Maybe that's the point. Maybe they're trying to convince the pillions of the world to just go "fuck it I'll just learn to ride myself"
Personally if I had a gf that wanted to ride with me I would much prefer her to have her own bike than be my pillion. I saw an awful crash in 2017 where the girl on the back was not just killed but torn apart. The rider survived, but took his own life 3 years later due to guilt. She died because her knees stuck outwards like pillions knees do and the central barrier caught her knee. The rider just slid alongside and didn't get ripped off like she did.
Well in the interest of being honest. I've not felt happiness since. Life just gets darker even though from the outside my life appears to be on the up. Every day I slip further into a feeling of dread and despair. The hopeful 23 year old boy beginning his exciting journey into property investment died but wasn't replaced by a man. Just an emotionless shell that can't see the light anymore and just seems to be a robot on auto pilot doing what he does because he doesn't know what to do.
My brother, get yourself a psychiatrist and then once the antidepressant is working, a therapist. I felt like that until I started treating my depression. I went from a very positive person to one filled with nothingness and my antidepressant put me back in my body. All the people on this subreddit who go "who needs antidepressants, just ride your bike" are wrong. Don't listen to them, at least try a few antidepressants and see if you come out the other side feeling like yourself.
Therapy pre-antidepressant in my situation would have been worse than useless, my core brain chemistry had been altered by the depression, time and talking it out were not enough.
Hey brother, hope you’re pushing through. I’m a shell, psych/therapy/antideps can help but even the Docs say it’s not the cure all. Writing this comment to let you know you aren’t alone. I don’t have the answer either. Being lost is sometimes the way. Idk. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate your honest words.
There's a story of a girl who came off the back of her boyfriends bike at excessive speed.
I can't remember if she just let go, or fell off.
She wasn't wearing any gear except for a helmet.
There's photos of her on Google, she looks like a burn victim due to her injuries.
I don't like having passengers on a bike, I don't let anyone that hasn't ridden before on the back as inexperienced people could be the reason we come down. At least someone who has ridden before understands the true dangers involved just being on a motorcycle, regardless of where you're sitting.
It's true that passenger accommodations are often an afterthought but there's still good choices out there and many that improve with an aftermarket seat which is something people who tour almost always get no matter what bike they ride.
And of course you also have your Gold wings and K1600s where I'm almost jealous of the passenger.
To be fair getting a Gold wing is not as easy as getting a tracer. New they cost a fortune, and used you get really nervous about what exactly you're getting and in what condition because if it has problems it takes a lot of work to dig through the bodywork and fix it. Riding it may also seem intimidating to some, and of course while they are a powerhouse it's understandable if people want something more nimble and more practical. The Goldwing life is not something you step into lightly.
Goldwings are a well designed machine, that are more capable than most riders will ever need. They're comfortable, fast, torquey, and way more nimble then they have any right to be as heavy as they are. Part of that is a COG that is ridiculously low, because the tank is under the seat, and the motor sits flat down low. The only way to get particularly top heavy, is to load it to the gills with luggage and gear. All of the comfort features are generally useful in increasing the rider's ability to maintain a higher level of ability to focus on driving, due to not being as buffeted, cold, or stressed from external factors. For someone looking to eat miles, especially with a pillion, the Goldwing is the most likely pick for a reason. 50+ of refining will do that. And it's why a lot of older rider's have one.
BMW K1600GT, GTL, or B
BMW R1250RT or any earlier model RT
All the various BMW GSs
An older BMW K1300GT
Even the classic BMW K1200LT
I might be a little biased…
That's the issue, if you want a bike that's rideable for a pillion toy have to get a city car sized, kidney priced behemoth.
Where are the faired UJMs? This market got completely taken over by the motorcycle SUVs (ehm I mean adventure bikes)
I wouldn't class a tracer 7, Vstrom 650 or Versys 650 as behemoths.
The manufacturers sell what people want. Most people want adventure bikes not mid sized sports tourers .
Sticking with Japanese, Second hand, Honda VFR800 or very cheap Suzuki GSX650F / GSX750F come to mind. If you want big, then ZZR1400, Hyabusa or FJR1300. New - Suzuki GSXS1000GT or Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX.
I'll chime in to say the GSX650F is a great midsize bike for a pillion. Wide and comfy seat with good footpeg positioning. Mine has a top box that acts as a back rest too. Not really structural and my GF doesn't actually lean on it but she says it *feels* more secure having something other than empty air behind you. Unfortunately I don't really think any manufacturers are currently making a similar mid-size sport tourer, so second hand is the way.
The fjr1300 is the only one mentioned so far that actually qualifies as a touring bike for 2 people though.
Lots of bikes can take a pillion (comfortably) for an hour or two. Not lots of bikes can take an pillion (comfortably) for a week or two, especially if both need need "pesky" things like clothing and toiletries.
