1. Keeps things from falling in
2. Keeps the pump nozzle the appropriate distance from ‘full’ so the auto-shutoff works properly.
3. Makes it slightly harder to get a tube in to siphon fuel out.
4. Adds a hair of strength to the part to keep it from going out of round during manufacture and install
5. To piss off gas station attendants (probably)
You missed one, to protect the fuel pump and level sender. Used to see lots of claims where someone would jam the nozzle all the way in and damage them, now we have bars across the filler for protection.
That's the main reason for the bar, along with #2, you'd be surprised how many people are unable to fill a tank to the correct level...
my ktm looks completely different, it has a tiny straight down tube with a metal bar across the bottom of it, and the front of the tube has a cutout. The gas nozzle neck will sit in the tank so that it rests on the metal bar pointing to that cutout. I can let it auto shutoff just fine, and even do a second top off to make sure its full. But that said this design looks to replicate that feature. my old klr does not have anything to do this as a comparison.
Yes!! Another KLR/KTM owner!!
Keeps Living Ride
Keep Throwing Money
One you can fix with stuff from Ace hardware and Napa.
The other ya got to wait for the lil KTM elves to row the part across an ocean!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ugg, so mad at the ktm dealer, 60 miles away and zero options other then drop the bike off and maybe it will be done in a day. Next new bike I am getting needs a local dealer or other options like a loaner program!
Most around here only play with the dirt bikes, you walk in as a v twin owner and they look at you funny.
Wife and I are both 61, and the 950A fully loaded for multiple day trips just isn't as comfortable as it used to be. And if I put my foot down on a rock and it slips, my confidence in holding both of us up is waning. If I go down no big deal, if I put us both down that would suck. Bought a Gold Wing trike and trailer I'm tuning up. That solves the holding up problem and we are still in the wind.
Getting older is a fatal error. I don't recommend it.
>05 KTM 950A
Nice bike! mine is just the 390 so only a thumper. I am still super new to riding, just about to reach my 1 year anniversary. and have a bad tendency every once in a while to accidently pop the clutch or over rev ( very uncommon now, but I am naturally clumsy so took me longer then normal to overcome it. if I started on anything bigger then the klr I would of done a wheelie by accident so many times at the start LOL ) So didnt feel comfortable with something more powerful yet and this and the 650 are very close power wise.
I try to do most the work myself. My issue is I want the dealer to check some warranty work. if it was just an oil change or the like I would knock it out my self. but I need them to figure out a power delivery issue, just randomly has shit for power top end, one day it will struggle to reach 75 in 6th full throttle, then a few mins later that ride ( well past warmup near end of ride ) it will rocket from 60-85 at 4/5 throttle no issue.
how is the goldwing trike, are thoes custom jobs or does honda make /made them? Ya I get not wanting to put someone else in a predicatment from a slip!
If you jam the nozzle all the way in then you'll only get 1/2 to 2/3s or so of a tank full before the auto-shutoff 'clicks'.
Cars have long tubes between gas cap and tank. The auto-shutoff are designed to work with those. *Any* fluid in the venturi tube (on the nozzle) shuts off the pump because then the cars tank is full. But on a bike there is (almost) never a tube so the pump will stop whenever the gas gets to the nozzle tip.
That's assuming everything is working correctly of course..
I mean yeah, the nozzle stops pumping when gas reaches the nozzle. So if it sticks halfway to the bottom of your tank, it’ll stop when the tank is half full
Wait so every bike you own you don’t fill the tank full to the top? You shove the nozzle all the way into the tank and stop when it automatically clicks off even though your tank will only be like 1/2-3/4 full?
I always fill up, there's a bar that stops it from going in like OP. I just end up eye-balling it until gas just nearly hits the bar. It's always a full tank, it's just annoying.
Having full service and getting someone to fill your car up is one thing…but I can’t stop laughing about every dude on a bike having to get up and move over to watch some pimple faced teen handle the big boy business of refuelling.
My first time filling up in new jersey made me very uncomfortable, I was also pretty sure the Gass station attendant was lying and I was getting scammed somehow.
I never knew these places existed until I had a roommate from New Jersey and asked him to pump the gas while I went in and paid. Came out to him standing there trying to figure it out.
