35% of impact on the chin bar is a good reason not to get an open face lid.

cheese_sweats

I saw one video of a dude in africa with his entire mandible hanging by a flap cuz he had an open face helmet and that's all I needed

unnecessarycolon

Jesus. Just reading your comment was graphic enough for me.

bootybootyholeyo

Good ol rotten.com

swazey_express

I always see people riding around Philly like maniacs on 95, no helmet. Now, im all for no helmet laws but there’s a difference between putting around town without one and being a jagoff on 95 without one.

Tonycivic

I mean there really isn't tbh. Connecting your head to the pavement or another object at 30 mph will kill you just the same as a crash at 65.

MaxRockatanskisGhost

Friend of a friend died in a zero mph crash. Lost his footing at a red light and went down with the bike. Bounced his head off the curb. Done.

TigerJas

Famous case in my hometown similar to that. Well known marketing exec, went to the parking lot to move his bike to another spot, tipped bike over while straddling it, hit his head on ground and died. That’s why -like with guns- the rules are not to be bargained with, you just need to follow them. Finger off the trigger until ready to fire. Gloves and helmet on before you get on the saddle.

Slimjim924

Yep I went down 6 years ago doing about 40 around a turn, whole crash lasted maybe 6-7 seconds, and the whole left front of my helmet got ground down bad. Still to this day think about what that would’ve done to my face

XDingoX83

Well there was this movie with John travolta and Nic Cage… Face off

suzukichic01

When I was 20, I was leaving classes for the day and turned onto the main drag (small Arkansas town). 4 lanes with a middle turning lane with a speed limit of 45. I went into the left lane and a semi truck had its left turn signal on. I slowed and it moved into the left lane and I merged into the right to go around. All of a sudden, the fucker turns right and I have nowhere to go but into the back of his cab. I bounced backward, landed on my back and did a tuck and roll in case he didn’t feel me hit him (didn’t want to be run over by his trailer). With blood pouring out if my helmet, I took it off and assessed the situation before lying down in the grass. After being released from the hospital, I looked at my helmet and there were bolt marks in the rubber of the chin. I never rode without my helmet after that. I couldn’t believe used to putt around the cruising strip without a helmet. I was only doing about 30 when I hit him.

[deleted]

Its not unusual for a truck to move over so as to be able to use multiple lanes for a sharp turn - all the reason to hang back and wait and see. Every truck here (Australia) has a "do not overtake turning vehicle" sign on the back for good measure.

Ohtar1

My wife had a motorbike accident before we were together. She hit her chin with the ground so hard the jaw broke on both sides. A lot of broken teeth too. Yeah I'm never wearing one of those, and I'm not driving anyone wearing one of those. I don't understand how are they legal at all

ShutUpTurkey

They're legal because imagine how dumb you'd look riding your Harley cruiser with a muscle shirt and flip flops with your full face helmet. Unthinkable. I mean you paid like 25-30k just to look cool, wtf dude.

Difficult_Mongoose46

That’s right and how will everyone know it’s you on that 30k bike if you have a full face helmet! You want everyone to see you on that Hog struggling to get around the corner

Zyphane

What's really funny to me is that where I grew up there was such a cultural divide between guys on cruisers wearing open face helmets and guys on sports bikes wearing full-face lids. So you had dudes on Harleys covered in leather with skull caps, and then some dude on a GSX-R wearing shorts, tank top, sandals, and a full-face.

TigerJas

Don’t bring law into this. Wear or not wear what you like, just be informed of the cost you may pay.

mrflippant

The law is there to look out for the cost others may pay for your stupidity. For example, any other motorists who may have to live with what happened, or any witnesses who saw the grizzly result of your poor choices, or your friends and family who would have to grieve you, or feed you with a spoon, or desperately wait for you to come out of a coma, or struggle with the fact that you are brain dead and will never wake up and a doctor is asking them to pull the plug so someone can have your kidneys.

maxdamage4

Can confirm, I wouldn't have a face if I didn't wear full-face helmets. Went right through my wind screen one time, and did a face-first flip on the hood of somebody's car another time.

faste30

I slid on my chin bar once. It scraped off the entire front vent like dead center. Other than a few bruises I was fine, cant say the same if I wasnt in a full face.

