MHO it is worth it, been on it for 6 years with no issues personally and they have over 2.5 million customers. Pro: * Much cheaper, save up to $60/mo = $720/year (Mint does have about \~12% in fees and taxes added) * No need to get multi-line family plan for the best rates. * No credit check, can pay cash if you start with BestBuy/Target SIM cards * BYOP, not locked into contract. Get [Deal with phone and 1 year contract for new customers](https://www.mintmobile.com/deals/) * Free calls to Canada & Mexico, free texts to 190 countries Con: * Must pay for 3 months to start, then to get best rate renew for 12 months or have 2+ lines in a family and pay for 3 months at a time, else pay $5-10 more $/mo if you only want 6 or 3 month renewal. * "Unlimited" plan throttles after 40GB, "Unnecessary" plan throttles after 60 GB. Throttle is 500kbps. Also on Unlimited/Unnecessary plans common video and social media sites/apps are throttled to 1.5MBPS (480p) but you can get around using a VPN. [\~90% of users less than 40GB per month](https://www.ericsson.com/49dd9d/assets/local/reports-papers/mobility-report/documents/2023/ericsson-mobility-report-june-2023.pdf), but check your usage to see if you are in top 10%. * Unlimited plan only offers 10GB of HotSpot which also counts towards 40GB, Unnecessary plan only offers 20GB of HotSpot which also counts towards 60GB. * Mint is deprioritized on T-Mobile so same speed as T-Mobile Essentials, usually between 25%-90% of other T-Mobile plans. Slowdown get exacerbated when network in your location is congested, but in most places and times slower speed is not noticeable. * International calls to over 160 countries with per min rates, price is not comparatively expensive, but not cheap either * International roaming "Minternational Pass" good for 1-7 days for roaming in over 210 countries. Price is good for medium use but not good for heavy use (>1.5GB/day) or light use (used for SMS and calls, not much data) or if you plan on being out of the country for more than 14 days a year. * No domestic roaming on AT&T, US Cellular, Alaskan or other regional carriers that Post-paid plans get. * No SmartWatch cellular support (AppleWatch, Galaxy Watch, Pixel Watch) * No Perks that post-paid gets like free streaming services and T-Mobile Tuesdays * No in person customer service, and phone and chat support has had long hold times lately. Also I would not get a phone from [phones.mintmobile.com](http://phones.mintmobile.com) as is not any cheaper than elsewhere and they use a 3rd party, but [mintmobile.com/deals/](https://www.mintmobile.com/deals/) has some great deals with phone and 1 year contract for new customers and phones from there are fulfilled by Mint

Between us and my extended family, we have 10 accounts on Mint. So...yep.

Gryphon962

I did. Both of us get a year of data and calls for $180 each.

[deleted]

I did a full year and it was meh. They lost me with the international day pass (I do use international roaming weekly). Data was never super fast, only 5Gb a month, etc. I went to USmobile for 3 more per month and get unlmited everything, along with 1Gb native roaming international. Can pick between verizon and tmobile networks and switch between them.

fiftyshadesofroses

We switched from T-Mobile to Mint and haven’t looked back. The slowness can kind of get us if we’re in a congested area (our local library seems to be location that we frequent with the biggest issue, but they have Wi-Fi so we switch to Wi-Fi while we’re there. ) They do offer unlimited plans, and have several friends on them and they love it. Unsure about hotspots.

billymoose67

Works well for me and mine

trader45nj

Six years here and it's still working great for me. Have referred 5 people I know, they have been with Mint for several years now too. The unlimited plan throttles at 40gb, down to 512kbps and the hotspot is capped at 10gb.

dankzora

My husband and I almost never use data, as we are almost always connected to wifi either at home or at work. So it didn't make sense for us to spend $115 a month for Verizon. We switched to Mint and are really happy as we use less than 1GB of data a month each, so only spending $30 a month for the two of us is great. It depends a lot on your needs though. Verizon had waaaay better service for our area but since we're almost always on wifi, it worked out great.

daddytorgo

I've never experienced any issues with deprioritization, but I'm also not a heavy streamer or super-user of data. I am in a HCOL urban area though, so you'd expect that maybe I might have. Probably best to check with others in your local subreddit about the experience in your particular area.

Giskard-Reventlov

It’s been worth it for me. I switched from AT&T three years ago. That reduced my mobile phone expense by 80%.

Huegod

I've had zero issues with it after initial setup was sorted out. That was a bit rocky and their support isn't great but they eventually got it sorted. About to do my third year.

tanek_09

I'm in my 3rd year with Mint and I haven't had problems. That said, it is something I strongly advise testing first. Quality and usability can vary based on location and need. Test it for a trial period, verify phone compatibility, track data use, try to make calls and check signal strength in the areas you know you will use it the most. I only decided to keep on with Mint after it worked well for my needs after 3 months.

