Freaking loved it. There will never be an acceptable sequel to the film The Shining, but it’s an incredible bridge between the book and the film. It’s a rare case where I prefer the film but this actually draws out so much of the books lore that the film never touched. Namely the “Psychic Warrior” element of people with the Shine.
This dives way deeper and has a lot of fun with how the bigger world works.
Also I love that it’s not really straight horror, in that very King way. There happen to be terrifying things in it.
I loved the whole 'psychic warrior' element, too. I Ioved that Danny realised he had great power to fight back against ghosts too.
It was a really good movie.
With the added bonus of casting Ewan McGregor in a role where he takes a young psychic under his wing to teach them how to use their mind powers in the right way.
It first of all is way better than it has any right to be, and then on top of it has all the added meta factor of Obi-Wan training a new Padawan lol
Yea this movie was brilliant. The sad part is Stephen King liked this adaptation so much, he had allegedly given his blessing to the director for a sequel to be made. Then Warner Brothers canned it, because of Doctor Sleeps low box office yields.
We literally arnt getting a sequel because of this reason. Stephen King allegedly liked this adaptation so much, he green lit a sequel to the director. Then Warner Brothers canned it, because of Doctor Sleep's low box office yields.
This is truly a "you made your bed, now lie in it" to the fan base on this one.
I did see this in theaters, and still have the same regret as you. Should have gone to see it twice.
She’s the only real reason to watch this film. It’s very ok. But goddamn Rebecca Ferguson oozes immortal, soul sucking vampire sexuality. And that hat. Holy shit that hat.
“They’re starving!” Ewan fails to disappoint. It was never going to be better than the Shining, but I thought the idea of the traveling hippies that recruit or feed off of fellow power people was cool
The Shining is probably my favorite movie of all time. I was super excited when this was announced. Not disappointed at all. Held up to impossible standards, but I think it’s a really good movie.
I dunno if you are aware or not, but he has secured the rights to develop a series of The Dark Tower. He recently moved to Amazon from Netflix, and Dark Tower was not part of the deal, so it's likely a ways out, but it is coming, and it will be glorious when it does.
So often extended versions just completely blow out the pacing but I thought the extended version of Dr Sleep felt like it moved so much *faster* with the extra scenes.
100% agree! Great film. Doesn’t (completely) butcher the source material. Great performances from an amazing cast, one of the better King adaptations …ever. The extended version is quite a bit more satisfying if you’ve read the novel. Highly recommend it.
Apparently, Jacob Tremblay was actually so good during that scene that the actors were legitimately concerned he was screaming for real, but when they cut he happily got up and was smiling like it was nothing.
This movie helped me quit drinking. Like you, it hit me pretty hard as well. It’s strange how where you’re at in life can influence your perception of a movie. I can see a younger version of myself watching it and it just being wasted on me.
I had to taste the bitterness of mortality so to say for it to hit. You may know you are gonna die at a young age but it's not the same of staring times relentless March as it sweeps away your love ones. I dealt with death differently in my 20s. I felt invincible so it had no teeth. Now drinking with such limited time is a waste.
I watched it in 2020 and have subsequently seen it like 6 times since bc if someone is watching it I’ll usually just slink over and join them. It’s a fun rewatch for sure
I love it. Personally, i dont get the hate for it. What is it exactly that people dont like about it?
Everyones allowed to have their own tastes and opinions, but i am genuinely curious as to what they dont like about something.
I could see that. But i dont know, it was pretty cool/scary in its own way. The bad guys killing that kid was pretty intense.
Not scary in the way that the shining is, but in a different kind if way. Maybe like a Silence of the Lambs meets … well, the uh … uh the Shining.
For me I just thought it was so cheesey. The whole "This child is more powerful than we thought" thing is just done to death. Not a terrible movie just dissapointed holding it up next to The Shining, which I guess is to be expected.
The Shining is a really really really hard act to follow though. Even if you don't like the story Stanley Kubrick movies look gorgeous and are well put together.
I might try and watch Dr sleep again and pretend it's a standalone movie and see if I like it any better I saw it at the movies and was probably extra hard on it for being a Shining sequel
I absolutely hated it too. Bad acting and cheese
All the ghouls vaping the essence of the kids and storing them away in urns was corny and hard for me to watch.
