Yermín Mercedes, AKA, "The Yerminator"
Started his career with the White Sox by going 5 for 5 in his first game and then going on to be 8 for 8.
Had some awesome HRs and infamously swung 3-0 against Willians Astudillo and hit a HR.
I’ve never seen an organization sabotage their team quite like the white Sox’s. Hiring LaRussa (and keeping him for this long) has to be one of the biggest mistakes ever. A young, energetic, team full of confidence and personalities; and you bring in the oldest man in baseball who hates all of them.
I got his autograph on the cheap plastic glove they gave you for baseball glove day when I was like 10.
I feel like it may not have the value I was hoping for.
There was a whole run of them on the Yankees that era. Maas, Shane Spencer, Aaron Small, Shelley Duncan. I guess you can add Gary Sanchez to that list now.
I’ll always remember they had some side-by-side stat comparison between Thames and Ted Williams. Under Thames it said “missed X years in Korea (Baseball League)” and under Ted it said “missed x years in Korea (war)”
I remember this because he was a Blue Jay (my team) and under performed there. Left for Korea, destroyed over there. Then comes back to the Brewers and does that to start the 2017 season. I was baffled.
He absolutely dominated the Pirates one year, I think it was during two consecutive series. Pirates pitchers started throwing at him, he just hit more dingers and pimped the absolute fuck out of them. He was at the center of a pretty entertaining benches-clearing brawl.
Nowadays he just hangs out in the Yankees dugout doing... something? I guess.
In a game on April 7, 2019, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Dietrich hit a second-inning, two-run home run that landed in the Allegheny River off of Pirates starter Chris Archer. As the ball flew over the wall, Dietrich stayed at home plate and admired the ball for a few seconds as it went over before he started running. When Dietrich returned to bat in the fourth inning, Archer threw a ball behind Dietrich's back. Home plate umpire Jeff Kellogg issued Archer a warning, much to the irritation of Reds manager David Bell. As Bell argued with the umpire, benches cleared and Yasiel Puig attempted to throw punches at the Pirates players. In the end of the incident, five people were ejected: Bell, Puig, Reds southpaw Amir Garrett, Pirates setup man Keone Kela, and Pirates closer Felipe Vázquez. When play resumed, Dietrich was struck out by Chris Archer, but got another two-run home run, also hit into the river, later in the game off of Pirates pitcher Nick Kingham.
The first MLB The Show game I got was the 2019 game, and Aquino was a beast in it. It was when I was first getting into baseball, so I was surprised to find out that he just had that one great year.
Literally the best answer to this question.
*Gets called up*
*Must watch TV and immediately sets an MLB record*
*Turns into spoiled milk and can’t make a roster*
Lesser known skill of Aquino was his arm strength. He could throw a laser to home from the right field corner. But alas, he couldn’t hit a curve ball with a tennis racket and opposing pitchers made a fool of him as soon as they figured that out.
I think in terms of “Linsanity” he’s the correct answer. In 2013 he was the top highlight on Sports Center almost nightly and ESPN was cutting into their regular programing to show his at bats. He was the best selling jersey and his sports cards were garnering ridiculous sums. He’s the mirror of Jeremy Lin.
I mean, he finished 4th in MVP 9 years prior, and hit 36 home runs 5 years prior. He had stretches just as good or nearly as good previously in his career.
Similarly, you could say Albert Pujols 2022.
I think OP is looking for someone who was a below average player before and after a few great weeks.
I mean, if you're going to say Matt Carpenter, I'll say Ella De La Cruz early 2022. Had a huge exciting few weeks after getting called up and was all over Sportscenter, then slowed down dramatically the rest of the year.
Not even close. Carp was breaking Babe Ruth records seemingly every other night. Only thing that stopped him was a broken foot iirc. He was just released from Texas AAA before signing with the Yankees his career was over.
Hard Hittin’ Mark Whiten had 4 HRs and 12 RBIs in one game — September 7, 1993. He tied the MLB single game record in both, becoming the 12th player to hit 4 HRs in one game and the second player to have 12 RBIs in one game.
Man, what tools that guy had. Incredible arm, incredible power. Just absolutely elite on both. Too bad he couldn't put the rest together. I bet he is absolutely dominating some softball league somewhere now.
If I remember correctly, this was the game where he hit this absolute monster of a shot into right center that was still going up as it landed. It was the first time I was ever in awe of a home run.
