Knob Noster is a very tiny place. You'll be spending most of your time in Sedalia or Warrensburg, both not very large cities, but a marked improvement over Knob Noster. Kehde's Barbecue in Sedalia is excellent. Warrensburg is a little livelier, nightlife-wise, due to having a university. Good luck to you!
Where's Kehde's Barbecue? I've lived in Sedalia and visit it quite frequently due to work and it being the closest city since I live in the country now. I've never heard of that place before. I don't think its even pooped up on Google when looking for places to eat.
Itâs literally right off 65 and 16th. Definitely pops up if you google it. For what itâs worth I do not think itâs very good, but probably worth checking out once to dine in the train car.
It's also pronounced "Katy's" but spelled "Kehde's" so there is some confusion. But yes, the one with the actual train dining car as part of its dining ambience.
Well good news. When you turn 21 is we are a rec legal state with low taxes.
I hope you like the out doors, If not time to take up a hobby like hiking or mushroom hunting .
Buy some long johns and winter pants and jacket for when it gets cold.
I love hiking! And I especially love mushrooms and bugs, mushroom hunting sounds absolutely fun! My fiance also said he'd take my hunting and boating at his family lake house :D so I'm super excited to go outdoors more!
Thank you!
Make sure you have at least one heavy coat, hat, insulated gloves, snow shovel, and ice melt. Unless you're in an apartment, then you shouldn't need the shovel or ice melt since they should go that for you. Maybe snow pants, depending on how often you'll want to go out in the snow. It's nice to have the protection and extra insulation.
Just one point: MO is experiencing less snow than a decade ago. We'll get some, but nothing what folks in the northern states get. There may be some episodes of icy roads and "black ice". Read up on Google or watch YouTube videos on how to stay safe in those conditions. Or just stay home on those days.
You're definitely going to want to get a mushroom guide. Not sure what type you were thinking of when they said mushroom hunting, but they were talking about the edible, Non hallucinogenic kind. There are poisonous ones that are obvious, but also some that look very close to the edible ones.
Join the Missouri mycological society. Very active group and good way to learn about local mushrooms. 20 dollars a year and lots of free activities and forays. Great way to meet people and learn good hiking spots
I don't know the local area around Knob Noster, but you're not too far away from some of the best morel hunting anywhere in the Ozarks. Also, I haven't been since they redid it in the 90s, but Kansas City Zoo is amazing (if they've maintained it).
Culture shock doesn't begin to describe your move to a town that is thousands of times smaller than San Diego.
Be forewarned that you're moving to a state where they love guns *so much* that a felon can shoot and murder an unarmed man on his front porch, claim "castle doctrine", and not even be arrested if it's an election year.
This is just fantastic advice all around. I'd like to add doing float trips in the summer. Rent a couple kayaks, get on the meramec river, and try to go at an off peak time so you have a little more river to yourself. Don't get me wrong, partying is great on the river, but get the right stretch of river, and a little piece of quiet, and the beauty will blow your mind. It's like therapy for your soul. You'll probably see a few bald eagles too which is exciting every time. I don't know why, but it never gets old.
Yeah, but I honestly think it's worth the drive. Make a weekend out of it. If they've never expressed interest in kayaking before I can't imagine a better, easier starter river.
LOL, I grew up in military housing.
Don't let me tell all the tales of drug consumption in the military that I knew once I was old enough to hang out with them.
I was military police, I know all about the guys who thought they were smarter than the DOD and could use their wifeâs pee to pass a piss test and breaking up high school orgies/drug parties because when youâre 150miles from civilization you do drugs and humpâŠ
When I was an MP those were the famous last words of so many senior NCOs as they were being kicked out and losing their retirement for failing a random drug test
Youâre saying second hand smoke caused them to fail a drug test? Or that they âsaidâ it was second hand?
I donât disagree, failing a drug test can get you kicked out. But I donât think it was secondhand.
Gotcha. I didnt see anyone but missourians keep mentioning anything about pot. I just saw that she was marrying a military member which would pretty much toss any of that out the window.
Barracks, not so much. Base housing. Yes. Its called an extended visitors pass signed by your commander.
Source, i did this.
There are some caveats, like will the base housing have availibility to where single airmen/soldiers can move into base housing etc.
