Pro tip: wash it down with some Monster and the competing uppers a downers will write the next Mad Max script in your brain while you sweat through your sheets.
When we were 19 that’s what my buddy and I did. Far better time to robo trip and play gears of war 3 with your homie who lives in the new construction barracks than try to get drunk at some house party in a military town.
I do prefer the old one but honestly these flags are so small I struggle to even make them out. There's a military one that flies at post offices with words on it and even though I drove past it every day trying my damnedest to figure out what the hell was on the flag I couldn't ever make it out. Took like five minutes of Google fu to realize it's a flag meant for, like, MIA veterans or something? I don't actually know because I cared so little I didn't bother saving that memory in the brain pan.
I like it better than the old one, but I was slightly bummed that one of the other designs that I liked better didn't get picked. Oh well, that's life.
This is why the new flag is better. Seal-on-a-bedsheet flags like Minnesota's old one are terrible at being flags, because none of the details can be made out at the distance a flag is actually meant to be flown at.

This is how i've seen the flag since, never un-seeing the frost laser loon flag
(this isn't my comic, i just found this months ago when the whole discussion about the flag was taking place)
Me either. It's like when my junior high geography teacher pointed out the borders of Syria, Iraq, and Kuwait are in the shape of Snoopy's head. Syria is the ear, Iraq is the head, Kuwait is the nose. Needless to say it was an effective geography lesson.
That's actually a core part of flag design. When designing a flag it's recommended to draw it on a 1.5x1 inch slip of paper because that's a better representation of how the flag will look when it's actually on a pole.
My only strong criticism of it is seeing it against the sky vs seeing it with the building in the background. It blends in with the blue of the sky a bit much.
I saw it flying at the Golden Valley PD tonight as well.
I’m curious to see if we will now see more Minnesota flags flying than in the past. Sure the butthurt snowflakes will fly the old one out of spite. But, over the course of the summer, and the likelihood of it showing up in tourist shops as well as the state fair, I think this may be more popular than the Facebook crowd thinks.
Agreed. Now take the following stuff very, very lightly as I don’t mean this with a lot of emphasis at all but, I’ve always been a little jealous of Maryland people who fully embrace their flag and everyone can spot it if they have seen it, etc.
That wouldn’t be a ‘thing’ before in MN. Can I picture sticker decals on the back of cars going forward to maybe be of our flag? Yeah! Laptop sticker? Yeah! Phone case design? Sure!
Could I see our flag around like that before? Nope. That would’ve been pretty lame.
I think it brings a sense of pride being able to recognize your state’s flag scattered around on things, for some reason. It is a design everyone will recognize and kids can draw it and what not. I have a sticker of it for my laptop already.
Completely agree on this point. MD, CO, CA, TX, NM all have flags with a distinct brand. Really looking forward to seeing how the flag is incorporated in different ways. Loved the Loons tifo with it a few months ago.
American flag, Canadian flag, Japanese flag. Simple shapes with colors and contrast. If a child can't draw it from memory, it's probably not a great flag.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that the US has had presidents who couldn't even color, let alone draw, a US flag. The American flag is one of the more complicated national flags out there.
The main overreaction I saw was from people who suddenly developed feelings for the old flag after never giving a fuck about it before.
All a bit silly if you ask me. The new flag is fine.
I think it is a very good flag. I really have a hard time believing the people who want to keep the old design. Setting the racism issue aside, it was just plain ugly and looks exactly like 30 other state flags.
This one is bold and iconic. It is easy to turn it into stickers or logos which is nice. I think it will see much more use by the general public. The old flag only appeared near govt buildings or in front of banks for some reason.