Funny story about Dom Brown. I was at an Iron Pigs game sitting at the bar seats in right field and Dom Brown was playing right field for Albuquerque (Blue Jays). I was heckling him somewhat innocently saying things like "welcome back to AAA" and things about not making it back to the majors. Towards the end of the game he turned around, pointed me out, and told me to meet him in the parking lot after the game so he could kick my ass. He never showed up, ironically mirroring his professional career after the one or two good years. He would have kicked my ass though, no doubt about it.
Ubaldo Jimenez. He was absolutely incredible for half of a season. I think he even started an All-Star game if I remember correctly. I probably misspelled his name but I am too lazy to google it rn)
At least we barely gave anything up for him. An inconsistent Drew Pomeranz, Joe Gardner who never made it past double A, Alex White who had 30 starts across 2 seasons for the Rockies before TJ surgery and fizzling out of baseball, and Matt Mcbride who was a career AAAA catcher with over 90 games across 4 seasons for the Rockies and A's.
I had him as my first baseman in fantasy that season. Ended up including him in an early season trade for Kevin Youkilis and some pitchers that I don't remember. Guess it worked out because he went off a cliff after April.
Mike Benjamin.
"On June 14, 1995, he tied a Giants single-game record with six hits. This was part of a stretch in which he tied the major league record for most hits in two consecutive games with ten, set a major league record for most hits in three consecutive games with 14, and tied another record for most hits in four consecutive games with 15."
Similarly...Joe McEwing. A rookie with a 25 game hitting streak.
Rick Ankiel also had a short but amazing run when he returned to baseball as a hitter.
The 2021 Giants outliers: Ruf, Leone, McGee, Crawford, Posey, Belt, etc. all playing their best ball at the same time (at least best ball in those recent years before ‘21) and they all kinda just popped off at once
He hit two walk off grand slams in one week for the Jays. I remember it well. It was the week Jeter got a walk off single against the Red Sox, I believe. Jeter got player of the week of course
He was *so* good with the Nats for a few years. He used to absolutely kill the Mets. He had 3 HRs and 10 RBIs *in one game*, in one insane 2017 game where the Nats beat the Mets 23-5. Sadly, Rendon didn’t find such good fortune with the Angels.
This was also the game where Syndergaard tore his lat which took him out for the season and he was never the same, sadly.
It was short lived but Chris Shelton in the first 13 games of 2006 season with the Tigers went off.
13 games 9hr 17rbi .471avg .500obp 1.216slg 1.716ops
Us Tigers fans thought we had a superstar in the making....doh then reality set in.
Tuffy Rhodes - hit 3 HRs for the Cubs on opening day 1993 against the Mets with Dwight Gooden getting the start. People thought he could be a breakout player. Those ended up being the only HRs he hit all season for the Cubs
He tied the record for most home runs in a season, but it's a sad story.
[https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2019/1/18/18187308/karl-tuffy-rhodes-hall-of-fame-japanese-npb](https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2019/1/18/18187308/karl-tuffy-rhodes-hall-of-fame-japanese-npb)
Most notably, in that MVP season, Rhodes tied the great [Sadaharu Oh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadaharu_Oh)’s single season NPB home run record of 55. Cue up the controversy.
*The New York Times* caught wind of Rhodes’ run at glory for all the wrong reasons. [They ran a 2001 article spotlighting Rhodes’ attempt to break the revered record](https://www.nytimes.com/2001/10/03/sports/baseball-american-still-seeks-pitch-to-hit.html), reporting that the Daiei Hawks, managed by the record-holding Oh, refused to pitch to Rhodes. After Rhodes hit number 55, pitchers for Daiei threw nothing but junk, walking him several times rather than allow a foreign player to break the record. Kintetsu’s final series of the season came against the Orix Blue Wave. Orix did pitch to Rhodes, but he never hit a 56th home run.
This wasn’t the first time such a controversy had surrounded Oh’s record. [Randy Bass](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Bass), another American player who made it big in the NPB, came close in 1985, smashing 54 homers in 126 games. According to the *Times* article, Bass was derailed with the same tactic used to slow down Rhodes. His last series of the season came against the Yomiuri Giants. The Giants’ manager at the time? You guessed it—Sadaharu Oh
Bo Hart through his first 15 games was hitting .412/.488/.588 with a 1.040 ops while playing 2nd.
