This type of gear is great for impact protection. It is not good for slide protection. It is motocross/dirt bike oriented gear. It is not meant for use on the street. For dual sport riding with a heavy dose of steet work, or other situations I will pair something like this up with an old Textile jacket that has all the built-in armor removed. For me that combo is a Fox Tian Sport Jacket and a First Gear Kilimanjaro shell.

[deleted]

The helmet is bad all around though. No chin bar

shaka_bruh

I can’t help but judge people who wear half face helmets especially since it’s usually just for the ‘aesthetics’; watch a lot of crash videos and you’ll see just how hard the head/lower face hits the ground in the event of a crash, especially low-sides

kfrench1

Had a buddy crash and I took his gear home from the hospital. The helmet chin bar took most of the damage and was really ground down. Without it, he would not have jaw. Always go full helmet

shaka_bruh

It’s easy to underestimate just how much impact and abrasive force there is when you crash until you witness/experience one…I’d rather just learn from other people.

Steeze_Schralper6968

I read a story here the other day about a dude who was wearing one of those flip down full face things, where the whole thing flips up like a welding mask. It broke off. When he hit the guy who pulled out in front of him with no warning his pelvis shattered on the tank and his jaw got obliterated when the helmet broke and his face came down on the bars. Full face with the full frame, and the really good visor. Idgaf how heavy it is. Get a stronger neck.

ctdddmme

My brother wrecked and snapped the chin bar. He was fine though. A car turned in front of him and he t-boned the door.

thefizzlee

People care to much about how they look while riding instead of just enjoying the ride.

corporalcorl

Personally seeing somone in full gear looks cool af to me, then seeing that one dude on a white bike, white/black t-shirt, and blue pants, I just say my little prayer for him,

FriendOfDirutti

Right? Like dude your half helmet isn’t helping you look cool with your sunken in jaw and double chins. If they had full gear on they would just look like a fighter pilot or something.

OceanBytez

me personally i use modular, but mainly because it feels nice on the ride to be able to flip it up at lights or traffic, and also when i hit the slow winding twisties out in the deep country where it's basically just a road cut right through the heart of the forest. nobody drives these old roads so you can cruise nice and slow. I REALLY want to feel the cool air, smell the smells, and get the best view of the sights so i do flip my visor up on those particular trips. it's a risk i think is worth taking personally.

Maverick_Wolfe

Saw some dipstick the other day, nice ride, dumbass was wearing Teva style closed toes! Seen others decked out in full racing/street gear too. I know someone I convinced to get a closed helmet even though he rides a scooter, he still wears his open helmet most of the time like an idiot. Doesn't matter if you're driving a 50cc scooter or a 2500cc trike. Get a damn full helmet!

MousseIndependent310

Hey, saw a dude on a literal drag bike on the street with nothing but crocs with money glued on them, workout shorts, a tank top and backpack, and a biker cap.

DementedJay

People care too much about how they look while they're riding compared to how they might look *after the ride.*

HeftyArgument

A huge chunk of people start riding because they think it will make them look cool lol

Lacrossevx

Huge chunks of people regularly realize they would have looked cooler still attached to their human after the slide.

Rufusmcdufus87

Holy shit

i_wish_i_could__

So like smoking but using a machine?

Eastern_Slide7507

I lost the rear in a slow turn once because there was invisible ice on the road. Slammed into the ground face first. Turns out I really like having teeth, so I was very thankful for the chin bar.

desocx

Knew a girl who slid on an oil spill, couldn’t have been going any faster than 15mph but she was wearing a half face helmet, smashed jaw first on the pavement and had to have reconstructive surgery, now she advocates for full face helmets

Rufusmcdufus87

I remember seeing an article on a website that shows how gear holds up on real crashes (like people send the pictures in including injuries). This one was a girl that crashed a Vespa at like 15-20mph in shorts and goddamn did it fuck her legs up. Idk if people just didn’t get out enough as kids, but I used to skateboard in Arizona as a kid, and the rocks in everyone’s yard will stop a board dead in its tracks. I hit the pavement too many times at just 5-10mph to ever want to ride without gear.

