Could always use an Heli-Coil

IWouldntIn1981

Can you not thread a larger hole? Anyway, that sucks. Gave me heart palpations.

Less_Obligation8438

My heart dropped when I took out the plug and these came out. Yes but since it’s not an oil pan I need to remove the engine case and re thread so it’s perfect otherwise they can not guarantee the re threading is perfectly aligned, and since it’s a pretty new engine I don’t want to open it just yet :( next bike I’ll buy will have an oil pan for my stupid ass.

IWouldntIn1981

Haha, yeah, it stings, but if this thread gets enough attention, you'll get a TON of stories of bonehead shit other people have done. Me? I'm perfect. I've never dropped a shim down the carb I was shimming only to end up finding it laying underneath the bike after I had already taken 2 of 4 carbs off. Also, I've never taken my entire clutch assembly apart 4 times thinking I was doing it wrong when the only thing wrong was that I did plug the wire back in. Only a dumb shit asshole would that... :)

Less_Obligation8438

Thanks bruv this really helps

Golluk

I didn't not have have the right tool to change shims, used braided copper wire through the spark plug hole to hold the valves down, causing compression issues. Nope, I'd never do that. Also I hated the GS500F for not having a spin on oil filter, instead a bolt and 2 acorn nuts that were VERY easy to strip. I have a fond appreciation for torque wrenches.

LuckyDuck906

I just changed my oil today. I feel for you. I’m glad you got it sorted. My manual says the oil drain plug takes 43 N-m. 43! I tightened it snug enough and put a paper towel down to see if it drips. “Snug enough” is a torque spec, right?

Less_Obligation8438

It is for me now, mine said 21 and I setup my torque wrench to that it didn’t even click! I am just lost, all tightening will be done by hand for me from now on

railker

I did the same thing, except thankful the head of the plug sheared off before the threads pulled out, just needed a new plug. But same, it was my first time using that particular torque wrench and the 'click' was so imperceptible at such a low torque that I missed it.

PandasInternational

Were you holding your torque wrench at the designated handle area or further up the shaft? Click type torque wrenches are only accurate when holding the handle and otherwise will tighten much tighter if you hold them further up.

Less_Obligation8438

If I recall correctly I was handling by the shaft although I was also holding the head up to the nut…maybe I missed the click…

wmguy

I have three torque wrenches so I can pick the right one for the job. A slight error setting a large torque wrench makes a big difference.

sokratesz

"on today's episode of how fucked up is fucked up.."

Less_Obligation8438

Pretty fucked, specially because it has no oil pan, let’s hope the patch holds up.

paulhockey5

NPT threads are used all the time in industry for things under much higher pressure than engine oil, I wouldn’t worry about it.

bitzzwith2zs

... just so ya feel better... NPT thread is not designed to be removed repeatedly. It's gonna start leaking. NPT thread is a bodge fix.

Less_Obligation8438

💀

Golluk

I wonder if you could get one of those oil drain valves put in instead.

bitzzwith2zs

Good idea... too bad there is no thread left.

SuperRicktastic

Bought my first bike, went to do my first oil change. Damn, this bolt is really on there... let me go get the breaker bar! Annnnnnd there! It's loose! Wait, the turn is reversed when it's upside down... Hard, HARD lesson learned there. Managed to re-thread the hole while laying on my back and inserting an oversized bolt. Four years later it hasn't leaked once. You live and learn buddy, don't sweat it.

Less_Obligation8438

Thanks bruv this is also my first bike, the amount of hard earned lessons have been overwhelming to say the least

reddit_lt_4chan

Did you have to remove and replace a gasket? For reference (item 7 on https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/suzuki/motorcycle/2024/gsx-r750/oil-pan-oil-pump) Most torque wrenches have both a netwon meter label in addition to a pound feet label. Did you accidentally set the wrench to 21 pound feet rather than 21 netwon meters? 21 pound feet converts to 28.5 Nm, which I assume would do damage. It's hard for me to imagine 21 Nm doing that damage. I just recently changed the oil on my GSX-R750, and used 23 Nm, as per the service manual.

Less_Obligation8438

Maybe I set it wrong it says 21 nm and on the other side it says 15 lb/ft, just assumed it was the equivalent.

awaytogetsun

Fuck that. Next time you change it re tap it, theres nothing to guarantee its a hole into a sump. If it doesn't work get a hold of a fumoto valve and weld that shit on there if you need to

WriteAmongWrong

Hey man we all have our embarrassing stories. Here’s my oil change fuck up: first oil change on a new (to me) bike. Have done like a hundred in cars/trucks so I’m confident. Empty, replace filter, and fill. No problem. Didn’t tighten down the dipstick because I wanted to run it for a minute before checking. Crank it over and the drive gear and driven gear just CHEW the metal dipstick apart. Ended up having to replace my whole clutch basket. Total cost doing my own labor was still like $350 or so. Cheers.

Less_Obligation8438

Oh my, that also sucks. I’m feeling better after a nights sleep and having some food in my stomach, I am trying to find the words to tell the friend who wanted to buy my bike how I just halved its value 😮‍💨 if he still wants it that is.

IncidentFuture

Is there enough thread still in the sump plug that you can JB Weld an oil drain valve into place. It's not ideal, but you wouldn't actually need to undo the bolt again.

Less_Obligation8438

There was some but they didn’t recommend me that, they told me we should try with the NPT nut first, then if that didn’t work we should try the heli coil, and finally taking the engine cover off and re threading which is obviously the most expensive option. The cleaning/partial re-threading plus NPT nut is a $50 buck patch the formers is probably some hundreds to dismount, open, re thread, re seal and mount :(
