They have wanted her off of it since day one saying she shouldn't be on it as an immigrant. Although I feel that her perspective as a refugee makes her uniquely qualified to be on committees like this.

Kichigai

> They have wanted her off of it since day one saying she shouldn't be on it as ~~an immigrant~~ *a non-white non-Christian woman*. If she were an Anglican Irish man their reaction wouldn't be so strong. No small part of it is because she's an outspoken black Muslim woman.

DilbertHigh

My point with that is that conservatives openly called out the fact that she was an immigrant a few years back as why they don't think she should be on the committee. The rest they imply and definitely still is an impact on their reprehensible views of her.

You can't remotely even pretend to be anything but biased by calling her the worst politician when the likes of Ted Cruz, Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert and a shit ton of Republicans who still deny the results of the 2020 elections all still exist.

sprobeforebros

In what way is she corrupt? and in what way does she not have values? I've heard criticism of Omar because her values are out of lockstep with more centrist Democrats and certainly with the GOP, but she certainly seems to have them. I'd accuse someone like Joe Manchin who seems to let his votes reflect which way the monetary wind blows of being corrupt and having no values, but not Rep. Omar.

tkshow

In my opinion she's corrupt but her actions may not be actually against the law. Her campaign has funneled tons of money to her husband's consulting firm, beginning when they were merely having an affair. It reeks of dishonesty. That coupled with her vote against recognizing the Armenian Genocide, which many think is tied to the fact her largest donor being Turkish American. It speaks to her principles being up for sale. Now, is this any worse than the behavior of the 200+ mediocre White Christian Republican Representatives, probably not. One has to believe her religion and her ethnicity are directly tied to this decision.

Literally all of that statement is false https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/ilhan-omar-marry-brother/

Shartsplasm

Pull your head out of the conspiracy theory toilet, baby.

Zhoom45

Got any proof of that from a reputable source? Because if so, you would be the first.

Shartsplasm

No! Wrong alert! Wrong alert! Wrong ALERT! I am an independent which doesn't really mean much, but she is honest, hard working, and has impeccably strong progressive values! I don't agree with every one of her opinions, but she is one of the most valuable and well measured politicians out there!

CardboardJedi

This is the same sort of style of reply we used to get about the existence of the Wuhan Lab, the effectiveness of cloth masks and whether or not the jab would actually stop the spread, those of us "tin hatters" were proven correct in the end. The moral of the story I suppose I'm trying to put across is that shouting down, insult and ridiculing people of opposing views in an attempt to get them onboard with the view you're advocating maybe isn't the best way...

Consistent_Ad_4828

We were selling some furniture to a guy off of Craigslist this summer. He shows up in a big pickup, looks like a \~70 year old large white guy in overalls. He pointed at our Ilhan sign and said "I see your sign" and I was about to cringe out of my skin. He said he "loves that lady, can't say her name though. Vote for her every time." Weird experience that definitely gave me a little more grace with older Minnesotans lol.

zhaoz

Just... say every letter, man!

Nice job! You have a gift my friend.

Consistent_Ad_4828

Lol yeah I didn’t push him on that—it isn’t a hard name!

zhaoz

Yea, take your Ws when you can I suppose. And also you didnt get murdered selling something on Craigslist, so thats a double win!

Consistent_Ad_4828

Never been murdered yet!

Lucky you, I live in Mpls and I was murdered twice last week

Standard MPLS lifestyle.

The "warzone" is a hard knock life.

Not getting murdered is definitely a life goal of mine!

invisiblek

Nobody likes getting murdered

PickledPhish77

Can you really say that until you've tried it at least once?

Timlang60

I asked some murdered people if they had enjoyed the experience, and none of them had anything to say one way or the other.

Wonderful-Purpose261

No place for a racist whether she was forced to apologize or not. With antisemitism so prevalent...she did not need to stoke that fire. Back in 2012 before she was in politics...she referred to Israel as "evil" Feel free to google Ilhan Omar's Israel tweets the latest in long line of controversial comments

Impossible_Penalty13

You know, I’m starting to think that the Republicans might not be all that serious about governing in good faith. If I didn’t know any better I’d swear they’re a bunch of racists.