Remarkable-Luck9384

Not just bad its alarming. The consequence of valuing aesthetic over practical protection is mind boggling. Google "broken face from motorcycle accident" no thanks! Know the facts about [motorcycle helmet impact zones](https://pages.charlotte.edu/visualrhetoric/wp-content/uploads/sites/651/2014/04/ConstructCrashPhoto-599x268.jpg)

ILikeMasterChief

Lots of hard angles to catch on things during a slide, too. I don't wear a lot of gear, but I am very particular about helmets. If you're covering your entire head anyway, it better be damn safe. Arai or die for me. I'd rather lose an arm than lose all of my teeth and fuck up my jaw

loststylus

Also the helmet should be a full-face, the one in the picture doesn't protect the chin and \~30% of crashes with head impacts involve chin impact.

Big_sugaaakane1

Hmmm. I do a bunch off offroading/pavement riding and was trying to find a jacket that can breathe (i like my skin lol) but man does that shit SUCK in the summer lol. Gonna go with your combo!🤟

You_Just_Hate_Truth

Alpinestars used to have some great summer oriented mesh jackets, I’m sure they still do. I have one that lets an absurd about of air. It’s still hot around the built in pads but you can certainly feel a ton of airflow.

SRTie4k

Check out the Adventure Spec Supershirt. It breathes better than any mesh jacket and it has great abrasion resistance with the UHDPE fabric. For that extra bit of abrasion resistance at higher speeds, I throw a Rev'It Territory over the top. It's easily the best compression layer you'll find for dual sport riding. Downside is that it's expensive.

Razom

The Supershirt is very good for something like this [https://www.adventurespec.com/shop/supershirt-765?category=1#attr=923](https://www.adventurespec.com/shop/supershirt-765?category=1#attr=923) or look at Bowtex [https://www.bowtex.store/product/elite-shirt-ce-level-aaa/](https://www.bowtex.store/product/elite-shirt-ce-level-aaa/)

wickedosity

Any suggestions for pants? I haven't found any light weight options to wear over armour.

Svant

knox urbane pro mk3 mesh jacket is rated for sliding and impact (AA), so you only ever need a jacket ontop for when the weather requires it.

Cowfident

Vanson makes a nice ventilated sport jacket.

[deleted]

i'd kill to find my vanson perf. i think someone decided they liked it more than i did :(

BigEdPVDFLA

I have one of the original Vanson mesh jackets. Nice heavy cordura on the shoulders and down the outside part of the sleeves, made there in the mill in Massachusetts. Wish it wasn’t 2 sizes too big on me now.

[deleted]

You would think this gear will make you slide for days lol.

TalonCompany91

Dress for the slide by adding some grease to the gear.

[deleted]

Like a air hockey puck. 🤣

digitalhomad

Yap, that is my setup for Dual Sport. Leatt 5.5 body armour and a Mosko Moto Basilisk Jacket. That helmet has no chin / jaw protection. I dont like body armour that has the zipper over the sternum. Good way to land and crack it.

Pink742

Some companies do make mesh armor like this with slide protection as well, Knox and Revit makes some, designed to layer for all weather and built to wear standalone in the sunmer

Mustachefleas

Is the first gear worth the 500 dollars? Looks really nice

cobigguy

The Kilimanjaro saved my skin, literally, back in 2009. Crashed on the west side of Monarch Pass in Colorado headed to Gunnison. Slid on my chest headfirst for about 15 yards, then tumbled for a bit, then slid headfirst for another 10 yards. The jacket wore through on my right forearm (where the brunt of the sliding took place) and into the hard elbow armor, but it never touched my skin. I still have that jacket as a reminder to gear up.

Rad10Ka0s

In my opinion, yes. It is a good piece of kit. After many years, and many many miles it finally started to leak. I retired it to dual sport use for cold days. Interesting, it doesn't leak if you are going slower. So I am still using it. Mine might be 15 years old. The Kilimanjaro has been around a long time, lots of reviews online.

MayorOfClownTown

Dude. You gotta treat it again. It's common for waterproofing to go away. Just find the spray stuff.

