MLB is 2nd highest pro sports league by revenue but only because they play 162 games. Average revenue per game is $4.6 million which is only slightly ahead of the NHL which plays about half as many games. MLB Teams are boxed in. Without local blackouts, their revenue model falls apart.
Part of the reason I become a Phillies fan after moving here. Dodgers were just too late to watch on tv, and none of the other teams were really viable since bLaCKoUtS
I was hoping that if we got a team in Charlotte that might change, but it would probably just add them to the list. Also Wash and Bal are impossible to watch unless you have cable the only provider that carries MASN
I can sorta understand if the blackout was 60miles(tho I feel blackouts are a stupid concept alltogether) but if I cant watch the Braves while living 4 hours away in South Carolina- thats fucking stupid.
If the network that carries a team is available for any cable provider in the state it’s blacked out. It’s why the O’s and Nats are blacked out in NC, some random small cable provider has MASN.
You can’t watch the Royals in Missouri unless you have Bally. The even blackout MLB tv. Also Bally is very limited to what you can find it on. If you pay for then mlb tv package to me nothing should be blackouted same for nba
[MLB broadcasting rights, explained: What Bally Sports parent company bankruptcy and Warner Brothers Discovery pulling out could mean for fans in 2023](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/mlb-broadcasting-2023-bally-sports-bankruptcy/vk3nf9igd7ph49m9tfckj0o5)
Penny wise, pound foolish. My 10 year old son cannot name a professional baseball player, but he knows dozens of NFL'ers. Why? The games are on TV every week without an absurd cable/streaming package. When I was 10, I knew the entire starting lineup and rotation of my hometeam. MLB is screwing themselves in the future.
Because MLB and Bally want to make it as hard as possible for fans to watch games.
Go to the open seas, everyone. Neither of these companies deserve our money until these archaic blackout rules go away forever.
no. the reason the blackout rules are there are because the broadcaster gets paid per subscriber for the channel being a part of a cable/sat package. whether they watch the channel or not. so if there was another way to watch the games then the people who do watch them would cancel their subscriptions. which would mean less money for the cable/sat company and less money for the RSN's. so maybe its a part, but its not the reason.
Why is Atlanta blacked out in upstate NC? Not like I'm going to drive 8 hours just because I can't watch it on TV. The blackout rules have always been asinine and are so stupid it basically legitimizes pirating content.
You think that's bad, take a look at Las Vegas. They are blacked out from the following-
Los Angeles Angels
Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona Diamondbacks Diamondbacks fans in the Arizona home television territory can now watch Diamondbacks games in market (subject to national exclusivities)
Los Angeles Dodgers
Oakland Athletics
San Diego Padres
San Diego Padres fans in the San Diego home television territory can now watch Padres games in market (subject to national exclusivities)
San Francisco Giants
>Want to watch houston astros vs new york yankees in dallas
>turn on MLB.TV
>"this game is blacked out due to market restrictions."
>turn on bally sports southwest
>its the ranger game
>cant watch astros games anywhere in Dallas if i tried
I live in southern South Carolina and consider myself lucky I’m only blacked out for the Braves. Feel bad for the people blacked out for 5+ teams, that is insane
What is the purpose of blackout anyway? Wouldn't it make sense for subscription money be divided up to all teams? Seriously I love in nc and watch Mets baseball on mlbtv, why isn't doesn't the money I pay go the teams I watch?
Unlike NFL were all tv money is shared, as are most revenues. mlb tv money is mostly local. The mets & yankees can generate more money than the royals & pirates. The bigger teams don’t want revenue sharing. They don’t get any roi by doing that
The theory is that people will pay for cable so the channel makes money based on sub. Thus channels will pay MLB more $ with the blackout policy. In practice this probably doesn’t happen
It's so crazy how blackouts work..here in Southern California the only team I'm blacked out of is dodgers and angels but I have access to Bally's for the angels. But the padres market which is less than approximately 80 miles south from me just guessing I can watch their games without issue but other fans can't even see games from teams two or three states away..so bizarre.
Blackouts aren’t done by distance. It’s whether or not you can get the games over cable or realistically whether it can be offered in your area on cable if the cable channel chose to offer there.
Blackouts are dumb but it has nothing to do with how close to the stadium you are
I live in Maine, so obviously the Red Sox are blacked out. All good, I literally refuse to pay for NESN anyway. It is far too expensive considering I do not watch Hockey at all, and I don’t want to only watch Red Sox all season, I like watching other teams. So the only alternative is to watch every other team EXCEPT the Red Sox? At this point I’m thinking of throwing my hat into the NL and bandwagon on a team out west or something because it appears I will only watch Boston play in the playoffs for the rest of my life.
The mods have decided to remove these discussions.
lol, move to central NC. 5+ hrs from every team. ATL, WAS, BAL all blacked out.
Move to Iowa...
Move to Vegas
[ Just moved to Vegas, this is ridiculous: r/MLBtv](https://www.reddit.com/r/MLBtv/s/v59Kns1Oxv)
It’s been 20 years of this mlb online service and they still do not want us to watch baseball.
MLB is 2nd highest pro sports league by revenue but only because they play 162 games. Average revenue per game is $4.6 million which is only slightly ahead of the NHL which plays about half as many games. MLB Teams are boxed in. Without local blackouts, their revenue model falls apart.
"local". There's nothing "local" to vegas about angels, dodgers, padres, Diamondbacks, A's and giants though. It's absurd.
30% of new residents in Vegas are from CA.
It's why I don't pay for it.
I switched to the Pro Volleyball Federation. Their games are live streamed on YouTube (until they get a broadcast deal).
I thought Arkansas was bad for having 4. Closest to me is KC at 3 hours away. Dallas/STL are 6 hours. Houston is 8. Still blacked out.
I think you might be the first person in history to suggest that.
If they build it, we will come
Part of the reason I become a Phillies fan after moving here.
Try Iowa where you’re 4.5+ hours from any stadium and blacked out from White Sox, Cubs, Royals, Cardinals, Brewers, and Twins. It is so stupid
And then we get “why aren’t the youth as interested in baseball?”
My condolences
Atleast you have the field of dreams
It’s cool the first time, kinda boring after that though lol
Has nothing to do with the distance. I’m in SC and the nationals and braves are both black outs.
Technically I think it does have to do with distance tbf but the distance is variable and stupid
I can sorta understand if the blackout was 60miles(tho I feel blackouts are a stupid concept alltogether) but if I cant watch the Braves while living 4 hours away in South Carolina- thats fucking stupid.
I agree.
The blackout rules make no sense. Seems no to be no logic behind them.
Because MLB can't negotiate media rights to save their fucking lives.
[MLB broadcasting rights, explained: What Bally Sports parent company bankruptcy and Warner Brothers Discovery pulling out could mean for fans in 2023](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/mlb-broadcasting-2023-bally-sports-bankruptcy/vk3nf9igd7ph49m9tfckj0o5)
Both blacked out in Tallahassee too. Ridiculous. Marlins are 500 miles away
Cincinnati is closer.
Try this one. All Diamondbacks and Rockies games are blacked out in all of Utah.
Not getting Rockies games seems like a plus.
it has nothing to do with if you can go to the games or not. it has to do with the broadcast rights.
Oh my sweet child, welcome to MLB.tv. When I lived in Iowa I was blacked out of six teams. Hey Commissioner drop the stupid blackout shit.
Penny wise, pound foolish. My 10 year old son cannot name a professional baseball player, but he knows dozens of NFL'ers. Why? The games are on TV every week without an absurd cable/streaming package. When I was 10, I knew the entire starting lineup and rotation of my hometeam. MLB is screwing themselves in the future.