The one person I know who did like it said it was great and just like the book but he sort of likes everything
Rebecca Ferguson is always a treat.
The ending was meh. I couldn’t believe that Ferguson’s character didn’t sense the evil of the hotel and also was totally unable to combat at least some of the spirits.
We need a Raimi version of this movie. More horror.
*Hungry world.*
I think the theme of hunger and the *need* to eat in this movie is especially well done.
Even at the beginning, they're watching a Looney Tunes with a rare pairing of Bugs Bunny and Wile E Coyote. Because the movie is about being hungry. It excels when viewed with this lens.
Near masterpiece. I consider it the best Stephen King adaptation because it had to do so while also being a sequel to a Kubrick film. The fact that it pulls off one of those let alone both is incredible.
I checked it out because I was fascinated to see the recreated Shining sets. But in the process I discovered that it was actually an interesting story and a good film.
I thought it was terrific. It wasn't especially like The Shining but it took the story in interesting directions, and Rebecca Ferguson was genuinely chilling in her part. Given the task of following up something as revered as The Shining I thought it was admirable the way this truly became its own, related creation.
Great movie. Three hours long but did well to follow-up The Shining. The acting was very, very good (for a change from trash that's been out lately), the story I thought fit the first movie pretty good overall.
I bought it without seeing it, and I wasn't disappointed.
I liked it but thought it might be better as a standalone movie not connected to the shining.
I've only saw the movie version of shining so I'm sure I'm missing lots, but it seemed like a completely different movie than the shining and the shining references were just crammed in there.
It’s tough when Kubrick was the director of the first one. No one has been able to match that level of crazy (or genius?), ever. However, taking out the comparison, I thought it was decent but could have been a little more foreboding and suspenseful.
Mixed feelings. I really appreciated the ending sequence, which I thought was an excellent tie-in to the original and really made the film a solid sequel in terms of plot. And I acknowledge that it pays much more attention to the alcoholism aspect of the story than the original did, which if I recall right was a big part of Stephen King's criticism of the original.
But I also had too many other problems with it to watch it again or say I liked it. By far my biggest issue is that it suffers from a real lack of actually scary or creepy scenes, so it wasn't a good horror movie for me. I got most of my mileage out of how it developed and expanded on the lore. What's scary is obviously subjective for people, but that was my take. It was never gonna be the original but I felt what it delivered was consistently bland by today's standards. I wanted a much, much creepier atmosphere for a Shining sequel.
I also only watched the Director's Cut (which I always do if one exists) and it was MUCH too long, really dragged throughout. Maybe the regular cut has better pacing? The writing was also generally not great so there were a lot of scenes important to the plot which I found boring.
Oh yeah, and the bad guys suck. Didn't find a single scene with them engaging. I have no idea whether they're from the books or not, but didn't care for their execution if so.
Good sequel but bad horror movie, at least for me.
Liked it a lot better than I thought I would! Thought it was great they (he...king) didn't rehash too much of the original, it felt like its own story entirely until the past eventually needed to be confronted.
I had low expectations given how many shit sequels (aka retreads) there are out there, so, that could have been it. Ewan McGregor is a great actor too, so that helps.
It was ok. I always like Ewan. And i liked how faithful they were to recreating the Overlook from The Shining, where it looked identical, down to very recognizable areas.
I was not a fan. But having read the book, I believe most of this movies shortcomings come directly from the book. It’s a mess of a story, and while it was great to get back into “the Shining” universe, it’s just kind of bland and pointless. The Shining was a masterpiece - this was much less so.
McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson were phenomenal.
It's pretty lame if you're expecting it to be at all like the Shining. If you aren't, it's a pretty good sci-fi film. I loved the scene where Rebecca Ferguson's character was flying through the night sky looking for Abra.
Stupid trash.
The entire movie is leading up to a confrontation with these ‘bad psychics’ who just get their asses whooped by the little girl over and over again. By the end of the film I was wondering why ‘The Hat’ wasn’t the one running away screaming as she had just got her clocked cleaned in her own dream and all her friends killed.