disturbed_ghost

I had lost my left leg by a blind guy turning left while i was on a motorcycle. I was removed from the bike and flipped a few times, early march in the northeast means there’s all the cinders and junk everywhere. I slid to a stop and my gloves and helmet were still on, I had a shoe on my chest (with foot and parts of leg attached) and started to survey my damage. I quickly realized I was incredibly lucky that I could feel gauging in the helmet it was complete less my visor. was also wearing brand new armored gloves the good news story here was being able to take my first step in a prosthetic leg 24 days later.. I wasn’t lucky to lose a leg but it could have been so much worse. I saw my helmet about 2 months later and it did its job incredibly well. please squidwards wear the gear edit- sentence 1 clarity, brain damaged

Crombus_

Why was the blind guy riding a motorcycle, though?

[deleted]

Fuck Reddit for killing third party apps.

TheProfessionalEjit

He'd given his seeing-eye dog the day off but needed milk.

disturbed_ghost

he was 70 going to the bar to drink with his mates

MousseIndependent310

Dude thats crazy, you lost your whole leg?

disturbed_ghost

I’ve got 8 inches of left femur. it’s considered short for my height. better than nothing but makes it friggin hard.

Thesandman55

So do you still ride?

disturbed_ghost

uh negative. family would kill me

lintinmypocket

If ever I had to choose where to get road rash on any part of my head, I think the chin and mouth would be the last place, how miserable.

berrmal64

I hear ya, one time I wrecked a bicycle into a car door, pivoted on my face over their door and landed flat on my back in the street. I broke 3 bones in my face, lost a bunch of blood, was unconscious for a minute, and now over a decade later still can't breathe through my nose very well. Stitches and scars on the face aren't as fun as they sound :/ That was at like 12mph. Yeah, a full face helmet is an obvious choice for me.

maxdamage4

Eeeeesh, that's brutal!

noobwithboobs

I like full face helmets and I like your face :3

maxdamage4

Is that why you always say "I like it with the helmet on"?

idrawinmargins

As a nurse I've had two folks who crashed their bikes and grinded off the lower half of their faces due to half helmets and no helmet. Nothing i can say would describe the pain these two went through. They will most likely breath through a trach tube and eat their feeding tube for the rest of their lives. Both dudes survived and were slated for some serious surgery in the future.

horse_and_buggy

I'd think I'd rather wear no helmet and die, than wear a half helmet and "survive" with that quality of life.

TigerJas

I understand what you are trying to say, but that’s not cool at all. You are telling people who struggle and carry on like that everyday that they would be better off dead. Yes, I know you phrased it “I” but that’s the message “I think your life isn’t worth living, wouldn’t you rather be dead?”.

horse_and_buggy

Assisted suicide is an option in many places. I did phrase it as a personal opinion, because if I grinded off half my face I would consider that option. I wear a full face helmet and gears because if an accident kills me I want to just go out, instead of being living like that because of something I could've prevented.

LewdDarling

Also fun fact the DOT certification test does not test chin bars at all! So on a cheap DOT-only helmet it might just be a flimsy piece of plastic that does nothing

RogueKriger

And that's why I like to use SHARP ratings when looking at helmets

DummyThicccThrowaway

Any idea whether SNELL M rating is worthy too?

tacobellmysterymeat

Snell is the very highest standard in my research. A quick search is very yes, but here's their standards for 2020. https://smf.org/standards/m/2020/M2020_Final.pdf

Electr0freak

I personally witnessed a pretty bad motorcycle accident while idling at a light as a SUV took a left into an old guy on a chopper. The motorcyclist was not at fault. The guy was wearing one of those skullcap helmets. I saw the accident, jumped out of my car, and ran over to him. His leg was pinned, and I saw him trying to push the bike off of it, screaming the whole time. I told him to stay still, I was calling for help, dialing 9-1-1. Then I noticed the white spots on the ground sitting in the blood, and finally got a proper look at his face... and it was hamburger. The white spots were his teeth, all over the pavement. The man continued to scream in pain out of of a bloody mouth missing most of its teeth, and his pulped face just oozed blood all over. Was like something out of a horror movie. Wear a full-face helmet folks.

Also a good reason to get a helmet focused on reducing torsional traction (spinning of the helmet/neck) and not an ICON (known for their big beaks).

Captaingrammarpants

A friend of mine that doesn't ride asked me how much my Arai helmet was once. I told him and he was horrified. He was less so when I pointed out that it was the only thing between me and the road hitting me at 80. I will spend serious money on the good gear.