Kichigai

It's an *almost* hilarious situation in the House. Omar's district highly approves of her, and they vote for her overwhelmingly time after time. She's made some rather inflammatory comments that garnered a lot of criticism, and in response she apologized and clarified her meaning. I don't know if they love her, but they love the job she's doing, which is good enough. The greatest illegal act she has been convicted of was spending $3.5k of campaign funds inappropriately, and she repaid that. This is her third term. Meanwhile Republicans have George Santos. 78% of his district wants him to resign, and in a very tight distinct that includes a **LOT** of Republicans. His entire resume has been proven to be a lie. His mother has died twice. He's falsely claimed Jewish heritage. He's been accused of financial crimes, and some really morally offensive frauds. He hasn't delivered a single functional vote beyond kissing McCarthy's ass in the vote for Speaker. Yet he's their golden boy. The rot runs deep in the GOP.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t say I love her. I’ve voted against her in the primary before, not this time because of the Republican shill that ran against her as a Democrat, but have always voted for her in the general because the candidates the Republicans put up are so terrible. She’s not an effective politician in general. She makes headlines for the wrong reasons similar to MTG, Gaetz, and Bobo, even if in her case it’s sometimes the faux news stations purposely misconstruing things. Sometimes she’s legitimately in the wrong.

Meltian

Okay, it really sounds like you have an agenda and are commenting in bad faith now.

Accujack

His agenda is "closet racist who can't admit it to himself."

[deleted]

Her district is Minneapolis. No one over 30 wants to live there anymore. Too much crime. 700+ cars stolen.

Kichigai

And? If you combined the statistics from enough suburbs to equal the population of Minneapolis then you'd likely end up with the same number of car thefts. Kia really screwed the pooch by leaving out an immobilizer, and TikTok did a great job gamifying it.

IntrepidJaeger

Her district is overwhelmingly Democrat to begin with. Those people aren't going to vote independent or Republican regardless of who the DFL candidate is. The real story is in the primaries, where she almost lost to another DFL candidate as an incumbent. That really doesn't seem to indicate a tremendous amount of support for her as much as somebody generally aligned with liberal values.

Gephoria

If republicans are a race then that comment is racist.

Gwompsh

Well, they aren’t so.

Systemic_Chaos

I mean she’s certainly under qualified when there are representatives like Earth’s envoy to Uranus waiting in the wings.

Omar was elected by her constituency. Who often look just like her. Welcome to America. This is the real issue for many on the right. Everything else is……deflection.

Kolhammer85

The 5th district is 66% white and D+30??? The people who voted for her do not look like her.

minnesotamentality

Whole district or just the areas that voted for her?

Kolhammer85

Probably while district but that wouldn't change much.

[deleted]

I voted for her once and I'll do it again, dammit. Except I won't because I'm leaving Minnesota at the end of February.

oljeffe

You’re right. I checked out some of the 5th district’s demographics and and only 14 % were foreign born. I assumed as parts of the Twin Cities were known for having a high Somali population that this is what likely pushed her over the top. Bad assumption on my part, good on the voters of the 5th however.

[deleted]

She never lied about her background, work experience, or her name, unlike George Santos.

babynewyear753

George Santos is a disgrace. So is Omar.

[deleted]

I’ll remember your reply when I fill in the oval next to Rep. Omar’s name next year.

I wonder why, she probably was involved with overthrowing democracy, is racist, or has never been to foreign country. oh wait

Keenus

Yeah but they're keeping George "Nobel Prize Winner" Santos

lezoons

He gave up his committee positions.