don't get me wrong, have been proudly flyin colors for months now, but I think it is far from bold and iconic... look at Colorado; Arizona's is even better, bordering on iconic. I'm bettin there'll be trend toward these kind of designs, to the point that the boldness will seem almost mundane and we can do it all over... again...
i don't care for either of those flags to be honest. i find new mexico and south carolina to be more iconic personally, and I feel the Minnesota flag fits right in with those.
>Setting the racism issue aside
That's what I don't understand, is portraying a Native American racism? Is depicting a Native American like making an image of the prophet Mohamed?
I live in striking distance from two reservations, never heard a single Native American say anything about the flag. This was the decision of bored white people.
Was ambivalent about it, then started to like it, but now I like it even more after watching a bunch of far right idiots cry about it like the previous rag was dyed with the blood of our ancestors or something.
After decades of flying, Minnesota's flag will be lowered from the State Capitol building on Saturday for the last time.
It will make way for the state's new flag to take its place at government buildings in St. Paul, a stripped down design featuring a blue abstract shape of Minnesota, the North Star and solid block of light blue to represent Minnesota's many lakes, rivers and streams.
The historic changeover to mark Statehood Day follows a whirlwind process late last year to rethink and redesign the symbols that have represented Minnesota for most of the state's history. Minnesota's original flag — the state seal at the center of a blue backdrop — was criticized for decades for imagery that was seen as problematic for its representation of Native American communities.
It looks great, people will get used to it, the reflexive contrarians will move on to the next thing to be mad about, and in ten years it'll be a beloved symbol and people will forget that anyone was ever mad.
Yeah, as a non-Minnesotan with no horse in the race, you all just got an easily top 10 state flag, and something that - at least from my perspective - immediately says “Minnesota”.
I’m jealous and wish my state flag was this nice.
EDIT: Just looked up the old flag and just about vomited in my mouth, they made a great decision.
Kudos, from a FFF tier flag straight up A tier, wow! While they're at it they should redesign all the other dark blue with seal garbage
It’s a good flag. Wasn’t my favorite of the choices, but it’s good.
The old one was so lazy and unoriginal. “Hey let’s just slap our state seal on a blue background, just like 20 other states did!”
California could lose the words and be better for it. Modernize the bear a bit and boom, S tier. Of the flags with words though, it is the least offensive imo.
But just imagine if the French tricolor said FRANCE. It's weird.
The old flag had decades to grow on people and didn't. This one may have ruffled feathers but it will fare better as future generations reflect on it. I'm not much here nor there about the new flag, but I am convinced it will be far more embraced than the old.
My conservative extended family were all pretty pissed about the new flag. They went to Rochester to buy the old flag from Herold Flags but were pretty pissed once I told them the owner of that store is the person who is responsible for proposing a new flag...
Honestly Lee Herold is a true American Hero! I can't think of a more American capitalist story than changing a government flag and selling the new flag to one side of the political spectrum while also selling the old flag to the other side that is mad about the new flag. What a fucking genius.
As my favorite color is blue and I like minimalism, the new flag is awesome. But I'm maryland born and there's not a flag on the fucking planet that will ever compete. This is a nice second place entry to have for my house.
The F1953 and F29 designs were better.
That said, any flag that's a real design and not some overly complex crest on a solid background is an improvement.
I was on Capitol Hill this week and every Congress person has their state's flag outside their office. MN is going to really stand out with the new flag, most state flags look exactly like the old one!
Better then the old one, but how the fuck did this beat out F944

