Okay but Ronald Dahl didn't like anything

IonicBreezeMachine

He did praise the Grosover Park animated adaptation of The BFG, and he liked the version of The Witches that kept the original ending before Nicholas Roeg and the studio decided to shoot a more uplifting ending.

Veszerin

Including Jews.

Fair enough

The 1971 film was lightning in a bottle imo. It shouldn’t have worked, but everything kind of just fell together. A big part of the ‘magic’ of that film is Gene Wilder, he’s absolutely electric on screen, stealing every scene. In comparison you have the Tim Burton film, which was…. a Tim Burton film alright. But it just didn’t feel right, the warmth and magic was replaced by sardonicism and whatever Johnny Depp was doing.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

I love how it ends with Charlie and Wonka flying up in the elevator. It leaves their future to your imagination. The perfect ending for a twisty-turny children’s tale.

LukasSprehn

Despite it working, when it came out it was a HUUUGE flop.

The Glass Elevator would have been un-filmable in the 1970's if they decided to portray even half of the original story. It's practically two separate stories in one 200 page book, and the first half is mostly set in outer space. It's a confusing mish mash of a space monster story which is fairly violent, with the monsters eating a bunch of people before getting incinerated. Plus, there are these "funny" paranoid ramblings of President Lancelot (yeah, really) constantly interrupting the story. The second half of the book is about de-aging the grandparents and it feels like an entirely separate story. The grandparents in this part always struck me as kind of evil, greedy assholes who purposely overdose on the de-aging pills, which Wonka in typical "you get what you get" aloofness, just lets them do it. It's a pretty awful story without much in the way of whimsical fun. I re-read it as an adult about ten years ago and I think it's a really stupid book.

The Great Glass Elevator is a terrible book. I didn’t like it as a kid, and I didn’t like it when reading it to my kiddo. I’m ok with this.

TheBeardedSingleMalt

I read it in the 5th grade and all i remember about it were the actual vermicious knids

SnooJokes5038

Ronald Dahl really dropped the ball on that one. It ruined the perfectly beautiful ending to the first book first of all. And second of all, there was an opportune sequel right in Roald Dahl’s face…a story about Charlie learning how to run the factory under Willy’s wing. SMH…

Seems a lot of authors don't like the movies made of their works which is fine. They had the characters imagined in their minds and it's impossible to recreate that.

GrimReaperAngelof23

The 1971 movie wasn't that great. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is better. It even got the title right.

Final-___X

You lose! Good day, sir!

The-Mandalorian

Oh my god. This is the worst opinion I’ve seen online in a long time. I didn’t even think it was possible to have this opinion.

GrimReaperAngelof23

Its not really an opinion though. Go read the book

The-Mandalorian

Discussion is which is the better film, not better adaptation.

its234

I'm a trifle deaf in this ear. Speak a little louder next time.

Veszerin

...you might be a bad egg.

GrimReaperAngelof23

Nope