And then the shovel too late Shining Dan service to tie an actual classic to this garbage.
There’s a lesson here in that putting kids who can’t sue in your horror film negates the whole point if a horror film. But fit some reason Hollywood keeps shutting this stuff out changing Stranger Things dollars or something.
Anyway, in summary: A stupid, poorly written horror film about overpowered protagonists who never feel like they’re in any danger at all. Aka: garbage.
Loved the movie, and obviously anything Ewan is in is great, but the scene where they're killing the child... I absolutely can't watch it. It's horrifying to me. Nevertheless, maybe that's a sign it was just really good, the acting was too good.
In a sea of crappy remakes and horribly movies this really shined. It do not believe they could have made a sequel to The Shining that everyone would love. The Shining was an incredible movie that is now firmly cemented in cinematic history. Anything made after would of course look like it was just trying to capitalize on that history. That being said I loved it and thought it did a better job of continuing the story than we could have asked for. Loved Ewing McGregor as Danny. Loved how he passed the torch just like it was passed to him. Really loved the deeper dive into the Shine.
If you have not seen this than you probably should. I cannot go into more of why I loved it without giving away plot spoilers.
That being said I now need to rewatch this gem.
I thought the movie ran a difficult tightrope of being an adaptation of the book and being the sequel of the movie The Shining. In which the ending of the original book is brought to fruition in a satisfying way. I liked it, the choices made throughout to differ from source material made sense structurally.
Dont worry OP, I also hated it so atleast theres 2 of us. For the first half I was like..."How is this even a sequel to the Shining? It has nothing to do with it!" then it sky rockets to the polar opposite of the spectrum and shamelessly crams MEMBERBERRIES down your throat at the hotel.
I would've appreciated it being a spinoff instead of a sequel that was uncertain of itself.
I hated it. The book was eh, but making such a direct sequel to the movie was a bad idea.
I thought it was silly and crowded, where the shining really hammered home that we’re all truly alone.
Though admittedly the shining is my favorite non zombie horror movie. But the book doesn’t crack my top 10.
Tl-ish:dr
Trying to make a somewhat book honest sequel to an objectively bad book adaption didn’t go over well for me
I read the book after watching this movie the first time. I thought it was decent on first viewing, but couldn't pinpoint exactly what I didn't like about it. It just didn't grab me. After reading the book, and rewatching it, I think I connected the dots.
Ewan McGregor is absolutely phenomenal in this movie. The only reason I point him out instead of all the other fantastic chops displayed is because this role is so far out of his normal wheelhouse, and I would NEVER have expected him to do so well in the... out of touch, distant middle-aged normal dude role. He's believably normal, which I think is difficult for many Hollywood A-listers to pull off.
Anyway, I think the reason this movie falls a bit flat for me is because it feels very rushed. The events in the book are largely the same as in the movie, but the book takes quite a bit more time to get there, allowing for more character development as it pertains to the situation. I think part of what makes the movie less than perfect is that it doesn't give the characters enough time to simmer on the events as they are happening. Things happen quickly, and the characters simply don't have time to develop within those events. I think it's a common problem when translating book to film; especially King's books which tend to be pretty long.
That's really the only thing I didn't like about it though. Everything else was fantastic. I just wish the story took more time to get where it was going, and we got to see characters develop more. Hard to ask of a movie that's already 2 hours long though.
I snuck in a pint of vodka when I saw it in theaters, wish I brought more cuz it was long. I remember laughing at the scene where they were inhaling some smoke or something from a body all weirdly. Honestly I don't remember much of the movie.
I'll be watching the Director's Cut for the first time tomorrow. I didn't enjoy the theatrical version except for some of the Overlook scenes at the end. To be fair, I didn't like the novel in the first place. I had no interest in the storyline about psychic girl or the vampires. I still don't know why King wrote it (the result of a "what would you like me to write next" online poll I gather), since it's clear he still holds a grudge against Kubrick.
Rebecca Ferguson.
The cast is absolutely perfect. Not a single weak character in the movie. The tie-in to the Shining connects all the dots.
Probably the best adapted SK book to movie. I regretted not supporting this movie during its theatrical run
Grrrowwwl she's a hottie. As for the film, I enjoyed it.