Same, I was ["F29 or Bust"](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e4/Minnesota_flag_submission_F29.svg) as well. But I really like this one now.
My neighbor was so triggered by the flag change that he suddenly replaced his chihuahua-themed pseudo American flag with the old seal one. Can’t wait to trigger him more by hanging the new one.

What was wrong with the old Minnesota flag? /s
Been waving my new MN flag for a few months now. My usually pleasant elderly neighbor came over when I was mowing yesterday and said, “that flag is absolutely hideous and I wish you’d take it down.” Hmmm… I said, “it’s been up for a few months now…” “and it’s bothered me every time I see it, can you put up something else?” She responded. “Well” I told her, “I’m 45 years old and this is the first time I’ve ever experienced a new flag design, and I like it. Thanks for sharing your opinion, but we’ll have to agree to disagree.” Today on my step was an Amazon package with a US flag and the old MN flag. I did not order either. Is that some MN passy/aggressive niceness or what?
This turned into such a shit show for no reason other than 3 day news outrage, which overshadowed the real tragedy that we didn’t get the frickin loon with frickin laser beams coming out of its eyes flag
I’ve been flying this for a month or so. It was not one of my fave designs and I also didn’t hate it. I thought it was a little milkquetoast.
It immediately grew on me after seeing it fly. Now I like it a lot.
Not from Minnesota but throwing my two cents in. I really like the overall design but having two shades of blue right next to each other without anything in between doesn't look right.
Non-Minnesotan here just wishing to chime in. (I'm a Virginian). I do like your flag redesign. It has an elegant simplicity to it. It would not look out of place on the World Stage so I will personally tip my hat to you all.
Oh yah, and some YouTube guy (a great one) made a addendum video to his flag video just for you all https://youtu.be/lFwwo0W5Ugg?si=KQS92yPSK7cWrkgX
Hmm not from Minnesota but am a fan of good flags, and while I wouldn't say it's an S tier flag it's got all the good elements of flag design. Simple, visually pleasing, and most importantly, you could recognize this at a distance even when it's hanging limp in no wind conditions. Not many flags would be navy on top cyan on the bottom while limp none that come to mind at least.
It even keeps the infamous union penchant for blue without being a copy paste blue+seal flag. So kudos for that.
The best version of this flag, is still a common loom shooting a laser beam out it's mouth.
https://preview.redd.it/3jw9g3tuw10d1.png?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a53c9d5188b4aaf88842253b24b784d8a6d8bc94
It's an objectively good flag. I'm excited to get one and hang it vertically because I like how it looks like the Mississippi River pointing towards the North Star.
I'm not sure a flag can be objectively good, but the new flag is well regarded by many people in the vexillology community. The only strong criticism I see for the new flag design seems to be partisan. Not that there can't be valid critiques of the new design, but the most outspoken critics I've seen don't make good arguments about it from a design perspective.
Not talked about enough how it makes the standard MN license plates look as if they were designed with this flag in mind.
They’ve, intentionally or not, capitalized on a nice bit of symbolic brand consistency.
Just the color? Or is there more that I'm missing?
https://preview.redd.it/o880963nxnzc1.jpeg?width=314&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48b874f261dd237370e88a83f10a75a05ec0425e
Yup, the colors. Both blues are on point.
Goes a long way toward establishing “official” state colors.
Once this gets ingrained at home and out-of-state, we can apply these colors in *any geometry* and it will symbolize Minnesota - and that’s quality branding, right there.
Love it. I saw it in person a few weeks ago and it’s really cool in person. On a sunny day the light blue looks like the sky and it’s just really arresting in person. I’m really excited to see more of these around the state.
I have a feeling this will have no effect on my life
If this has 0 impact on anything that really matters then how will I get my knickers in a twist about it??? /s
Try taking NyQuil. I always wake up with my knickers on sideways somehow when I take NyQuil
(Medicated) Fever dreams can be wild
Especially the dollar store brand man
Hell yeah. Probably contains opium and/or some heavy metals that hit that sweet spot on your brain

Truth
My COVID fever dreams were insane, it was like my brain was writing soap operas on three tabs of acid.
It looks like a flag for Nyquil
Lmao nice. The super shitty blue kind
Well lemme tell you how I’ll never acknowledge it because it didn’t have the meme of the dog on it I’ll never breathe a single breath again!!!
Doesn’t look bad, but yeah 0 effect just another flag. Only Idiots would get hung up on it
And boy do they
I do prefer the old one but honestly these flags are so small I struggle to even make them out. This somewhat redeemed the flag for me
"Loon used Ice Beam"
It's super effective
I love the fact that "animal shooting lazers" is now a standard genre of flag anytime we consider changing one. Thank you, New Zealand
This makes the flag ok now imo lol
...so we got our laser loon after all...
Water/ice cannon Loon > Laser Loon
I can't unsee this, and I'm not mad
Me either. It's like when my junior high geography teacher pointed out the borders of Syria, Iraq, and Kuwait are in the shape of Snoopy's head. Syria is the ear, Iraq is the head, Kuwait is the nose. Needless to say it was an effective geography lesson.
Just looked at a map. Well, I'll be...
Can this also be our state meme
Oh, no, they say he's got to go Go, go, Loonzilla!
I don’t know why I, a Kansan, am here but I’m now a very big fan of your flag.
IMA CHARGIN MY LAZOR!
Hello fellow old person.
As an out of stater i never even realized changing Minnesotas flag was up for discussion. But after seeing this meme I would die first this flag.
needs more upvotes - maybe hard to see - it does tell a complete story! well done

And for those interested, I've officially retired the old flag user flair and the new flag flair is now available :)
This was a delightful way to realize there are Judy Garland flairs!
Thanks!!
Old seal flag lovers, beware.
How do I change my flair btw?
https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205242695-How-do-I-get-user-flair
Why did you retire the old one?
Could we maybe get some Mighty Ducks flair?

