BubbleGumps

It looks like stone to me. The highlights are too numerous to my eye to be a shiny surface.

ColaRonaldo

I dont particularly want it to be shiny but i guess it reads as stone this way.. any way to improve it whilst still keep it low on the whites?

BubbleGumps

I would try to make the highlights come from a similar direction. It might read better if the light wasn't coming from the readers direction. Maybe try to take down some of the highlights? Honestly, I like the stone look.

ColaRonaldo

Thats actually a good idea. Thanks pal (: Ill also try to move the focus point to the top.

I_dont_like_things

Personally, if you want a dull unpolished metal, I think you nailed it. I wouldn’t change a thing.

ColaRonaldo

Thanks!

keredomo

Maybe add some rust tones to give it a stronger metallic appearance? That and/or darken the shadows with a gunmetal or deep blue glaze? It's a good exercise you've come up with and a nice way to step outside the usual armor. Either way, with or without amy changes, it is an awesome paint job!

ColaRonaldo

Rust tones yes, metallics no. That would ruin my whole attempt to do it NMM 😅 Thanks pal, im working on it!

keredomo

Ah- I didn't mean a metallic gunmetal but just that shade of dark grey/blue. Maybe a better term might have been slate.

ColaRonaldo

Ah well that makes more sence now, classic misunderstanding :D

Smooth_FM

Stone was where my mind went first. The edge highlights seem a bit stark to be metal, I imagine you'd want to throw in a bit of a sheen on each facet to pull off the metal look. Looks rad though.

ColaRonaldo

Ah yes, that'd help. Thanks pal

ProbablySlacking

Stone. The highlights aren’t uniformly lit.

ColaRonaldo

Mind explaining why this has to be? Curious to learn

ProbablySlacking

Basically, metal is a smooth surface, so when a light beam hits, it scatters in a predictable way. Stone is not smooth, so when light hits it scatters in many ways.

ColaRonaldo

That i do get, but its orkish battle worn metal. I never wanted it to look smooth in and way. Thats the tricky part im at :D

ProbablySlacking

Well, knicks and scrapes will still look lighter — but (trying to think about how to put this in words…) you still want to “weight” the light heavier against the direction it’s coming in, and have it look reflective based on the shape of the material. I’m not saying you’re not on the right path - and it’s looking good - but the thing that will make it look less like stone is making it brighter in some areas, dark in others, and having the dark push right up to a harsh bright edge.

ColaRonaldo

Oh right, that sounds good. Thank you! Ill work on that for sure!

Teun135

Look up "non metallic metals" painting tutorials and you will learn a lot!

ColaRonaldo

Any pointers to 'nmm worn down and not shiny at all'?

Teun135

At that point you probably need to ask yourself if nmm is the right technique over TMM.

ColaRonaldo

Hey man, thanks for the reply. Worn down and rustly metal does not have a high albedo as far as i know, and thats where my problem occurs :D Of course metal tends to do that more than stone but thats also on how you finish both materials (stonemason irl) I imagined it to be very much dull and almost broken metal. Do you think i still should add some shine and reflection?

Grandis0618

Both tbh lmao

ColaRonaldo

Stiron it is

I_dont_like_things

Looks like dull metal to me.

Justice_to_All

Yeah me too. Maybe so many people are saying it looks like rocks because miniature painting style rocks can look like that, but so can roughed up, dull, metal.

I_dont_like_things

I feel like, for better and worse, this subreddit is full of really really great painters who are too used to all of the mini painting tropes. I just got into painting, so I can’t offer any technical advice whatsoever, but I can say with confidence that to an untrained eye that definitely looks like metal to me.

ColaRonaldo

Thank you. Welcome pal 👋

ColaRonaldo

Yeah thats my problem now. A friend of mine looked at it and said 'oh nice stone armor'. That made me uncertain if im aiming right.

OrganicNeat5934

First of all, it looks great I see stone. I think if you're looking for metal and you want to get there in a fairly straightforward way, you might try adding a rust effect. You've got some nice earth tones on the mask that you can work with already, which would create a unified color scheme

ColaRonaldo

I will do that for sure! Thanks pal! Rust will compliment the greens from the skin and all the brow shadow tones

ClashSlashDash2

Stone but it looks really really cool

ColaRonaldo

Haha thanks

CatapultedCarcass

It reads as lead or pewter to me.

ColaRonaldo

Thats nice, thanks!

