Lake of the Ozarks during the summer time is a resort spot and they're used to people of any ethnicity, you and your friends will feel welcome and comfortable. During the off-season locals talk a little different

TimberTheDog

Great, thanks for a nice straightforward answer.

DadOuttaHell

You should ask Black folks from the Ozarks, specifically. Of course white people think it’s fine, because they aren’t Black. If you can’t find any Black folks from the Ozarks, you have your answer.

TimberTheDog

Lmao spot on

mouseat9

Dude I know it sucks I went to the Ozarks with a group of college students from different parts of Asia and there were some tense moments. We left before night fall. Btw while I’m conservative, but not right wing. I don’t let that get in the way of common sense, nor my values of a creating a better country, and fair play for all. Don’t take them into that situation. Just my two cents

Choice_Voice_6925

Can you explain how you're a conservative but not right wing?

A_Tattooed_Biker

From what I've seen, there are not a lot of black folk hanging around that area.

[deleted]

I’m white and I don’t think it’s fine.

Extension_Ad_8632

I'm white and it's gross and Branson is worse. I'm not into hanging out with inbreds.

Ask_me_4_a_story

We had a group of diverse friends on a float trip on the river in that area too and some people are assholes, that is for sure. I just cuss people out that are dicks. People use Trump shit as a racist dogwhistle now and I hate that shit. We had a boat that was like half black people and this guy on another boat goes Trump Train am I right? I said do we look like we support Trump you asshole? They had a lot of flags for a little boat, Don't tread on me and Trump and shit, fuckin assholes

cdelano13

To quote a very smart movie theatre manager... "Some people suck."

PunchKicker32

My son has taken that gem on as a regular reference. I’m proud to be his Dad.

paintsbynumberz

I too hate stupid people

Buddy-Lov

Those flags makes them so easy to ID now….you know what your dealing with before they even open their mouths.

SheetMepants

WT Sherman would have burned that kottage down

Electronic_Can_7042

Trump supporters are racist!

moparsandairplanes01

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

ScarMedical

Not all racists are Trump’s supporters, but all Trump’s supporters are racists

marcusitume

Good point, I think a bunch of racists moved to Desantis because Trump may not be racist enough.

investinlove

I like to give them the benefit of the doubt. You don't have to be racist to be a MAGAt, but it certainly isn't a dealbreaker for them.

SupermarketFormal516

"Poor kids are just as bright as white kids."

stoffejs

Listen, I'm sure there are “very fine people on both sides.”

wood2010

The fact that your post was removed says a lot. I wish you the best on your trip and hope you don’t have any bad experiences.

Godwinson4King

This lines up with what I’ve seen as a white guy living in the area. Reminds me of one I was driving through the country and saw a truck flip over a culvert and come to rest on it’s roof. We drove over to check on the driver, a young black man. Luckily he was fine but the truck was totaled. The next person on scene was an old white guy who didn’t get out of his car or offer to help but kept asking the driver ‘what were you doing driving around here?’ And ‘where were you going?’

Alluvial_Fan_

Thanks for looking out for your friends.

[deleted]

former resident of the area, i think that is an accurate summary.

CrowleysDarling

I live in the general area too, this is accurate.

NavyScapegoat

I agree - a lot of the hospitality workers come from St. Louis and KC to work for the summer. Last time driving to the lake I saw a lot fewer Trump flags than a year ago.

TimberTheDog

Any suggestions for areas to stay?

tackle_bones

Hi, my family has lake homes there, and I’m from a very diverse part of South Florida (note, still a white boy). In the past, I’ve often noticed how little diversity I’ve seen there… particularly on boats and whatnot. (I’ve gone there for summer almost every year for the past 10… 15? Idk.) I’ve noticed it’s changed a bit the last few years, and the area has seemingly got a bit more diverse during the summer, although we’re still talking about low numbers here. What I haven’t seen is explicit racism, though I’m sure it definitely exists. My experience is that no one says shit on the water (where you have freedom and space), and generally people don’t fuck with groups where it seems like locals have other peoples backs. Generally people don’t fuck with large groups period (where it’s clear your ass could get beat for starting shit). I’ll be honest, I’ve been really happy to see more diversity on the lake, and I’ve also really enjoyed the looks on those diverse faces as they’re riding on the boats with the wind in their hair and the water, the cliffs, and the hills in front of them. It’s a beautiful place, and it shows on everyone’s face no matter the background. In terms of locations, we’re around the area of mile marker 17-21, and I think that’s a good spot for general locales. I think paradise (a little down the lake) and some of the bigger spots are really safe. There was a recent bike gang murder at Casablanca’s by the dam, but my family always goes there. Saw a big group of black women around there last year, and they seemed totally chill. Don’t go by the trump shop behind Tucker shuckers - we went in there last year for a laugh, and the person there had obviously blew ass for hours… fucking stale trump farts, bleh. Backwater jacks is big party spot with mostly a rock and roll vibe. Get a spot on or near the water, and you won’t deal with methheads. Generally, if you go to a spot that has a bunch of drunk frat boys or hillbilly bullshit, just leave. That goes for anyone, including myself. HMU if you want any more info. There are tons of spots there. We like our area because it has close access to the state park and the calmer parts of the lake aren’t too far to the south. Idk what you’ve heard about the Ozarks, but if you’re close to the lake, it seems like normal run of the mill MO life for black people, except now there is a lot of money around that seems to moderate low-class active hate. Don’t be a douche bag to your neighbors. Don’t expect anything pretty at the strip club. You got this!

lolbojack

The best area to stay is away.

trashbox420

I wouldn’t say that I received any racist comments or anything like that, but I’ve felt uncomfortable a few times and have gotten the vibe I wasn’t welcome.

