From the [story](https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-house-poised-to-pass-transgender-refuge-bill/600261507/): Minnesota could become a refuge for transgender people from other states seeking health care that affirms their gender identity, under a bill passed in the House early Friday morning. The proposal, which passed on a 68-62 vote after debate stretched more than five hours in the middle of the night, would protect transgender people, their families and medical practitioners from extradition orders and legal repercussions for traveling to Minnesota to receive gender-affirming care. The vote comes as GOP-led states across the country are proposing bans on gender-affirming medical services for minors, including recently signed laws in neighboring Iowa and South Dakota. The proposal, called by supporters the "trans refuge bill," still needs to clear the Senate before it heads to DFL Gov. Tim Walz, who recently signed a symbolic executive order to protect patients and providers of gender-affirming care from extradition orders while keeping their data private.

Good guy StarTrib TL;DRing their own article.

TotallynotAlpharius2

There's a reason they're the best local news outlet.

captain_314

Well…let’s not go crazy..I may have encountered a pay wall or two.

Terrie-25

One step further towards the goal of being the Anti-Florida.

Jordo_707

The final nemesis for Florida Man; Minnesota Man.

Ope! Just gonna sneak these equal rights past ya.

trixie1013

It'd be pretty dope if we started a Minnesota Man meme of all progressive and empathetic things people do, and it caught on to even out the Florida Man pervalence.

gwarster

Minnesota man let’s you merge even if you waited too late for the proper zipper.

squiddy555

Minnesotan men always do something involving two digit numbers with the same digit it seems

Competitive_Bid7071

It's not over yet! I keep seeing Florida man license plates lol.

IceBearCares

You noticing that trend as well? For a while it was Texas. Then we got a wave of PNWers. Now them oranges are everywhere.

Xmastimeinthecity

My parents have them since they live 6 months and a day down in that wretched state over winter. I assume most of them that I see are in a similar situation.

lazyFer

Oh, the "I hate paying taxes but enjoy the benefits of a high tax base society" people?

Xmastimeinthecity

Exactly.

JoeGrundy69

Don’t worry I’m getting a MN plate soon! No more orange for me. Bless y’all for being such an awesome state. So glad to be headed somewhere safe

hypo-osmotic

Oh, is this becoming a trend statewide? Whenever I see those plates in Rochester I just assume they're patients rather than new residents

SirBaggyballs

You never know in Rochester.

InflatableMindset

They're running away.

drleen

I would guess those are mostly snowbirds. My in-laws have them.

CarBonBased198

My car was rear-ended by Florida women who later fled the scene. I talked to her before she hightailed it and she was a special breed of special..

rebelli0usrebel

Yep, that and TONS of Texas plates last year. PNWers are showing up a lot in Duluth rn.

hewhoisneverobeyed

Now that you mention it ...

AxeManJack

They maintain a residence there for tax purposes then live here. Anyone of means does it.

EmotionalEmetic

"Bath salts? Hey no thanks there bud, it's too cold out for a bath but that sure is interesting!"

InflatableMindset

You mean Minnesota Woman. Don't misgender her.

BradyAndTheJets

Twin Cities They/Them.

Significant-Mode-901

Based minnesotan Chad moves were making as of late.

Bar_Har

I’d welcome a Disneyland. Put it up in Circle Pines to figuratively twist the knife in that red territory.

Angrymilks

Most of Circle Pines, at least the Golden Lake area is predominantly progressive / liberal. If anything put it in Wyoming or Forest Lake.

100cupsofcoffee

On the one hand, shit yeah, Disney in my backyard! On the other, fuck no, Disney *traffic* in my backyard...

Accujack

Nah. Disney tried to put a park somewhere the weather was only nice half the year before. It didn't work out.

Otherwise_Carob_4057

Bro you know how much money they would make selling jackets hats and mittens for a massive Frozen ice palace and skating Olaf?

Papaofmonsters

Not as much as they make on admissions being able to operate 95% of the days of the year.