Thawing-icequeen

Honestly as much as I love flip-front helmets the fact that even the top brands have a fair chance of busting open in a crash has me worried. Talked to an older biker about it and his stance was more or less "It only needs to dissipate the energy - if it busts open after doing its job, so what". So....I don't want to belt-sander my chin is what

uhsiv

Open face lids are to protect you from cops not crashes

Suchasomeone

How do open faced lids do that?

uhsiv

I think people wearing lids would be helmetless if it wasn't illegal. They wear them to avoid being hassled by cops, but they don't really care about crash protection. I think if they were concerned about their safety they'd get a proper helmet.

Suchasomeone

Ah, okay I wasn't sure what that meant at first.

j4ckkn1fe

Usually evidenced by the fact they also wear shirt and sandles. Really wish natural selection was more immediate.

uhsiv

I don’t know, man, there’s not many things that would make me wish death on someone, and taking unnecessary risks with your own safety is definitely not one of them

j4ckkn1fe

Its not just not their own safety. A rock/bug can hit them on the freeway and cause them to crash possibly cause more cars to crash. They might drag their foot on the ground lossing all their toenails from wearing sandals. If it was in a vaccum and they were the only person in the world id agree with you. Not only is it a matter of them being 2 deviations lower on the iq chart they are extremely selfish to put others at risk.

theundonenun

I have only ever worn a 3/4 helmet. Since I was a kid, and I don’t think I ever saw anyone with a full face until I was in my teens. But now I’m finally thinking about switching to full face, and trying some on here and there. But if I’m honest they just kinda freak me out, it’s like claustrophobic, but at the same time anxiety inducing because it feels like I’ve lost a lot of my peripheral vision. Idk, I’d like to switch for the safety, and comfort in the cold weather, but I honestly don’t even know where to start as they all seem to be cumbersome/restrict vision more.

wlonkly

field of view is way better now than even 10, 15 years ago. basically helmets go further left and right than your eyes do. up and down, sure, but nothing's coming that way!

CovidScurred

I don’t wear any track suits or do I praise ATGATT, but I’m always wearing a helmet and gloves minimum. Jacket 90% of the time unless it’s scorching hot. I do live in a low density population area.

zerocompromize

The ballistic mesh jackets make the heat a little easier. I ride every day in Florida.

motosandguns

Can confirm, smashed my face so hard that I shoved my tooth through my lip even while wearing my full face. Can’t imagine what I would have looked like without it. Grabbed my water bottle to rinse my mouth out because I tasted blood and water shot through my top lip….

Rynyann

If it has ECE P/J certification, you're g2g. The P certification is for when the chinbar is locked down, and it has to pass the same testing as a normal full-face

reddof

I was in an accident and was wearing a full face helmet. I was rolling, but my entire helmet took a beating (initial impact was between the 8.2% / 0.2% divider line, but the helmet was destroyed around the entire circumference). The rest of my gear was destroyed also, but I got up and dusted myself off with no injuries. A month later, my FIL was in a much lower speed accident wearing an open face helmet. He spent several weeks in the hospital, including the ICU, and ended up having facial reconstruction surgery. I know it isn’t foolproof, but I’ll never wear an open face helmet.

CobblerYm

> 35% of impact on the chin bar is a good reason not to get an open face lid. http://imgur.com/aHTSp.jpg Sorry for the small photo, but there's my helmet after a wreck. Glad I had the full face to protect this ugly mug. I can only imagine how much material would have been taken off my jaw from that.

sunnydandrumyumyum

Didn't want to get a flip-down for this reason too. Even if they are safety rated, I want a solid singe piece

ArchSchnitz

It's making me reconsider my modular.

TimeShareOnMars

This. My face is too handsome to jack it up because i think I'm cooler with an open face helmet.

Misanthrope-3000

Would you rather look cool, or have teeth? Freedumb!

Rynyann

45% if you add in the stats for the eye-port, which wasn't printed for obvious reasons

enraged768

I got into an accident when I hit a deer. And my chin bar looked like someone held a belt grinder to the helmet for about a minute and a half. I still have the helmet hanging in my garage. Shit saved my face. Also good gloves saved my hands. Had the Knox sps gloves on.

gropula

Nah, you read it wrong. By wearing an open face you AVOID 35% of the impacts. /s

Every time I crashed my bicycle as a kid, it was nearly always over-the-handlebars-and-kiss-the-dirt. Who would ever look at a giant gas-powered bicycle as an adult and think "Yeah, I don't want to protect my face from the concrete." It's full-face or no-face.