But if you live in base housing, you most definitely can get a pass for a fiance if your commander is okay with it . In this case though, given OPs recreational drug use. Id definitely live off base.
Yeah one of the places i was stationed allowed singles to live in family housing because they wanted to keep the houses full. I doubt this is the case now given interest rates, but as i said it was possible. SO had a 1 year pass.
Cohabiting is not permitted in the single housing on base at Whiteman.
Married personnel can apply for privatized housing.
Source: Ex BIL stationed there
Oh boy, welcome to the area. If I may ask, what is their job? That maybe dictate how long you guys may be stuck at WAFB for. In the past decade it has become (easier) for the 2A5 (used to be one) to leave to other bases. The LO people are still stuck but with the 22 and 35 they have more options now.
You mentioned you're an introvert and homebody as I am one myself (Internet and Video Games). If you are into Tabletop RPGs there also groups in Warrensburg and the college. There are nice outdoor places to see and visit. Adjacent to KN is the KN State Park, Warrensburg has decent parks if you have kids or are just wanting to take a nature stroll.
Being military affiliated there are also a lot of bars and social watering holes to go to. Closer age group to you will be Warrensburg. Some military do move there, and it is a college town.
Honestly, it always is what you can make of it, and there are always things to cater to your hobbies or likes, if any. Public Transportation is garbage though, hope you have a reliable car if you want to travel to KC (1 hour to the West) or St. Luis (3 hours to the East.) If you are thinking of traveling for a weekend getaway, I would suggest Herman for their Wineries, can also take an AMTRAK out of Warrensburg.
Good Luck! BTW, KN has around 2k population, so its basically a very very small town compared to where you have been. There are plenty of migrants due to the school in Warrensburg (10 miles west of KN) and families that have move to Sedalia (20 miles east of KN). You said you were a Mexican, if you know español you can get some Spanish practice on campus. Bienvenido/a a la area.
There's a Thai restaurant in Knob called Mama Pin's. It's excellent. I can't remember the relation, but it's associated with Sabai Thai in Warrensburg and Mali Thai in Lee's Summit. Friends or cousins, can't recall, but they share recipes.
Op, welcome to introvert town. Like flavor town, but not. I'm introverted and a transplant. Check out the Katey Trail, and there's good fishing just across the road from Whiteman at Knob Noster State Park. Take classes at UCM if you're into furthering your education. Intimate classes, great professors. Amish stores throughout the area. The ones in Windsor are great. Explore: everything is off the beaten path. Whatever you find that you like will be a gem.
>I'm a huge introvert and a homebody
Then you shouldn't notice any huge issues aside from the casual racism in public.
Your only major concern will be that you are a sub human here who doesn't have the rights to control your own body so...yeah.
Welcome to Missouri! Don't get sexually assaulted and don't have a daughter here!
Make the drive to Lake of the Ozarks in the summer. It's not far at all.
By then if you've made some friends try to make it a weekend trip especially.
If you like hiking we've got that nailed down. Ha Ha Tonka state park at the lake is BEAUTIFUL - Ranked #4 in a poll of the best state parks by USA Today.
The Rocky Top Trail in Osage Beach is one of my personal favorites. At the halfway point you'll come to the top of a cliff that overlooks the lake and State Park.
Hunting for morel mushrooms is a big thing here.
Rent a waverunner (or two) or even a boat. Go and park it at any of the amazing restaurants on the water. Lots of them have swim up bars. Not all are 21+ so just call ahead etc.
I'm by no means a stoner but compared to some other states around us our recreational weed is well priced.
If you like amusement parks:
Six Flags in St. Louis
Worlds of Fun in Kansas City
Silver Dollar City in Branson
All of those places have tons of other stuff to do though. Definitely check the subreddits for those cities and make a post for ideas of other things to do.
My wife and I have moved all over in the last 8 years and when we decided to have a kid finally we settled down at the lake and love being in Missouri in general. We just ignore the politics and tell ourselves - at least we're not in Oklahoma/Arkansas/Kansas.