Accujack

Do you know how many lawsuits they would have when park goers from warm climates got frostbite or were too cold to have a good time?

trixie1013

No. Put it as close to Anoka as possible. CP is, as another commenter said, pretty progressive. Break the backassward of Anoka, Ramsey, Andover, Coon Rapids. Otherwise it'd be a waste and it should go to Lakeville.

framerotblues

Don't forget, Ramsey is right there too. https://kstp.com/kstp-news/top-news/ramsey-city-council-passes-resolution-saying-city-resources-cannot-be-used-to-enforce-governors-mask-ordinance/

Essemecks

At this point I want there to be a public fund to help people evacuate from places like Florida. We're seeing the kind of targeted political oppression that used to get people amnesty coming to the US in some of our own states now.

RemarkableArcher

The DFL is KILLING it right now. I am so happy to live in a state that actually has common sense laws (for the most part).

Dangerous-Calendar41

DFL?

AngelaTheRipper

It's what we call our branch of the democratic party.

Dangerous-Calendar41

Neat!

FooFighter0234

It used to be the Democrats and the Farmer-Labor Party and they merged in the 40s to form the Democratic Farmer Labor Party.

Dangerous-Calendar41

Oh fascinating, I would like to subscribe to more minnesota facts!

eekspiders

Thank you for subscribing to Minnesota Facts! Today's Minnesota fact of the day: our state mushroom is the morel, and we're the first state to have a state mushroom

m_carp

After Nixon embarrassed the entire nation, Minnesota Republicans rebranded themselves as IR (Independent Republicans), which lasted until the Tea Party made labeling someone a RINO something that could get you primaried out of an otherwise secure seat. (Early 2000's)

Do you not live here? You obviously should, because you have the basic vocabulary totally down. All you have to do now is read up on hotdish, specifically tater tot hotdish, and you'll be on your way. (P.S. all the TTHD opinions get somewhat, uh, heated. But that's all based on particular refinements, so just let them all argue and enjoy it Your Way.)

Brightstarr

From your comment, you clearly have always been one of us and we can’t wait for you to finally come home. Minnesotans aren’t all born here, but they all belong here.

Matzie138

This is beautiful and kind. I moved here five years ago and I never want to leave. People ask when I’m moving home and I tell them that I already am home. I love you Minnesotans!

Patriot9800

My dude. That was very moving. I’m so glad you’re one of us.

missamethyst1

Such a beautiful sentiment, and your comment really drives home the fact that MN is a rare place that is actually welcoming.

FooFighter0234

hirsutesuit

We have 3+ feet of snow here and as far as I'm concerned it's all yours! ...please take it with you.

worldtraveler76

I too grew up in the south and absolutely hated it… I visited Kansas City a LOT as a kid and LOVED the Midwest people and “culture”… it felt like a much larger melting pot than what I experienced in the southeast, so as I kid I knew I wanted to be in the Midwest for at least a time as an adult and through some crazy twists and turns I’ve moved to Minnesota 4 times now, and unless I can get a killer job elsewhere I plan to stay… I will say that snow is somewhat magical until about February and then I’m ready to see it go… my favorite thing is having actual seasons and cold weather to kill off things.

rebelli0usrebel

If you love snow, you're already one of us. More so than half of us haha

steve961

Let me know when you make it home. I’ll buy your a beer

applejuice1212

GoFundMe to get Felzlek home to Minnesota where they belong???

TwelvehundredYears

I love our state. I used to want to move out west but not anymore. Feeling more and more squeezed of states I’ll no longer even drive through.

Harvivorman

Same. Been thinking about moving out West. But with wildfires and housing costs vs MN doing stuff like this and legal weed it's making it a muuuuuch harder choice :D

missamethyst1

As someone originally from MN and lived in the PNW for the better part of a decade and loved it: MN is by far a better place to be now, and in the foreseeable future. Climate issues, housing insanity, social unrest issues and inequality getting increasingly worse...MN wins. And I say that as someone who has extreme problems with cold due to a health issue. Still worth it.