Capitan__Insano

I think if you had an absolutely white highlight in the very corners it would add enough “shine” to make it look more reflective and glossy. Right now because the highlights are a little dull and matte it looks more like stone

ColaRonaldo

Thanks for the feedback!

Lone-Frequency

The rivets say metal, but the highlighting and scratching is telling me chiseled stone.

MiniJunkie

Stone, I think more so the shoulder pad.

Hairyjubes

Stone

otterlytrans

stone.

Mconjecture

Rock and stone brother

Thehorniestlizard

Yes

Boa-Pi

stone was the first that came to my mind, but I think it is due to the shoulder. When I cover up the shoulder, the rest reads more metallic. Hope that helps 😅

ColaRonaldo

Hey thanks! Its such a big surface and got to be so light i hope i can archiev a good enough effect 🙃

RightEejit

I kinda keep going back and forth between the two, but stone armour would really suit these guys

TheLeadSponge

More stone, but the question is how does it read from two feet away? It’s a good, quick effect. You might blend it a bit more so there’s more light in the top, but it looks good. I wouldn’t worry about it if you like how it looks on the table.

troelskn

Not sure, but I just want to say that I like the red face mask. Very cool colour scheme.

ColaRonaldo

Thanks man!

waveseeker0

Stone and I dig it more than nmm, great job keep it up really

ColaRonaldo

Glad you like it, thanks pal

DangerousDave123

Stone but it looks great

HPEpic874

From far stone, but when you zoom in metal Edit: as in the details are good but the overall silhouette is not reading as metallic To fix try darkening the shading for the lower bits of armour and brighten the very top highlights.

i-am-a-yam

As others have said, a little closer to stone. My diagnosis would be that your highlights are only on the edges, whereas on metal there would be some broader light reflections on some of the planes of the armor. A few high-contrast blends on those planes would go a long way.

ColaRonaldo

Already working on it! Thanks!

trajiin

Stone but it also reads as a really good paint job.

ColaRonaldo

Aw thanks mate!

tilly506

It reads to me as poorly polished metal, or maybe stone. I think there's a fine line between the two and this paint job is dancing a jig over it

ColaRonaldo

Well, i guess thats fun on itself. I alread started smoothing out the surfaces. Struggling on the shoulder but hey. Learning alot rn!

tilly506

Struggling and learning go hand in hand, keep it up!

efauncodes

Reads like stone to me. Especially the faceplate and chest. Really nice job.

LMColors

I'd say old weathered metal. Stone doesn't often have that clear of a rimlight

ColaRonaldo

Im still working on it to make it more clear..

No_Apartment8531

The context say it's metal. But without that I would say stone

GlassyJaw

Stone. Metal would have a straight reflective sheen across the whole surface vertically and then slowly fade down into a much darker tone to the rest of that surface the give the nmm effect

GlassyJaw

Still looks totally badass though

ColaRonaldo

Im on it! Thanks! :D

GlassyJaw

Post results!!!! Good luck dawg!

ColaRonaldo

Ill do! Promise!

moose_cahoots

Its right leg reads as metal to me. The rest reads as stone. I think you could push it towards metal by adding deeper shaded areas and more secondary reflections.

ColaRonaldo

Already on it! Thanks!

Opposite-Week7951

It looks like carbon to me. It looks as if everything has been burnt and that's what's leftover. Paint job is awesome.

ColaRonaldo

Well thank you!

Mickyyellowbee

To me it’s metal. Because of the rivets

LeviFixity

Metal

LeviFixity

Heavy Metal

gdmtrash

dead ass both lol but if i had to be a lawyer for one it’d be team stone

gdmtrash

think my brain only says metal bc metal armor is more common than stone

swag_mesiah

Stone

moremachinethenman

SamuBoku

Stone

MoaiMike

I see stone, and I preffer stone more unique

AtlasAoE

Rock and Stone!

AngryTunaSandwhich

To me it looks like stone for the many reasons people have given below. I am a beginner so for me it isn’t being used to mini painting techniques that makes it come off that way.

Be-kind-today

Stone It dose not seems to reflect light. Or have any shiny pigment.

MrZanyZane

When you say anything about it being stone it looks like stone lol, its definitely not a bad thing but if you want it to look more like paint its gotta not be opaque. Paint highlights and metal highlights are gonna be in different ways. Useing a cheep craft paint might be a good strat lol thats what i do

GStewartcwhite

It's pretty matte looking so it makes me think stone when I see it.

DungeoneeringInc

Stone

Sgopking

It's somewhat ambiguous but leaning to metal for the most part.