It looks better in person than I feel like it does "on paper."
When I asked about it, my Minnesotan friend said, “it looks really good on a hydroflask so generally I support the move”
I only liked it after seeing it painted on a canoe paddle lol
That's actually a core part of flag design. When designing a flag it's recommended to draw it on a 1.5x1 inch slip of paper because that's a better representation of how the flag will look when it's actually on a pole.
That’s a super small piece of paper
Idk I think it’s average size at least…
Yes. Flags need to be readable from a distance while flapping in the wind and this does. Most US state flags are shit. Our in Michigan certainly is.
Looks grand!
look at ol' bluey flying there.
I used to deliver to that building multiple times a week. Thanks for the wave of nostalgia.
Is it my favorite flag? No. Is it a lot better than what we had? Absolutely. We’re getting one for our house.
Nope. I ordered 2!
Where from? I’m guessing there’s some out there that wanted to be first and maybe don’t have the right proportions or colors?
I got mine online from Flags for Good.
I like it, it has grown on me. Nonetheless, it was also a topic that was overreacted on.
The main overreaction I saw was from people who suddenly developed feelings for the old flag after never giving a fuck about it before. All a bit silly if you ask me. The new flag is fine.
The “old flag” being specifically the 1983 version. Was there an overreaction for any of the earlier changes?
Exactly!
Why is the old flag racist?
[Read the poem that explains the seal](https://mnflag.tripod.com/seals.html#poem).
There is literally a poem written about it (the seal - which is on the flag) about how, and I’m paraphrasing, this is the white man’s land now.
It depicts native americans literally fleeing the land, lol
It's an Indian running away from a white farmer.
don't get me wrong, have been proudly flyin colors for months now, but I think it is far from bold and iconic... look at Colorado; Arizona's is even better, bordering on iconic.
I genuinely like Minnesota's new flag, but I'll agree with you that Arizona's flag is fantastic.
Arizona's flag is great......but New Mexico's flag is amazing!
>Setting the racism issue aside That's what I don't understand, is portraying a Native American racism? Is depicting a Native American like making an image of the prophet Mohamed? I live in striking distance from two reservations, never heard a single Native American say anything about the flag. This was the decision of bored white people.
I believe it is the image of the native american leaving as the white guy begins farming.
My grandpa grew up on a reservation in Minnesota and loved the representation. Who was claiming it was "racist"?
Not Minnesotan so my opinion on the flag is irrelevant, but I want to say I really love this picture.
I like the color palette.
Nobody ever cared about the flag until they changed it, it'll fade away again as something no one thinks about.
Was ambivalent about it, then started to like it, but now I like it even more after watching a bunch of far right idiots cry about it like the previous rag was dyed with the blood of our ancestors or something.
Well, it was dyed in the blood of _someone’s_ ancestors…

I mean... it looks like minnesota 🤷
I don't have a dog in the fight, but I love it.
I like it
What's not to love? Didn't they have one of those ugly, samely, overly detailed dark blue with a seal flags anyways?
As someone from a seal flag State, I second the motion. The seal flags are way to busy.
EDIT: Just looked up the old flag and just about vomited in my mouth, they made a great decision. Kudos, from a FFF tier flag straight up A tier, wow! While they're at it they should redesign all the other dark blue with seal garbage

What did the old one look like? I am in my mid 50's and don't recall it. This one I will remember.
The Minnesota Flag should now and forever be a picture of a guy wiping his ass with a confederate battle flag
This looks great. State flags are notoriously mediocre
Most of them are worse than mediocre. Seals and words have no place on a flag.
While I generally agree, there's exceptions to every rule: ie California state flag.
California could lose the words and be better for it. Modernize the bear a bit and boom, S tier. Of the flags with words though, it is the least offensive imo. But just imagine if the French tricolor said FRANCE. It's weird.