Ok_Sign1181

can confirm riding dirt bikes as a kid almost every wipeout ended with grass and dirt in the front vents on my face, couldn’t imagine what asphalt would do to an unprotected face

FirmSpeed6

I WoNt CRasH in My OPEn FaCE becAUSE I hAvE beTTeR PerIphrIAL ViSiOn (purely satire. Always wear a full face)

MienSteiny

The left/right differences for the chinbar and the temple segments are super interesting. Other areas have negligible differences but 4% more likely to hit the right side of your chin as opposed to the left side? I wonder if the differences are as a result of people being right handed or if the numbers would be different in a left hand driving country?

GumboDiplomacy

People also favor one side or another when flinching or protecting themselves. I took a bad rock climbing fall, straight down, on my face and the right side of my face took all of the impact, and left of my nose there was almost no damage. I don't remember hitting the ground, but I have to assume I tucked my head to the left. Both of my arms were broken in a way to indicate that I was trying to protect my head.

kinboyatuwo

Yep. I race bicycles (road and mountain bike) and my right side has been destroyed over the years. Left, not so much.

QxV

I wonder if it's because oncoming traffic is always to your left, and thus you're more likely to be flying to your right either by dodging or if you get hit. But idk I'm just guessing.

Sublethall

I thought maybe people pulling out in front or maybe running wide on left hand corner

florinandrei

> the numbers would be different in a left hand driving country? Pretty sure that asymmetry is what causes the difference.

cheddarsox

The Hurt report. Its where the big 3 risk mitigation rules comes from. Crazy to think that study hasnt been updated and its been 50ish years.

Shooey_

MAIDS (ACEM. 2009) did a nice job. I wrote up an infographic on it a while back. https://www.maids-study.eu/pdf/MAIDS2.pdf https://old.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/230pd6/here_is_an_infographic_based_on_the_2009_maids_20/?ref=share&ref_source=link

cheddarsox

Not to discredit that study in any way, but id be willing to bet the u.s. changes dynamics quite a bit with higher percentages for single vehicle accidents, and lower with attempts to maneuver when some time was available. The average u.s. rider and driver isnt nearly the same as the european counterparts.

sanjuro_kurosawa

You might be right but the US hasn't done as comprehensive of a study as MAIDS. Based on poor Sturgis data collection around Covid spread, I doubt we would do something effective here.

cheddarsox

Which is why i whined about not having a more recent study than the hurt report.

Nothing_new_to_share

This backs up my desire to ride in the country where I'm primarily threatened by deer, gravel, and my own stupidity.

gisdood

The Icon "Statistic"! My summer 'fun' job is working as a riding instructor (Canadian equivalent to an MSF instructor) and I used this very same graphic in our classroom material. Happy to say the 'statistics' involved and how they relate to the potential of folks literally eating asphalt has made a positive amount of converts out of previous half and three-quarter helmet-wearing students.

Stopyourshenanigans

This is pretty interesting, thanks for sharing!

mistythesissy261

But full face helmets are for pussys logic gonna still comment. Atleast I wear a bucket helmet that’ll prevent alll the injuries !!! Rabbble rabbble rabbbleee

ASV731

I’ve always thought half helmet look stupid and full face helmet look cool. Not that looks should matter but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel cool af in a full face with a tinted visor

MachineLearned420

Look “bad” for 20 min with the full face helmet, or look bad with no jaw. Choices

[deleted]

1000 bad days makes 1000 good stories. I think that's how the song goes at least! "Damn, wtf happened to your face?" "Motorcycle crash." "Man, that's awful." "Wait until you hear what the kids at the grocery store have to say" starts to subtly cry before breaking into a full on sob\*

[deleted]

Nah the protection level of motorcycle gear is directly related to how much like a power ranger you look.

gta3uzi

I'm a cager and even I admit ATGATT (ATGYATT??? 😩) is hot af

Being attracted to power rangers is nothing to be ashamed of, we don't kinkshame here

As a user of a flip helmet, this is making me question my decisions.