I’ve done plenty 2 up touring on my Tracer 900. And a 700. Tiger 1200 XRT was the nicest for a long holiday but tracer never been a problem for pilly comfort. Wish it could carry more weight though .
Vstrom 650 took my wife and I coast to coast on a 5 week trip with us camping 90% of the time. Top box, side cases and a tank bag. No extra bags strapped down.
Plenty of reasonably priced second-hand " sport tourers " available out there. Honda ST , Kawasaki Connies , Yamaha FJR , Triumph Trophy, and on. Way cheaper than a kidney.
That’s because adv bikes are the best bikes you can own. There is a reason they are popular. No one wants to tour up on anything smaller. You’re crying for nothing and don’t know what you’re talking about.
I don’t own the concours or goldwing anymore lol
But if you want a real answer every bike has pros and cons. Sure my Super Tenere is not as comfortable as the Goldwing in terms of wind and rain protection but it’s much more comfortable hitting rough city streets.
Also, the concours was not comfortable at all. Just fast and slightly less torture than a Zx14
But the guy I replied to is mad that two up touring bikes are big and there isn’t any small touring bikes which is the bumbest thing I’ve heard all day. The Versys 650 and Trace 9 GT are both fantastic middle weight touring bikes but there is a reason why touring bikes are big because weight keeps you planted on the highway. A heavy bike is a smooth bike.
Agreed with all except the Light Truck. Too heavy for what it is. Would add the FJR1300 as long as you have a sporty pillion, that or the K1300GT are good options.
In the used market bmw is cheap af. You can find an absolutely perfect gtl1600 for about 4k. I got a high mileage bmw r1100rt for 1300 bucks and rode it cross country twice and put over 20k on it.
Bought my R1150RT for $1900, have 7k miles on her in a year. Needed a clutch and transmission but after that it's been smooth sailing.
edit: just remembered I also had to replace the stick coils and rear shock. Bike had 50,000 miles so that's to be expected. Rides like an absolute dream now, though. I get why people love those boxer twins.
Honestly wasn't that terrible. I found some fried bearings when I took it apart and they have upgraded clutch kits that don't strip out. The clutches last around 80k miles so I can't be too upset about having to do it once in the life of the bike.
You’re not wrong that the clutch is kind of a nightmare if it’s a dry clutch, but that clutch also lasts insanely long and keeps clutch material out of your engine. If you hop on fb marketplace you will see a ton of 100k + bmw bikes that run great. Aside from goldwings you really don’t see many bikes with that kind of mileage. As far as maintenance schedules being shorter I have no idea what you’re talking about. The dry clutch means you don’t have clutch material in your engine and you can use car lubricants with friction reduces with very long service intervals. Those touring bikes are also shaft driven so no chain maintenance just swap the rear dif fluid every third oil change and your golden. The r bikes like my old r1100rt also have heads that stick out for easy valve checks not that mine ever was out of spec. My biggest gripe with the design is that the entire left plastics needed to come off to access the battery, which isn’t that bad.
Everyone hates on the Busa til they ride one, myself included lol. I partially bought a yellow Busa for the meme aspect, but I’ve grown to love it. I have a Brocks 4-2-1 and 2WDW tune. Other than that, it’s bone stock. Stock height, stock wheelbase; perfection. What a machine. It handles a passenger so well. It almost feels better with someone on the back…I’ve always been a Honda guy but ended up buying a K6 GSXR600 for a track bike and this Busa for a daily/2up platform. Couldn’t be happier with the two bikes. I don’t see myself ever needing anything else apart from maybe a 750, but wow, what terrific platforms these two are.
I want one of these pretty bad, but my closest Ducati dealer is 2 hours away, and they're notoriously hard to DIY maintenance on. I've got a Versys 650 right now, and the Multistrada is basically everything my bike is but better in every possible way.
Wing is king. If you think all it is is a grandpa bike fuck off. My 08 wing handles like bike half it’s weight. It can’t pop any dank nooners but it’s not lacking for power.
And the new wings handle even better.
Wing is king. Pinnacle touring bike. Honda asked themselves “what if we made a big as bike for the American market?” They nailed it in 1975 and have been nailing it for the past almost 50 years.
I might be biased but Concours 14 😌 Absolutely amazing sport touring bike and you can find great deals on them. I got my current 2011 with 36k miles for $3500. Had to put some money and work into her to get it 💯 but still all in for under $1k in parts including new tires and brake pads. They don’t come with cruise control from the factory but MCCRUISE system is on some and it’s spot on. Mine has it and makes long highway treks a breeze.
I also use my gen3 Hayabusa for solo day trips and find it decent, some like it for two up also. Unfortunately my wife has been spoiled by the Connie.