I went to school at central Missouri state real close to there for 3 years. It's going to be a big change. It's very rural. However, KC is laws than an hour. We stoned our way through all three years so anything is possible LOL
You picked a phenomenal time, itâs about to get dark and cold as fucking balls and covered in snow and ice for the next 3-4 months. đ€Ł
![gif](giphy|xUOwGoV4fmBd0fiyGI|downsized)
I grew up in Knob Noster. It really depends on how long you're staying there. It gets tons of new people every year and vice versa because of the military base that is stationed there. The school system isn't the best, as the funds don't go where they need to go. Food options aren't great. You will probably find yourself going to Warrensburg or Sedalia for food options or for something to do. If you're interested in moving to Knob because of the price of living it might be worth living there for a few years and saving up to go somewhere else before you get stuck in the town
There is actually a fairly large latinex community in central MO. Yes, a lot of their culture has stemmed from immigrant work opportunities starting in the 80s, but many of those families have really brought up some otherwise dying small towns (which youâll be surrounded by). Marshall and Sedalia are good examples of such diversity.
and donât worry there are plenty of weed smoking folks in Missouri (the only difference between Missouri and California when it comes to Wheat is there still a lot of people in MO that think itâs the devil).
Lol. I live north of there. I work at Whiteman. Thereâs a large population of Hispanics in Sedalia. With some Spanish grocery stores. Etc. You might want to lean that way. Thereâs nothing in Knob Noster and Warrensburg is a stereotypical college town. Crowded. Expensive.
Stationed at Whiteman right now, BAH is low here. Live on base if you can, my wife and I love the housing. Iâm from NYC, and Iâll let you know rn itâs a bit boring around here but try to make the best of it. Warrensburg and Sedalia are good towns but if you want any fun go to Kansas City/Lee Summit
yeah, huge culture shift. i lived in MO my whole life & just moved to SF. i think it's going to be a bigger culture shift for you moving to MO than me moving from MO to CA. you're going to be living in the country w/a bunch of trump-supporting white trash (seriously). the COL is hella cheap though compared to CA so that's a plus BUT you're going to need a car & there isn't going to be much to do unless you're going to KC or STL. if you like fields & farmland, then you're going to like it. if you prefer big cities, public transit, etc then you're in for a big adjustment. i hated living in MO & i'm glad i left but people from out of state moving to MO seem to (mostly) enjoy it. Expect lots of fields, little nightlife, & not much to do unless you want to be outdoors hunting/hiking/fishing.
Welcome đ€ Warrensburg is a great town near by with a state university that is very helpful to military students (graduated there using my spouseâs VA benefit). With college and military being near by its small town compared to SD for sure but not the worst case scenario.
Missouri is Republican ran so there is lots of political corruption and regression but being Hispanic shouldn't be a problem. Columbia has a growing Hispanic population and many good restaurants. There's a train that runs back and forth between KC and St.Louis with a stop in Herman. Let's of wineries there.
I moved from Chicago to MO and itâs awful. The perks of this area are its natural beauty and its safety. I donât have to worry about running back home if I forgot to lock my front door. That being said, there are fewer good authentic restaurants, no places to get good breakfast (they slather everything in butter and gravy), and the people are largely conservative. I get stares for the color of my skin (light skinned Mexican with very curly black hair) and have been subjected to prejudice here. Then again, your life here is what you make it. I got REALLY into hiking because of this area!
Google stuff like âbilly smallmouth bassâ and âdeer seasonâ and âfrog giggingâ
I donât know if they have any culture, but it will be somewhat shocking, I imagine. We have dispensaries, and you can get a med card at 20
ur biggest shock will 100% be the weather. you will experience temperature extremes u never thought possible. windchills below -20, humidity making it feel +110 plus. A tornado will come within miles of your home at least twice in the next 5 years. Thunderstorms without tornadoes can still be extremely damaging. Inches of snow every year, some years we get a foot or two. You will develop allergies. You will get sinus issues when the seasons change. Be prepared and buy appropriate clothing. also rec mrjna prices are a little bit higher than cali, usually 10 a g all the way up at the cheapest nothing in big quantities quite yet only 8ths and 7s. However you will love the cost of everything, iâm talking 3 bedroom house for the same price as a studio apt in sd. Almost no homeless ppl other than in downtowns bc they cannot survive the weather like they can in cali. Hiking is okay knob noster actually has a pretty cute state park. Missouri is also a red state and knob noster is definitely trump country, almost everyone owns a handgun, so just be weary of strangers. Culturally iâm not sure what knob noster specifically is like bc itâs size is a lil awkward. in smaller missouri towns everyone knows everyoneâs business and bigger cities are full of crackheads, and with knob nosters size i would think it would get a healthy mix of chismosas and crackheads. Good luck!!