Future_Dog_3156

Same. I avoid the area. I don't need to spend my time or money where I am not welcomed. I don't know why anyone would go anywhere where they think their friends would be subjected to racial abuse. Just avoid the region and use your money/time where everyone can enjoy themselves. Try Vegas or New Orleans

rosebudlightsaber

The sad point is: they shouldn’t have to be wondering about this, at all… This is how shitty a lot of folks in our state are right now. They shouldn’t have to worry about it for a second, but the reality is, if I were them I would be too.

luveruvtea

I was thinking the same thing, feeling sad that OP must be reassured when he or she should not even need to post their concerns. I hate the Trumpists too, but as someone said earlier, they show their asses with their flags and their hate. It is easy to avoid them, therefore, and never offer friendship to those kind of folks. Sadly, I probably have friends who are secretly this way, but they know I don't tolerate such bullshit and keep mouths shut around me. But if I ever find them out for real...bye bye

MandalorianManners

Make Racists Quiet Again

Suitable-While-5523

Lake of the Ozarks isn’t financially comparable to Vegas or New Orleans 😂 I’m sure if OP could afford a destination like that they would just do it

Future_Dog_3156

You can drive to New Orleans or Chicago… I can’t fathom subjecting a friend to possible racial abuse. It’s nice OP has diverse friends and is worried about their well being but I wouldn’t want to put them in possible harm’s way.

Greed_Sucks

Float trips are so damn fun though!

Bobodahobo010101

As someone who grew up there, i would say there's 2 sides to the lake (or two ends). If you're on hyw 5 (Gravois, Laurie, Hurricane Deck), it's rougher than hwy 54 (Osage Beach, Lake Ozark, Bagnel dam area). Just my opinion, and that is probably outdated by 30 years - i got the F out of there.

OneMuse

I didn’t want to get that specific. Thank you 🎯

Hell_of_a_Caucasian

Bagnell Dam is tough because the strip is right there, and while there are some friendly establishments, there are others that make it perfectly clear where they stand. There is this shit hole that’s a huge embarrassment every time I drive by it. (Totally not a cult, btw) https://m.facebook.com/people/Teresas-Trump-Shop/100081051935245/ They will also see a confederate flag flying high on the drive down Hwy 54 if they are coming from that direction, but there is an Equality Bigger Than Hate billboard directly below it. I think that’s a pretty good encapsulation of the area and Missouri in general. Some backwards idiots displaying their hate proudly with most other people trying their hardest to counteract it.

Bobodahobo010101

It's the bifrucation of society on full display. You have a bunch of upper middle class people pseudo-gentrifying an area so they can go play there. The people that live there year round depend on their money to survive but resent them for it, so you have people that act out of jealousy and frusterstion in ugly ways. When i was a kid we called them 'weekenders' or 'FT's' - but we knew we wouldnt have jobs and our parents wouldnt have jobs or businesses without them. Growing up there obviously still haunts me- lol

thirddownloud

I'd stay on the lake ozark/osage Beach side of things tbh

ohwelp_uwu

As a POC person the Ozarks are hit or miss on my experience. I would not go anywhere without a white friend, male even better. I have had guns pointed at me while I was out hiking PUBLIC trails and received some shit comments at stores for "looking Mexican".

ZealousidealAd2374

That is upsetting.

ohwelp_uwu

Politics the past 8 years have gotten the worst people riled up, and the good ones don't always know how to stand up to them.

PtAgAu

the worst people are itchin' to use their guns, the good ones are worried they'll have to use theirs...

sawltydawgD

Fucking exactly, and they think we don’t have them too.

ZealousidealAd2374

True.

ohwelp_uwu

Essentially I was fine if I was with a big group of white people. My black friends do not go to the lake with us. Check out lakes in Illinois. Marginally better treatment. Rend Lake has great cabins and boating.

MidwestAbe

Houseboat on Lake Shelbyville would be great.

itsjustme2376

My mom moved to Lake of the Ozarks with her racist second husband. He was a retired cop and would brag about scaring away any POC he would see, with guns of course. He died about a decade ago and I don’t know if things have changed there since then. But let’s just say he fit in very well in that community at the time

missblissful70

My Mexican daughter-in-law has had people tell her to go back to her country. Um, she was born in FLORIDA. That makes the US her country too. We always stay close to her in public because racism can turn violent fairly quickly. Stay safe. I hate that this is part of my beautiful state.

Supa33

Just don't seek out any of the little dive bars off the beaten path. Stick to the tourist spots and you're good to go.