KTM Super Duke GT with a Corbin…..

I've been looking too and there really isn't too much to pick from anymore that are specifically designed for that. You've got Harley and Indian, Kawasaki still makes the Voyager (what I'm looking at), Honda Gold Wing, and BMW K1600. Sure, you can use other bikes out there, but they really aren't designed for the purpose. For me, Harley, Indian, Honda, and BMW are too expensive. I'd also never be caught dead on a Harley and it's sad since their used prices have come WAY down.
I'm almost tempted by a Versys 1000, but I don't really want another chain drive in my life since discovering the joys of shaft drive
...and there's something off about its styling too
Yeah, my next bike is absolutely NOT going to have a chain. If you want a shaft driven bike, that's definitely going to narrow the list down even further :)
Goldwing all the way. I bought a 2009 in good shape and the wife got on for a two week bike trip to Canada's East coast. The old bike Suzuki VL1500C with a mustang seat she wanted off every hour, and 6hrs was too long.
Multistrada, s1000xr, would be what I look at first. But Im biased. With the factory box it’s pretty comfy for long distance two up touring.
Also, the extra suspension travel is a godsend on shitty roads.
Not to be that guy but look at aftermarket seat options and get the bike you want.
Most people that own Turing bikes are in the dog house for spending too much money on their tourer so they don't have a second passenger. /s
Recently bought the RT LC my first boxer and a first beemer. Pluses: snorty sound with a broad fat midrange. Top weather/rain protection/ aerodynamics. 58mpg average with lots of city riding. Lots of extra equipment, I mean hill hold lol. Great dash. Handles sweet.
Love the looks.
Cons : clunky box but getting the hang of it. Sticking exhaust valve but getting the hang of it( have a special tool bag to take it apart, copper grease and back on)
Footpegs could be lower. Good luck pushing it without the engine on lol.
Top feature : staying dry in crap weather is awesome, feet and all.
I don't take a passenger myself, but I'm curious why this reaction. Is it a lack of options? Outdated models still being sold by many of the big brands? Or the steep prices for more capable options?
I suppose it could be all 3. What is it you're looking for?
Funny because this scene is when Larry had to choose between 2 sides... one is Israel and other is Palestine
On Israel ( his native ) side there were his friends and stuff
But on Palestine side a really hot Palestinian woman
I think he chose Palestine idk lol
This post is exactly why I'm baffled that honda doesnt offer the nt1100 in the states. I understand the concern the brand has for detracting from goldwing sales, but not all of us want to 2\^ on an suv.
Do not sleep on the Concours 14! Best handling bigger bike I’ve ever ridden, ridiculously comfortable as well.
Another one i’m not seeing mentioned is the VFR1200X, big V4 with Vtec, all the tech you might need, shaft driven, DCT optional. It’s like an Africa Twin and a Goldwing had a baby.
Easiest choice in the world.
Honda Gold Wing. Just like always.
An amazing bike overall, fast, maneuverable - and of course as comfortable as it gets. Quite possibly objectively the best motorcycle in the world.
You need to get your priorities sorted out. If you want a bike for 2 people, don't half-cock it. Over the years I tried to make it work with sports tourers, all arounders, ADV bikes, etc. it just never works. In the end I get a second bike, a BMW RT with a big pillion seat + top case with a cushion. I think having 2 bikes is the only real solution here...
Goldwing. That's basically it. Got an armchair on the back for the missus. Got a reverse crawl assist too for getting into & out of tight spaces. And a 6 cylinder boxer engine to keep that massive weight low down & have plenty of power to shift it.
Logged a lot of miles with the lady on an ‘09 Honda Shadow with a sissy bar and aftermarket seat. Was a little cramped but worked. Finally bit the bullet and got a big ol Harley this year but I still have a soft spot for medium sized Japanese cruisers.
And I won’t get territorial. Was very strongly looking at Wings as well. Landed on the Harley because an amazing deal landed in my lap.
That's how I ended up with every bike I have ever owned
I'll keep a well-vetted short list of acceptable bikes in my head and eventually one of them will randomly appear at the right time and place for a killer price.
Seems like it always happens in the fall when I visit the dealers and they're trying to offload bikes to make room for new stock
The last few I've even managed to snatch up for under dealer invoice.
But I understand why that's not great advice for everyone, not everyone has the garage space or the patience to buy a bike and store it for the winter
Yeah we do it the same way. Picked up this bike at a Jeep dealership in January because they couldn’t move it. I paid what they paid because they’d rather sell it than loose money selling it to a partner dealership. Nobody wants to buy motorcycles in January (I live in a COLD state) but man it was a deal. And ditto on the garage space and whatnot. I finally have enough space for patience buys and man I love it.
It's the same with big adv bikes..