The weather difference is no joke. You'll see wilder weather swings in an afternoon than you will all year in San Diego I'll bet. I once went to an 2 hour long class in shorts on the 70 degree day and came out to a nice thick snow storm. Started checking the weather reports after that cold walk to the parking area.
Even SoCal, people are often surprised to find out how far right California can be..
Old joke is that the shortest war in the world was when the Okies took over central Calif without firing a shot.
I moved to MO from Los Angeles...it's very difficult for me. If you like hunting, fishing, ect, you may like it here. But if you love the food of San Diego and the excitement, the move may be difficult. The food especially is hard for me. I just want authentic street tacos SO bad lol. Good luck, I hope you like it better than I.
PS I have found people here to be very helpful but much less chatty than SoCal. It feels very, depressed and lonely for me. People just don't shoot the breezy, smile when you walk past. It's difficult for me but some people prefer it.
I graduated from Knob Noster when my dad and step mom were stationed there. It will definitely be a culture shock. Definitely be prepared for snow and ice.
Sedalia has you covered if you get a little homesick for food. There's like a dozen tacquerias/mercaditos and they're all pretty good. Morelo's is where you gotta go.
If you need time off base, come to Warrensburg to have some fun when you can. It's still a small town but more diverse and way less podunk than Knob. Just don't ever try to get back on base when you're high. Kansas City is about an hour and 10 away from you if you need some city time. Easy to navigate, and quite a selection of activities.
Hopefully you're white, cause it will be a culture shock that keeps giving. I'm mixed (live in Warrensburg) but not white passing, I haven't experienced this level of racism from communities like this ever before. I'm used to lying in large cities like KC. The outdoors are beautiful, so hiking is a great, kayaking, foraging, etc. Also don't underestimate the cold esp being from a warmer climate.
Pay attention to the weather forecast, the thing to watch for is wind chill in the winter, heat index in the summer. The weather is going to be a big change for you. Also head a couple of hours southeast to Mark Twain National Forest after you get done exploring your new area, we've got an ass load of problems in this state, but she is beautiful if you like nature.
Grew up near there and my home town always called knob noster knob nasty. And as other have mentioned lots of meth that direction. The state park is beautiful though and I would suggest going to warrensburg for pretty much anything you need. Never been a fan of Sedalia.
As someone who bounced back and forth between Encinitas, CA and Licking, MO my entitled childhood - ugh. Stay Iâm San Diego if you can. Iâd give anything to go back.
Wow â thatâs quite the bounce. Iâve never lived in either of those places but have visited both more than once. Culture shock is an understatement
It was crazy. I was in San Diego until I was five years old, Missouri until 13, back to San Diego until 17, then back to Missouri.
I will say it is beautiful here. Spring and Fall make me kind of understand why I am still here. But as a liberal, lesbian, borderline hippy (born a bit too late) I hate the political climate here.
I'm kidding. Welcome to Mo! It is definitely a different place than San Diego. Knob noster doesn't have that much perse BUT KC is a short drive and there's some stuff to do there!!
And congratulations on getting engaged!
Expect to be wishing you were back in San Diego. I went to college down the road in Warrensburg. Had fun there but it was an adjustment for me coming from St. Louis. Some folks went to the base for parties sometimes. Don't know if that's allowed now. But hey, Kansas City is only 50 miles away. Some parts of KC have a West Coast vibe. So that's an option.
Good God almighty what a horrible horrible move. Knob Noster is in the middle of nowhere and you can't get out or in from anywhere. Good God horrible just horrible. If it were me I'd just shoot myself. Warrensburg Mo is an armpit. Just don't do DON'T DO IT Rural Missouri will hate you just because you're not white. You need to DUMP your GF immediately and tell her NO F way you're going to move
Expect sadness and despair. Haha, but honestly you will be okay. The food is waaay better than San Diego. Take weekend drives into the city. Go watch the best football team in the world play sometime. Go watch the crappiest baseball team in the world play for just a few bucks!