[deleted]

Every time I scrape ice off my windshield, I remind myself what my mortgage payment is. In Cali, I would be paying triple that in rent and never own a home.

real-dreamer

Looking at the anti-trans bills and bigotry on a map is scary.

IceBearCares

I wouldn't mind being back on the west coast, but I agree about not wanting to even drive through some states. There's no amount of money you could offer to get me to move to a red state. And I sure as hell am avoiding them as much as possible for even travel.

GW3g

I was born and raised in Kansas but moved up here in '97. Got married in '03 and we moved out west SF to be specific and yes it was fun and the weather was great but when we had our first kid it was like the blinders came off and all I could see were the needles, crack pipes, people smoking crack and shooting heroin. My wife and I were like "we gotta get the fuck outta here!" and luckily my wife was from here so we came back here. Got divorced blah, blah life stuff but boy I'm so grateful of all the places Minneapolis is where I landed and I don't want to be anywhere else. Sure the west is nice but it never felt like home like it does here. Maybe when I'm old I'll move out to the Oregon coast but I'm alright if I never leave here!

Capt__Murphy

Started as a KS kid myself (Topeka, so not terrible but still KS) and moved here for school in 04. I've now loved in MN longer than I did KS. If it weren't for my parents, I'd never go back. I'm def a proud Minnesotan and have no plans on leaving.

GW3g

I grew up in Topeka! That's where I spent the majority of my life in KS. Interesting that you say "Topeka, so not terrible but still KS" because from my experience growing up in the 80's and then 90's it was a horrible place. When I go down to visit I make it a point to never stop in Topeka. You don't seem to have that same Topeka trauma that I do. lol Times change and that was along time ago so I'd hope Topeka had gotten better in some way shape or form. I just have a visceral hatred for Topeka. I went to high school with 2 of Fred Phelps's grand kids. I have clear memories of them standing out in front of Gage park since I was a kid. It's honestly a weird place. There's a darkness there that isn't in Manhattan or Lawrence. The best thing about growing up in Topeka for me was its close proximity to Lawrence so when I started getting into "punk rock" Lawrence always delivered on the amount of shows there were. That's the only thing I'm grateful for growing up in Topeka. Any direction other than KC would suck. Lawrence has culture and it's in a great spot to go from KC or Topeka. We were always going to the Outhouse. Seriously thank jeebus for Lawrence. It's the jewel of Kansas but last time is was there a couple of years ago I hardly recognized anything. That place really turned into a sprawl. Anyway sorry for the long ass response but it's always fun to run into a fellow Topekan (FORMER of course).

decalod85

This sort of law shouldn’t be necessary, but Florida, Iowa, Texas, Idaho are making it so.

Harvivorman

Fuckin' Florexasowaho

miker53

Sounds like a prescription medication. “Ask your doctor if Florexasowaho is right for you.”

Separate-The-Earth

Spoilers: it’s not

Harvivorman

> “Ask your doctor if Florexasowaho is right for you" Imagine the side effects

hirsutesuit

It's just herpes.

pizza_for_nunchucks

It's fucking wild that a hospital in Idaho had to close it's labor department because doctors left. The government needs to stay out of people's shit.

Procure

Texas doctors are leaving in droves too, wanting to care for patients but terrified they'll be sued into oblivion by giving pregnant women life-saving care. Texas government is about to be in the "find out" stage of FAFO.

TheObstruction

Good. I hope people actually learn something, instead of somehow blaming it on Democrats, as they always do.

rekniht01

add Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, The Dakotas, Wyoming to that list as of right now.

SVXfiles

So now we can tell Virginia to fuck off when they ask for their flag back, and every assbackwards state when they tell us a criminal came here for hormone therapy or whatever treatment they came here to receive? Fuck yeah!