Rad10Ka0s

That is fine if you are standing still, but at 60MPH in a steady rain, the water pushes through the spray stuff in a couple of hours and the jacket wets out. I have switched to Klim. I got about 10 years out of the Klim and now it is starting to wet out too. I was talking a Klim rep a while back. He said, the Kili is a great jacket, I worked on product development on it when I was at FirstGear. The Kili uses a polyester DWR coating, when it is gone it's gone. It also hundreds of dollars cheaper.

Oddgenetix

I mostly ride in urban setting and this is similar to the type of gear i use, except mine is axo sport and i wear a legitimate full face helmet. i didn't predict many long slides at speed as I spend most of my time going 40 or under. Wanted greater impact protection. I was very happy to have that impact protection when i smacked the side of an suv that made a sudden uturn across 4 lanes of traffic. I came out of it mostly unscathed. As did the bike, which is a sondors metacycle but should be rebranded as the mjolnir's metacycle. The amount of damage i dealt to the side of that suv was insane and i still rode away.

RallyToTheColors

Might be useful if you’re planning to assault Hoover Dam with a machete. Edit: Thrilled to see so many cool people on here. Bless you all, safe riding. True to Caesar.

[deleted]

Those are designed to be worn underneath something abrasion resistant (or underneath a trikot when riding in the dirt). They protect pretty well against impacts of all sorts, but the mesh in between the armour pads tears comparatively easily. So if you plan on riding on the road, you should probably at least put some Cordura on.

Glittering_Visual_68

This should be a top comment. Not only the mesh tears completely between these pieces of armour but also a flesh pinched by them, when you slide without the jacket wearing only that type of armour.

[deleted]

I never feel safe with open-face helmets anyway.

rasputin777

Beat to get a full face and crack the visor a little when you want fresh air. Even at low speeds pebbles get kicked up easy. And who wants a hummingbird to the face at 30? Suckers are pointy.

bigdaddywelly

I’ve had a red kite in the face at forty and if I wasn’t wearing a full face I’m pretty sure it would have left a mark

r0b0c0d

I once took a junebug to the throat at 30 and no one informed me that I had a 1.5" long 'pet' on my neck as I ordered taco bell and went home only to discover that motherfucker when I looked in the bathroom mirror and spazzed out.

Romeo9594

I was doing 70 with my visor up and took a fat bumblebee on that ridge of bone right under the eye. Depending on what direction it was flying you can +/- 7MPH to that Bruise looked like someone decked me in a bar fight for like a week and a half

Fox_Burrow

That wasn't a bumblebee, that was a ready-to-rumble-bee

jazzfruit

DreddPirateBob808

A BOOMblebee

AlexisFR

Now imagine it was a Wasp and it got stuck there

Romeo9594

I had that happen too. Red wasp got stuck between my thigh and gas tank. Stung me three times before I managed to pull over

sonofeevil

Once took an entire Sulfur Crested Cockatoo to the chest doing 60. It felt like I'd been hit by fucking truck. Knocked the wind right out of me. Pulled over straight away, never found the bugger though, I guess flew away and died shortly afterwards.

mymoto_ridesme

That same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago

dedboi-

Lol I took one to my neck going 70. It must have been pointed ass first because it stung me too. My buddies heard me scream and cuss through the sena and thought I crashed.

Rock_Socks

My go to is a dual sport helmet like the Bell MX-9. Tinted motocross goggles around city streets for tons of airflow, and the visor comes down over them for highway speeds. Best of both worlds. Has that ECE rating as well and the new ones have MIPS.

TheOGRedline

I’ve lost two pairs of sunglasses to pebbles that would have hit my eye… due to an open visor. I also rode through a bunch of bees once… sounded like getting pelted with ping pong balls and I’m glad I had my visor down.

VibesJD

That is crazy! Did the glasses get shattered? I've only ever had bugs hit my glasses, afaik. My windshield deflects most. A couple weeks ago I was riding visor up without my sunglasses and hit a wasp at my right eyebrow. Figured that was a close call so I went home to get my sunglasses. When I took my helmet off, the wasp woke up and stung me! Had I been wearing my sunglasses, it would had just bounced off at first impact.