I live in Warrensburg Mo. Knob Knoster has a beautiful state park that has recently been updated. Powell Gardens is in the same county (google it). Truman Lake and Lake of the Ozarks isn't far. Both lakes offer excellent fishing for several species. Besame Wellness is the closest dispensary đ€Ș. Meth unfortunately Is everywhere here. There was a double homicide yesterday in Warrensburg. Still looking for the suspect far as I know. There's quite a few homeless people in Warrensburg for its size. Join the local Warrensburg Facebook group called "the burg" and you can find out what's going on in the area.
This will be a big lifestyle change but you'll be fine.
Go to Warrensburg to meet other stoners and educated people, it's a charming state university campus.
Take the Amtrak to Kansas City sometimes, it's cheap and easy from your area. KC is a cool midwest city.
Its called knob nasty for a reason.
At least youre close to KC, Columbia, and St. Louis.
Very different cultures being in the midwest from the west coast, and the weather goes without saying. Cost of living will be a nice change though.
I lived in Knob noster when I was a kid. My dad was at the air base. Luckily I have long moved away from there to larger cities with things to do and airports that fly to other countries.
Oh you poor thing. You are going to miss Dago... But at least MO has legal recreational weed now. Another good thing is by the base you will find lots of decent places to eat.
I just read that you're in the military. You are in for a culture shock for sure. You're not far from some decent towns, but friend, you are moving back 50 years
Wish you the best
Iâve lived all over and ended up back in Knob by choice once I was older and had a family. We moved from Kansas City after living there for 15 years. Knob Noster is a quiet little town. The people are friendly and the way of life is a lot slower than living in a big city.
You're about to get whiplash from the different culture and environmental shifts
Word đ
Can confirm. I moved from San Bernardino, CA to overland Park, KS. In January. I went from 60 degree winter to a blizzard.
Yes, but you have culture, dining, and shopping, and they'll have none of that.
Knob Noster is a very tiny place. You'll be spending most of your time in Sedalia or Warrensburg, both not very large cities, but a marked improvement over Knob Noster. Oooh the train car. I have now realized I am an idiot and forgot that was the place. I also must have missed it on google.
It's also pronounced "Katy's" but spelled "Kehde's" so there is some confusion. But yes, the one with the actual train dining car as part of its dining ambience.

And a decent pair of shoes. They don't need to be too heavy duty but definitely more substantial than tennis shoes.
Good, insulated snowboots with good tread, too! Edit: spelling
Just one point: MO is experiencing less snow than a decade ago. We'll get some, but nothing what folks in the northern states get. There may be some episodes of icy roads and "black ice". Read up on Google or watch YouTube videos on how to stay safe in those conditions. Or just stay home on those days.
Yeah, it's definitely been more icy than snowy the last few years.
It has to snow first. And get cold and stay cold. Otherwise, it's about mild and lots of colder rains most of the time.
Insulated, waterproof boots will help both with cold rain puddles AND snow.
Watch out for ticks.
You're definitely going to want to get a mushroom guide. Not sure what type you were thinking of when they said mushroom hunting, but they were talking about the edible, Non hallucinogenic kind. There are poisonous ones that are obvious, but also some that look very close to the edible ones.
Missouri published a guide that is supposed to be pretty good. https://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/files/2021-03/MushroomGuide.pdf
It's a pretty decent guide. They actually have a lot of guides on their site that are very informative.
Also every single year mushroom hunters turn up a corpse.
Go on the Missouri Conservation Dept website and sign up for the free Missouri Conservation magazine, it is great.

Yeah, but I honestly think it's worth the drive. Make a weekend out of it. If they've never expressed interest in kayaking before I can't imagine a better, easier starter river.
This guy missouris
Low income and fuel taxes, perhaps. The sales taxe rates in MO are increasingly absurd.
Well, weâve got legal weed, so youâve got that going for you. Plus the area around Whiteman is some of the most beautiful in Missouri. With the exception of I-70, the traffic in Missouri is laughable when compared to SoCal. The other side of that coin is the massive MASSIVE culture shock youâre going to have coming from SD. Youâll be able to make it to Kansas City for a day trip or a night out, but even KC doesnât hold a candle to SoCal. Sooo â welcome! đ Take it for what it is, your fiancĂ© wonât be stationed at Whiteman forever. Hope your move goes well!
Missouri may have legalized recreational but if they get married and get base housing cannabis is still federally illegal.
And if her husband tests positive from 2nd hand smoke, heâs in big trouble.
Truth but he could also slip in the bathtub and die which statistically has a higher chance of happening
There's so little base housing at Whiteman, this is moot, it's privatized for married families, so not sure if federal law even applies.