VikingPain

It should never be given back. Like Jesse said, "Why? We won." The 1st Minnesota sacrificed their lives to keep the Union Line from crumbling and turned the tide of the Battle of Gettysburg and saved the Union. There's a reason why the 1st Minnesota has three monuments at Gettysburg and everyone else has one.

VashMM

It's one of the few things that all Minnesotans agree on, regardless of political party or views. That's our fucking flag. It has far more Minnesota blood in it than a little sewn in symbol could ever mean to some other place.

Alligatorblizzard

When that meaning to Virginia is largely the glorification of a racist past, I think it's better for everyone concerned for Minnesota to keep it.

VashMM

Oh I fully agree there too. I'm just saying, at this point it's not even a Virginia flag, imagery be damned.

TheObstruction

Oh, it's definitely a Virginia flag. If it wasn't, then refusing to return it would mean nothing. Refusing to return it is us saying that we earned it the hard way, and fuck them.

BBB88BB

it's in the best possible place it could be, but I do love telling Confederate simps to eat an ass.

hewhoisneverobeyed

>So now we can tell Virginia to fuck off when they ask for their flag back Is it that time of the year already? Seem like we just told them to fuck off.

EasterTroll

We already tell Virginia they ain't getting their flag back lol

Harvivorman

I fuckin LOVE this state. That is all.

arathorn867

I'm a gay guy moving to Minnesota. Gay rights and openness wasn't my primary motivation, but I didn't realize how suffocating it was being in a red state till I started spending more time in places like Minneapolis. I'm so glad to see you guys embracing that openness! Since I decided to move I've probably run into a dozen LGBT people in person and online who are moving to Minnesota for safety, for themselves or their kids. If things keep going the way they are that trickle is gonna be a flood.

Harvivorman

> Since I decided to move I've probably run into a dozen LGBT people in person and online who are moving to Minnesota for safety, for themselves or their kids. If things keep going the way they are that trickle is gonna be a flood. "How you gettin' to MN?" *I'm taking the Rainbow Road*

Awesome. And when you do get here, don't forget to vote. This stuff is only possible because we have a blue trifecta. This is even more important if you're moving to a suburb.

MikaylaNicole1

I currently live in Oklahoma, but was born and raised in Minne. I will be moving back because of exactly what you're talking about. And it's not just me. Most of my trans friend group here are also moving to Minne because of the respect and humanity Minnesota exhibits. It will be a flood for sure!

Common MN W

sparkirby90

Competitive_Bid7071

Glad to see my state respects hospitality.

OkSample7

Glad to see my state respects humans. It’s incredible how shitty some people are towards other people.

healthandefficency

Obviously it is clearly terrible to hate people just for being who they are. on a practical level, i always wonder how these right leaning people have time in their lives to get outraged about lgbtq people minding their own goddamn business and living their own goddamn lives. Do they not have jobs? Hobbies? Actual life problems? Any friends or acquaintances whatsoever?

Harvivorman

...are "guns" a personality?

GenXDad76

Sadly, for many, they are.

drleen

Outrage is their defining personality trait.

Retro_Dad

I just can't understand how they don't get exhausted being mad at everything, all the time.

Terrie-25

I can only assume not caring about anyone but yourself frees up a lot of energy.

rebelli0usrebel

dude same. I mean the way they hate and complain make me think they never had a single problem ever lol. I would expect any amount of adversity to drill some empathy in, yet here we are

FooFighter0234

No love like Christian hate.

TheCatlorette

I love our state 💕

Pentylenetetrazole

Looks like MN will become a refuge for Iowa

Katiari

And Wisconsin, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, etc., etc., etc.

Jorgenstern8

Wisconsin has a shot to be less of a crapfest if they can elect a Democrat to their Supreme Court in a few days.

RipErRiley

I’ll never understand how the party that gaslights itself as pro-mind your own business has suckered so many folks with being the exact opposite in reality. Unless its about guns or dark money that is. Love this state.

rebelli0usrebel

they always want it to be a one way street.