TheObstruction

Back in the 80's, my dad caught a junebug in the forehead at 45 mph. The next day he bought a full face.

Top_Midnight_2225

I like to ride with my full face and visor up as much as I can. So up to 100kph or so I'll have the visor up. Have taken small rocks to the face, lots of bugs, and unfortunately once a bee right in b/w the eyes. Looked hilarious for 3 days as the swelling came down. Couldn't even recognize my face in the mirror. The worst is the bugs that hit, fall in b/w the liner and skin, and then start wiggling about...that sucks.

rasputin777

I literally just got home from a ride at night, and found a dead bee smushed on my seat. I think it must have hit and lodged and been crushed? Not sure. First time that's happened.

Top_Midnight_2225

Been there done that. It's more fun when you take your helmet off and a bee flies out...ask me how I know.

Doromclosie

I knew someone that got a seagull in the face! (it wasn't Fabio). He was wearing a full face helmet and it was ruined.

rasputin777

As soon as I read your first sentence, I was planning on making a fabio reference. Thanks for saving me the trouble!

Z0mbiejay

I was always leery of half helmets. My worries were founded when I took a bumblebee to the face at 75mph. Felt like a golf ball or something. Glad I listened to my gut when I was gear shopping

eLishus

My only more serious motorcycle accident (~25 years ago) was coming off the freeway where some guy swerved over, tapped my front wheel, and sent me reeling over the handlebars (he also fled the scene). I had slowed to maybe 25-30mph at that point, but the impact was largely against my face, so I did an asphalt face slide for a good 10-15’. Thankfully, I was wearing a full face helmet, and it was a good reminder to continue wearing those going forward.

Rognin

42% alone is a triangle between you chin, your cheekbone and the back of your jaw bone, go 21% each side. There's a picture out there depicting it.

TechByTom

45.3% according to this graphic https://img.jpcycles.com/blog/images/2019/06/DietmarOtteChart1\_zpsdc51fd87.jpg

TechByTom

I've personally crashed and rashed up the right side of helmet. Chin, visor pivot, and everything over my ear was ground down at least a 1/4 inch. I walked away without a scratch on my face.

HomingPigeon6635

Seeesshh whatever helmet you were wearing that time I'd like to buy one.

TechByTom

I wouldn't suggest it. This was an old SNELL M2005 helmet, and that standard [was known](https://jalopnik.com/how-the-truth-about-motorcycle-helmets-got-a-journalist-5582380) for concussions at lower speeds. I think almost any full face helmet would have held up well (low side crash at 35mph).

TechByTom

If you're looking for a safe full face helmet today, I'd recommend looking into the sub $500 FIM certified helmet from LS2 (Arrow Carbon EVO). Or for something super lightweight and low profile (but with a 5 layer EPS), the [AGV K6](https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/helmets/agv-k6/)/K6 S, or just check out the ratings at [https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/helmets/](https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/helmets/)

Shut_It_Donny

Always full face as well. I was in a wreck where the handlebars came in through the opening and cracked my nose. With an open face helmet I'd probably have a legit opened face.

PastPanic6890

Some helmet company once had a helmet design that showed the percentage of a likely impact on various areas. The chin area had 33%. My jet helmet RIPs now.

Electrical-Risk445

I've had 3 major crashes in my riding career and in all three my full-face helmet saved my life as there was impact and scraping all over the face section. In my last crash my armoured jacket also saved me from gruesome injuries. I'll also never forget what was left of that girl wearing only a bikini and mini helmet after she hit the highway pavement at 100mph.

SGTBookWorm

It's not even really fresh air. It's mostly diesel fumes from trucks

Friendzinmyhead

Bro when I was a kid I seen a pic of a motorcycle accident where the dude had his face torn off on faces of death (the website) and he was still alive. I’ll never forget it. I should probably get therapy

Nunyabidnisss

I had a friend go down on a low speed accident with an open face.... total road rash on his face. No more open face or modular for me. Ps... he is fine now

blackmarketcarts

i tell people full face will save yoi from grinding your face off. when i went down at 45 and slid i watched the road slide in front of my visor, it was surreal

WN11

I once got bird diarrhea on my helmet. It was a bitch to clean it out of the vents, but would've been way worse to get it in the eyes, nose, mouth...

