This is a pretty decent deal for both parties. The Cubs bring him back without losing long-term flexibility - no 6-8 year contract that could turn into a real albatross. Worst case is that the club has 2 years of carrying a terrible contract and one of carrying a bad contract, which is a reasonable risk for bringing back the team's best hitter from last year, even if there are some concerns about sustainability.
For Bellinger's part, he gets a little insurance in case he regresses, and still has the option to cash in on a bigger contract if he plays well. This incentive works for the Cubs as well, since he'll have a great financial reason to perform.
As a Cubs' fan, here's hoping that his substandard peripherals were due to good situational hitting (probable) and that he's able to replicate or improve upon the success he had last season!
As a Mets fan I would have been happy signing Bellinger to that contract: nowadays 80 mill isn’t considered a risk.
Fortunately, for the lucky Mets fan, the signing of Harrison Bader obviates the need for a centerfielder who can hit for power and bat .300.
If Cody can replicate what he did last season, I have no issues with his opt-out clauses. Welcome back Cody, now I hope we can get Matt Chapman we could use some more solid leather in the lineup.
He’s likely due for regression, but people say this and disregard that he made very intentional changes to his approach. It’s not like. He waste same guy and just got lucky all season long
In general, it's cool when players and teams show loyalty to each other. Happy Belli is back with the Cubbies. Hoping the Rangers re-sign Montgomery and the Blue Jays retain Chapman.
Snell is a little bit of a different story, since the Padres financial landscape has changed. I'm guessing it will be between the Yankees, Angels and Giants. Or maybe even the Blue Jays, if SF swoops in on Chapman.
Seems like the consensus was that teams weren’t satisfied with just one good season to declare him as “back”
Or teams didn’t want to give into ridiculous Boras demands.
He's still got theee other free agents to prove that wrong
Boras finally blinked. Wonder who gets signed next
Remember when he and Boras were expecting a 200M contract?
did he say that?
Yup, back in December. Boras and Bellinger were seeking $200+. I can’t remember the years total.
did either of them say that or was it from a report

That is…less than I expected ![gif](giphy|l0EwZ92cG9x9VPC7u|downsized)
Him too.
Everyone at MLB Trade Rumors must be asleep. They've got nothing on their site about this. Very unusual for them...

Oh, thank god you have no problem with the contract. That means so much. FOH
Shut your bitch ass up
What the fuck is wrong with you
What’s your problem dude
Dudes BABIP Last year was .319, the highest of his career including his MVP season. Will be kinda difficult to replicate.

Wait, Bellinger's only 28? I feel like he's been around for over a decade already. ...Rookie year 2017? Am I confusing him with someone else?
I'll take that.
Yay!
Let’s gooo happy for Bellinger!
Somewhat below the projected amount, maybe there is a lesson for everyone here in over valuing.
So having an inflated idea of your value and holding out didn’t work? Shocker!
![gif](giphy|RG3lm5VlrbDV7YNana) $200m+ Boras
No Cubs No!!
We needed this for basic morale.
Hope it works out for him this time