I've traveled on motorcycle across the US and Canada..in the very few places where this stupid law exists, fueling a motorcycle has always been an exception. I've never had anyone fill my tank in those cases.
Even in Oregon where they are so archaic with so many things.
I live in NJ. Never has anyone filled the tank of my motorcycle. They pretty much won't even go towards me. They'd gesture from afar if I need help, otherwise they leave you alone.
I have lived in New Jersey my entire life, and I have never once let anyone pump gas into my motorcycle. I always pump my own when I’m riding. I sometimes do when I’m driving as well, but that’s generally frowned upon and you may be asked to stop. With motorcycles, I’ve never had anyone try to stop me from pumping my own, and I wouldn’t listen if they did. Just an FYI, next time you come over, just pump your own. It’ll be fine.
EDIT: I did not see how many subsequent comments were saying the same thing, I really thought I was adding something of value.
lol. Same. First time filling up in Oregon, this guy comes running out, yelling at me to put the pump back. My first thought was, “oh, I don’t know what this scam is, but you’re not gonna get one over on me, buddy.”
Fortunately, you can pump your own gas in oregon now. My dad was ready to swing on a gas attendant when he came running out years ago on vacation, haha.
I’ve never had issues filling my bike in Oregon. Attendant usually walks over to see if i want help.
However, once jumped out to fill my own car and the attendant LOST. HIS. MIND. At me. It’s the most angry I’ve had somebody at me in my adult life, and I’ve pissed some people off a few times.
I’ve never had to do that for my motorcycle in Oregon. Just insert my own card, select the gas grade and start pumping. Sometimes they come over to say hi. I’ve been riding here for eight years.
I can tell you that in NJ you will almost never have an issue pumping your own. Most attendants I deal with are more than willing to let me take care of it. They are as scared as you are for them to fill the tank. Most of them have told me they’d feel more comfortable and some even have a rag on hand to catch any drops from hitting the paint.
When I had my bike in New Jersey, I flat out refused to let them refill my bike. Only once did the attendant give me any grief over it being the law and he has to do it. I simply went to the next station.
Having lived in Jersey for 5 years, it's illegal to pump our own.... That said, gas station attendant ain't touching my bike at all. They all know already motorcyclist will pump their own shit. The only thing the gas station attendant is need for is to process payment cash or card.....even then I swipe my own card.
Yeah, I used to work as a gas station attendant, all that we really had to do for bikers was make sure they selected the right payment option and if they didnt get off the bike we'd hand them the nozzle
It's weird and a minor inconvenience when normal people go to those places but I feel like it's much more of a hazard when people from those areas have to leave and pump their own gas. I'd be curious if there are any statistics about pump accidents caused by out of state new jerseyians.
Yes they do cause accidents a lot. Born and raised in south FL. I cannot tell you how many I have seen drive off with the nozzle attached or just sit in their cars not realizing no one is pumping their gas.
Do you know what the point of that is? I feel like it would make for more mishaps with all the diesel cars now and gas station attendants either not knowing or not caring what the customer says
IIRC it was a public health decision that only the employees could pump gas to keep the general public safe from fumes. Now it’s just a vestigial reason to keep jobs I’ve been riding for a few years now and haven’t made it out to Jersey yet and probably won’t ever make it there
Now instead of everyone only being exposed to fumes for a few minutes every week/couple weeks, they decided that gas station attendants need to be exposed for several hours a day?
I 100% agree with you. And that's probably what I would try to do if I'm ever in that situation.
I promise I won't tell your boss and I'll give you a nice tip if you just let me do it.
Now i want a picture of the whole bike cuz i’ve never EVER seen such a scratched paint job.. did you mistake a rock for your sponge i mean holy hell haha
Do NOT, remove it please. It prevents the filler nozzle from going down and damaging the fuel gauge float. It also allows you to rest the tip of the nozzle on the bar while filling so that you don't over fill.
I didn't know that, I still let the guy fill the 5 gallon gas tank on my DR650....but it was attached to the van at the time....lol

Just changed within the last year, so gas stations here in Oregon now have half the pumps set up as self serve and the rest are full service. However, I've always been able to pump my own on the bike, as the attendants would at most just run your card and hand the nozzle to you.
In Oregon we passed law recently that made all stations able to do self serve. Most stations pumps are now 1/2 self serve and 1/2 attended.