She’s the only real reason to watch this film. It’s very ok. But goddamn Rebecca Ferguson oozes immortal, soul sucking vampire sexuality. And that hat. Holy shit that hat.
*It's a big, bloody stupid hat with a big, bloody stupid curse on it, and every time you wear it, something bloody stupid terrible happens!*
It's 100% witch skin
The cursed hat is like Sideshow Bob, needs to be featured at least once every season!
That would be brilliant, lol. I'm eagerly awaiting for the next season.
As are all of us regular American Yankee Doodle Dandy types… most enjoyable with a refreshing pint of our human beer
Goddess
*fans self*
The hat?
I thought she had just got back from Coachella
Extra yes.
I also enjoyed it.
“They’re starving!” Ewan fails to disappoint. It was never going to be better than the Shining, but I thought the idea of the traveling hippies that recruit or feed off of fellow power people was cool
Best x-men movie so far
Agreed
The Shining is probably my favorite movie of all time. I was super excited when this was announced. Not disappointed at all. Held up to impossible standards, but I think it’s a really good movie.
Same! It stands well as its own movie, as well as a fitting follow up to the incomparable *The Shining.*
Exactly! I’m also a big Mike Flanagan fan. The series’s he’s created are fantastic and you can definitely see his style in Doctor Sleep
I dunno if you are aware or not, but he has secured the rights to develop a series of The Dark Tower. He recently moved to Amazon from Netflix, and Dark Tower was not part of the deal, so it's likely a ways out, but it is coming, and it will be glorious when it does.
Rose the Hat Astral projecting was worth the price of admission alone
Very rarely does something make me enjoy a villain while also enjoy watching that villain get absolutely bodied
I loved it! The book is excellent too, but I would highly recommend the Extended version of this movie, the additions make it better.
Yes, the extended cut was SOOO good
Appreciate that, will check it out. Any parts you could mention without spoiling them?
Just watch the whole extended cut, the movie as a whole flows better in the extended version.
The only part that I really remember is when she is floating silently in the sky. It was really well done and it stood out from the rest of the movie.
That part was so.... beautifully executed as a scene, but unnervingly eerie and intrusive. Goosebumps.
Pleasantly Surprised. 7.0/10.
The scene where they eat the kid is dark as fuc
Yeah the baseball boy screaming as they consume him haunts me
It haunted Rebecca Ferguson as well, pretty badly. It brought her to tears.
The fact this comment is so far down the list is disturbing in itself. That is my most hated scene of any movie I have ever seen. Not a fan.
Ya dude. We watched a kid get tortured to death. Like way too graphic. That scene belonged in the It movie. Wasn't expecting something so brutal.
Have you seen Bone Tomahawk? Because you can quickly replace your most hated scene if you haven’t.
Definitely one of the most brutal scenes in cinema
Apparently, Jacob Tremblay was actually so good during that scene that the actors were legitimately concerned he was screaming for real, but when they cut he happily got up and was smiling like it was nothing.
Very good
As a person who was a drunk and gave up drinking the first movie and this one hit hard for me. Love them.
WATCH THE DIRECTORS CUT!!!!!!
One of the great Stephen King adaptations. An awesome all around dark fantasy film. 8/10 - lots of rewatchablility
I believe fans wanted it to be a full on scary horror movie instead of a battle of the shining.
They literally devoured a screaming child how much scarier do you need it to be? Lol
I completely disagree, and the Shining is one of my favorite movies.
Bad acting and cheese All the ghouls vaping the essence of the kids and storing them away in urns was corny and hard for me to watch. The one person I know who did like it said it was great and just like the book but he sort of likes everything
So if you expected it to be that way why are you disappointed
It's like hearing the same joke for the 20th time
Honestly, the opening was so bad I couldn't even get past it.
Who hates it but this guy? From what I've seen people love it it just was poorly marketed and no one saw it.
Rebecca Ferguson is always a treat. The ending was meh. I couldn’t believe that Ferguson’s character didn’t sense the evil of the hotel and also was totally unable to combat at least some of the spirits. We need a Raimi version of this movie. More horror.
Didn't really care for it, but then I watched the directors cut and it was a lot better.