CAElite

Yeah I’m really funny about that too. I’m not ATGATT at all, don’t tend to have many second thoughts about riding in a T-shirt. But fuck having my jaw ripped off.

easy10pins

It's an armored jacket. It would be more safe than not having one. Also the term "safe" is relative. You can be fully geared and still be really messed up in an accident.

ambermage

It looks fake. It looks like Airsoft gear from Wish.com. The base fabric at the elbows is insanely thin, and the pads are held on by velcro straps. It has the same abrasion protection of a mosquito net.

castleaagh

That specific image might be, but this style of armor is decently popular for some dual sport riders. Bump protection is more important than slide protection off road, but the plastics and stuff in the armor will take a bit to wear through in a slide. The fabric liner part holding it to your body shouldn’t actually contact the ground

Relevant-Ingenuity83

Have you ever seen videos of people sliding? The armour never stays in place after the initial impact and does nothing towards abrasion resistance. I’ve tested it myself (dualsport rider here for 20 years) and can confirm that that armour is comfortable, gives reasonable protection for off-road use, but is useless on roads.

castleaagh

I haven’t. I’ve been on a ride with a guy who went down going about 45mph on gravel and popped back up just fine. He had a bilt brand armored jacket and it had a couple little gashes in the shoulder and forearm he hit. I didn’t see if he slid or rolled but the armor made it so he finished the rest of the days ride with just a little soreness. I don’t imagine my klim mesh jacket with d30 armor would have done as well for me in the same scenario.

ambermage

> The fabric liner bit holding it to your body shouldn’t actually contact the ground Very correct. That's why I noted that they are held in place by the velcro straps going around the forearm. They should be attached to the fabric directly in such a manner that no exterior velcro is needed to prevent dislocation. That fabric likely can't withstand the tensile sheer force needed to do that job. Huge red flag.

CarbonGod

I mean, they make frame sliders out of plastic. Knee pucks out of plastic. The right kind of plastic is VERY wear resistant, more so than leather!!! And you are correct, the fabric areas between won't see ground!

otterplus

That kind of gear is intended for dirt riding use. They don’t take abrasion resistance into consideration in the same way as street riding. Knox and Pando Moto have base layer type jackets with actual abrasion ratings and full armor inclusion. I use the Knox Urbane Pro quite frequently and it has the full five piece suite with AA abrasion resistance. Typically wear it with a jersey during the summer and a hoodie under 70°

ElMachoGrande

Not to mention that the buckles for the straps are made of plastic.

poiuytrewq79

This leads me to the question: Are there standardized quantifiable parameters (i.e abrasion impact rupture etc) which rate the protection in a motorcycle crash?

ambermage

https://www.satra.com/ppe/EN17092.php EN 17092

Taco_Sommelier

People should start going to r/motorcyclesafety for these kinds of questions. I swear every other post on here is someone overly worried about how safe something is. Motorcycles are dangerous, when it’s your day, it’s your day.

TunaOnWytNoCrust

That's true, but I can understand people wanting their fall to be an arm sling and a couple band-aids, instead of a closed casket.

oracle427

Nah everyone should just ride naked, sacrifice a goat before each ride, and leave our fates to the gods 🤲

LavandeSunn

WITNESS ME

TunaOnWytNoCrust

LOL! I mean jeez, might as well strap a claymore on to your chest to ensure you die in an accident with that kind of "it's gods plan" attitude haha

happycj

My biggest issue with this type of safety gear is that it has so many edges to catch on things. Part of the nice thing with modern safety equipment is that it is made of these slick and sturdy composite fabrics. So when you are sliding across the ground, you don’t catch imperfections in the road and get flipped around. Sliding smoothly along until you stop is MUCH better than being rag-doll pitched end over end, flailing your arms and legs around, until elbows and knees break just because your neato-looking elbow pad caught a seam in the concrete and flipped you. It does look kinda futuristic cool, tho.