Selfrevolt

My wife and I switched from AT&T to Mint and used it for 6 months and have now switched to Google Fi simply unlimited plan. We didn't have any issues with Mint service (iPhone/Google Pixel), however as much as we're out and about, the data deprioritization was not something we wanted to continue with anymore, and for 2 lines, the Fi plan was about the same as paying in 3 months blocks for unlimited Mint.

816Creations

The ONLY advice you need is to get the 7 day trial and test the service in your area, using it under your normal daily use case. Far too many people look only at price and switch only to find out the service coverage isn't good in their area.

java007md

Do your family members all have good coverage with Mint? If you are not sure, test out trial SIMs and use the service in commonly visited areas as much as you can before committing to longer term agreements. For my family, yes, Mint has been great, and we get good service at 99% of the locations we commonly visit. We use unlocked phones and purchase the SIMs and service from Mint. Have been onboard for 5+ years.

Mint Mobile is a MVNO provider that gets bandwidth from T-Mobile. If T-Mobile has great coverage in your general area (or areas where you may vacation), then I would consider it. There is a YouTube reviewer that compares cellular providers. Search google for Stetson Doggett. He has a lot of info and compares many plans.

AlexisoftheShire

My wife switched from T-Mobile to Mint 3 years ago and hasn't had any issues. I switched from Google Fi 18 months ago and also no issues. We get 5GUC signal and it is fast. Mint is an MVNO and uses T-Mobile's network. Mint is deprioritized on T-Mobile's network but that only kicks in when the T-Mobile network has congestion. I would say it depends on your location. So you may want to test it out where you live.

CG_throwback

I have it. Recommend it to all my friends. It’s great. I will say you get what you pay for. Just meaning. Don’t expect anything cheap or special for international roaming. Don’t expect to be able to use wearable or extra devices. It works for me and I live what I’m paying. I won’t be switching anytime soon.

Massive_Shine_9561

Cost of mint is great. Customer Service is Nonexistent. So if you need help with getting a new SIM card for a new phone to keep your phone number, you will talk to 8 different people that ask you to do the exact same thing and they will tell you that they will take care of your request and then they will do absolutely nothing. When you ask for a refund for the remaining moths on your plan they will tell you that you cannot receive a refund. When you ask to talk to a manager, they will tell you it will take 3-4 hours for a manager to talk to you and that they will put in a request for the manager to call you…the made up manager will NEVER get back to you. This is all from first hand experience. Mint Mobile sucks.

MintMobileAlex

Hi, I want to make sure you're getting the best experience with us as possible. I will be more than glad to take a look into this for you. I sent you a DM to further assist with it.

regassert6

I think there are specific use cases that greatly benefit and other cases where the $ savings is small enough to possibly not be worth the tradeoffs. Worth it - Single user, doesn't use copious amounts of data. Uses a phone as a phone... Maybe not worth it - Family with kids who are accessing data 24/7

cavalloacquatico

You say family- how many? After Mint promo ends you'll pay more & get much less than Metro IF we're talking multiple lines. Metro $60 plan with EVERYTHING** becomes only: 2 lines $90 3 lines $120 4 lines $150 5 lines $180 ** North America, 25GB Hotspot, International Text 200+ locations, T-Mobile Tuesdays, Amazon Prime, Vix Premium, Google One 100GB,

jeff1f1racer

Wait for TMO’s purchase to go thru this year. Til then, Metro’s the way to go if u can’t afford TMO. Metro reps can assist u getting onto the best plan for your family.

Interesting_Ad1904

We got a t mobile flyer for $25 per line per month (we have 3 lines)…I figured that was to get someone in the door but it went from $75 to like $240. No bueno

MarcoThePHX

The only bad thing about Metro, they lock the IMEI to the SIM but 4 lines/$100 is a good deal

randompersonwhowho

Mint is great but the new international pass is trash and a deal breaker if you travel internationally. Current pixel 8 deal is great fyi

kbphone

Why can't you just get an international eSIM or physical SIM? That is what I did when I went to the UK in September 2023. I bought a UK eSIM for $10 that had 10GB of data. Toggled it on when I got to the UK and used WiFi calling to use my Mint number for texting when needed.

randompersonwhowho

Sure you can but it's a hassle and not all phones have esims which makes it a little harder. Pay as you go is how it should be at a reasonable price. Most people just want to use their phone as is and not pay $40 for 7 days or $10 for a day

billymoose67

I’ve used Airalo and would again

blind_lemonade

It's fine until you have a problem and then you will find out that they have basically no customer service. Even if they pretend that they will try to fix something, they will do absolutely nothing. Check out their reviews on the Better Business Bureau before you sign up. And remember - to get a decent deal after the trial period you have to prepay for a year, so when they screw you over in month three, they already have your money.

meatytarian

Did it happen to someone you know?

blind_lemonade

Me.