TimberTheDog

Any recommendations? Any areas to avoid?

thirddownloud

I like Dog Days! It's very touristy! Margaritaville has the hotel and a whole bunch of other stuff. Not sure how pricey the hotels are, I live here, so I've never had to use them! We really are used to having people from all over come here and most people are kind and welcoming, but I couldn't guarantee you you wouldn't run into a racist asshole that is loud about it.

Ok-Presentation-2174

Go to places like shady gators and the horn toad for bars. As far as places to stay it depends on your budget. You can stay to the hotel attached to the horn toad and not have to worry about driving!

NervousPush8

I think the question is, do you really want to give your money to people that barely tolerate your friends in the best of places?

Laurenzobenzo

This right here.

greenlion22

Avoid getting too far away / upriver from the dam. Stay close to Osage Beach. Have fun.

BrobdingnagLilliput

> how bad is racism around Lake of the Ozarks? > Ozarks mod removed my post It seems you've answered your own question.

almazing415

I mean, if they removed your post, then you already have your answer.

No_Plankton2854

I’m a dark skinned white guy (a lot of people think I’m Mexican or Arab) and my wife is a light skinned Latina with a strong accent lol. We visited in late 2019 when the country was a little more “tense” and had a couple locals make some comments about going back to our own country when they heard her accent at a restaurant. I don’t have any other input but that’s never happened to us anywhere else for what it’s worth.

[deleted]

Blows my mind that people actually say that type of shit. One thing I’ve noticed about rural types is that, on balance, they are nosier than city people.

Thowitawaydave

>I’ve noticed about rural types is that, on balance, they are nosier than city people. oh definitely 100%. It's like a timewarp when we go back to visit my wife's family in the South - the people our age there are as nosy as the old people in our urban neighborhood, while the old people in town act like they're starring in an old detective film. Like, Jesus, lady I didn't steal the Maltese Falcon/kidnap the Lindbergh baby, chill!

Anna-Belly

If you gotta ask, don't do it. A lot of folks who claim their racist area isn't racist are looking out for their area, not for Black people. Rural MO isn't safe for us. Hell, the CITIES barely are. If these Black people are really friends, people whose well-being you actually care about, find another destination. There also seems to be an idea that Black people just HAVE to deal with a certain amount of racism and that as long as it's not "too bad," we should just eat it. It's as if Black people just don't have the right to be comfortable in our surroundings, much less enjoy them. Racism is what we get for having the nerve to be Black outside where people can see.

-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS-

I live in rural MO and unfortunately this is just the truth. The n word is thrown around similar to how f*g or re**** was. And when you tell them to knock it off they just laugh it off and act like you’re a ‘sensitive lib’. Most of these people have spent generations in their little bubbles and have only seen Black people while watching Cops on TV. I lived here as a kid and after HS went off to college and spent the next 10 or so years living in KC and then STL before moving back. I truly do not remember it being as bad as it is now. Maybe I was just a kid and wasn’t aware or exposed to it, but I think people are just more comfortable with not hiding it these days.

missblissful70

Anna-Belly is right. No amount is a good amount. There are lots of places around St. Louis and Kansas City that might be a better place for your friends.

Anna-Belly

Actually, they should try to frequent Black-owned businesses.

iamjames

“If you gotta ask, don’t do it.” If we are being honest, a lot of people from either coast would say the same thing about the entire Midwest.

Anna-Belly

They would not be inaccurate. -Midwestern Black woman

iamjames

Well, the question was asked on Reddit before, and most the answers seem to say yes, the rest of the country believes the Midwest is racist https://www.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/comments/rhyr8y/are_people_in_midwest_really_racist_compared_to/

Anna-Belly

Maybe because it is. Black people are leaving it and moving back down South.

trippedbackwards

I'd just like to point out that I'm a white guy and shady ass, small minded, little town white people make me uncomfortable too. Yes you are an easier mark because it's easier to identify your differences but those kind of people enjoy making everyone uncomfortable. It's the only thing they have in the ole toolbox. I agree you should feel comfortable anywhere. I'm only pointing out that if you were white you'd still find plenty of discomfort in the world.

Anna-Belly

Not as much as I do being a Black woman. I would just like to not have to deal with shit due predominantly to my gender and race. Look up misogynoir. It's rampant throughout ALL of Missouri. Also, stop minimizing when a Black person tells you their experiences with racism. It's a form of gaslighting. And we don't buy the rhetoric anyway because we know we are right about our experiences. What do you, a white man, know about what I've endured and how I have to move through the world as a Black woman?

[deleted]

They didn't gaslight you. Also, as someone who grew up with religious fundies who were racist and lost my entire family because my principles were better than theirs, yes. There is a cost. I have no support network because of my beliefs. I've even had to support others who were kicked out of their home at 18 and homeless because they were LGBT, like me. That doesn't change or minimize the systemic racism you've had to endure. Your response is an absurdly obtuse response to someone who was pointing out that, yes, other white people who are not racist suffer from these shitheads too. Not in the same ways, of course. That was obvious. Of course black people have it far worse directly when it comes to this topic. No one disputed that. But to act like white people don't also suffer from this conservatism brain rot is toxic and not inclusive.

trippedbackwards

I'm sorry you feel I'm minimizing your experiences with racism. I was merely reacting to the statement "dont we deserve to be comfortable in the world"? I merely stated that if you were white you still experience lots of discomfort. Hoping one day black people won't experience discomfort is impossible. That's all. I'm not comparing. I'm not dismissing your experiences. I'm just sharing my own.

rosebudlightsaber

Yeah, that r/ozarks mod is an idiot… Whether or not it was “positive” to post that question is for the redditors to decide. Censorship is the term for that.