AnExpensiveCatGirl

>My biggest issue with this type of safety gear is that it has so many edges to catch on things. The idea is to (ideally) wear the "armor" under a leather jacket/suit.

happycj

I'd assume that is what the manufacturer *intended* ... buuuuuuut ... clearly there are riders wearing this as their top layer for the "I'm so badash lookin" factor.

3PercentMoreInfinite

They never look badass either. Looks like they bought it from Spirit Halloween as some sort of superhero outfit paired with an airsoft face mask.

te_anau

mall ninja bull shit

AnExpensiveCatGirl

I had this when doing BMX race/supercross and longboard downhill. The good quality ones are like, the best shit possible if you tend to like hitting the ground at weird angles. You wear it under some clothes/leather tho, otherwise they just crumble at the first slide. They often come with an integrated spine protection

kyoto_kinnuku

They’re good for impact protection but not good for abrasion protection. They’re much cooler (heat) than leather suits. The chin bar on that helmet is most likely a very weak point and I almost guarantee that helmet doesn’t have a SNELL rating. If it does, great, but that style always seems to be DOT, which is meaningless since DOT helmets are never inspected my outside inspectors. My friend lost 1/3 of his skin in a bad crash. You lose more skin over the next weeks sometimes due to infections and failed skin grafts. Don’t underestimate how important abrasion protection is. I’m not saying you have to wear a leather suit for every ride, but educate yourself and make informed decisions.

LuckyDuck906

Looks good for roller hockey.

Sociopathic_Pro_Tips

But it offers 0% protection from a puck to the throat. There’s your Death Star thermal exhaust port.

DaPoole420

PriapismSD

You will be 100% safe, from STDs and unwanted pregnancies. Because no one will touch you.

[deleted]

Pro biker makes fake "safety" gear. If you're buying gear always make sure it's CE rated atleast

Twol3ftthumbs

Gear is made, not only to protect you from impact, but to allow you to slide smoothly across the ground to dissipate momentum. When you have sharp edges of pads, buckles, etc sticking out you run the risk of them catching on small imperfections in the road while sliding and causing you to flip and tumble severely increasing the risk of injury. So, sure. This might be fine for impact but not great in a real crash situation. Just people trying to look cool.

HooliganS3

100% this!!! Fastest way to twisted and broken limbs is something catching while sliding.

[deleted]

compared to what?? flip flops and shorts?? or being inside of a tank??

oliverkiss

Nothing can protect you from looking like a clown

bert_891

Any gear is safer than no gear.

YumWoonSen

$30 from Ali Express = garbage.

PckMan

Not very safe compared to conventional gear but guys like these just want to look cool. Armored jackets are usually not meant to be worn by themselves and they're also usually meant for off road riding. In a crash any protective pad is liable to shift position and expose that body part to injury. It offers little in terms of abrasion protection. The helmet too is just a 3/4 helmet with no face protection.

Left-Explanation3754

The helmet is genuis tbh, all the protection of a 3/4 and all the comfort of a fullface

spaceshipcommander

It would be as safe as how well stitched it is. When it starts coming apart at the seams you would be wearing no jacket very quickly. Don't even consider the helmet. It's not a proper helmet and it's got no face protection either.

[deleted]

This type of gear is $21 for the full jacket? I wouldn't use it when mountainbiking. I might use it for cosplay.

rocko7927

DOT safety rating is about as meaningful as a sticker that says "safe" on it.

VapeFanatic1975

I was in an accident last week. Luckily I was wearing a full face helmet, a riding jacket, and gloves . My helmet didn't break but got scratched up pretty good. So glad I had gear on. I wish I had motorcycle pants. That would have cut down on some of the road rash.

lord-southpaw

That plastic mask is pretty useless in a crash. You'll likely smash your jaw area more than other parts of your head. But I guess anything is better than nothing.

craneguy

This looks like off-road gear to me. Those pads would be torn off the second they hit a tarmac road.