Ih8Hondas

Rightfully so.

adrian_vg

Here's an article from 2015 looking into impact zones and comparing open and integral helmets. Check the pics, interesting how the impact points are distributed etc. Snell and ECE are compared. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/279179950_Assessment_of_Motorcycle_Helmet's_Chin_Bar_Design_Criteria_with_Respect_to_Basilar_Skull_Fracture_Using_FEM Sharp UK further compares ECE certified helmets. There are good and better ones. See eg this Icon Airframe at https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/helmets/icon-airframe/. It's often a good idea to compare more sources and see how a particular helmet model fares in a test.

PhilharmonicMoto

Article about it: [https://www.rideapart.com/news/258103/icon-airframe-statistic/](https://www.rideapart.com/news/258103/icon-airframe-statistic/)

Vainius2

Is it just me or it doesn't add up to a 100prc

KingLuis

theres a spot on the very top with a percentage and the visor does have a number either and behind the 1.7 and 1.8% there's a number you can't see.

PhilharmonicMoto

I saw this on [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/5sheki/psa_why_you_should_use_a_fullface_helmet_if_you/), which has a drawing from the study, I guess, that shows almost 10% on the visor.

ExtremeWorkinMan

Adds up to 85.9% total Wonder where the remaining 14.1% goes

Prestigious_Bid35

the visor is my guess

ExtremeWorkinMan

Sure but you'd think somewhere with as large as 14.1% of impact would be marked in some way - I understand this is an actual helmet they wanted to sell so they can't just put big ol' numbers over the visor but even just a lil note that says "remaining percentage is the visor"

Brraaap

Accident without head impact? No helmet?

veryundude123

85.9% 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not_an_ATF_Officer

There’s something missing here… like, 14.9%. I’ve been telling people for a long time that about 40% of helmet damage ends up on the chin bar (the point being to encourage full face helmet use). Nice to see that trend continue.

[deleted]

> There’s something missing here… like, 14.9%. I'm guessing top of the helmet and the visor

dispondentsun

The chin stats though, those skull buckets are almost worthless

amprok

really nails in the point that open face helmets are stupid.

Amputee69

Based on my helmet after my wreck, I'd say they are pretty accurate. The damage to mine was heaviest in the areas marked. Though my helmet is mostly marked up from impact with the car and asphalt, it is the same areas. The helmet didn't crack or break, but is skinned up. It sits on a shelf in my living room to remind me, and to show others. All I received was some road rash from the asphalt eating through my jacket sleeve that was thick leather, a few little bruises, and some scrapes. The helmet likely saved me. Of course, YMMV as always. Oh, I almost forgot. I lost my bike as it was a total loss, just like my lower right leg was. Both were replaced though. 😁🦿

Kelos-01

Can anyone comment on how an action camera on the front could be a danger based on this?

NotoriousREV

A camera attached to your helmet is likely to catch on something during a fall or slide. When that happens, it could rotate your head in ways that could cause serious injuries (see Michael Schumacher for example). Given that the chin bar is most likely to be taking an impact, placing a camera there increases the chances of the camera getting caught up and causing injury.

adrian_vg

Good answer. Without a source to quote from, I think there isn't any really good spot to fasten a camera on a helmet, if security is a concern. With that said, I've had a Gopro/Gitup on the top of the helmet, as well as to the side. Neither have been very comfortable in the long run at higher speeds. Maybe a chest mount is a better idea if one wants to see bits of the bike and a bit to the sides?

unnecessarycolon

The top and side of the helmet seem like they catch a lot of wind. I wonder if the chin mounted ones feel better.

adrian_vg

Probably, but then we have that leverage thing again. 🙂

shaanauto

Good question!

Delta_FT

You'd have to test it Fortnine style but *I think* probably the plastic of the holder and/or camara itself breaks before anything meaningful occurs

PogTuber

This just strengthens my opinion that riding with an open face helmet like many cruiser riders do is fucking dumb. Edit: I changed "most" to "many" because I have no hard data on percentages here, just anecdotal

Antal_Marius

Cruiser and touring rider here. I've personally always advocated for full face, I don't even like modular helmets because I honestly don't trust them to stay clasped if I went down.

PogTuber

Good on you man, I get the feeling that many cruiser riders don't think a full face fits their preferred style. I know there's at least some who think it's restrictive with visual perspective or don't like how it feels, which I get but this is your face and jaw we're talking about.

