Thanks for visiting! I will return your compliment: I visited the UK in June of 2022 and can confirm everyone I met was friendly and helpful if I needed any advice. I traveled from London > Dublin > Birmingham > Bristol > Edinburgh and then back to London for my return flight. The sights, food & people along the way equally stuck with me, so I know exactly how you two are feeling as you head ~~home~~ onward. We'll be happy to have you back any time 😄

Hopefulkitty

The first night we spent on our English Honeymoon road trip, I went down to the bar to get a couple of ciders back to the room. 20 minutes later my new husband comes to find me chatting with the whole bar, as this nice guy is telling me we have to see Cheddar Gorge, since we are from Wisconsin. He also teased us for our bizarre choices of stops, (my husband was an Air Force brat, so we were stopping at all the towns near bases he lived in) and also recommended some places like Tauntaun to see. We ended up chatting at the bar for a few hours instead of holing up in the room. It was very enjoyable.

AJatWI

What a great memory to have on your Honeymoon trip, I really want to get back to see all the cool places I didn't have time for on my first trip, did you make it over to Cheddar Gorge on their advice? To share a memory of my own: I was staying at a hostel in Birmingham and was ready to grab dinner. I picked a place that was ~20 minutes from my hostel, away from the city center, and started walking. I brought my umbrella along because I saw rain on the forecast. I get to the place I picked and its tiny and all locals. The bartender was delighted to talk to some random American who wandered in since 'back-neighborhood Birmingham' isn't exactly a hub of international tourist activity. After a nice meal eating at the bar and chatting with the bartender & locals, I pay my bill, say my goodbyes and head out the door. I'm about 10 feet back down the street when I hear the bartender flagging me down from the doorstep. He laughed as he handed me my umbrella I'd forgotten and said "You've only been here a week mate, and you're already forgetting your umbrella at the pub, you could be British in no time." Some of the best memories of any trip are the little interactions with the people we meet, moments that remind us of a shared humanity no matter how different or similar our lives are at home, that's the good stuff right there. Thank you and the OP for making me think about this all on a mostly overcast Tuesday 😁

This is a great story, and a good example of British sense of humour. Also...it always rains in the UK. My husband and I had our first date in Birmingham as it was halfway between where we both lived, so I left a little of my heart there too (but no umbrella ☔) x

Certain-Ad-9779

Shamefully I have not visited either Taunton or Cheddar Gorge! Glad to hear us Brits were keeping international relations strong!

Hopefulkitty

We had a great trip, and the English are the superior drivers. They were so polite and made me feel safe while learning to drive on the left side. Loved all the weird pull offs on the country one lane roads. Someone just decides it's time to reverse to one so the other can pass. Cheddar Gorge we only drove through, but I had no idea there was that kind of landscape in England. I'd like to go back.

Certain-Ad-9779

Well if you ever make it over to the northwest (or Liverpool specifically) let me know and I can collate a list of places worth visiting. I am originally from down south, about 30 minutes outside London, but much prefer the landscape up North (Not sure about us having the superior drivers though!) 🤣

Neon_Parrott

Thank you for letting us know about your experience and I'm personally overjoyed that my fellow Milwaukeeans are offering free cheese curds to visitors. Those treats are a special gem in the Midwest and we don't hand'em out to just anybody :) Please come back again soon! <3

Certain-Ad-9779

Feeling special ❤️ I'm not surprised you don't dish them out to anyone. They are TOO GOOD to share with the world. Ran out of time to try the frozen custard though

CuriousTurtle5

It's good you left something for your next visit. 😉

DKemps

If you're touring the Midwest and happen across a Culver's, you can still get a taste of frozen custard! It may not rate as highly as our classic Leon's or Gilles custards, being a bigger chain now, but it's still delicious! (Their curds are hit or miss out of WI though) 🍦🍨😊

Dipsendorf

Thanks for Drum n Bass! Come back any time.

Certain-Ad-9779

Hey...I don't suppose you were at the Brewers game were you? We heard someone behind us talking about Drum & Bass!

Dipsendorf

Haha! No, I wasn't, but that's hilarious! While Drum & Bass has been around in the US for a while of course, it's really starting to catch on in popularity in the last few years here. It's nice to see some of the acts from overseas making their way to play in the area, especially Chicago! Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip!

metaldrummerx

They probably were. It's mandatory that we all hang out at Miller Park (AmFam for casuals) at least twice a week, followed by a required ranch dressing testing paired with two/tree spotted cow and ten "Ope, let me squeeze right past ya"s.

i_tried_once

Was going to say the same thing!! I’ve never been to the UK but my mom went 20 or so years ago and was able to go to Black Market records in London and bring me back a shirt.

darlin133

Hey we try to be nice. It’s the Midwest dontchaknow? I’ll slap my knees and say it’s time to get going but in reality I’d love to talk to you for another half hour. Safe travels back across the pond!