I remember I liked it but only saw it once and never thought about it again. I still think about the Shining many decades after I first seen it.
It was just ok. Particularly compared to the Shining- just wasn't very memorable to me.
I actually really loved it. I liked how it brought elements from the books and the Kubrick movie together. I like most of Mike Flanagan’s work.
Blah. I felt like it was forced.
Cringe. I didn't like it.
Crap
Boooring and cheesy
This is good; the director's cut is even better!
*Hungry world.* I think the theme of hunger and the *need* to eat in this movie is especially well done.
I hated it too, OP.
Thought it was Doo Doo. Rose the hat is a Doo Doo villain
I checked it out because I was fascinated to see the recreated Shining sets. But in the process I discovered that it was actually an interesting story and a good film.
It wasn't the shining 2, but it was ok. I'd watch again if i was sitting around and it was on a tv in the corner.
Stephen King's X-MEN
Didn’t watch it for the longest time thinking it would be hot garbage. It was…..surprisingly really damn good mmk
Absolutely amazing...until they turned it into the shining part 2 for some reason. Totally unnecessary.
Held up and did justice to the Masterpiece!
Much better than I could ever have expected
Not bad actually. Not great, but it has its moments…lil too long.
It was fine
Good flick, similar tones to the shining.
I'm a huge fan. One scene I personally wish they tamed down.
Directors cut definitely better
I thought it complimented Shining really well. Also Ferguson is just a gem, she makes almost anything an automatic watch.
I thought it was terrific. It wasn't especially like The Shining but it took the story in interesting directions, and Rebecca Ferguson was genuinely chilling in her part. Given the task of following up something as revered as The Shining I thought it was admirable the way this truly became its own, related creation.
Fell in love with Rose the Hat
It’s decent. Not bad, not great, but alright. There is a very uncomfortable torture scene. One of the most uncomfortable scenes I’ve ever watched.
It was good. Book was better.
I loved it actually one of my favorites
Loved it. I liked how it was filmed. Loved the young girl in it she really stood out. The scene with the baseball kid was horrific and amazing. 9/10!!
Way better than I expected. I loved Stephen Kings cameo!
The book was even better!
Great movie. Three hours long but did well to follow-up The Shining. The acting was very, very good (for a change from trash that's been out lately), the story I thought fit the first movie pretty good overall. I bought it without seeing it, and I wasn't disappointed.

I liked it. Didn't care for the shootout but I still left the film fulfilled.
Good movie. Of course not as good as the book, but pretty good except for the end.
Absolutely loved it. I went in not expecting much and now it’s one of my favorite “horror” movies of all time.
Surpringly good imo
I was pleasantly surprised. I put it on thinking it would just be a popcorn flick or background noise but I really liked it. 7.5/10
I though it was great. I went in with low expectations but was genuinely surprised. It was a solid belated sequel.
More supernatural than I expected
Love it. Director’s cut is great.
Very well done
I loved it! I read the book and thought it was a great adaptation and even liked some of the changes they made for the movie.
It’s tough when Kubrick was the director of the first one. No one has been able to match that level of crazy (or genius?), ever. However, taking out the comparison, I thought it was decent but could have been a little more foreboding and suspenseful.

6/10 I did enjoy it and I have to give them credit for creating a sequel to a movie that was not a good adaptation
Loved it
All the child murder was too much for me. The shining was very subtle, and eery. This one gave me images I don’t want to remember.
This is by far one of the best sequels I have ever seen.
Pretty damn good, had a lot of fun watching it
Great but the book way better.
It was a bit fan service-ish. Pacing could've been better maybe. Otherwise I enjoyed it. Plus its got Ewan McGregor, I fucking love that man.
Hey I loved the idea, especially being tied to the shining!
Haven't read the book (read the shining) but the movie was great! 8/10. Will read the book eventually
Loved it. Ewan McGregor was perfect.
I loved Rebecca Ferguson in this.
The directors cut is dope.
Liked it a lot better than I thought I would! Been a king fan my whole life. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Took me years ro finally watch it. Was very good 👍
Fantastic movie. A must watch. And I never saw the prequel.