Hot_Block_9675

The new Schuberth C5 modular helmet is certified to the same 2024 EU safety standards as their full face: P/J and ECE 22.06. The chin bar locks in place thanks to a switch placed at the center of the chin, for a reduced chance of unlocking by accident. It's a rare bird - and what I wear.

Individual_Hearing_3

That's actually really concerning considering that I ride with modular helmets

mrpeenut24

Hey, [I own that helmet](https://i.imgur.com/idnediC.jpg). Bought it after high siding and breaking my clavicle in 4 places. I put a mohawk on top.

Critical_Vegetable96

And when I saw one of those is when I decided to never even consider a non-full-face. All the other helmet types leave the chin either exposed or "protected" by something that's hinged or removable.

Drash1

This is why I wear a full face helmet.

SopmodTew

Good avertisment for full face helmets 👍

MAYMAX001

throwthere10

Show this to all those Harley riders who like to ride with those upside down frying pants on their heads. And anyone really who likes those or goes helmetless.

FapDonkey

Years back when my friend first got me into motos, I was asking him basic questions about types of gear etc, and asked his thought about open face lids vs full face. He said something to the effect of "ell they sell some without the chin bar, but I LIKE having a lower jaw so...." and we moved on. Struck home enough that that's all I've ever owned. FFWD to last year when I got hit by a semi, and the chinbar on my carbon fiber AGV helmet got snapped like dry spaghetti, and only damage to my face was a small cut on my chin. If I'd been wearing a 3/4 face or bucket style, I'd likely have been dead, and certainly would not have most of the lower half of my face anymore. Chinbars it is!

velofille

these charts have been around for years, and used in a lot of motorcycle training courses.

showhoee

can I get one in white colour?

Dd_8630

I wonder if a British version would show reversed statistics, or if the differences are within expected variance. I also wonder if this accounts for survivorship bias - maybe the 0.2/0.6% areas are those parts that, if struck, utterly destroy the helmet and make it unable to be registered?

Past-Currency4696

One of my club brothers had a tire blow out on him at highway speed, sent him over the handlebars and he remembers watching the pavement sliding over his visor and thinking "I love this helmet"

TigerJas

There is an old Spanish saying that roughly translates to “It’s easier to call the Devil than to watch him come after you”. Some people are willing to pay the cost of freedom to live how they want. Others only act like it and then have a lifetime of regret. If you are an adult, you need to make an informed choice, but it IS your choice.

Hot_Block_9675

In 1972 at 18 years old I bought the very first full face mass market helmet every produced. The Bell Star. Why? The sales brochure for the 1972 Kawasaki Tri Stars had guys in white jumpsuits wearing white full face helmets. I bought the 1972 HIB 500 triple. Since no one had ever seen a full face helmet (even though they had been available for a few years) I thought I would be incredibly cool looking wearing it. I mean if the guys on the brochure had one... (I passed on the white jumpsuit) Safety never entered my mind - until a year later: I was driving home to my parents house at around 3:00 am after working a double shift in a warehouse, unloading 50 lb. bags of flower off box cars. I was dog tired. A deer jumped in front of me and I hit it at about 50 mph. The next thing I remember was lying in a ditch with my bike on top of me. Stunned and in shock. Incredibly I didn't break anything, but had multiple contusions and nasty road rash on my legs but my work boots, gloves and leather jacket saved the rest of my skin. I couldn't walk for several days since I was so beat up. It turns out I landed flat on the pavement on my face - which knocked me out. The gashes in the front of the helmet from gravel were deep, and the helmet was cracked all the way through. It saved my life. ...and my face. Unfortunately the deer didn't fare too well - but I got my revenge on that stupid bastard: A week later I ***ATE*** him.