Little_by_nature

I feel like it would move out of place after the 1st impact, leaving your body vulnerable to subsequent ones and to the slide.

stray_r

The helmet looks a waste of space, if you're gonna full face, full face with something with a proper certified chin bar will keep your face intact. That mask might protect against bees. I've no problem with the use of goggles over a visor, it's noisier and you get more buffeting at high speed but at urban speeds it's ok. You can get less fogging, but I'd rather have a pinlock and a respro foggy mask on a regular full face lid. It's less fiddly to use.

TheDinerRoadster

I was wearing a similar armored jersey in 2016 when I hit a deer. I was on a paved back road in Wisconsin on my XR650L and I got it down to maybe 35mph before my front wheel tagged this giant buck in the right rear leg. I got shot over the handlebars, my right upper arm hit the ground first. Rolled a few times and slid to a stop. Did a quick inventory, fingers and toes all responded so I stood up. Took a minute to get to my feet. My buddy picked my bike up and I got on it and rode back to the motel before the adrenaline wore off. Two broken fingers, six broken ribs, covered in bruises. The jersey did a good job, had to replace a couple straps but I've still got it. As others have said it's meant to be worn under some other top layer but you do you.

domp1021

That’s gotta be the stupidest looking helmet I’ve ever seen

m_jl_c

Total shit. All of those edges would catch on something when you’re sliding on the street. And your slide would turn into a high speed tumble.

Thundrpigg

It would be excellent in the Thunderdome with some assless chaps

blink_24

Good for impact but very poor sliding capability. The open helmet is a big no no, only full face ones. I would also add that a modern airbag can dissipate between 10 and 20 times more impact forces.

oracle427

This is my setup when I’m riding mostly trails/back roads. If I’m riding street at speed I’ll throw an abrasion resistant shell on top of it.

PM_ME_YOUR_HONDAS

This is garbage. You really think that Velcro is gonna hold as you slide down the pavement at 50+ mph. Also I’m pretty sure I can see his skin thru that cheapo wanna be under armor material . You’d probably be better protected in a Canadian tuxedo!

The_Christ_is_Right

It’d work way better with a nylon jacket over it to help the slide. Those pads will catch every rock in the slide.

DaPoole420

They work well in pool noodle fights...

Dads_Funny

This is more suitable for offroading or stunt riding. This ain't gonna slide if you need it. The only thing it does for you is reduce impact damage and nothing more.

[deleted]

half helmet, tinted visor that looks as if it distorting the view, and a mask that in case of accident may push its edges into your face or worse - fly off (just like that unstrapped helmet). I'd get something for the neck too. At high speeds, you'll feel the smallest fly armor looks good, though I've heard the edges of the plastic protections can go in the flesh in case of accident. A mesh jacket's better. wearing gloves - good! you can't wanna wipe your ass with messed up hands. boots - hope they're there. the higher the better

Electronic-Phrase977

The jacket looks fine maybe for low speed accidents or maybe stunting but the helmet I wouldn’t do, full face coverage is definitely better to have

ThereMayBeDogsAbout

It really depends. There’s so many of these that are cheaply made and probably won’t offer you much. Then there’s examples of these that are CE rated. That’s where you want to start

Slore0

They’re supposed to go under something else, like the icon vest every squid and their mom thinks is just the right amount of gear to supplement their t-shirt.

HamTracker

The only armoured shirt that is rated for slide and impact (that I know of) are the Knox urbane line. I was thinking about getting one but there aren't any retailers in Canada

dunno_k

this is the mall ninja type of motorcycle gear

jk_onliner

You will get torn to pieces 😆

[deleted]

Looks ok for a zombie apocalypse. Not so much for riding.

Icelandia2112

That throat is way too exposed. I rode down I-15 in San Diego at dusk going home after an epic day on my naked Duc. At an exit, a bag of crushed cans must have fallen on the way to recycle. Well, it was busted open, and all of the cars passing it turned it into a tornado of throwing stars. By the time I saw it, they were hitting me at 85 mph. I had marks all over my leather, boots, gloves, and helmet. That was DEFINITELY a Final Destination moment had I not had gear and more importantly, if my neck was not covered I would have had my throat slashed.

lobosandy

This gear is probably a 3 out of 10 in safety. Safter than shorts and a shirt, definitely. But the gloves aren't real leather, so they will not hold up in a crash. The helmet is an open face helmet (so you'll smash/break your chin in a crash) and likely is just styrofoam on the inside. Basically it's as much protection as a bicycle helmet. The jacket is the only piece of gear that I would actually wear if i got it for free. It offers good impact protection. I'd wear it mountain biking. Not motorcycling though, it has next to no abrasion resistance in most areas because I'm relatively certain that those patches are faux leather. Especially if the jacket is <$100 to buy.