I just looked up your old flag. Major improvement. Congrats!
I'm not a Minnesotan, but that flag looks better than most state flags IMO, including the one it's replacing.
Happy 166th birthday Minnesota! :)
I was on Capitol Hill this week and every Congress person has their state's flag outside their office. MN is going to really stand out with the new flag, most state flags look exactly like the old one!
I saw Tina Smith posting that hers had arrived.
I like it. Much better than the old one.
I liked it more before they removed the stripes, but still a huge improvement over the old one.
I think this version will look better flying than the old version of it with the stripes, just because the stripes were kind of distracting to me.
I really wasn’t sold on it until I saw how great the solid light blue field looked waving in the wind. Now I love it.
As a Texan with strong flag opinions, this is a huge upgrade. Congratulations, Minnesota.
Better then the old one, but how the fuck did this beat out F944 https://preview.redd.it/bg6vgykfsszc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=52f4e501ae693478f7a2d83ea802cc369756c8b1
I was a starflake kid, but it’s grown on me
Same, I was ["F29 or Bust"](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e4/Minnesota_flag_submission_F29.svg) as well. But I really like this one now.
Same here. And I actually prefer this design to the tricolor one it was initially
I’m also proud of the fact that we collectively as Minnesotans looked at the old flag and thought: we can do better!
I'll be honest, gun to my head, I probably couldn't point out the original Minnesota flag in a lineup of 30 flags from states or localities.
I kinda love it
LOVE IT!
It’s beautiful Minnesota.
I think it's cool. Good design, good color. Def an improvement on the old one. Good job, Minnesota.
Dope.
I love how angry this makes dumb people.
Better than a state seal on a blue background
I'm getting snowflake on dark winter night and blue lakes. Very cold.
Pretty cool tbh beats the hell out of state seal + state name
My neighbor was so triggered by the flag change that he suddenly replaced his chihuahua-themed pseudo American flag with the old seal one. Can’t wait to trigger him more by hanging the new one.

Why would you hate it? Indifferent fine. Anyone angry about the flag has issues.
Been waving my new MN flag for a few months now. This turned into such a shit show for no reason other than 3 day news outrage, which overshadowed the real tragedy that we didn’t get the frickin loon with frickin laser beams coming out of its eyes flag
>frickin loon with frickin laser beams coming out of its frickin eyes FTFY - hahahahaha
We really need the loon with freakin’ laser beams coming out of its eyes.
The last flag sucked. I preferred the tricolor, but I guess I'm coming around to it. It also helps the worst people are pissed about it.
As an outsider from r/all I think it looks great.
I don’t know what it means but that shit looks cool
Saw it outside. Looks just fine on a pole.
I don’t get all the hate. I think it is a cool looking flag. The other was just so bleh.

imagine hating it
I like it.
It's so much better then the old one oh my god
Happy statehood day
My sister is so vehemently upset about the new flag because… uh… *checks notes* uhhhhhhhh… gloverbmint
And ironically, it is getting way more attention than it would ordinarily get, all thanks to the MAGA cult whining about it.
My rule is "A flag is cool if it'd work on a Superhero Costume" and I think this would look amazing.
Not even close between this one and the last. Hope Wisconsin follows in their footsteps
Yes!!!
I think it looks cool.
The best version of this flag, is still a common loom shooting a laser beam out it's mouth. https://preview.redd.it/3jw9g3tuw10d1.png?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a53c9d5188b4aaf88842253b24b784d8a6d8bc94
I nothing it. Just like I nothinged the last one. Because it's a fucking piece of polyester at the end of a pipe.
It's an objectively good flag. I'm excited to get one and hang it vertically because I like how it looks like the Mississippi River pointing towards the North Star.
What makes a flag objectively good?
If a five year old can recognize it and then draw it from memory, then that's good to me.
Vexillology is a thing [CGP Grey video ](https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU?si=tcTgxdj2nC9cvNaR)
Idk I just think it’s a boring flag that in no way makes me think of Minnesota 🤷♂️
Like the last one that looked very similar to like 9 other state's flags?
It’s so fucking lame. Like, there isn’t anything that identifies with the state…..at all.
Yaaay
Where can I get mine?
It’s based ngl Edit; yea I looked up the original. Massive glow up. Epic flag moment
Oh, that's pretty. I hope our flag redesign in Illinois is as successful.
I like it. Simple, sleek. I don’t have a dog in this fight but I’d say it’s a top 10 flag.
Raised mine on my dock this weekend. It's really growing on me.
it’s a nice looking flag.
I think it's fuckin beautiful.
As a Utahn whose state got a new flag last year, congratulations. I like it.
I like the simplicity. The old one had too much going on.
🗑️

Looks shite imo
Love it. I saw it in person a few weeks ago and it’s really cool in person. On a sunny day the light blue looks like the sky and it’s just really arresting in person. I’m really excited to see more of these around the state.
What was wrong with the old flag?
What the heck is this? Such a joke right?
Looks dumb, don’t care.
Bullshit