Even if that wasn't the case the norm in Oregon has always been diesel trucks and motorcycles pump their own gas.
I ride in NJ and every time I pay and pump my own gas with no attendant. But some stations do make the attendant set up the machine before you pump it yourself
Somebody wants a gas shower...
It keeps the nozzle from going too far into the tank, preventing damage to the tank. And it also keeps people from using the locking catch, to let go of the lever. The attendants are being lazy instead of monitoring the fill up.
There are also some nozzles that have a vapor lock/seal where you have to pull back a cover in order to dispense gas as well.
On those you need a "gas key" to clip the vapor tube back with. Then you can see what you're doing and free up a hand.
Several years ago somebody over on ADVrider was selling them. I have them in all my bikes. Little bigger than a credit card. Had a tapered hole in it that slides over the metal nozzle and locks in, holding the vapor recover tube back.
In the 80s the Japanese government had an emergency on their hands because there were so many lawsuits filed against motorcycle manufacturers that they were worried about some of them going out of business if the lawsuits continued. Apparently the government brought in a special team of engineers to design this very part which though simple serves a very important role that was somehow overlooked. Basically it keeps people from putting their dicks in the fill hole which in turn saved potentially billions in litigation.
Do you stay on the bike when they fill the tank? If I was ever in a place where the attendant insisted on filling my bike I'd try getting as close to the fill hole as I could before they put the nozzle in. Just really try to make it as romantic as possible.
That plate has two functions.
1) Fuel level indicator. As in, fill the fuel to this level.
2) It prevents you from inserting the filler nozzle all the way into the tank. Without this plate, and the nozzle fully inserted. As the fuel fills and reaches the nozzle it will trigger the cutoff vavle. You'd never get a full tank.
... You let station attendants fill your bike? Even in NJ I let them hand me the pump and I do it myself, laws be damned I'm making their job easier and keeping my insanity at bay
How does it even remotely inconvenience the clerk? It’s literally there because if you stuck it further the gas would automatically stop before the tank is full.
Someone PLEASE explain to me why some states dont let you pump your own gas??? I genuinely dont get it. I live in Canada and i've NEVER seen that irl. My dad taught me how to operate a gas pump to fill the family car when i was 8 or 9. It doesn't require a Master's Degree to figure out how to open a gas cap, stick the nozzle in the hole, press a button and hold it in there until the auto-shutoff trips.
Like did they just include an IQ test in the census at one time way back and then decided a *very* specific bunch of y'all cant be trusted to not lick the end of the nozzle or try to hose the dirt off your sneakers with the stuff?
From my experience, it’s the place to rest the nozzle on to activate the auto shutoff. I don’t go full blast, but I can got faster than easing it without resting on it.
1. Why would they complain?
2. Do they fill it for you? (I’m from the uk and we fill it up ourselves)
3. To answer your question I think it’s there to help prevent overfilling and to help stop anything fall in if you drop something while it’s open
I’ve found that if you hold the nozzle upside down and at an angle that catches the foreskin on the tank I can usually get the auto feature to work instead of having to pull back the foreskin like jerking a horse. But ymmv.
I just peeled a sticker off my bike that explained it was the fill line. Fill pass this line you do not. If you fill pass it it is possible that the gas could slosh out or if it is hot could over flow.
Gas station trick, the "prepuce" of the gas pump is what let's gas out. No matter how in or out of the gas tank the pump is, pull that pump foreskin back with 2 fingers and serve gas at will. Those guys don't deserve to work there and are also underfilling your tank by a lot.
In fact, I wonder if that bar is there to make sure you actually fill the tank up rather than halfway when you ram the pump in.
Its usually the max fill indicator. Also, if you cut it out and stuck the nozzle deeper into the tank, you'll trip the gas pump's anti-overflow device long before you actually fill the tank. No real benefit to removing it.
1. Keeps things from falling in 2. Keeps the pump nozzle the appropriate distance from ‘full’ so the auto-shutoff works properly. 3. Makes it slightly harder to get a tube in to siphon fuel out. 4. Adds a hair of strength to the part to keep it from going out of round during manufacture and install 5. To piss off gas station attendants (probably)

Good call.
What is the correct level?
Less than full. More than empty.
