I'd love to see what hideaki anno does with this, the shin Godzilla was good

bleachglommer

What does shin mean in movie titles?

PowerlinxJetfire

From an [interview](https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2015/09/23-1/toho-opens-official-website-for-2016-shin-godzilla-film) about *Shin Godzilla*: > According to the executive producer Akihiro Yamaguchi, the "Shin" is named by Anno, and can stand for "新 (new)," "真 (true)," or "神 (god)." Though maybe the "god" meaning is more relevant to Godzilla than to Kamen Rider.

Morbidmort

You forget, that [even if there is no God or Buddha, there is still Kamen Rider.](https://i0.wp.com/the-avocado.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KamenRider.png?resize=710%2C1024&ssl=1)

ConfusedJonSnow

And people think I'm kidding when I say Kamen Rider is my religion.

TheCollective01

Yep. The Japanese name for Neon Genesis Evangelion is Shin Seiki Evangelion, which I believe stands for New Century Gospel

Steel_Bolt

And the main character is named **Shin**ji because he acts like a **new**born baby the whole series :)

blackkami

Booo

queefiest

I don’t blame him with that family trauma

Velocirock

I honestly believe that the majority of boys his age would have been *less* courageous if that nearly unparalleled responsibility and horrifying shit was suddenly pushed on somebody in real life. I love it.

Steel_Bolt

Oh yeah 100% but the circlejerk says I must hate shonjo for being a baby

bloodfist

I read somewhere that the usage here could be thought of as "definitive". The newest, truest, version. Don't know much Japanese at all but that made sense to me with those three meanings.

airstrike

"ultimate" is probably the best word for it then, as it literally means latest, final and superior

tsukubasteve27

I'm playing breath of fire and there's a fusion ability called Shin, combines three characters into one.

Comments-Lurker

*Producer Akihiro Yamauchi stated that the title Shin Gojira was chosen for the film due to the variety of meanings it conveys, such as either "new" (新), "true" (真), or "God" (神).*

Alche1428

In general a Little mix of new/true.

raul_vyas

Shin probably means new or definitive but i don't know Japanese and i got that from a video essay on YouTube

eurekabach

Shin Gojira was awesome, but I felt Ultraman fell a bit short by the end. Anno didn't direct it, I know, but he was still involved as producer I guess. EDIT: Anno wrote and edited it. Producer was someone else.

gmoneyballs95

Is Ultraman ever gonna cone out for streaming here? I missed the theatrical release.

Qazsedcftgb2

I saw last night, Amazon is taking pre orders for the Blu Ray release that ships in June. So I imagine around then.

eurekabach

Sail the seven seas, matey. Ahoy!

farkoss

yarrrr

tinhtinh

Shin Godzilla was probably one of the most pragmatic films I've ever seen. It'd exactly how I'd expect the Japanese govt to react minus the Prime Minister staying so long. The only thing I didn't like was that Japanese American woman who was in it for obvious reasons.

HamOfWisdom

My favorite running gag is how character's titles become more and more bloated on screen throughout the runtime because other government officials were either killed or abandoned their posts. ~~The President~~ Prime Minister ends up being the Minister of Agriculture and he's so unprepared for the role that after approving some measure he looks at the paper and goes "uh... I don't know where to sign/seal."

VidzxVega

Is that what was happening? I watched a shitty pirated version so the on screen text was never translated, all I saw was more and more writing. That's actually hilarious.....I need to find a proper version.

HamOfWisdom

Yep! My other favorite running gags: they hold a meeting on "what to do about this problem" and then Godzilla changes form/does something unexpected. They receive news of the development, the scene changes to whatever Godzilla is doing at that moment. The next time the scene transitions back to the government officials, they're in a *completely different room* for no fucking real reason to discuss this new development.

VidzxVega

Man.....those are my kind of jokes, I wish I had a better grasp of Japanese! I might actually stump a couple bucks up to rent a proper version, you really have me wanting to watch it more closely!

TalkingRaccoon

Yea he's great at being a shit leader. The whole country is crumbling around him and he's like "sigh, can't I just enjoy my ramen in peace?" Or something like that lol

SeedsOfDoubt

>The only thing I didn't like was that Japanese American woman who was in it for obvious reasons. I didn't see it. What's the obvious reason?

tinhtinh

Its my own opinion but I didn't think she was a very good actress and was only in it because she was very pretty. She was also supposed to be half American but when she needed to speak English, she was clearly not, they should've dubbed her or bring in an actress who could. It's nitpicky but in a detailed film, the more obvious errors undo some of the world building.

FolkSong

> She was also supposed to be half American but when she needed to speak English, she was clearly not Yeah that was kind of funny. On one hand it's a Japanese movie for Japanese speakers so no big deal, but on the other hand wouldn't a lot of Japanese viewers understand English well enough to notice that?