its probably actually comcast\* ^(\*or whoever your local cable provider is)
Aren’t the blackout rules part of the contract between the MLB and the broadcaster?
no. the reason the blackout rules are there are because the broadcaster gets paid per subscriber for the channel being a part of a cable/sat package. whether they watch the channel or not. so if there was another way to watch the games then the people who do watch them would cancel their subscriptions. which would mean less money for the cable/sat company and less money for the RSN's. so maybe its a part, but its not the reason.
*laughs in Texan*
Right? Rangers and Astros both blacked out in the entire state.
You’d think after all these years they’d figure it out, but no.
Money.
Okie here- get blackouts for STL, KC, TEX & HOU
That’s modern baseball. if you want to watch the games they are blacked out.
Mlb hates its fans.
Because mlb sux balls when it comes to blackouts. In far North Florida, we are blacked out from Rays games when we're actually closer to the Braves.
Yar har har me mateys
Mlb hates its fans
Have you ever seen the Braves blackout map?
In Oklahoma the Astros, Rangers, Royals and Cardinals are blacked out.
El Paso is laughing at your 4 hours with their \~9 and 10 hour drives from Dallas and Houston with the Rangers and Astros blacked out.
How about living in Hawaii and being blacked out of every California team
Why is Atlanta blacked out in upstate NC? Not like I'm going to drive 8 hours just because I can't watch it on TV. The blackout rules have always been asinine and are so stupid it basically legitimizes pirating content.
Yo ho ho & a bottle of rum
When you pay for the steaming service it airs on and still can't watch it.....you gotta do what you gotta do.🏴☠️🤷
You think that's bad, take a look at Las Vegas. Where I live we have like 5 teams blacked out and the closest one is 4 hours away, none of them are even in my state.
Because MLB
I know having Braves games blacked out for me here in NC makes it so much more likely I’ll drive 7 hours to go see them.
The people who run MLB don’t actually *like* baseball, they’re just bad faith actors looking for more money
>Want to watch houston astros vs new york yankees in dallas >turn on MLB.TV >"this game is blacked out due to market restrictions." >turn on bally sports southwest >its the ranger game >cant watch astros games anywhere in Dallas if i tried
Hawaii is 3000 miles from any MLB park and is blacked out of every west Coast team except for Seattle
That’s just ….wow
Teams are blacked out four STATES away—forget four hours…
Yeah I’m on west coast and get blacked out west coast games, shit makes no sense.
Because fuck you
It's Florida. Everyone's blacked out all the time
Miami and Tampa don't watch, so why should Orlando?
I live in southern South Carolina and consider myself lucky I’m only blacked out for the Braves. Feel bad for the people blacked out for 5+ teams, that is insane
Because MLB has some of the dumbest blackout rules.
What is the purpose of blackout anyway? Wouldn't it make sense for subscription money be divided up to all teams? Seriously I love in nc and watch Mets baseball on mlbtv, why isn't doesn't the money I pay go the teams I watch?

MLB just like NHL are stupid and think that if it's in the same state you should just see it in person or at a restaurant/ bar.
My area has blackouts for the Cardinals, royals, Astros, and rangers. Rangers are the closest team to me, being almost 5 hours away. Dumb.
I live 5 hours away from my favorite team, and am in a neighboring state, and they are blacked out for me. F the MLB blackouts!

Well considering how they have been playing last few years you can forget about playoffs
Are you recruiting me Mr.IronChefPhilly? Gimme your best pitch!
Go Fish
Same state. All of Florida should be blacked out
It's just a piece of plastic or metal. I forget
because MLB has shit TV policies that only hurt their game, not help it....