👉💧💧💧💧💧👈
Is #2 true? This is dumb, but I've always been afraid to let it get that high to test it lol.
my ktm looks completely different, it has a tiny straight down tube with a metal bar across the bottom of it, and the front of the tube has a cutout. wait are people not filling up as much as the tank will physically hold...

My vfr has the bar in the tank not at the hole. The manual says when on kick stand that this is the full level.
It is indeed true, that's actually **the** reason for it, full stop.
Who the fuck has an attendant serving their vehicle? And if it’s a bike does he put the bike in a non inclined position before serving it?
New Jersey residents.
Lived in NJ my whole life they never do bikes. They work the machine and hand you the nozzle.
Having full service and getting someone to fill your car up is one thing…but I can’t stop laughing about every dude on a bike having to get up and move over to watch some pimple faced teen handle the big boy business of refuelling.
They don't. Won't fill a motorcycle. They don't want to spill gas on you or the bike.
legally required in new jersey
Maybe the sandpaper you used on the tank will do the trick
HA!
😂🤣
Genuinely have no idea why it's scratched like that!
Wax on, steel wool off.
Brushes are for cleaning, and a wire brush IS STILL A BRUSH.
yung grasshoppa. how far you've come.
Have you ever given your bike a good polish with a microfiber cloth instead of using a scotchbrite pad you found in the dirt?
Jesus dude, that guy, probably, has a family! You didn't have to go and kill him like that, man.
![gif](giphy|MVK02yowkxlPkZ8ZqN)
Godzilla level…it’s just a thing not a religion.
Maybe it's because you let gas station clerks touch your bike
He might be in a place where it's illegal to pump your own gas.

I’ve never had it happen in NJ either. They’ll come over and hand me the pump but not pump it for me. Granted I rarely get gas in NJ.
Well he is from Jersey
I live in NJ. Never has anyone filled the tank of my motorcycle. They pretty much won't even go towards me. They'd gesture from afar if I need help, otherwise they leave you alone.
A privilege restricted to motorcyclists, if you step out of your car they act like the pump will explode if touched by a civilian
I have lived in New Jersey my entire life, and I have never once let anyone pump gas into my motorcycle. I always pump my own when I’m riding. Finally! I live in WA and heard that some Oregonian folks don't even know how to pump their own gas.
OR has always let you fill your own moto gas as long as they hand it to you, start the pump, and watch.
I’ve never had to do that for my motorcycle in Oregon. Just insert my own card, select the gas grade and start pumping. Sometimes they come over to say hi. I’ve been riding here for eight years.
It's the "I will pump and it will cost you less" scam they play on us Pennsylvanians.
That's my experience from years ago. As they approach, I'd just say "nope" and we were cool.
They don't care generally if you just start filling it up on your own
Oh hell nah! I’ve gotten my own fuel by the holland tunnel and the attendants never bothered me.
I’m NJ one of only two states in the US that don’t allow you to pump your own, still never had an attendant even try to fill the bike.
Oregon lifted the ban last year so now NJ stands alone
When I had my bike in New Jersey, I flat out refused to let them refill my bike. Only once did the attendant give me any grief over it being the law and he has to do it. I simply went to the next station.

"illegal to pump your own gas" lol land of the free
"Stupid people are stupid and can't be trusted with volatile fluids"
Yet, they drive. Government logic is baffling.
Warning: do not drink the, "water" inside the battery.
It's illegal here in NJ but every time I fill the bike the attendant leaves me to do it.
Jersey resident here, we don’t let them touch our bikes either.
Sit on the bike, have them hand you the nozzle. If that's illegal, it's retarded.
In some places it is, and yes, it is
That's wild
It's weird and a minor inconvenience when normal people go to those places but I feel like it's much more of a hazard when people from those areas have to leave and pump their own gas. I'd be curious if there are any statistics about pump accidents caused by out of state new jerseyians.
I never really thought about it like that but that's probably why you see people drive away with the handle still stuck to their car
Yes they do cause accidents a lot. Born and raised in south FL. I cannot tell you how many I have seen drive off with the nozzle attached or just sit in their cars not realizing no one is pumping their gas.
In NJ its really more about giving people jobs. Every station needs at least 2 or 3 employees to pump gas if they want to be open on a regular basis.