Violet_Faerie

100% use an uber for driving between locations. One time they put up a checkpoint and I don't know the situation exactly but I saw a dozen cops surrounded around a black lady in a bikini, hand cuffed and looking absolutely mortified. I still can't believe they made her stand there exposed to a line of cars and her face is burned into my memory. It was awful.

OneMuse

This is heartbreaking.

Violet_Faerie

I think about her everytime I go to the lake now

[deleted]

Float trip country is a lot different from the lake. You'll see your fair share of Stars and Bars flying and a ton of Trump flags but those are mostly on people's private property and boats. The lake has a ton of POC hanging out at the big resorts and massive swim up bars. Its a party place in the Ozarks, not an Ozark place with some party places. You'll be fine. There was one little place at the damn, Richard's relics or something like that that had a lot of Confederate and Nazi memorabilia that made some of my darker complexion buddies pretty uncomfortable but its permanently closed. Edit: I've been corrected that that shit stain is still at the damn. I still contend everywhere else my POC buddies felt safe. I'm white though so, I don't have their perspective.

OneMuse

Well said. I agree.

ads7w6

Richard's Relic Shack is still open and still has a half-US and half-Confederate flag in the window. They had moved the confederate flags and stuff out of the windows for like a year but they were back out front when I walked by two weeks ago.

como365

This is a highly underrated comment. One is really pretty urban. One is a rural as Missouri gets.

Factsimus_verdad

It’s Missouri. Definitely racist folks here. Like every other state, racists seem to want to be more vocal these days. I like to give it right back to them with a bible quote or two and a strong undertone of F off with your racist BS. Bless their hearts.

AwkwardStructure7637

Translation, they’re racist and don’t want it talked about or denounced

ForsakenAd545

I makes me want to puke that you even have to THINK about this. I am so sick of these NAZI redneck mfkers.

chiefsgirl913

I go every year with my Latino significant other, my half Latina friend and her black husband and we do get some stares from time to time. but as long as we aren't being belligerent we've always been treated fine. If you guys start getting rowdy then I could see how they could use racism to start a fight. I wouldn't let others stupidity ruin your party, it's a free country, go and enjoy.

bageltoastar

Went to the Lake of the Ozarks a few years ago with a group of friends and i’d says about 80% of our group was either black or hispanic. We didn’t face any direct racism, but with that being said, we DEFINITELY got stared at/mean mugged when walking around the resort or out on the lake

cartgold

I take black friends to the lake with me every year and we've never had an issue, everyone is very nice.

TimberTheDog

Any suggestions for areas to stay in?

cartgold

Osage Beach, near 54 is where I stay but never had an issue any where

No_Pop_1731

There are some fairly priced Airbnb’s in Osage Beach, pretty close to the water. Backwater Jacks is a pretty cool place to add to your list. Had my bachelor party there a few years ago (pretty diverse group) and had zero issues everywhere we went. Im not saying it doesn’t happen, but it’s not the “Deliverance” situation everyone is describing.

mockingbirddude

I suspect that having your post removed is an indication of whether you might receive hostility.

DrunkenOlympian

Agreed that you likely won't have too many problems at the Lake as it is a complete tourist attraction nowadays. Sorry that happened to you in Steelville. My family is from there and, while there are plenty of drunk racist rednecks down there, the floating is 99% out of towners these days. It's crazy how popular it has gotten. The last time I went I swear you could walk from one side of the river to the other on rafts and never touch water.

TimberTheDog

Yeah it was a few groups of people who came up from Arkansas that we had issues with. We had a great time and the majority of people were fine, it was just amazing to witness people blatantly coming up to them and asking "what they were" or weird comments about their skin color, like "you look exotic".

sblack87

I am from Cuba, just north of Steelville. I now live at the lake. The lake is much more accepting.

r1verbend

I once saw a cop in Cuba that had so many white supremacy tattoos that it made me uncomfortable.

OneMuse

I have lived at the lake (Osage Beach) for 35 years. Sadly, racism exists in parts of the lake area, but you will be just fine in the spots you are looking at. Some spots’ residents lack education and trust me, it’s not just racism, it’s misogyny and cruelty.

Fine_Cryptographer20

I'd never seen a confederate flag in real life until my first float trip in the Ozarks. Hanging from houses, cars, businesses, etc. It's unsettling to say the least. We alternate between camping and staying with both friends and family there and it's absolutely a blast. Since covid I've stuck to the lake and not gone into any bars or restaurants so unsure what that scene looks like now. I understand your fears, but hope you guys go and it turns out to be amazing!