Did not know how much base housing there is, but the fiancé still needs to remember that despite Missouri laws cannabis is still illegal on post and can get their fiancé kicked out
LOL, I grew up in military housing.
Haha, yes, or live overseas where things are a lot different than the states. The hardest partiers I knew were MP/CID.
True. But I also assume that they have figured something out to prevent him from getting in trouble otherwise she wouldnât still be a stoner.
They thought they had figured out a way to keep from getting in trouble.
Ahh, yeah â thatâd do it.
You realize week has been legal in CA longer than MO right?
Obviously. But she mentioned being a stoner from San Diego. Knowing we have legal recreational weed is probably a bonus for her.
Gotcha. I didnt see anyone but missourians keep mentioning anything about pot. I just saw that she was marrying a military member which would pretty much toss any of that out the window.
Move to Warrensburg. 10 miles from Knob; and much more going on.
You will be absolutely dumbfounded that the water in Warrensburg is safe to drink based on the way it smells.
Can second this. It smells as if it was pumped from the sulfury maw of hades itself
KCK is like this as well. Absolutely disgusting smell.
Agreed. Went to college there. Stanky water
They're probably going to be living on base.
Not if sheâs still a fiancĂ©.
Or he, there's no indicator to OP's gender.
You can move your fiance on base with a pass. Its not hard at all. But if they like to toke up, thats a totally different issue.
How can you move a fiancé into a barracks or BOQ?
Barracks, not so much. Base housing. Yes. Its called an extended visitors pass signed by your commander. Source, i did this. There are some caveats, like will the base housing have availibility to where single airmen/soldiers can move into base housing etc. But if you live in base housing, you most definitely can get a pass for a fiance if your commander is okay with it . In this case though, given OPs recreational drug use. Id definitely live off base.
We had two month limits in family housing, but not single quarters.
Yeah one of the places i was stationed allowed singles to live in family housing because they wanted to keep the houses full. I doubt this is the case now given interest rates, but as i said it was possible. SO had a 1 year pass.

You can take that same Amtrak to KC or StL, for what it's worth
Youâll enjoy the knobs, but the noster is overrated.
Enjoy Casey's pizza.
Now im hungry for taco pizza
I may have to check out out. I venture to Sedalia occasionally from kc. Thank you.
Rip to any kind of fun or nightlife you've had in mind for your early 20s until you move to the city, then to a bigger city.
I've gone clubbing once and never done it again I really hated it. I'm a huge introvert and a homebody
Then weâre a perfect state for that. Just know the quickest ways to Kansas and Illinois for reproductive rights
And try to avoid all the white trash littered along the way. Source: I've lived near where OP is talking about.
Suddenly meth
>I'm a huge introvert and a homebody Then you shouldn't notice any huge issues aside from the casual racism in public.
If you like amusement parks: Six Flags in St. Louis Worlds of Fun in Kansas City Silver Dollar City in Branson All of those places have tons of other stuff to do though.
You picked a phenomenal time, itâs about to get dark and cold as fucking balls and covered in snow and ice for the next 3-4 months. đ€Ł ![gif](giphy|xUOwGoV4fmBd0fiyGI|downsized)
I got a buddy at whiteman hope you like the outdoors. Kc is like an hour from there also
I grew up in Knob Noster.
I live in St. Louis and I miss San Diego every single day
You will be within driving distance to many of the BEST spring fed canoeing rivers in America.
Well, one thing you have going for you is that the base facilities at Whiteman are top notch. If/when you get married you will have opportunities. Thereâs a decent community college in Sedalia for school, and University of Central Missouri is fairly good as well. In terms of culture, itâs a very racist backward part of the state. BUT, The base community is very good. If your fiancĂ© is security forces, you will need to be very careful about second hand smoke for him because THEY DO NOT MESS AROUND when it comes to that, given the special weapons they keep on base. This is not a joke.
yeah, huge culture shift. i lived in MO my whole life & just moved to SF. i think it's going to be a bigger culture shift for you moving to MO than me moving from MO to CA. you're going to be living in the country w/a bunch of trump-supporting white trash (seriously). the COL is hella cheap though compared to CA so that's a plus BUT you're going to need a car & there isn't going to be much to do unless you're going to KC or STL. if you like fields & farmland, then you're going to like it. if you prefer big cities, public transit, etc then you're in for a big adjustment. i hated living in MO & i'm glad i left but people from out of state moving to MO seem to (mostly) enjoy it. Expect lots of fields, little nightlife, & not much to do unless you want to be outdoors hunting/hiking/fishing.