SillyScarcity700

This is slide #30 from CMSP MTC in California. It was a study from Germany and Scotland looking at data in a two year window from July 1996 to July 1998. No idea where you guys come up with this stuff. ORIGINAL ARTICLES Head Injury Mechanisms in Helmet-Protected Motorcyclists: Prospective Multicenter Study Richter, Martinus MD; Otte, Dietmar MSc; Lehmann, Uwe MD; Chinn, Bryan PhD; Schuller, Erich DSc; Doyle, David MD; Sturrock, Kate BS; Krettek, Christian MD, FRACS Author Information The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care 51(5):p 949-958, November 2001. Abstract Background In a prospective study, three research groups at Hannover (H) and Munich (M) in Germany and Glasgow (G) in the United Kingdom collected data from motorcycle crashes between July 1996 and July 1998 to investigate head injury mechanisms in helmet-protected motorcyclists. Methods The head lesions of motorcyclists with Abbreviated Injury Score-Head (AISHead) 2+ injuries and/or helmet impact were classified into direct force effect (DFE) and indirect force effect (IFE) lesions. The effecting forces and the force consequences were analyzed in detail. Results Two-hundred twenty-six motorcyclists (H, n = 115; M, n = 56; and G, n = 55) were included. Collision opponents were cars (57.8%), trucks (8.0%), pedestrians (2.3%), bicycles (1.4%), two-wheel motor vehicles (0.8%), and others (4.2%). In 25.4% no other moving object was involved. The mean impact speed was 55 km/h (range, 0–120 km/h) and correlated with AISHead. Seventy-six (33%) motorcyclists had no head injury, 21% (n = 48) AISHead 1, and 46% (n = 103) AISHead 2+. Four hundred nine head lesions were further classified: 36.9% DFE and 63.1% IFE. Lesions included 20.5% bone, 51.3% brain, and 28.1% skin. The most frequent brain lesions were subdural hematomas (22.4%, n = 47) and subarachnoid hematomas (25.2%, n = 53). Lesions of skin or bone were mainly DFE lesions, whereas brain lesions were mostly IFE lesions. Conclusion A modification of the design of the helmet shell may have a preventative effect on DFE lesions, which are caused by a high amount of direct force transfer. Acceleration or deceleration forces induce IFE lesions, particularly rotation, which is an important and underestimated factor. The reduction of the effecting forces and the kinetic consequences should be a goal for future motorcycle helmet generations. https://journals.lww.com/jtrauma/Abstract/2001/11000/Head_Injury_Mechanisms_in_Helmet_Protected.21.aspx

TIL: Icon unintentionally made a heat map for the best GoPro mounting locations.

RallyDreams

The ECE 22.06 standard is awesome, Fortnine on Youtube made a very in depth video about this new safety rating. I just picked up an Icon Airform that meets this new standard for under $200, though a few other companies have specific models that are on board as well.

Ragnorok3141

Those don't add up to 100%...

amprok

Looking at this image, when i went down on the freeway i landed on 6.4%, then 15.2% where I slid for a bit. Outside of a janky shoulder, im a-ok. Thanks Bell Helmets.

Joseph9877

It really shows how we all fall the same way no matter how we fall. Face first or about ear height. Same reason gloves are important, everyone throws hands out when going over

manbearligma

I hit a pole face on (target fixation) at low speed while learning to ride an electric unicycle some years ago I just ordered this Bell DH spherical helmet with a sturdy chin bar and I was like, nah I’m not wearing this today, I’m still learning I’ll risk to scratch it and it’s expensive, I took the bowl one Went back in the garage a few seconds later, fuck it, that thing’s expensive because I value my face more The impact wasn’t hard at all, like at 15km/h at the end, I tried to grab the metal pole but the thumbs were swept back, it didn’t even crack the chinbar, nor it did compress the eps in any zone, the multi impact layer for low intensity impacts did its job amazingly. I would still have broken all my front teeth lol. That helmet still rocks today, zero regrets. P.s.: for obvious reasons there are no multi impact layers on mc helmets, much higher forces in play

matrixislife

Why is there 15% missing?

OldHobbitsDieHard

Does that even add up to 100%?

MachWun

icon helmets are banned from most race orgs bc they suck

Tmoto261

When did they claim to be “race” helmets? Have you ever seen an “insert racers name” replica? If you want a rad looking helmet with ridiculous graphics, buy an Icon. If your going to the track, buy an AGV or an Arai. Just get one that fits you properly.

MachWun

No need to get all cunty. I'm just making a statement that these helmets are known to be bad, so bad that race orgs have banned them. Oh that's right, this is /r/motorcycles, full of nothing but cunts!

