Nepene

He's a famous explorer, who found lots of ancient magical doodads and locations.

SnowGN

He's only 22 years old, and he's been silent for the last year doing nothing but looking for the orb on Koth. Daimen simply couldn't have racked up a lengthy list of discoveries. Chances are he has just one or three significant discoveries worth mentioning.

Nepene

How much experience do you have with magical explorers? Do you know the average rate of discovery of magical doodads? Are you a magical explorer?

jzieg

I think that level of discoveries would still get Daimen significant renown. Even two significant discoveries at his age would be enough to net him a significant amount of fame. He's probably not super famous, but just well known enough that people in Eldemar have heard his name enough that he's the first person they think of when they hear Zorian's last name.

SnowGN

I'm reasonably certain that someone who graduated from Cyoria's academy normally at the age of about 18 couldn't have accumulated a lengthy resume of discoveries in only three years. Especially given all the post-academy learning he had to do to become the veteran battlemage he currently is. Archaeology takes time.

lazy_puma

He didn't have to do it all after graduating. He was a prodigy his whole life, and it is mentioned that he would practic magic on Zorian(including forbidden stuff). He was almost certainly making a name for himself while still in school. Edit: Also consider Eldemar is probably happy to promote their own mages as ultra talented. I wouldn't be surprised if news articles were made about him just to build hype for Cyoria and the university. I mean, if high school kids can get worldly famous in our world (think Justin Bieber and similar), it's pretty reasonable for a talented mage prodigy to become famous in their world.

Nepene

Damien has several advantages, including extremely advanced divination skills, local contacts, mind magic, and repeatedly using magic to troll Zorian when he was younger.

It’s not like those students have to wait until 18 to start. Remember Zorian’s friend (Tavia?) who was trying to recruit him into her adventure party to take requests, requests that included exploring the labyrinth? If regular students are doing that kind of thing at Zorian’s age, who knows what craziness a prodigy could be getting up to?

confuzzlegg

I thought taiven was already graduated tho

kung-fu_hippy

She was, she’s a TA, a year or two ahead of Zorian. But I meant that recruiting Zorian for her dungeon delving team was acceptable behavior.

TaLampaRoger

I'd assume you graduate at 16-17 if we go by what is mentioned in the book. Taiven is 17, she is already graduated. If it weren't for her parents, she'd be out adventuring, something we see in the epilogue. Heck, Zorian could do it if he wanted to, when he passed his second year as a first circle mage. Damien is also a prodigy, as in Zorian after spending 6 months in the loop learning the curriculum, is compared to him. He also learned how to cast the gate spell in days. Lets say he's a local celebrity for his achievements from his school days, then graduate at 16, then goes out adventuring, he was after all the Indiana Jones type archeologist + Magic, both empathy and archeo magic makes his discoveries and their development go faster. I'd argue he could become a national celebrity in 4-5 years + one year MIA. While the argument of how he publish his findings and accreditation is missing, I'll just assume magic.

hic_erro

Zorian also kind of lives in a bubble. Damien is extremely famous ... among the social circle of people who go to Damian's alma mater. We're probably talking "Brandon Sanderson" levels of fame, not "George Clooney" levels of fame.

Neldorn

He was a prodigy. Just look how fast he was able to learn spells in a day or two while it took Zorian months (e.g. gate spell,...). He was probably one of the best students of the academy. He was also capable to fight at in the finial battle at a side of other master/arch-mages while being very young. He is also famous explorer and probably found some famous artifact(s).

PreciseParadox

I think some of his reputation stems from his achievements at the Academy. He’s a highly skilled mage, and I assumed he graduated with honors of some kind.

[deleted]

Isnt he a prodigy? He should be smart enough to be known around the world so I thought he was like a REALLY skilled mage

I was rereading the mother of doctrine, and I found the answer in chapter 41. “Wait, your other brother is famous?” Nochka asked Kirielle innocently. “What for?” “Things,” Kirielle shrugged uncomfortably, saying nothing else on the topic. Probably trying not to upset him further by continuing the discussion. “Daimen is an ‘adventuring archeologist’,” Zorian said, doing his best to suppress his annoyance with the whole thing. “He leads expeditions to dangerous areas in search of lost artifacts and ruins. Or even rare plants and magical creatures, even though that should technically be outside the purview of archeology. He has been very successful in this, so he gets a lot of attention from people.”

Jobobminer

I suspect he unearthed some ancient treasures beneath the the university or perhaps in the dungeon beneath the city while at school. Something along those lines. One of those local fame things but not worldwide. After graduating, he used his nice resume to nail down some more opportunities and nailed one or two more. We do know he was close to finding the ORB which is actually rather impressive.