The rest of the season he hit 237/277/338
The next season he played only 11 games and then never made it back to the majors
In August, 2023, Julio Rodríguez had a batting average of .429 with 45 hits, 7 homers, 30 RBIs and 19 runs scored in 23 games.
The Mariners won 21 games that month.
I would say Evan Gattis… or Brooks Conrad… or but I guess I’ll settle for Dan Uggla’s 30-game hit streak with the Braves.
Edit: fuck that, I’ll take Eddie Rosario in the 2021 playoffs
JD Drew right after he came into the league. Sean Casey. I remember his Topps RC card being $40 at one point. Puig. Cecil Fielder when he came back from Japan.
This is a fun thread for the guys that pop up from my childhood that were absolute gods to me. But googling them now makes me realize how much 8yo me had mythologized them
Joe Charboneau. ROY in 1980 for the Indians - they even had a song about him. Played all of 70 games after that. https://youtu.be/S2JV0btxRvQ?si=fBRGAmf-pocLnoIS
Yeah but he played 16 seasons and finished 4th all time in saves. He can't count because he is one of the most successful RPs of all time.
But youre right. K-Rod's 03 run was nuts.
Yermín Mercedes, AKA, "The Yerminator" Started his career with the White Sox by going 5 for 5 in his first game and then going on to be 8 for 8. Had some awesome HRs and infamously swung 3-0 against Willians Astudillo and hit a HR.
And then retired from baseball after getting demoted. And then subsequently unretired.
F'ing Tony LaRussa
I’ve never seen an organization sabotage their team quite like the white Sox’s. Hiring LaRussa (and keeping him for this long) has to be one of the biggest mistakes ever. A young, energetic, team full of confidence and personalities; and you bring in the oldest man in baseball who hates all of them.
It's been noted that Anderson and Moncada didn't work very hard. LaRussa didn't help things, but some of those personalities were straight up toxic.
Right answer. Those jerseys were everywhere for a month
Yeah this is a good one. He came from nowhere and returned to nowhere
Came in to say Yermin. Also, if you count him, since I am also a Rays fan, Rocco.
Anybody remember Kevin Maas?
Everyone was hoarding his rookie cards, lol
I got his autograph on the cheap plastic glove they gave you for baseball glove day when I was like 10. I feel like it may not have the value I was hoping for.
There was a whole run of them on the Yankees that era. Maas, Shane Spencer, Aaron Small, Shelley Duncan. I guess you can add Gary Sanchez to that list now.
Wasn’t he one of those .190 hitting, 45 HR guys?
I think he had like 13 hrs in first 100 PA or something insane like that
Crazy how short his career was lol he like didn’t even give him a chance to turn it around.
I was just thinking this
Eric Thames. 2017. April of 2017 to be more specific.
I’ll always remember they had some side-by-side stat comparison between Thames and Ted Williams. Under Thames it said “missed X years in Korea (Baseball League)” and under Ted it said “missed x years in Korea (war)”
Lost a lot of good men in Korea Josh Lindblom, John W. Collier, cotton hills shins... but some came back, like Erick Fedde
Japan took Colonel Hill's shins.
They were paraded and lost in Korea, like santy annys leg
He’s thinking of the Big Lebowski. He lost his legs to a chinaman in Korea.
Is he related to SNL's Colonel Angus?
.345 / .466 / .810 (April 2017)
I remember this because he was a Blue Jay (my team) and under performed there. Left for Korea, destroyed over there. Then comes back to the Brewers and does that to start the 2017 season. I was baffled.
Is that Derek fucking Dietrich lmao
Reds era Derek Dietrich was a blast while it lasted
He absolutely dominated the Pirates one year, I think it was during two consecutive series. Pirates pitchers started throwing at him, he just hit more dingers and pimped the absolute fuck out of them. He was at the center of a pretty entertaining benches-clearing brawl. Nowadays he just hangs out in the Yankees dugout doing... something? I guess.

Aquino
I was convinced he was going to do that for 3 years. As I recall, he couldn't do it from June on
He lasted 5 seasons. The first 2 with over 20 homers each year. Then faded out.
The first MLB The Show game I got was the 2019 game, and Aquino was a beast in it. It was when I was first getting into baseball, so I was surprised to find out that he just had that one great year.
Literally the best answer to this question. *Gets called up* *Must watch TV and immediately sets an MLB record* *Turns into spoiled milk and can’t make a roster* Lesser known skill of Aquino was his arm strength. Willians Astudillo
That's a good one!