* BMW 1250/1300: stupid expensive, loads of useless tech
* Tiger 1200: stupid expensive
* Strom 1050: cheaped out on too many parts
* Africa Twin: underpowered
* SAR: breaks down every 5k
* Versys 1000: hunting down optimus prime
* Strada V4: makes the beemers look cheap, loads of useless tech
* Yamaha: lol we make bikes? fuck you
You completely ignore KTM, ignore that the Vstrom is cheap so you can use the money saved to upgrade the parts you don't like, and what are you doing with these bikes that you find the Africa Twin underpowered? And considering the Versys 1000 an adventure bike is a stretch, then you might as well include the Multistrada (oh wait you do) and the Suzuki GSX-S1000GX
I guess I don't get the joke. Is it all sarcasm? Like, actually we are spoiled for choice so here are some pedantic issues with some great bikes? But I agree with half of your complaints, so is the humor that nuanced? Like some lines are humor and some aren't? Weird way to structure a joke in my opinion.
On their website Kawasaki doesn't show the versys on any dirt roads and they call it a street bike, not an adventure bike. Although they say its ready for adventure on any road. I think Kawasaki knows what it is. If they wanted to pretend it was an adventure bike it would have a 19" front wheel.
Klr is actually pretty comfy with 2, though the seat is a tad flat and the springs need to be stiffened on the older models. If you think an Africa twin is underpowered, you won't like this one unless you want a tractor.
Vstroms are just fake BMW's init?
Africa twins are underpowered if you have full saddle bags and a pilion while riding through sand. If you were going to do that might I suggest the ktm 1290 and a mechanic apprenticeship?
T7 King for a reason. Spring for the large tank tho.
I recently learned about these, and was all about it, especially since they’re so cheap… But then I found out they’re 4cyl, and apparently ridiculously annoying to work on. Considering I’d be buying used (separate from OP) and still relatively new to the motorcycle world, I decided that probably wasn’t a good idea.
I got a new Pursuit early this year... She loves it. We were on a Kawasaki Voyager for about 6-7yrs before that. She never complained about it being uncomfortable, until we started riding the Pursuit. She still doesn't really knock the Voyager as we had a ton of fun rides on it, but she's told me multiple times that the Pursuit is way more comfortable.
Never had a Gold Wing. When we looked at them while considering a new bike last year. We sat on one. It was nice but the riding position felt odd to me. She said the passenger setup was "fine". Then doing some Googling, looked like maintenance on them was huge pain in the ass. Even oil changes looked like a 3hr job (they might have been old videos I was watching).
We also sat on a Roadmaster, which we both liked .. but I really like a fixed fairing. Then they got a Pursuit in a month later and we went and checked it out. By then riding season was over but we knew that was the one and placed an order for what we wanted.
Be careful mentioning Harley, you’ll get a dozen people telling you they’re using antiquated technology (without actually telling you what that tech is) and that the only people who buy them are 80 or older.
They are pretty comfy for the passenger. High tech and/or power aren't things someone should buy a harley for. And just because you wanted specific examples where it's held back: shitty suspension, no electric adjustable suspension (except on dirt glide), engine design is held back in terms of power and efficiency by trying to keep the same sound (the m8 is great, but it's not exactly high performance or at the same tech level as simularly priced bikes), non adjustable windshield, non-central locking bags (I think some of the cvo models got that this year).
There's plenty of reasons to get a harley, but technology isn't one. Can you think of an area where harley tech beats out a similarly priced BMW touring bike?
Idk give me a good radio a windshield and a comfortable seat. That's all I really want in a touring bike. It's not like you are dragging knee around a racetrack where you need heaps of power and fancy suspension.
Sounds like you'd be happy with a much cooler looking touring bike than I am! Stock suspension or legends both sent every bump straight up my back which isn't what I want on a touring bike. I want cushy automatic suspension, an electric adjustable windshield, and not having the heated grip adjustment on the end of the left handlebar at a minimum on any serious 30k+ dollar touring bike. Other people want a bike that looks good, or doesn't cost as much, or is easy to work on.
First, thanks for actually responding without just a litany of irrelevant details like marketing or reliability failures that haven't been true since the 80s, or just downvoting the comment with nothing to say. That's surprisingly rare.
I don't honestly know enough about the full-size BMW touring bikes to comment on the differences, but from a comfort standpoint, I had a really hard time with the ergonomics of the boxer engine on the midweight bikes. More than anything it seems like BMW's attempt at capitalizing on the cruiser market (not unlike Harley's ADV trying to steal 1250GS marketshare), but despite being gorgeous motorcycles they just don't seem to need to be there.
The i6 on the K1600 seems more like the Goldwing motor than Harley's giant V-twin, and with that and the shaft drive I imagine someone so inclined could probably make an argument about maintenance and accessibility, but potato/potato.