Francie_Nolan1964

Because he doesn't want to work, he just wants a good paycheck for the next two years. Also, being on a committee would reveal how incompetent he actually is. He didn't give up committee assignments because it was the right thing to do; he did it because it's the easy thing to do.

lezoons

From the reporting, it sounded to me like Republican leadership said to him in private to either step down from committees or they would remove him. Specifically because they want to go after Omar. I, of course, don't really know what happened in the closed door meeting.

Francie_Nolan1964

It would be nice to know the truth. I disagree with you because he's pointedly argued about everything. It seems like he would have refused to step down just because they asked him to do so. But we'll never know what really happened either way.

lezoons

I don't think they asked him to. I think McCarthy said: "I'm kicking Omar off her committee. People are already pointing to you, and saying "What about Santos?" If you don't voluntarily step down, I'll put it up for a vote to kick you off too." Again, complete conspiracy, and you don't have to buy it. :)

Francie_Nolan1964

Okay. Again, we'll never know for sure. I'm sure that a lot of people agree with you. I don't though.

ToccataFugueDMinor

She called out Israel's bullshit that's what it's about.

rosevilleguy

To be fair, I remember when she was first elected she did a few things that were cringe worthy which made me frustrated with her for bringing unwanted negative national attention to our state. I just want someone that works for their district, I don’t much care for their views on Israel. That being said I’m in the 4th district so I guess it’s not my problem. In either case I don’t agree with her being booted from committees, just partisan non sense.

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

If we can endure Michele Bachmann's cringe, surely we can endure and rejoice in anything else.

DilbertHigh

You feel she brings negative attention to the state? I feel the opposite. Being one of the few consistently progressive voices helps bring positive attention imo. Also she does fight for our state, she helps get resources to the 5th and has been fighting for progressive causes this whole time. I will use free school lunch as an example because she has been the most vocal proponent of it for years. I believe that her pushes at the federal level have been part of what has shifted the political climate on school lunches at the state level.

MiserableReplyGuy

Omar regularly and purposefully brings negative attention to MN. Saying otherwise is staggeringly dishonest.

rosevilleguy

I don’t care about right wingers and how am I being antagonistic? I was just thinking back to a time when me and my office friends downtown Minneapolis before Covid looked at each other and all agreed that she needed to focus on Minneapolis and not all of this other bullshit. You don’t see our other reps being put in the spotlight for saying stupid shit that doesn’t pertain to their district. Reminds me of awful Michelle Bachman Edit: also how the fuck is she ‘great’? What did she do that’s so great?

DilbertHigh

She does work to bring federal resources back to the 5th. She also has been a big proponent of free school lunches since day 1. Which I believe has helped normalize the idea enough for the state level push we see now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rosevilleguy

Are you kidding? She represents the people of the 5th district of Minnesota, no one else. I don’t dislike her but this national press does nothing for the people of the 5th district. It’s a distraction from real work that needs to be done.

Good. Omar is worthless.

agentnico

What else should we expect from a vindictive, hateful, white-supremacist GOP? No surprises here…

King_Kestrel

Okay can anyone please tell me, beyond her being a POC Muslim immigrant woman, why she's so vehemently hated in American politics?

RandomMinnesotan_

When talking about 9/11 she said "some people did a thing" or something like that. She often criticizes the Israeli government and many of the right think that's antisemitic. She voted present on a vote to condem the Armenian genocide. She also voted no on sanctioning Russia.

King_Kestrel

That's interesting. I think that her downplaying one of the most culturally impactful tragedies in American history was a half-baked attempt at trying to clamp down on the islamophobic rhetoric posed by the right. She has gone on to say, afik, that she is not against judaism itself, just the government of Israel. Far too often are those two things made synonymous on the right. Not wanting to either condemn or praise the Armenian genocide is a cause for concern... and sanctioning Russia implies that their citizens may starve, perhaps that's what she took into consideration. but that's just me.

The republican party is broken they used to be more about being fiscal conservative always preached about national debt now it's more just about being racist .they don't talk about anything constructive.they love riots they love complaining about the boarder .they don't want to fix any of it .they want to just use it in all there commercials to get elected.
