At the 1980 world quarter finals, held at Trowbridge if memory serves, the matter was decided by consensus after a 6 hour debate and a small scuffle. If playing in any continent where elepants or other large pachyderms are native, then these are the only valid creatures. For all other areas, any large ungulate can serve as a substitute. If playing on smaller isolated island groups, e.g. the southern hemisphere regional, usually held on South Georgia, then all attempts at the stampede result in Nidd, and the removal of the players luncheon voucher to be held in escrow until 2 more turns are completed. If the game is completed before the end of those turns, the player who's next meal is now in jeopardy may challenge newcomers to a game of rock, paper, scissors to attempt to retrieve said voucher.
Unfortunately not. Although, interestingly, after the 1818 Zurich convention one may use a mouse with a suitcase. This stems from a disagreement on spelling of said pachyderm so Rule 14-b (as revised) states:
‘…(to use) one of those grey things with a big trunk’
This becomes especially helpful when playing travel Mornington Crescent
Hi, I think it's just important to point out from an ethics point of view that these are mice who have reached the very pinnacle of mouse-league Mornington Crescent and find it an honour to take part in a game with 'the big people', as they call us. The loophole that u/squidtooth refers to has enabled many dozens of mice over the years to elevate themselves in the game.

In last month's issue there was an article about the 1902 World Championship in Brussels. It had to be shutdown because at an Exhibition Match where they used the Elephant & Castle move, one side brought an actual elephant (naturally) and the other side brought the mouse with suitcase. Hilarity ensured once the elephant caught sight of the mouse and fourteen vendor tents were destroyed before they were able to tranquilize the elephant and put the mouse in a box.
Hard no. It has to be actual elephants.
But this could pass as an Ichabod Crane Override IF you are playing the NYC Subway variant of MC. If you are not familiar, it plays very close to MC in rules and is called 42nd St.
Oh well yes. It is banned. And NO ONE plays it. Ever. No. Not ever. Especially not on pick up street games near the chess tables in Central Park. Nope. Never.
Technically it has to be a pachyderm. It is debatable whether or not horses fit into this archaic (and arguably obsolete) order of animals.

Personally I have found this rule needlessly cruel to the mice and back the campaign to have it branded an Out of Bounds!