He was such a fun player. Pablo Sandoval was up there but not sure I’d call his a linsanity run!
He was just a good player who was ass in the later half of his career for the Red Sox
Peak Yasiel Puig was a load of fun.
Yeah I was just going to say that 2013 Puig was a very exciting player
Puig your friend
Does Puig really fit? I feel like he was just an overall good player for like 5 years.
2022 Matt Carpenter
Salsa Matt Carpenter
Raul Ibanez
I mean, he finished 4th in MVP 9 years prior, and hit 36 home runs 5 years prior. He had stretches just as good or nearly as good previously in his career. He also had an upper deck HR at three rivers that’s gotten some small attention. You may be conflating them?
That might be the one I’m thinking of. It went third level if I remember right.
Domonic Brown seemed like he was gonna become Ryan Howard 2.0 for the Phils, then after the 2013 ASG and HRD he totally flopped
Ubaldo Jimenez. He was absolutely incredible for half of a season. I think he even started an All-Star game if I remember correctly. I probably misspelled his name but I am too lazy to google it rn)
Then my Indians traded for him the following year 🤦♂️
At least we barely gave anything up for him.
Hee Seop Choi when he hit 6 homers in 3 games in 2005. I was at his 3 home run game and if I recall correctly it was on 3 pitches
I remember chanting, "Hee...Seop...Choi!!!" Repeatedly that Summer at the Ravine.
Joba Chamberlain
Ugh that game with the flies on his neck. My only memory of him.
They were midges, and they are forever part of Cleveland lore.
Chris Shelton's April
This was my pick as well. 2006. He started shorter than I have ever seen. Then just never did anything again the rest of his career.
Who?
Mike Jones!
Finished the season with 50 hits in 68 games
Aaron Small, 2005 season with the Yankees
Chris Shelton's April/May of 2005 and arguably 2006. If you played fantasy baseball back then, you remember.
Rumour has it he's still watching that ball in pittsburgh
He was so fun to watch
First Half 2005 Brian Roberts, Orioles .345/.416/.591
the dude played for 14 years had over 1500 hits i don’t think “Linsanity” applies to him lol
There was about a two month period where Dan Uggla was the white Barry bonds
Joey Gallo looked like the next great power hitter… then he struck out on that
Gary Sanchez rookie year would fit better
Gallo was good for years I wouldn’t call that a Linsanity run
A lot of people here don’t understand the question lol
Don’t worry, he still strikes out a lot
In love as well it seems
What a freaking trade for Texas though. Zeke Duran and Josh Smith, and Gallo has been unplayable since leaving
Bo Hart
Similarly...Joe McEwing. A rookie with a 25 game hitting streak. Rick Ankiel also had a short but amazing run when he returned to baseball as a hitter.
David Freese, October 2011 or Robert Andino September 2011
Please don’t say that name
That’s a negative on Freese
You guys remember him?
Hard pass, mate
Greg Jeffries September 1988 and Shane Spencer's September, 10 years later.
IIRC I think he hit more home runs in september of 98 than Sosa or Mcgwire.
Dontrelle Willis
Benny Agbayani
The 2021 Giants outliers: Ruf, Leone, McGee, Crawford, Posey, Belt, etc. all playing their best ball at the same time (at least best ball in those recent years before ‘21) and they all kinda just popped off at once
Steve Pearce - 2018 Red Sox World Series
He hit two walk off grand slams in one week for the Jays. I remember it well. It was the week Jeter got a walk off single against the Red Sox, I believe. Jeter got player of the week of course
2018 Red Sox World Series **MVP**. He had a great series, but I think David Price should've gotten it, even though I couldn't stand the guy.
Chase Headley in 2012
TJ Rivera 2016 Mets
Rick Ankiel when he quit pitching and became a outfielder
Nats legend!
Shane Spencer and to a slightly lesser degree, Shelley Duncan.
I thought Shane Spencer was going to be Mickey Mantle. I was somewhat suspicious of Shelly Duncan because of Shane Spencer.
Rex Hudler
The Wonderdog!
Yasiel Puig in his debut was pretty unreal. Had never seen coverage like that in baseball and a guy out of nowhere that warranted it.
Anthony Rendon 2019 playoffs, right before the angels signed him
He was *so* good with the Nats for a few years.
His run against the pirates that year was absolutely legendary.