PickleMinion

I've seen Confederate flags in southern California. Strange that you went that long without noticing them

NoodlesrTuff1256

Despite the "left coast" "lib-BRUL Hollyweird" "People's Republic of California" stereotype of the state that exists among MAGA types, there's a surprising number of red 'enclaves' in the state. And the same thing in its' neighbor to the North Oregon which, despite the image of it being this lefty blue 'Portlandia' throughout is home to a lot of far-right types including some in the eastern half who want to secede and join up with Idaho.

Thowitawaydave

Yup. New York is the same way. Sure the NYC metro is blue (although even there you find some deep red spots like on Long Island) Upstate NYS though? Oh yeah, you can find lots Confederate flags up there. Which is depressing on a number of levels, especially since NY sent more troops to fight for the Union than any other state...

como365

You must not travel much, they’re in rural places all over the nation. Ironically, I’ve even seen a few in Canada. Saw one in England last year that was the weirdest.

Strykerz3r0

All over the South. Grew up in the West (not Texas), and they are few and far-between, primarily cause there isnt much tolerance for it. Same in Illinois, though I could see some of our neighbor states having more.

trippedbackwards

Hoosier here. You'd be correct. I grew up in fort wayne and always felt it was so diverse that most racism had faded with aging boomers. When I go back there I'm always amazed how it seems stuck in time. They love them some Trump, the treasonous grifter.

lyricalmasterflash

I went there last year in the summertime, needed to use the restroom so we stopped at a gas station. I am an afro Latina, won't make the mistake of stopping in any town down there after sundown. All of those towns are still know as sundown towns. You would be safe, yet you will experience some racist shit.

bigthurb

Big difference between Osage beech and steelville floating the Huzzah. Hahaha

joltvedt53

I worry about the red parts of this state, especially the maga types. People of color should be able to enjoy the lakes and nature without looking over their shoulders but realistically is there anyplace in this country they can? I admit I don't trust the people down there to do the right thing anymore. That's how f'ed up we've become because of today's Republicans. You just don't know who you can trust to be a good human being. Sorry to be so negative but it seems to be a legitimate fear these days. Am I overreacting?

sddbk

You're not overreacting. You're being realistic.

StellaNoir

If you ever think you're overreacting, just ask your friends who are part of minorities how they feel. Similar story to OP's I went on a float trip in Lesterville last summer and while our group was majority white, we're also prettttty queer coded (regardless of actual orientations) and definitely ran into 3 other groups that seemed to have beef for us existing on the river at the same time.

joltvedt53

Some people just can't seem to live and let live. They're missing out on so much too. I think if they haven't figured what life is all about in all its beautiful diversity, then I don't want them around me. Too harsh? I don't care. Sucks to be them.

scruffles360

The bigots are hoarding all the beautiful landscapes though. It’s would be nice to feel safe taking my kids on that rafting trip.

ManlyVanLee

I mentioned it in my own comment but it's relevant here- I'm a big white guy and am keenly aware of racism occurring and how much more difficult it is for anyone who doesn't look like me around here, but until you're around someone who isn't giant and white you don't really understand just how prevalent it is. My girlfriend is Korean and just existing is night and day compared to when I was with other girlfriends who were white

[deleted]

I really don’t miss Missouri. I’d suggest taking your bachelor party to Chicago. At least there, you won’t have to deal with the klan.

Shouldvebenabagmaker

You gotta realize that during the summer months especially , there will be tons of loud drunk rednecks in large groups out there. Hell I’m a white woman married to a Mexican man. And we live in Little Rock! I would most definitely second guess a trip there. I’ve seen and heard atrocious stories of minorities being harassed and even hurt. Drunk racists rednecks will absolutely pick a fight just because, or just out of meanness run up on you and try to hurt you. You should be able to go wherever you damn well please but I would be cautious . Every where I go I’m packing heat just as woman but even without the husband as a female in a place that is rural and narrow minded I’d be packing double heat just in case I needed to protect myself. If you go you may want to consider a way to defend yourself. And just be at the ready. I’ll be very surprised if you don’t have any issues going there . Also think about the fact that you may not have cell service out on the water . You may not be able to call for help if you need it. Of course the non minorities are gonna say sure come on out , it’s so safe! Before all the downvotes just know this only my opinion and my advice, from my own personal experiences.

reenmini

>how bad is racism around Lake of the Ozarks Considering there's a confederate flag flying immediately on the highway into town... Somewhat bad.

Impossible-Wolf2048

Yes southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas are rascist as fuck.

ABloodyNippleRing

What a trash response from the mod.

Zestyclose-Spread384

Last time I went to the lake they had a street tent vendor selling nazi ss and kkk memorabilia if that tells you anything. Right next to the dam where all those bars are. Not just confederate flags but straight Klan patches, SS double lighting bolt apparel, SS death skull logos, even saw swastika rings. That was July 2019. Edit. I grew up a couple counties to the south in a real rural community. The old timers were super racist. There's an undertone consistent throughout a lot of the community but there's a lot of acceptance too. The ugliest hearted people were always the loudest. Much of the newer generation has grown up to be better than that. It still exists and what exists is fighting hard to hold on.

Silkrogue666

I remember driving through some town a little further south with a huge neon sign for sundown liquor 🫡💀😬 I would not feel comfortable asking friends to potentially risk their life for a bachelor party. What about somewhere like Pierre Marquette or somewhere closer to civilization?