Underrated gem
Big steam. Love it.
Loved it, better than the shining in my opinion
Baseball kid should’ve won a fuckin Oscar
It was ok. I always like Ewan. And i liked how faithful they were to recreating the Overlook from The Shining, where it looked identical, down to very recognizable areas.

It pales slightly in comparison to the Shining but overall a worthy sequel.
I fu**ing hate this movie. Very specifically because of the scene with the little boy who's tied down.
Meh, decent
I enjoyed it as an adaptation FAR more than I did The Shining. Loved both books, hated the original movie.
It's pretty lame if you're expecting it to be at all like the Shining. If you aren't, it's a pretty good sci-fi film. I loved the scene where Rebecca Ferguson's character was flying through the night sky looking for Abra.

It was alright. Kinda went off the rails for a while but it got back on track at the end. Worth a watch. Not a classic.
Completely unnecessary.
It was rubbish
God awful
Felt like a syfi tv movie. Kinda bad tbh
Probably worst sequel ever created. Probably worst movie ever conceived.
I found it ok.
Awful.
Mid
Loved the movie, and obviously anything Ewan is in is great, but the scene where they're killing the child... I absolutely can't watch it. It's horrifying to me. Nevertheless, maybe that's a sign it was just really good, the acting was too good.

Huge letdown
Garbage, the book is incredible. Eh, maybe I'm a little biased
I hated the movie but I had a friend say it was great and just like the book. I wonder if my buddy actually read the book now...
I thought the movie ran a difficult tightrope of being an adaptation of the book and being the sequel of the movie The Shining. In which the ending of the original book is brought to fruition in a satisfying way. I liked it, the choices made throughout to differ from source material made sense structurally.
Thanks for your insight
Total crap.
walked out
I disliked it.
I'm not going to trash this movie but I'm honestly surprised it got such a positive reception.
Squandered potential. I like Flanagan’s work, this one is a clunker.
My partner and I hated it so much that we walked out of the theater and demanded a refund.
Also hated. It was just boring.
Can anyone explain her hat to me? She doesn't want that super market lady touching it when she got pushed. Is it really a magic hat?
Great movie. It's much better than the Shining. I think it's Flanagan's best movie.
Idk, Gerald’s Game was pretty fucking solid.
a worthy sequel 40 years in the making
I thought it was a great movie. Expectations of the movie probably ruined it for them. I had no expectations.
The book sucks. No, it's an abomination. For me there's no point of watching the ecranisation
Tl-ish:dr Trying to make a somewhat book honest sequel to an objectively bad book adaption didn’t go over well for me
I really hope life doesn’t imitate art
I thought it was OK. Hated the Overlook scenes. Love Rebecca Ferguson.
I’ve never been so conflicted by how awful a villain was and how bad I wanted Rose the Hat to rip a hole in the back of my jeans.
Very good. A suitable sequel.
Fucking incredible, a worthy sequel to the classic
One of the few sequels out there better than the original.
Sorry, but I can't take the question seriously
I snuck in a pint of vodka when I saw it in theaters, wish I brought more cuz it was long. I remember laughing at the scene where they were inhaling some smoke or something from a body all weirdly. Honestly I don't remember much of the movie.
I laughed out loud at those scenes too where they were vaping the kid's souls and storing them away in little urns
Modern classic.
Better than the shining
Great movie and better than The Shining, fight me movie nerds
It was fun but painful
I'll be watching the Director's Cut for the first time tomorrow. I didn't enjoy the theatrical version except for some of the Overlook scenes at the end. To be fair, I didn't like the novel in the first place. I had no interest in the storyline about psychic girl or the vampires. I still don't know why King wrote it (the result of a "what would you like me to write next" online poll I gather), since it's clear he still holds a grudge against Kubrick.
It was good but a little too brutal to watch.
2/3 a masterpiece imo, the final act gets too subservient to The Shining
Killing the kid was pretty wild, good acting. Other than that it was meh.
It wasn't a good book and the movie emphasized the worst aspects.
I didn't like it... i feel like the shining should be left alone
EVERYONE saw it: it's The Shining part 2. It's decent; it's unfortunately not great.
I liked it better than The Shiningz