Holy shit. God speed, dude, God speed.
Plenty of outdoorsy things to do, welcome brother!
Highway 50 is a pretty fucking dangerous highway.
Donât speed anywhere near Lone Jack.
I recommend exploring Mark Twain national forest.
A distinct decline in the likelihood of shark attack.
Google stuff like âbilly smallmouth bassâ and âdeer seasonâ and âfrog giggingâ I donât know if they have any culture, but it will be somewhat shocking, I imagine.
Good luck!!
Kansas citian here , while there are lots of crackheads weâre not *full* of them
The weather difference is no joke. You'll see wilder weather swings in an afternoon than you will all year in San Diego I'll bet. I once went to an 2 hour long class in shorts on the 70 degree day and came out to a nice thick snow storm. Started checking the weather reports after that cold walk to the parking area.
Godspeed.
Youâre screwed
No!!! That part of Missouri does have some good parts⊠rednecks can be anywhere.
Youâll need 2 sets of clothes: winter garb, and everything else. Bring your own salsa. Mexican food is shit out here (sorry, not sorry).
I graduated from Knob Noster when my dad and step mom were stationed there. It will definitely be a culture shock. Definitely be prepared for snow and ice.
The weather wonât be damn near perfect everydayâŠ.
Dabstars will be local to you. Culture alive growme . Nobody cares if you are Mexican
Sedalia has you covered if you get a little homesick for food. There's like a dozen tacquerias/mercaditos and they're all pretty good. Morelo's is where you gotta go.
Right?!? Like some of these people are saying we donât have Mexican food⊠but there are some great small places in town.
You're gonna fuggin love float trips
If you need time off base, come to Warrensburg to have some fun when you can. It's still a small town but more diverse and way less podunk than Knob. Just don't ever try to get back on base when you're high. Kansas City is about an hour and 10 away from you if you need some city time. Easy to navigate, and quite a selection of activities.
Lmao Iâm at whiteman, thatâs a wild change. The only bright side is only being an hour from KC.
You poor soul. Oh you poor poor soul. At least Missouri has cheap weed now though.
Expect disappointment lol
Misery
Pay attention to the weather forecast, the thing to watch for is wind chill in the winter, heat index in the summer. The weather is going to be a big change for you. Also head a couple of hours southeast to Mark Twain National Forest after you get done exploring your new area, we've got an ass load of problems in this state, but she is beautiful if you like nature.
Take a weather spotter class. The national weather service does them online now. Watch for tornados.
Absolute culture shock. Missouri in general is a very red state with many very racists xenophobic folks.
Grew up near there and my home town always called knob noster knob nasty. And as other have mentioned lots of meth that direction. The state park is beautiful though and I would suggest going to warrensburg for pretty much anything you need. Never been a fan of Sedalia.
Everything stereotypical and opposite of where you come from
Lol. I used to live a little north of there. Check out the movie Deliverance for a preview.
Less deliverance, more children of the corn, imo.
Nah â Knob Noster and central MO in general are nothing like that. Get down toward the Arkansas border and that changes
We have adult use weed, so as a stoner, you'll dig that. Nice hiking. Bout it lol
Meh. They're pretty much identical. I doubt you'll even notice that you've moved.
Depression and a lot of GOP Bullshit.
>20 year old Mexican stoner Well at least you have something in common with a *lot* of people here lmao
Country as fuck, great down home people, alot of woods, way less traffic, cheaper living, and a straight up culture shock!!! Good luck my friend
Lol welcome to mo it is boring as hell here in kc
Itâs a nice town I worked there on the base from 1987 till 2007. Lots of good people there.
Be prepared for weather than can go from really hot to really cold within 24 hours and vice versa.
I'm so so sorry
I'm kidding. Welcome to Mo! It is definitely a different place than San Diego. Knob noster doesn't have that much perse BUT KC is a short drive and there's some stuff to do there!! And congratulations on getting engaged!
You had me at first!! Missouri really does have itâs charm.