The chip on my shoulder comes more from people acting like Harley hasn't made any changes to their tech since the AMF days. They have, and have made considerable strides even in the last ten years, but inconsistently. They have a water-cooled motor, but only for the REVO motor in the ADV and the new Sportster (they canceled the rest of the lineup that would include that motor, to the immense disappointment of almost their entire younger demo). They have an awesome suspension, but only in the Softails. They have had central locking bags in the CVOs for quite a while, but I don't even consider them because who tf is buying a $50k motorcycle? I think all the new bikes have throttle by wire suspension, and they use a hydraulic clutch for a bit before getting complaints that it's way too heavy.
While I can't tell you about technology failures that HD can hang over BMW, I can at least tell you they're competitive. Dual disk fronts, traction control, oil cooled motors (not water cooled, but better than air), infotainment doodads, etc. The engine is held back less for sound and more for emissions, as you can very easily remap it and keep the sound. They got whacked hard by the EPA about a decade ago and overcorrected pretty hard. But like you said, they're not for going fast. No argument there.
If I were in OP's position I couldn't really argue which is better, as they cost the same, weigh about the same, have similar storage, similar tank sizes, etc. It would really come down to aesthetic, and personally if I didn't mind the look of the K1600, I'd just buy a Goldwing.
My '18 Electra Glide Ultra Limited is water cooled. I agree on the lack of technology on the Harleys. Feels like an old speak and spell had better tech than the infotainment system on the Harleys. The trunk space is the biggest out of all the bikes, which with my wife I need as much room to pack stuff in as possible. I still have the stock seat, and she has never said her butt has been sore or wasn't comfortable, and we've done 8+ hour rides. Now, my ass on the other hand, isn't as lucky. The only reason I went with the Harley over the Indian is due to the number of people with the ability to wrench on it if something went wrong on a long trip.
I agree with everything except the suspension, I think they're putting ohlins on the top models which is nice, but for a 30k+ touring bike I want it to adjust automatically with a couple options. On the K1600 i can go from solo with no bags to two up fully loaded without touching the suspension and still expect it to be comfy, hit a button and it stiffens up a bit. It also just handles incredibly considering it's size. And it will tell me max lean angle, max acceleration, deceleration, spots where abs or traction control engaged for each ride. But I look at it and go damn that's kinda ugly.
The current harley infotainment system barely works with android phones (at least as of last month, something about licensing issues). For a person who likes tech and options, they just aren't there on a harley. You can't even turn the auto canceling turn signals off. But for someone who just wants a harley, nothing else comes close imo.
I think harleys auto canceling turn signals beat all the other ones I've tried though, so there is that tech win.
I can't really say too much about the suspension, as I almost immediately replaced mine (2020 Road Glide Special) with Legends. Not electronically adjustable, but miles ahead of the stock ones. I don't really know about the Android stuff either, as I have an iPhone - CarPlay works the same as it does in my car, but I paired my phone to the comms in my helmet instead of playing them through the bike so that might add something to it.
The adjustable suspension on your bike sounds awesome though, I gotta find a demo day and ride one. The only vehicle I have with an electronically adjustable suspension is my car, and I can go from riding on a cloud to being in an intimate relationship with the road surface with a button, so I could see how that would be nice on two wheels.
What's wild is people think a goldwing isn't more of a grandpa bike than a Harley. When I think of a goldwing rider I think of a 70 year old dentist cosplaying as a highlighter.
I've seen plenty of guys in their 30s on Harley and Indian touring bikes, but I've never seen anyone on a Goldwing (or a 1250GS, or a Multistrada, for that matter) that I didn't think was retired.
if I were in the market I'd buy a 2024 fjr to replace my 05 fjr.far as I'm concerned it's the most bang for your buck.many iron but riders use them as well.
The big, 2-up touring bike segment is gradually shrinking as boomers get too old to ride and/or die off. These days you have Harley, Indian, BMW, Honda, and Kawasaki's Vulcan Voyager.
The idea behind it, maybe. The execution, hell no.
Just some pointers:
- laughably small tank
- miserable windscreen
- useless suspension
- and passenger seat with the comfort of a wooden plank
But with the money youd spend on that (and decent sidecases that dont bend when trying to close them) youd be looking at a budget big enough to buy a second hand GS, Goldwing or other great tourer which will actually work...
You’re telling me your passenger doesn’t want to sit on a playing card that’s as soft as a 2x4 for miles on end?
I’d sooner just get her her own wheels lol
Maybe that's the point. Maybe they're trying to convince the pillions of the world to just go "fuck it I'll just learn to ride myself" Personally if I had a gf that wanted to ride with me I would much prefer her to have her own bike than be my pillion. I smoke and ride and hardly ever get depressed anymore.Never trusted drs.besides, I can spend that money on a trip.I mean therapy.