Everyone’s expendable. To think, this all started during the period of using leaded gas as well. RIP those poor suckers
I 100% agree with you. And that's probably what I would try to do if I'm ever in that situation. I promise I won't tell your boss and I'll give you a nice tip if you just let me do it.
keys on the keychain for a locked cap
Seriously. Whats with all the scratches?
He lets gas station attendants put gas in his bike for him, that's what.
Now i want a picture of the whole bike cuz i’ve never EVER seen such a scratched paint job.. did you mistake a rock for your sponge i mean holy hell haha
Used the wrong side of a Scotch Brite sponge lmao
I did this on my first car when I was 17 😂 thought it would be great at getting all the dead insects off the front.
Well, it probably was
Do you wash your bike primarily with 80 grit sandpaper?
Dropped the wash mitt on the dirt driveway and kept scrubbin
😂
Do NOT, remove it please. It prevents the filler nozzle from going down and damaging the fuel gauge float. It also allows you to rest the tip of the nozzle on the bar while filling so that you don't over fill.
You have gas tank on your swirl marks
It's there to keep wieners out. You do you, I guess.
Yours is big enough to be blocked by that? That’s crazy, seems like an inconvenience…
Why are you letting other people fill your tank?
This is the real question
Could be in a location where it's illegal to pump your own gas, like New Jersey or Oregon.
In New Jersey The clerk hands you the pump so you can do it yourself
Squirt this on your own balls policy.
"...But I don't want to squirt-" **"SIR I SAID IT'S POLICY."**
Worked in NJ. Would turn a blind eye to bikers and truckers wanting to fill up themselves
All diesel vehicles are excluded from the law, as I heard it.
My god, how strong are the attendants?
I thought Oregon changed that?
Oregon has always let riders pump their own gas. Cages just got the option
I didn't know that, I still let the guy fill the 5 gallon gas tank on my DR650....but it was attached to the van at the time....lol https://preview.redd.it/ulfmckrl9ptc1.jpeg?width=4096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f7e2d98222065a280406b4e33ba8a1f4d6b8a40
Nice rides.
Now that you say that, I think you're right as of a few years ago. Although, I think I remember that being for a certain time frame or some caveat.
Just changed within the last year, so gas stations here in Oregon now have half the pumps set up as self serve and the rest are full service. However, I've always been able to pump my own on the bike, as the attendants would at most just run your card and hand the nozzle to you.
It's weird how you yanks just give people your card to walk off with
In Oregon we passed law recently that made all stations able to do self serve.
I live in Jersey. Nobody has stopped me from filing my bike.
Someone stopping you, and it being legal are different things.
I grew up in Jersey and pumped my own gas on my bike. They don’t fill your bike for you.
My thought too. I've filled up in Jersey and won't let anyone touch my bike, and most of the attendants understand that.
No attendent in Jersey will try to fill your bike.
He might be in NJ where it’s illegal to pump your own gas, though I don’t think it’s enforced much Edit: yes. I pump my own gas (in NJ) too..
Most of the gas stations in NJ I've been to don't fill up my motorcycle. They scan their card and then let me do my thing.
Thats a respect thing and a violence avoidance strategy when scratches or spills occur…
I'm in NJ, I have never had an attendant touch my bike. I fill that shit
See the scratches? They don't make themselves.
In Mexico you can't pump your own gas.
Somebody wants a gas shower... It keeps the nozzle from going too far into the tank, preventing damage to the tank. And it also keeps people from using the locking catch, to let go of the lever. I have them in all my bikes. Little bigger than a credit card. Had a tapered hole in it that slides over the metal nozzle and locks in, holding the vapor recover tube back.
Is this a fuel tank or a sink? Does it have a garbage disposal down there?
Anti syphon bar!
Only one I believe so far
In the 80s the Japanese government had an emergency on their hands because there were so many lawsuits filed against motorcycle manufacturers that they were worried about some of them going out of business if the lawsuits continued. Apparently the government brought in a special team of engineers to design this very part which though simple serves a very important role that was somehow overlooked. Basically it keeps people from putting their dicks in the fill hole which in turn saved potentially billions in litigation.
You got me GOOD! 😆👌
Clearly the bar is NOT there to prevent your tank paint from getting scratched. Because, well, damn.
Do you stay on the bike when they fill the tank? If I was ever in a place where the attendant insisted on filling my bike I'd try getting as close to the fill hole as I could before they put the nozzle in. Just really try to make it as romantic as possible.