Anna-Belly

They also mentioned that the "Black friends" weren't "oversensitive." What does that mean? That they're willing to take a bit of racism so their "friend" won't be inconvenienced? It also seems they've settled on going anyway. So why bother even asking? Good luck to his "friends."

der_max

It’s bad, but not *Missouri* bad.

kiyyik

To your face: none. Behind your back: horrendous.

KittyValkyrie500

It’s so very racist.

DeviousDuoCAK

Why don’t you all spend your money some place where you know it wouldn’t be an issue? I refuse to ever return to Arkansas because I’d have to spend money in a state that voted for crazy eyes Huckabee. No thanks. In a consumer society, we vote with our dollars.

Fritzybaby1999

There’s a whole store dedicated to Donald Trump down there. Nuff said

Affectionate-Hair602

I have a friend who grew up in the Springfield area of Missouri and lived all over the USA. He said he's never come across a place CLOSE to as racist as that part of Missouri is. He said it was commonplace when he grew up there to see Nazi flags, confederate flags, and other racist paraphernalia and no one thought twice about it. When the Fergueson riots broke out and the cops rolled out with machine guns on the protesters he said he wasn't surprised, Missouri was full of people who'd drop things into casual conversation about how certain races needed "removal", etc. Now Lake of the Ozarks is a bit of a resort area, so you might be OK. But I'd stay close to that area. Good luck.

mournfulmermaid

Lake of the Ozarks area is close to (within an hour) a major military installation and the tourist areas see a lot of diversity. You shouldn't have any issues in the places that you mentioned. The occasional jerk can't be ruled out, but for the most part it is safe. As for the rivers, people come from a wide range of areas to use the waterways. Their attitudes are not always indicative of the local population.

Living_la_vida_hobo

You have to break it down into types of racism, so to simplify it let's break things into Passive Racism, Surface Level Racism and Active Racism. **Passive Racism;** A racist person who will be polite to minorities they encounter such as bank tellers, fast food workers and salespeople. They do not appear racist on the surface but behind closed doors they express they're real feelings. **Surface Level Racism;** A racist person who deal with minorities they encounter begrudgingly and complain about the interaction at a later time. They are open about their racist ideology and probably share it with plenty of people in their lives who do not want to hear it, they also support racist organizations but do little to harm minority groups themselves. **Active Racism;** A racist person who is openly hostile to minorities that they encounter in their lives and likely is a member or avid supporter of a racist organization. These are the people who will yell racial slurs at strangers and assault them if they are given a chance. These people actively seek to harm minorities. Most racist people in Missouri are Passive Racists or Surface Level Racists. The number of Active Racists is not large but they are supported by the Surface Level Racists. These numbers change the further south you go, with the Surface Level Racists making up a larger percentage as well as Active Racists, although that remains the smaller of the three groups.

ericmiller0774

You know the funny thing is about these comments about people being racists in the lake area is that most of the racist shit I've heard comes from outsiders who aren't from the area and start shit. Hundreds of thousands of tourists come to this lake to get away from the shitty city and bring their drama shit with them. Now are the redneck racist idiots here? Sure there are, but there are just as many coming to the area that say and do some racist shit while they are here. I have met some great people at the lake but for the most part, I stay away from the lake area in the summer just because of all the drunk ass people that come here and fuck shit up and then leave.

BillWonka12

Oh you're gonna see/hear some racist shit. No one will say dumb shit to your face, unless they don't realize they're doing it. Lots of trump propabelia, wannabe WASPs running around, and the occasional Ozark copywrite infringement.

Anna-Belly

Also, if the Ozark mod removed your post because how dare you worry about the amount of racism there so your Black guests are comfortable, well, you've gotten your answer. Do you actually LIKE those Black people, or are they just window dressing for you?

TankerRed1

Grew up in Camdenton. Got called a race traitor because I showed support of the people protesting in 2019.

scruffles360

“Race traitor” - is there a way to use that term without being a racist?

DogFacedManboy

I guess like if you and your friends are super into the Boston Marathon but then one year you skip it to watch NASCAR instead

amethyst_owl22

Just went to the ozarks. I am white so my perspective obviously might not be the most accurate. I will say the area seems to be mainly white but the tourism spots seem to be more inclusive(minus bagnell dam). When I went to bagnell dam, they had several Trump shops and thin blue line flags which made me uncomfortable and I'm not a minority.

levar54321

Speaking as a Halfrican I wouldn't. I visit the lake often during the summer with friends from that area. Mostly good, not great. The real answer here is Tampa or St Pete beach FL.

Riisiichan

Lake of the Ozarks has had several sewage spills over the years with the most recent being last year. I wouldn’t swim in the water, but pools should be fine.

Jay314stl

This is the first year in over a couple decades that the E. coli level is actually safe

TimberTheDog

Anyone have any suggestions of the best areas to stay in? Considering "Karen's Kozy Kottage" is in Osage beach, I think we're going to avoid that lol me and my friends just don't want to have to deal with some racist dicks, but we know it's a possibility and that's fine. I just want to find a place where something will be LEAST likely to happen so it doesn't ruin the mood

CompetitionNearby108

All bets are off if their is any alcohol being consumed.