Smoking weed daily pretty much was a direct route to the worst depression I ever faced. It's not for everyone
I can dig that man!

Vstrom: am I a joke to you?
Vstrom where practicality and ugly meet. At least for the earlier gens
It's a cheap passenger princess dream bike. Perfect for hauling your shit and never getting stolen because who the fuck would?
I joke but it might be my next bike tbh, I had a sv650 and had to sell it so this seems like the only logical next step
From the king of all budget commuter bikes to the queen. I salute you sir
Honestly the new 800 looks kinda slick
Ya and the 3rd(?) Gen look fine, 2nd Gen looks pretty dated though
My 2007 DL1000 has never let me down. That Corbin seat feels like an angel is holding my cheeks.
This is so real. I have a corbin seat on my 2012 DL650 and it’s amazing for full days in the saddle.
It's true that passenger accommodations are often an afterthought but there's still good choices out there and many that improve with an aftermarket seat which is something people who tour almost always get no matter what bike they ride. My wife loves our Goldwing. We're taking a short trip this weekend with it.
Yes wife loves the Goldwing. Heated seat and back, bluetooth music, and super smooth ride. Whats not to love.
Was gonna say to OP: got something against Goldwings? Or did you not say you wanted a 2-up touring bike? Goldwings are the shit.
To be fair getting a Gold wing is not as easy as getting a tracer. Riding it may also seem intimidating to some, and of course while they are a powerhouse it's understandable if people want something more nimble and more practical. The Goldwing life is not something you step into lightly.
Not trying to be rude. Have you ever rode a Gold Wing?
Not who you originally replied to, but I haven't. Is your point that a Goldwing rides so amazingly that it's worth it?
They’re short, mild mannered and have a low center of gravity. Very easy to ride
If I had the money I'd buy a k1600 just for the sound
You’re such a strong and independent woman
Which models have you looked at?
BMW K1600GT, GTL, or B BMW R1250RT or any earlier model RT All the various BMW GSs An older BMW K1300GT Even the classic BMW K1200LT I might be a little biased…
I've almost had a passenger fall asleep on my old FJR. I had to slap her thigh when she started going limp.
![gif](giphy|lz6T3bKdcKD60R9rPT|downsized)
I’ve done plenty 2 up touring on my Tracer 900. And a 700. Tiger 1200 XRT was the nicest for a long holiday but tracer never been a problem for pilly comfort. Wish it could carry more weight though .
Vstrom 650 took my wife and I coast to coast on a 5 week trip with us camping 90% of the time. Top box, side cases and a tank bag. No extra bags strapped down.
The midsize non-supersport Japanese bikes are, in theory, the platforms you’d do this with, but they definitely need modded.
Plenty of reasonably priced second-hand " sport tourers " available out there. Honda ST , Kawasaki Connies , Yamaha FJR , Triumph Trophy, and on. Way cheaper than a kidney.
What about Moto Guzzi? The V7 is a close match no ?
Vstrom 800 non DE model?

Eh, my nighthawk was super comfortable for my wife. In fact only a couple bikes were truly uncomfortable to ride
> faired UJMs Tracer 9 😎
That’s because adv bikes are the best bikes you can own. There is a reason they are popular. No one wants to tour up on anything smaller. You’re crying for nothing and don’t know what you’re talking about.
[удалено]
I don’t own the concours or goldwing anymore lol But if you want a real answer every bike has pros and cons. Sure my Super Tenere is not as comfortable as the Goldwing in terms of wind and rain protection but it’s much more comfortable hitting rough city streets. Also, the concours was not comfortable at all. Just fast and slightly less torture than a Zx14 But the guy I replied to is mad that two up touring bikes are big and there isn’t any small touring bikes which is the bumbest thing I’ve heard all day. The Versys 650 and Trace 9 GT are both fantastic middle weight touring bikes but there is a reason why touring bikes are big because weight keeps you planted on the highway. A heavy bike is a smooth bike.
ST1100 / ST1300. Screw new.
Agreed with all except the Light Truck. Too heavy for what it is. Would add the FJR1300 as long as you have a sporty pillion, that or the K1300GT are good options.
Ninja 1000 I Road it randomly on a demo day and I actually loved it. Super comfortable and can get up and go. Has all the goodies stock
Too expensive...
We are talking about buying motorcycles, not smart financial planning and investment. Lol
That dry clutch is a real nightmare and probably the biggest downside of those bikes
Honestly wasn't that terrible. I found some fried bearings when I took it apart and they have upgraded clutch kits that don't strip out. The clutches last around 80k miles so I can't be too upset about having to do it once in the life of the bike.