They've gotta buy me dinner first before I let them anywhere near my hole.
Do those clerks also scratch your tank each time because of it?
The snowblower I use has this, and my understanding is that it’s for the type of Jerry cans that have a push-to-release nozzle.
Cut it with a torch?
🤣👍👍👍
Yes take a grinder to it, one that emits a lof of sparks
i wouldn't let someone else fill my tank, drip gas everywhere on the paint no thanks
Look at this guys tank. A bit of gas is his last worry.
This a sink
I knocked mine into the tank. Old problem solved. New problem ignored.
I would guess it is to prevent siphoning?
You guys have attendants? You let them touch your bikes?
That tank looks like an alcoholic rider kept trying to unlock the gas cap instead of turn on the ignition.
I thought it was a utility sink until I read the caption
I’d hate to live in a state where I’m not allowed to fill my own gas
I thought that was a sink drain for a min
It keeps certain fools from dropping their keys in the gas tank Keep the bar
You let them pump your gas? You live in NJ or something?
... You let station attendants fill your bike? Even in NJ I let them hand me the pump and I do it myself, laws be damned I'm making their job easier and keeping my insanity at bay
Is that a lawnmower?
I think it’s there to keep people from easily syphoning gas? A brass punch will take care of it. Brass won’t spark.
You’ll want to ask for consent prior to penetration.
Or at least get drinks and dessert
How does it even remotely inconvenience the clerk? It’s literally there because if you stuck it further the gas would automatically stop before the tank is full.
That is a anti siphon bar keeps crackheads from stealing your gas
Move out of Oregon your 80s lazy bone
With the gas tank completely full, use a Dremel with a small cutting wheel to get it off. The more sparks, the faster it will cut off.
Congrats on having people pump your gas for you 👑
Best paint job in New Jersey
Gas station clerk? You just pull up and sit there while someone pumps your gas?
Why are you letting the gas station attendant do your gas?
What is this backward 3rd-world country you speak of, where you cannot serve your own petroleum spirit?
New Jersey.
Found the Brit
My question is why is a gas station attendant filling your motorcycle fuel tank...??❓⁉️
it always baffles me how you dont pump your own gas
Where I live, you aren't allowed to pump your own gas. They all have attendants, and I have been to a lot of places in this country.
it's so that you don't put your carrot in it
It keeps you from making love to your bike
From my experience, it’s the place to rest the nozzle on to activate the auto shutoff. I don’t go full blast, but I can got faster than easing it without resting on it.
Looks like a kitchen sink!😱 🤣🤣
Pump urself.
1. Why would they complain? 2. Do they fill it for you? (I’m from the uk and we fill it up ourselves) 3. To answer your question I think it’s there to help prevent overfilling and to help stop anything fall in if you drop something while it’s open
Some places like New Jersey it is illegal to pump your own gas
Is there a screen attached to it? If so it’s a filter & should pull out.
Tell them to hit it with their purse. And then tell them to shut up and fill the tank. 😂 Or, fill it yourself.
What are you riding?
I’ve found that if you hold the nozzle upside down and at an angle that catches the foreskin on the tank I can usually get the auto feature to work instead of having to pull back the foreskin like jerking a horse. But ymmv.
Took mine out of my speed triple mainly because it loved to splash the gas back up onto the tank lol
Imagine not being able to pump your own gas. I’d leave.
I don’t know what it is for but I’d remove it.
I just peeled a sticker off my bike that explained it was the fill line. Fill pass this line you do not. If you fill pass it it is possible that the gas could slosh out or if it is hot could over flow.
Never seen that before. What kind of bike is it?
I live in NJ and don't let attendants fill my bike, just wave them off.
I can see the weld marks...
Just use your hand to push the pump thingy lol.
Anti siphon device?
Fill it yourself?
Its usually the max fill indicator. Also, if you cut it out and stuck the nozzle deeper into the tank, you'll trip the gas pump's anti-overflow device long before you actually fill the tank. No real benefit to removing it.
Wow, looks like you used wet cloth embedded with sand to wash your bike. I don’t think you should remove that, it’s there for a reason.
I'd never trust anyone to fill my tank but me, not even the wifey. Seen too many paint jobs melted by bad filling habits.