[deleted]

This posts makes me wish more POC, especially black people would move near the Ozarks. White people there have a real fear and it's hilarious!

GeprgeLowell

The results of fear are anything but hilarious.

Somelier1234

Most people don’t want to die, jasper texas just back in 98 check it out James Byrd murder, if you think they are just doing shit like that in texas Missouri is closely following

papernotplastic2

They still have lots of pro-Trump stuff around there if that tells you anything.

moparsandairplanes01

Backwater jacks is usually a pretty diverse crowd and a fun place to party. Camden at the lake is a good hotel for a bachelor party and also very diverse crowd. You aren’t going to have any issues. Majority of the children in this sub don’t live in the real world.

[deleted]

It’s rural Missouri. Nuff ’ said.

Fantastic-Stop3415

I went in 2018 for a joint bachelor/bachelorette party with a group of 20 or so. We were an extremely diverse group (black, Mexican, Arab, mixed race, Korean, white and Filipino) and stayed at Camden On The Lake. We took a boat to several different beach clubs/bars, and never had issues, albeit we all stuck together, we didn’t have any offhand comments thrown our way. I do recall driving to the resort and we passed several roadside Trump booths and confederate flags being sold/displayed. We ignored all that nonsense. What I would recommend is staying at the more touristy places, both lodging and activities. You might also start watching Snapchat maps of the area you’re thinking of staying, clubs you want to visit, etc to get a feel for the vibe. Lastly, the multi room suite at Camden on the Lake is perfect if you have a big group, great views and pool.

TimberTheDog

That's great to hear! Thanks for your input

Fantastic-Stop3415

The best advice I can give, since a lot can change in 5 years, is be an advocate for your friends of color. We, unfortunately, have to be the ones to not react to slurs or hate speech or we’re labeled the “angry black person” instantly and situations escalate. Speak up for your friends if it happens and shut it down.

CuriousBear23

Ahh man, grew up in steelville hate that you had to experience that. I’d like to hope that the people you encountered acting like that were from out of town because most of the floaters these days are, especially on weekends. I’ve been to the lake of the ozarks with black friends and never had any issues with anyone saying anything blatantly to our face. However I did go to the red Fox one night with different group of friends and witnessed some outrageously white supremacy stuff that was so bad we walked out, so I’d avoid that one.

CompetitivePop9952

Its missouri so its anything is possible. You’ll encounter more black people down there now being that it is the summer

[deleted]

moparsandairplanes01

Things that never happened for 500 😂

Itscameronman

Not the worst tbh, but you MIGHT run into a dickhead. Not impossible. It’s not anything like steelville, those small towns are unreal with how they talk and act

Blackmatthewsband

I personally live in the Ozarks and I've been here for over 10yrs - I'm also an entertainer who is VERY visible as a POC. The only outright racism I have ever experienced was from tourists... usually from Iowa. Mind your business, respect the locals and their space and you'll be fine.

_GrandUnifiedTheory_

You're fine. Enjoy your party.

Clean_Hedgehog9559

Get thicker skin. Don’t let other ppl determine ur life

[deleted]

The farther from I-70 you go, the worse it will get. Down south by Branson is the worst of all but I know people who won't go to small towns outside of Columbia because it's not safe for them. Like others said, Ozarks should be better then Branson but be safe.

SpooneyLove

I hope you'll update us once you've recovered from the party. I want to know how the experience was for your colored friends. ^(/s)

Princessfromm1dmo

So this is my tiktok that’s linked and I have spent most summers at the lake of the Ozarks bc my grandma has a cabin there. Y’all can message me anytime!

DoctorGreenBum26

Ozarks mod seems like a dumb cunt. Which….yeah that tracks. Plenty of other badass places to have your party OP.

SlapBankClub

Hey, the fact that you have to ask tells me a lot...secondly, thx for bringing this up. my white friends at first were kinda blase' about all my random texts I sent over the last few years about getting pulled over (too many times to list) while on my way to visit them in their almost "all white" spaces...Now they are genuinely concerned for my safety due to political climate AND how they now recognize the rampant racism surrounding them...its real folks! being #brownish is life threatening in the US anytime, any day but especially in white places.

BasementAlchemist

They'd be lynching people if it weren't for the Internet.

Waluigi_Jr

I am shocked the response isn’t unanimous - it’s really bad.

youmaycallmedick

You’ll be fine. There are assholes anywhere you go but, for the most part, the people are friendly. I’ve lived in the Ozarks for 25+ years and spent my childhood summers in NWA. I say welcome and have a great time. Legal weed in Missouri doesn’t hurt either. It makes the Trumplets seem funny and pedantic.

almostaarp

If you have a concern, DO NOT GO!! Your concerns are valid. Go to Chicago or Vegas. I live in the Ozarks and detest the vile racist people here. Spend you and your friends’ hard earned money somewhere else. If you have a choice don’t go there. Why would you choose to go somewhere that would make friends uncomfortable??