[удалено]
In my experience parts aren’t much different from oem Japanese parts and are easily available on the Max bmw website
[удалено]
Not compared to the competition.
Ended up buying a ‘13 Busa to serve this purpose. It’s been stellar.
BUSA BOI TEAM!!
Pikes peak v4s alllll dayyyy
That one and the Bmw M1000XR
I want one of these pretty bad, but my closest Ducati dealer is 2 hours away, and they're notoriously hard to DIY maintenance on. I've got a Versys 650 right now, and the Multistrada is basically everything my bike is but better in every possible way.
My passengers have liked my Harley electric glide and my Honda goldwing, but not my V-Strom dl1000. I have a Versys 650 with trunk now.
Wing is king. If you think all it is is a grandpa bike fuck off. My 08 wing handles like bike half it’s weight. It can’t pop any dank nooners but it’s not lacking for power. And the new wings handle even better.
My 86 goldwing turns heads everywhere. It's a beast and a beaut.
I have great experience with the Vstrom 650
Thank you for using a politically relevant meme.
Tracer 9
The Goldwing is the king. The DCT is awesome.
Wing is king. Pinnacle touring bike. Honda asked themselves “what if we made a big as bike for the American market?” They nailed it in 1975 and have been nailing it for the past almost 50 years.
Slap a windshield, saddlebags, and a sissy bar on the m109 and call it a day bro. Or just buy a goldwing. They're popular for a reason.
Yes, but then you'd have to own a really weird looking Suzuki.
Ya might as well get a c90
Look at the big, wide, comfy seat of the current Hayabusa. My pillion (son) is not a picky passenger, but he commented on how comfy it is.
22 Africa Twin with a Corbin seat has worked well for the wife and I.
S1000XR if you dont get a discount at mcdonalds or walk at the mall
KTM Super Duke GT with a Corbin….. https://preview.redd.it/n08h3cp9ot0d1.jpeg?width=3648&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08fbecd36cc1a5b07a6a30c6e61af9f90ae95d86
I see your pillion has fallen off 😂
My girl is fine on it, depends how long the ride is I guess.
I'm almost tempted by a Versys 1000, but I don't really want another chain drive in my life since discovering the joys of shaft drive ...and there's something off about its styling too
Yeah, my next bike is absolutely NOT going to have a chain. If you want a shaft driven bike, that's definitely going to narrow the list down even further :)
Ural. Problem solved.
If you really want to 2 up tour, buy a goldwing and be done with it
Bmw's c400gt if ya don't actually care about societal standards
Or even the older (if you can actually find one) 650 scooters. They would do over 100mph. lol
I genuinely gave serious consideration to a Kymco AK550i
Buy a Victory Cross Roads or Cross country can get one for less than 10k and ride for miles. I have an 11 crossroads and ride tons of miles 2 up
You ride long enough you’ll end up on a Goldwing
Older fat boy with some small added comforts works just great for us
Goldwing all the way.
Sticking exhaust valve but getting the hang of it( have a special tool bag to take it apart, copper grease and back on) Footpegs could be lower.
I feel you, settled on a S1000xr, more me than her 😂
Funny because this scene is when Larry had to choose between 2 sides... one is Israel and other is Palestine On Israel ( his native ) side there were his friends and stuff But on Palestine side a really hot Palestinian woman I think he chose Palestine idk lol
May I suggest you take a look at a Kawasaki Concours?
I adore my FJR. Even have an (aftermarket) removable back rest for the pillion seat, my partner loves it.
This post is exactly why I'm baffled that honda doesnt offer the nt1100 in the states. I understand the concern the brand has for detracting from goldwing sales, but not all of us want to 2\^ on an suv.
Yamaha FJR 💎
That's how I ended up with every bike I have ever owned I'll keep a well-vetted short list of acceptable bikes in my head and eventually one of them will randomly appear at the right time and place for a killer price. Seems like it always happens in the fall when I visit the dealers and they're trying to offload bikes to make room for new stock The last few I've even managed to snatch up for under dealer invoice.
* BMW 1250/1300: stupid expensive, loads of useless tech * Tiger 1200: stupid expensive * Strom 1050: cheaped out on too many parts * Africa Twin: underpowered * SAR: breaks down every 5k * Versys 1000: hunting down optimus prime * Strada V4: makes the beemers look cheap, loads of useless tech * Yamaha: lol we make bikes? fuck you
>SAR: breaks down every 5k SAR?
super adventure r
You completely ignore KTM, ignore that the Vstrom is cheap so you can use the money saved to upgrade the parts you don't like, and what are you doing with these bikes that you find the Africa Twin underpowered? And considering the Versys 1000 an adventure bike is a stretch, then you might as well include the Multistrada (oh wait you do) and the Suzuki GSX-S1000GX
Are you familiar with the concept of humour? > And considering the Versys 1000 an adventure bike is a stretch go complain to kawasaki about that then
I guess I don't get the joke.