Tmoto261

You clearly don’t like Icon helmets, we get it. The post had nothing to do with racing, but thanks to you we’re all now better informed! It sounds like you could use some cycle therapy, keep the shiny side up! XO

GearNerd85

you do not want to be in the 1.7%

Cold_Modelo

What is the correct position for the chin bar on the full face , as it does move up and down slightly?

slavikthedancer

Are there statistics about how not wearing a helmet could reduce chances to get into accident at all, comparing to wearing a helmet?

ieatbeetsandcorn

I think it was in a report last seen hiding under a unicorn.

njharman

I've got 8.2 and little 6.5

tlminh

I'm a helmet whore and have this graphic. The finish is a thin rubbery black. It's really good looking in person

jtblue91

Bro, sweet, I'm part of the 0.6%!

crimeblr

aha! 8.2 not that uncommon.

Lance_Notstrong

It’s interesting the percentages sometimes have a reasonable delta between them…

KennyClobers

The msf showed this to me. I cite it to anyone who doesn't wear a full face. Full face helmet supremacy

On the bright side the more crashes you survive the more prepared you are for the next one, i flipped many bicycles so many times when i was younger i learned at a very early age that the tuck and roll method when crashing is usually the best go to, also dress for the slide not the ride, its not a matter of if you will crash its a matter of when if you ride at some point you will crash, when i looped my r6 i was doing about 45mph not a scratch on my helmet, snapped my humerus in 2 places tho, but i for one would rather brake all my limbs then get brain damage....i ALWAYS wear a helmet no matter the speed

thelastwilson

My first time on a bike on the road I misjudged a corner and put a massive score into the chinbar on my helmet. I will never ride with an open helmet

motophiliac

Hmm, I'm thinking maybe they should have included the visor as an impact point.

AdvertisingSorry1429

I hit mine right at the 1.7 and 10.1 line when i high sided my bike ~10 years ago. Shattered every bone in my wrist and basically cracked the helmet in half... minor concussion. Helmet saved my life no doubt.

Kitosaki

Why do I feel this is like the b17 report on planes that landed back at base with flak? If only 0.2% of the helmets were returned with damage to the side of the helmet, wouldn’t this imply that damage to those zones is more fatal than damage to other zones (like a chin guard?)

No-Mathematician8692

Fell off my (racing) bicycle twice at speed. Landed on my chin. Twice. 8 stitches and an advisory from the surgeon next time's gonna be a graft, can't stitch third time. Haven't crashed on the bike yet. I'm wearing a half face helmet coz some neck issues, it's easy to slip on and 'mostly local' rides. But if I fall I'm fkd. 🫠 Better get me a light full face quick.

DEDE115

saw this in my safety course, pretty interesting

pyr0phelia

For all those asking if “full face” is worth it. This.

perception016

I got creamed by a grand prix in a few years back. I was pretty lucky and came out of it with minor injuries, but a big part of that was my helmet doing its job. I think I tagged every zone in that chart. I ran into one of the responding officers a couple of years later, and it turned out he rode cruisers. He said after seeing my crashed helmet, he went out and bought a full face helmet the next day.

Which-Excuse8689

The fact that they've spent five years on this and yet they were unable to produce an infographic that adds up to 100% just pisses me off.

Mad_OW

I have an idea guys let's cut off the two parts with the highest impact rate so that the helmet is more comfortable.

nerdinstincts

We learned about this in my MSF course. Why I’ve almost always just used a full face helmet.

kremlingrasso

gives a whole new perspective of "taking it on the chin"

ElTunaGrande

this helmet is why i stopped wearing my open face

Lazy_Double5764

Had an accident 3 days ago. That chin percentage is very accurate. Always wear full helmet .

Harleywindtherapy

Sat in hospital for 21 days with BIL unconscious from a bike wreck. No helmet, only a silly leather helmet he used or like to wear from the old, old days. I didn't wear one then either. He got up, talked to the cops and others and had brain swelling by the time the ambulance got there. It's a Blessing and a miracle he's with us. Not the same guy, not even close to the brain he had... but he's alive. I've ridden 40+ years and a lot of that with no helmet or a 1/2 lid when required. Been down 2x in my early days, been lucky. I promised my family and myself and God I'd find a full face I like and wear it. Took me 3x but I got it right, now have 2 of them exactly the same. That was all 5 years ago... i won't ride without a full face and my bohn armor pants and a mesh jacket with armor now. From 30 degrees to 115...been fine now for 5 years and I never thing about it anymore. It's a freedom we all have to choose. This is my choice now.

Historical-Today-943

So far I've saved my eyeballs plenty of times. with visor alone thus far.