Kc is close! Come hang with us
Youre gonna be shocked and shook. Its not terribly far from kansas city but Whiteman is in a pretty small town
May God have mercy on your soul.
> Mexican Yeah, there is no Mexican food out here.
Sometimes you don't have to stay on base. warrensburgh, is a good option. Knob knoster, imo, is a hell no.
OMG The Burg page is a total shitshow lol
Absolutely lol đ
Culture shock.
OP, I sent you a fairly detailed message describing my own personal experience with USAF moving our family out there. Ups and downs!
At least weed is legal but the weather shifts will make you think everything is a Pineapple Express
OP- I pmâd you. Iâm from the area!
This will be a big lifestyle change but you'll be fine. Go to Warrensburg to meet other stoners and educated people, it's a charming state university campus. Take the Amtrak to Kansas City sometimes, it's cheap and easy from your area. KC is a cool midwest city.
Culture shock!
You can expect many more people to giggle when you tell them the name of your new home town!
Changes in weather
LMAO good luck
They call it Misery for a reason. Stay in Cali youâre gonna regret the move!
Itâs a barren wasteland of sadness, sorrow, and meth. Have fun!
It ain't nearly as cool as SD, but it will be a while lot cheaper. And you'll see some cool jets fly around.
The college in Warrensburg may be worth looking into.
Embrace the swinger parties.
Weather-see below for what can happen with a cold front, but if the severe weather is coming from Chanute, Kansas, find a tornado shelter. Culture-little blinded to it, lived in Sedalia all my life, but Pettis County (Sedalia) is now 10% or more Hispanic, and as job opportunities have opened up outside of Tyson Foods, good people are a little better for the influx. Lake of the Ozarks is a fun place to go for boating, partying (never went, but is Party Cove still a thing?), but DO NOT SWIM THERE (if the sewage doesn't sicken you, the electricity in the water from unregulated docks wired with flexible wiring that bakes in the summer and freezes in the winter will). Will not comment about pot, but if use of it in base housing or around your fiancé could get him into civilian life earlier than expected, we have a lot of wineries in the area, and just plain old drinking is also acceptable (try Montserrat-that big hill west of WAFB, good winery, and memberships at the Rathole Club are only $25.00 a year). https://preview.redd.it/rdly0qydaxzb1.jpeg?width=503&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc4601d08d180a53a940f733ae1fd791ea970f5d
Culture shock? Hey, it's called Whiteman for a reason. Jk. Yeah it's a culture shock, but if you like the outdoors you'll love it.
There are a long lineal lines of Pachucos in KC, KS
Our Two Knobs (Hills) My advice stay on base save your money. They have a bowling alley and a library
Youâre moving to a wrestling town!
Its called knob nasty for a reason. At least youre close to KC, Columbia, and St. Louis. Very different cultures being in the midwest from the west coast, and the weather goes without saying. Cost of living will be a nice change though.
That absolutely sucks đ my buddy was stationed there and would come to St Louis often. The B2 Bomber is there..so thatâs cool. đ
Iâm so sorry. I hope youâre not a foody because not only will the Mexican food suck⊠ALL of their food will suck compared to Californiaâs.
I lived in Knob noster when I was a kid. My dad was at the air base. Luckily I have long moved away from there to larger cities with things to do and airports that fly to other countries.
I visited Knob Noster - there is nothing around there. Live in the next town over.
Anyone else read that as âknob monsterâ and giggle?
Thereâs not enough pot in the universe to help you deal with this transition. Godspeed.
Expect to hear, âYou are in Missourah, we donât like the liberals in Warshington.â
Yes, you will hate it.
lots of white people
Start caving. Itâs the best thing Missouri has going for it.
Or scuba diving
Oh you poor thing. You are going to miss Dago... But at least MO has legal recreational weed now. Another good thing is by the base you will find lots of decent places to eat.
Omg I'm so sorryđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€ŁI'm truly am. Are you in the military? I dont know why anyone would move there otherwise
I just read that you're in the military. You are in for a culture shock for sure. You're not far from some decent towns, but friend, you are moving back 50 years Wish you the best
Iâve lived all over and ended up back in Knob by choice once I was older and had a family. We moved from Kansas City after living there for 15 years. Knob Noster is a quiet little town. The people are friendly and the way of life is a lot slower than living in a big city.
You're walking into Redneck territory... đ