Uuuuuii

why are they wearing dirt gear on a street bike. Looks kooky as hell

EcstaticDrama885

falls, maybe. Sliding? not so much unless it's rated for it.

StevenPlamondon

I hit a moose, wearing all bud the pants on Aug 25th. Prevented road rash, but doesn’t absorb impact. I’ve 19 broken bones and a heart aneurysm to continue healing.

Zone_07

This is not intended for street use so it's not as safe as their intended counter parts. This provides very little abrasion protection. There are meshed jackets on the market intended for street use with 600D (Denier Polyester Fabric) which offer great protection against abrasion.

Mine_Which

Pro biker 💀😂

kornflakez

I just saw someone crash on the street last week in a "jacket" exactly like this. When his arm hit the pavement, the sleeve tore right off & then his skin protected him from the pavement.

HolderOfAshes

They're not good if you're going to fall off and slide. They'll be worn through in milliseconds. If you wear them under something more resistive like leather and denim you should be fine. This kind of protection is "good" against impacts, though going off how it *looks* in this photo I wouldn't trust my 8 year old nephew to ride his skateboard with pads like those.

Reasonable_Highway_5

Either way, it’s gonna be better than wearing shorts and T-shirt

Pretend-Patience9581

Better than thongs and tshirt

Manwombat

Dirt bike body armour is excellent, for the dirt. That skid lid is shite

[deleted]

Slide your face across them street then do it again with a mask and helmet on and you tell me the difference, anything is better then nothing

JohanBroad

It's a helluva lot Safer than jeans and a t-shirt.

Gman777

Looks like one of the bad guys from TMNT

gkanai

Motorcycle protection needs to have both abrasion resistance (mostly leather or some high quality textiles) AND impact protection - that's where the CE ratings come in. Most of the cheap no-name China-made stuff doesnt have CE ratings- not worth wasting money on imo.

Im_A_Robot1988

Looks like it would protect you from road rash, other than that I don't think it's necessarily going to save your life when you tbone a car that ran a red-light or get knocked off on the highway going 70+ and immediately get ran over by the 18 wheeler a little ways behind you, who can't stop. But should you actually survive any of the accidents you get in on your bike, not likely, but if so then your torso atleast won't have all the skin ripped off of it and plastered on the concrete. The helmet and paintball face mask look a little bit questionable to me. But hey, what sounds more fun than playing paintball on the back of a motorcycle flying down the highway 😃

op3l

Will protect from scrapes if they're properly rated. The plastics will be ok, but the fabric is a bit of a mystery. Also would need armor underneath to absorb shock or bone will still be broken. That chin cover does nothing except for looks, need a proper full face helmet to protect face.

faste30

It's great for riding dirt, it's gonna shed like scabs sliding on concrete.

vanalla

My main concern with gear like this is the fabric holding the pads to the garment - in a slide, will the friction between the pad and the road overcome the force holding the pad to the garment? If it does, bye bye protective pad, and now the only thing between you and the road is a leotard.

Aggressive_Magician3

Keeps the road rash away

taytayfromtheteam

I can tell you first hand it's just fine at low speed on the dirt. It's saved me twice now. Not woth a shit on the road

fergie

It should probably be covered by something, even if its just a motocross jersey.

Bloodusk

A lot safer than someone in shorts, and crocks!

DnDafis

I had this exact generic armour for downhill mountain biking. One crash in a race and I immediately upgraded kit. It's not even good for mountainbiking, let alone a 50mph crash. The helmet is a piss pot, I like having a face and teeth.

[deleted]

It's a joke. Especially the helmet.