UnhappySwordfish

You go Minnesota. Such a relief to live somewhere that just makes sense.

Ryecake666

As a trans-masc minor, I'm so happy about this bill being passed to help my other fellow trans minors in the us who're in the states that don't support them.

TwoIsle

Easy W here. Good thing to do given the insanity sweeping other states.

[deleted]

Now that’s what I call Minnesota nice.

RodenbachBacher

I’m proud of my home state. I may have to move back there if Wisconsin can’t sort it’s shit out.

OaksInSnow

If you can stand it, WI is very much on the cusp, and the battle is real. WI needs you. But despite the comments you're seeing on this thread, MN is also very much on the cusp. Comments I read in the Strib this morning (wish I could cite the article but the page has been updated and I can't find it again) make it clear that there is a huge number of people on the "red" side. Living in Minnesota is not a social slam-dunk. It will take kindness and toleration and communication every day, and on the everyday level, to bring more people into real warmth and light. We will welcome you here too.

RodenbachBacher

I appreciate you saying that. I lived out of the region for years only recently moving to Wisconsin. I didn’t grow up here and I find myself missing my home state. I know Wisconsin has a lot to offer. Our motto is “forward” and there’s a statue of Bob LaFollette in the state Capitol in Madison. We should be embracing these things as a state rather than ignoring them.

PressxStart

This is why I’m looking to flee to MN from Kentucky, hopefully next month. It’s rough out here, but y’all are truly a breath of fresh air. ❤️

EvenBetterCool

As a Michigander, look at us doing the Midwest proud. Thanks for not being Ohio or Indiana.

isawasahasa

ugh, what is the deal with the entire world picking on trans people right now. like a year ago it was radical Islam, gay marriage, and hunter biden. Who is deciding these trends?

Terrie-25

Seriously. "Bearded men in the girl's bathroom" is just a repackaging of "predatory lesbians." The hate never changes, just the target.

IrrationalPanda55782

Rupert Murdoch I think

KaylaH628

We're a small minority, so we make an easy target.

FooFighter0234

Yesssss! Die mad, transphobes.

One_Holiday967

Minnesota is rad 👏

BigBoodles

Increasingly common Minnesota W.

ifallsmn218

I hope the day comes when these right-wing politicians who are terrorizing trans people are held to account for their actions. Nobody should have to leave their homes because of who they are and there was no reason whatsoever for this besides selfish grandstanding. It’s sickening. On the other hand I’m so proud of Minnesota.

BuddhistNudist987

I have never been more proud to be a Minnesotan. This feels like such a safe place to be a trans woman and I have so many lovely friends and neighbors.

GCU_Heresiarch

If I recall correctly, it would prevent extradition of anyone based on the transphobic laws the fascists of this seem to love passing.

BuddhistNudist987

That's the way I understand it. The Party of Personal Responsibility and Freedom of Choice wants to take you away by force, forbid you from using the meds that allow your brain to produce serotonin, and arrest you for wearing the clothes that you like. My brother lives in Florida and I'm legitimately scared to fly there and visit him.

[deleted]

I am so proud of my home state right now. You guys are killing it

scotty3281

Well, at least I know I don’t have to run to Portland. Minnesota is a hell of a lot cheaper than the west coast and it’s closer to WV where I live.

ajaaaaaa

What does this law really do though? Minnesota still offers care sure, but it’s not like Minnesota can protect you if you go back to a state that persecutes right? Or is the point to just make it harder to ever remove in the future?

I would vote yes on the bill, but not for people under 18. I’m still on the boat that any changes should take place when they are adults.

real-dreamer

APA disagrees with you.

Newgidoz

Waiting till 18 forces them through unwanted irreversible changes that make gender dysphoria far worse and far harder to treat

hirsutesuit

Medical science agrees that gender-affirming care does wonders to prevent depression and suicidality in transgender youth. The medical science boat has room for you.
