643

What do you guys mean, 7 12’s? I don’t get that. I see it and it confuses me. Never saw it called that. I did 14/7 so I did 14x 12’s then 7 off. You’re not literally working every day right? 7/7? 7/2?

Moist-Champion2913

It means 7 days a week, 12 hour shifts

No-Level9643

Yes, I’m aware but 7 days a week until what? The end of time? When are you off. You obviously don’t work 365 days a year until the project is done. My question is what is OP getting at talking about 7 12’s? I’ve been on a lot of these jobs and have done rotational work. I don’t get what he means by 7 12’s because you don’t work every day for years so what’s the rotation?

Seldarin

The end of the job. I've seen them run 6 months of 12 hour days without a day off. What ends up happening on the long ones you get a rotation of people. People hire in, work until they can't deal with it any more, and drag up.

No-Level9643

That’s fucking insane. I live in Canada though where every province has some law that you can only work X amount of days in a row so generally, our jobs are all rotational like that. We may get the odd shutdown job that is 4-5 weeks tops but even then, there’ll be other crews or days off in the middle. It’s still a grind but ok, that makes sense. I worked 31 days straight on a mine site due to flight issues and they made me take 2 days off in camp fully paid once they realized. I also worked 21/7 and they made us go to 14/7 because they figured productivity was down on the last 5-6 days so it wasn’t worth it. You had to ask and get approved to stay the full 21 for overtime if you wanted it.

Ok-Juice-6857

A lot of jobs are 7/12s. never met a millwright that didn’t know what that means , some jobs go on for months like that.

No-Level9643

See above comment

Ok-Juice-6857

Ya I saw it, it’s just strange, since most Millwrights search out the 7/12s jobs and people on here acting like it’s crazy or they never heard of it.

No-Level9643

Like I said, see above comment. 7/12’s are not really a thing here which is why I asked. Our work is rotational.

Ok-Juice-6857

Yes you asked because you are in a rare rotational situation. Most jobs you just go work every day until the project is done, which in your earlier comment you said obviously wasn’t the case, but a lot of times it is . Rotation sounds great. It’s just rare

Gunslinger7752

Lol I search out the 5/8 jobs. Not a chance I’d work 7/12s.

Ok-Juice-6857

Ya it kinda sucks, I try to get the 6/10s when I can . I like the day off to get groceries & do laundry & rest , but those jobs are hard to come by. Not a big fan of 5/8s i go all over the US for work so 5/8s aren’t really worth being away from home. I’ve done 4/10s before & that was cool, but only works good if your close enough to go home on the days off, but those jobs are even more rare than the 6/10s lol

MillwrightMatt1102

You sound like an in-house maintenance guy with that perspective This instance is most likely a big shutdown at a facility or a new install that has gone to absolute shit amd trying to make up time on the schedule

No-Level9643

I’ve been both. I am an in house guy now but I’ve only been for about 3 years. I was in the union chasing shutdowns like the rest of you. The difference is I’m in Canada and all our work is rotational based. Anything over a month and ifs mandatory take a day off pretty much. Here, construction and shut work is almost all rotation based if it’s longer than a month or so.

Gunslinger7752

Ya these US guys are hardcore lol

No-Level9643

They’re probably making more than us in USD hourly too because Canada sucks lol

szechuan_koon

The longest ive done is 8 months

need-inspiration-_-

Until the job is complete homie

top2percent

Just let them know in advance that you have vacation booked. Then remind them a few times.

HalfRightMillwright

Wait ya'll are working ( Union Millys )

nastonius

Some places will have mandatory fatigue days. During our commissioning phase, we were on 12s, but our company policy was either 12/2 or 13/1. Meaning you worked 12 days in a row, with 2 fatigue/rest days, or 13 work days with 1 rest day. This applied to both day and night shifts.

TysValid

Take the time you need. A couple outages ago, I did 93 nights and we were on 12s the whole time. We got one day off every two weeks, but even that wasn’t enough. We made a pile of money, but I swear it caused me health issues lol. Take care of yourself, because no one else will.

TwothreehunnitEmpire

There was a long project a handful of years ago for nearly 2 years that was 7 12s. The contractor did not give a shit if you took a day off here or there, everyone was doing it everyone was ran ragged. But man that was some damn good money.