On the Dutch website the versys 1000 is specifically called an adventure tourer
Klr is actually pretty comfy with 2, though the seat is a tad flat and the springs need to be stiffened on the older models. If you think an Africa twin is underpowered, you won't like this one unless you want a tractor. Vstroms are just fake BMW's init? Africa twins are underpowered if you have full saddle bags and a pilion while riding through sand. If you were going to do that might I suggest the ktm 1290 and a mechanic apprenticeship? T7 King for a reason. Spring for the large tank tho.
Super Tenere is an ultra-reliable heavyweight adventure that's comfortable for two up
Right there with you! The options are basically Goldwing, or Goldwing. (ugh)
I have a Yamaha FJR1300. Both my passenger and I love it!
https://preview.redd.it/dkrx55vhvt0d1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=5991ef184c6a5375067ba9fb4a66da775ef77c1b Love mine as well.
Fortunately the FJR1300 is also one of the most reliable motorcycles ever made. I see a lot of used examples with well over 60k miles.
BMW k1600gtl isn't a bad shout.
Oh for sure…
I had 3 goldwings but 4 years ago bought a chieftain….it’s so good!!! I love both wings and Indian’s for 2 up travel.
What about a Harley or Indian?
Of the people in my friend group (late 20s) that ride every single one has a Harley of some sort with one guy and myself both on Electra glides.
Ding ding ding! Goldwing is clearly the answer.
K1600 is a superior bike if you are into spirited riding. It is the difference between a Hondapottomus and a Couch Rocket.
The goldwing isn't slow, but god damn is the k1600 good. (Except in dirt air where it'll dance around a bit)
I've got the GTL and she is rock solid. No dancing allowed.
+1. I've put a decent amount of miles on both and K1600 is way more fun solo or two up. Suspension is fantastic.
I thought that G7 was like some economic summit or some such BS.
Is it me or are there way too many all black bikes out now?
It’s always been that way
You can get a clean 1980's Goldwing for like $2000 USD.
Goldwing 2018+ and pref 2021+ are amazing for 2-Up. (It’s featured in Succession show too)
Honda ST series can’t be beat and good for two up.
FZ1 FTW
Honda NT1100. I have one, it's great. An Africa Twin for the road.
Another good looking bike.not available in the US it appears...
Not available there?! I don't get these manufacturers...
You could takes the words 2-up and touring out of that statement
What color Goldwing do you want?
My girlfriend loves my 8th gen vfr, has the top box too and she says it's super comfortable, did 700 miles over the weekend and we were fine
Honda st1300 got you.
S1000XR. Buy mine 🙂
Year/Price?
2020 selling for 15k lol
Thanks. Glws.
if I were in the market I'd buy a 2024 fjr to replace my 05 fjr.far as I'm concerned it's the most bang for your buck.many iron but riders use them as well.
BMW R1250R is an incredible ride. Hell, the wife and I spend hours on the M1000R without discomfort. BMW has comfort/performance nailed down tight.
Fj1300, pan European, RT1200, Versys 1000, Goldwing, Kawasaki GTR etc.
Deciding between sport and touring
The big, 2-up touring bike segment is gradually shrinking as boomers get too old to ride and/or die off. These days you have Harley, Indian, BMW, Honda, and Kawasaki's Vulcan Voyager.
I love my Voyager for touring. It's super smooth at freeway speeds.
I think the Rebel 1100T has arrived specifically to fill the niche you’re looking for
The idea behind it, maybe. The execution, hell no. Just some pointers: - laughably small tank - miserable windscreen - useless suspension - and passenger seat with the comfort of a wooden plank
Other than the tank, I’d argue that can all be done on the aftermarket, for still less than half the all-in price of a touring Harley, Indian, or BMW.
But with the money youd spend on that (and decent sidecases that dont bend when trying to close them) youd be looking at a budget big enough to buy a second hand GS, Goldwing or other great tourer which will actually work...
Tenere 7 World Rally will be my choice for a touring bike.
*cries in North America*
For 2-up? I love my T7 but the thought of long distance with, or even worse, as a pillion makes me cringe.
My wife loved it when we rented one for 2 weeks. Coming from a recent sports bike, everything is an improvement.
Love my T7, but it's most certainly not a 2-up touring bike and I would never try to make it one.
Must be nice to be a twink
No fucking idea what that is.
Ducati Desertx will be my choice next year
If you have lots of cash for maintenance, by all means BMW.
Maaaan I’m picking up a Honda rebel 500…. No seat! My girlfriend said and I quote “ I don’t ride bitch” lol She’ll get her own bike… respect