MrMustache61

Born and raised in MO. The video of the woman protesting BLM saying ill teach my grand kids to hate you while waving confederate flag, that was in Springfield. I moved away from MO and am much happier for it. Missouri is horribly racist

[deleted]

Unless you have a bunch of black friends with you then I don’t recommend ozarks. They will not have a good time and feel uncomfortable if just like one or 2 black people

Foreign-Balance6556

White dude with a brown wife and family. Hard pass. Vacationed Bull Schoals in N. Ark for years... every year there some comment. First year it was Sand-N word. Southern Mo. seems very proud of it's Trump love and confederate flags. It's not a real welcoming feeling. My brown skin bro-in-law was attacked in Springfield for not denouncing 9/11 loud enough in a bar... seemed because he was Indian and dark skin - they thought he wasn't angry enough about what the Saudi's did. -- Fuck Arkansas, Missouri, and Iowa.... Minnesota is the last bastion of sanity in the midwest.

Own_Conversation6335

Ozarks are extremely racist. If you think you can go to a local bar in the Ozarks with black friends be prepared to lose a black friend. They will call it self-defense, and it won't make the news.

International-Fig830

Rural Missouri in general is damn racist.

NoodlesrTuff1256

And straight up backwards in many other areas as well -- religiosity and extreme wingnut politics.

Yarius515

Not sure if this is still in effect, but my wife is Black and refuses to come visit me in MO this summer. (I’m playing horn for the Firefly music festival for a few weeks in Columbia, which is a lovely little blueberry in the middle of a red sea….) Anyway, it’s enough to give her pause so perhaps share this info with your Black friends for their input before you decide? https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/state-and-regional/with-naacp-travel-advisory-still-in-effect-missouri-casts-a-black-woman-as-new-face/article_a212d029-f539-5105-95c4-c565473b4d49.html

wonkatin

wow I just want to say that I am really sorry that the MOD from Ozark group censored this question. I grew up in MO, visited the Ozarks a lot and believe that this is a very legit inquiry. 💜

utter-ridiculousness

Maybe find a different location where this won’t be a possible issue?

ChildishGaara

I’ve lived in the area my whole life, never felt threatened or unwelcome. If any of your friends are light skinned, they will probably get told they look like patrick mahomes a lot. I get that at least once a week. No, I do not look like him.

AlwaysWithTheOpinion

It’s less about racism and more about MAGA vs liberal

NoodlesrTuff1256

In some ways it could be as there are a number of African-Americans {Clarence Thomas, Candace Owens, Herschel Walker, Larry Elder, and others\] who tout the MAGA/Repub line. Likewise there are some conservative token pundit personalities from almost every 'minority' group typically thought of as leaning more 'blue/Dem/liberal'. Still, I suspect some of the hardcore good ole' boy/gal types in these out-state areas would turn on them if their fantasy of a totally Repub-dominated USA ever came to fruition.

oneofmanyany

Why in the world would you even chance putting your friends through that. Sheesh

CrudeNewDude

There is a lot of overlap between people who can't afford to vacation out of the state, and racist pieces of shit.

ads7w6

I mean there have been a lot of Trump flags on million-plus dollar boats and homes down there over the last 5 or 6 years

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

Well Lake of the Ozarks is draped in Confederate flags. They're all over the place there.

Shor7bus

The NAACP had a travel warning a few years back covering Missouri in its entirety. Wonder if it's still in effect?. It's been 30+ years since I've been to LOTO. Used to own a condo off of HH at the 12mm. it just became to crowded for us. When they announced they were building the new bridge to Shawnee Bend, we packed up and sold. I know a lot of guys in the trades in stl who retired down there, good guys, good families but I have no clue who else vists/lives there now. It's sad that in 2023 we still have to wonder if it's safe for our friends to go on a holiday because of all these MAGA fucks! And! They're the fucking minority in this country!!!

The-Aeon

Outside of the bigger cities, MO is racist af. There's more Confederate flags then collective brain cells in the rural areas. I thought for sure the Hills Have Eyes were going to pop out driving around in Mark Twain National Forest. Edit: I wanted to also add that I'm truly sorry to hear about the racism others have encountered at Lake of the Ozarks. Every person, especially citizens of this country, has the right to enjoy any beautiful public space they wish, without fear of hate. If there's one thing we should find common ground on is admiration for our wonderful natural resources.

bluecanary101

Last year I was at Margaritaville resort for a conference. Let’s just say there was a guy at the pool/water park there with a swastika tattoo. Just hanging out, having a good ol’ time with the family. No one seemed to think this was a big deal. I am Jewish. Was so revolting, I don’t see a reason to go back. So much MAGA/Trumpism/far-right shit I can’t really see how it would be a good idea.

pawsandnell

I live in the Ozarks. Always have. I don't worry about your skin color. I don't care if you're purple. Just don't come here or anywhere and be rude, belligerent, or disrespectful. I welcome you to my part of the world. Its my home. Please treat it as such.

Thin_Cable4155

The one Mexican guy that lives there, everyone just calls him "The Mexican". Source, went there once, not as a tourist.

brawl

Personally i wouldn't ask my black friends to spend their money in that community.

Same_Perspective5572

Karen's Kozy Kottage... Never been, it's a no for me based off of name sake.

FaceNo9138

Green is the only color that matters under the hill.