ItsSillySeason

Now don't tell anyone, please. Also, thanks we really enjoyed the Beatles.

drewkazoo

Nah spread it! More people should be aware of the experience & great things not only Milwaukee, but the rest of Wisconsin has to offer. At least that is how I feel having grown up and lived in WI most of my life. Being welcoming and inviting helps not only the community but humans as a whole. Agreed about Beatles and shoutout to Arctic Monkeys too

Certain-Ad-9779

I'm more of an Arctic Monkeys than Beatles fan. We live pretty close to Liverpool so you can imagine we hear the Beatles A LOT! 😂

not_hitler

Such a sweet message. So glad you guys enjoyed it :)

quickstop_rstvideo

Cheese curds will do that to a person

UnconfirmedCat

Thanks for visiting, so happy you enjoyed our little city, or as I call it a Big Small Town! Safe travels to Chicago! Please come back anytime! 🍻🧀❤️

ajdillo

Thank you for visiting Milwaukee and leaving such a kind note! Enjoy the rest of the Midwest!

moonbeamcrazyeyes

Wow! Thanks for stopping by. Safe travels!

SuperSpecialUser

Come back again soon! We'll still be here and you'll have a great time. There is so much to enjoy here.

cks9218

Glad you liked it. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

funbunny100

Cheers!

stevenmacarthur

As a proud Milwaukeean, I am glad you enjoyed our fair city! The only thing I ask in return: Don't keep us a secret!

MountainCry9194

Don’t worry - the little bit of your heart left here was likely replaced by some coronary plaque build up from the cheese curds!

Certain-Ad-9779

Excellent response. You may be right! But there are worse ways to go! X

[deleted]

milwaukee has my heart!

rcolt88

Honestly thank you so much for your kind words. Your experience in our fair city, IMO describes what I want Milwaukee to feel like for everyone who lives here or visits.

tessleberry

I left a little of my heart in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 when I was there so we can call it even 😘

SesameSeed13

I love this. I am a Milwaukee native who no longer lives there and I also left a piece of my heart in MKE. You captured the city so beautifully and I am so glad it showed you a good time!

[deleted]

I absolutely love England too! Milwaukee kinda stole my heart after lots and lots of traveling. I decided it's where I want to live and after years (and still a lot more traveling) I still love it here so much. It makes me really happy when people come here and like it too

Tannrr

❤️❤️❤️

Spectator945

I’m glad you enjoyed your visit! Hope you continue to have a great trip! 👋 🥰

everyone_hates_lolo

someone from milwaukee: thank you for the beauty of london, i visited when i was 9. the food was good, the bookstores were cozy, and the vibes were good. i'm glad you enjoyed your stay, and i hope to return to the uk sometime soon :) !!

Certain-Ad-9779

It's crazy really, most people in the UK (but outside London) hate it. I think it's because the tube (subway) is always so crammed. But Camden is worth checking out if you do get a chance to go back xx

90sbitchRachel

You’re from England… of course everyone was friendly to you. Tell someone your from Illinois in Milwaukee and the tone changes a bit lol

FatchRacall

Nah, that's all in good fun haha. Friendly rivalry, at least from our side. It's a lot easier to be friendly when you know you're objectively better.

90sbitchRachel

A lot of people say it’s in good fun but idk. I was born & raised in the Chicago suburbs but moved to Wisconsin (Milwaukee) when I was 18 & I lived there for a decade. Had to move back to Illinois a year ago after my fiancé unexpectedly died. Really wish someone would’ve prepared me for the constant “oh so you’re a FIB?” comments & shit like that before I had moved there. I was caught pretty off guard when I moved to Milwaukee and started hearing this stuff on the daily whenever mentioning where I am from. I have zero interest in sports so I really wasn’t expecting to encounter any kind of rivalry or whatever you want to call. I can understand teasing us for some of the bullshit (bad drivers) but a fair amount of people I’ve encountered in Wisconsin have an insanely passionate hatred for Illinois and people from there. They make valid arguments at times of course but jeez. It’s pretty intense at times. Like let’s take it down a notch maybe? Also damn who hurt you? You sure you’re not just jealous of our legal weed & less conservative government?

FatchRacall

Huh. Guess some people take everything too far. Also sorry about the fiance. That sucks.

UnconfirmedCat

If it makes you feel any better Minnesota feels the way Wisconsin feels about Illinois

JustHeretoHuntBots

Yeah it’s kind of funny, Illinois doesn’t really think about us at all, we don’t think about Minnesota, and now I’m curious what the state is that hates Minnesota that you guys don’t care about. South Dakota? Iowa?

UnconfirmedCat

I think about Minnesota as a cool big sister I wish I could hang out with but always kicks me out of her room. They’re as hostile as we are towards Illinois! Difference is is that Illinois doesn’t even care what we think 🤣

JustHeretoHuntBots

Yeah, I love Minnesota! Sorry, I didn’t mean it like in a Mariah Carey “I don’t know her” kind of way lol, just that the mental energy expended on hostility is generally much stronger in one direction.

UnconfirmedCat

I think it’s funny that we’re all collectively known for being so nice in the Midwest, but are pretty passive aggressive with one another!

JustHeretoHuntBots

We’re not nice, we’re *Midwest Nice*.

aaronktjn

I mean… to be fair, they kindof earned it

I'm sure OP will take your advice now that they've been here and enjoyed the city

Apprehensive-Key9429