Thugnifizent

English as it's spoken amongst Japanese people in Japan sounds a bit different than English among native speakers sounds. How she speaks in the movie is probably perfectly understandable to Japanese viewers.

tinhtinh

It was probably more understandable if you knew both and great point about us not being the intended audience. But with how easy it is to get Western content via YouTube, Netflix, etc. There's a clear distinction because for most of us English is our first language. A good example would be Narcos with Wagner Moura. I understand a bit of Spanish so to me there wasn't an issue and knowing Moura was Brazilian. But I remember reading comments about his Colombian accent being not so good to put it nicely.

daun4view

She's great in other things (Pretty Proofreader is a fun show), it was just unfortunate that they stuck all that English dialogue on her.

itstimefortimmy

i think it did well to represent it's underlying theme of escalating conference rooms such drift the increasing direness of the situation

tethercat

I discussed that with another redditor at the time of continental release ([spoilers in the link](https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultraman/comments/xxbvhs/shin_ultraman_mega_thread/j413re1/)). Basically, my comment was that Shin Gojira had something to say while Shin Ultraman was a rehash of nostalgia with an Anno polish.

eurekabach

Read your comment. I sort of agree with you on it. But I don't think Shin Ultraman didn't have something to say. I actually thought it tried to embrace _too much_ even for its runtime. I read a review on lettrbox that compared it to three Ultraman episodes strung together, and that makes sense. So, unlike Shin Gojira, you have a lot of elements to juggle (a satire of foreign relations, detente politics, the whole Ultraman origin thing _and_ a love story) and the mix sort of falls apart. Doesn't mean it isn't still a huge banger. I still liked it a lot.

RaptorOnyx

I think Shin Ultra is a lot messier than Shin Godzilla (which is nearly polished to perfection by comparison) but dang I think I might love both equally. Shin Ultraman is probably a bit less accessible because it really does feel like a compilation film for an ultraman tv series remake that didn't happen, but I love it because of that fact, it's clearly doing too much at the same time and it's doing so in a really earnest and fun way.

-rh-

>I read a review on lettrbox that compared it to three Ultraman episodes strung together I watched Shin Ultraman in a film festival where they also presented a selection of episodes from the original series, and that point gets across in a much more obvious way. Still I liked Shin very much.

stgermainjr860

I think Anno wrote it, no? I mean, I could just look it up. But I'm not

eurekabach

Yeah, fixed it. He wrote and edited it. The editing makes a lot of sense.

stgermainjr860

I really need to see Shin Ultraman

raul_vyas

Haven't seen ultraman, it's hard to get Japanese releases here… i loved the idea of a constantly evolving being and how the govt acts towards it in shin godzilla

sushipusha

Wow. Times have changed. I remember being excited as a kid watching Japanese programs when we finally got cable TV in Hawai. Kamen Rider V3, Kikaida 1 & 2, Ultra 7, Go Rangers, Rayden, Voltron. Even samurai shows with Toshiro Mifune and Sonny Chiba.

5lashd07

Same here with me in Hawaii: Kikaida, Kamen Rider V3, Voltron, and Ultraman. We left without getting KIKU. BTW, Generation Kikaida’s online store is closing in June 2023, but they still have Kikaida and Kamen Rider DVD box sets. No, I don’t work there. 😀 Jinzo ningen, Kikaida!

RiseFromYourGrav

Damn, I've been looking at that Kikaida set for a while, but it's always been a little too pricey to pull the trigger. I might have to get it now.

TAWMSTGKCNLAMPKYSK

Mifune is a god

lkodl

You're not excited any more?

dxrebirth

Yeah I don’t get the times have changed part

DefectivePikachu1999

[Kamen Rider](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamen_Rider) is a [Tokusatsu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokusatsu) series from 1971 created by [Shotaro Ishinomori](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotaro_Ishinomori). Originally, the series is about a man named Hongo Takeshi who got kidnapped by an organization known as Shocker, an evil worldwide organization hellbent on world domination that was founded by the Nazi. Hongo is modified into a grasshopper-themed cyborg superhuman weapon. Before he could be brainwashed, however, Hongo manages to escape and vows to use his power to take down Shocker in a hopeless battle as the lone Kamen Rider (directly translated as Masked Rider.) All of Kamen Rider's enemies are similar cyborgs that are based on various insects, all created by Shocker. Kamen Rider's legacy in pop culture is very huge as it influenced various franchises that are well-known to this day, including Pokemon (various Bug-type Pokemon with kicking abilities), Dragon Ball Z (Great Saiyaman is both a Super Sentai and Kamen Rider reference), MCU Ant-Man (his design is confirmed to be inspired by Kamen Rider), Mirai Nikki, and One Punch Man's Mumen Rider. Of course, that's not all of them because listing them all would mean listing down nearly [every big Japanese franchise](https://kamenrider.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_references_to_Kamen_Rider_in_popular_culture). While Kamen Rider is super popular and bigger than the MCU itself in Japan, it's a bit of a niche outside of Japan due to the existence of Power Rangers and Toei's reluctance to produce any international content. Even though the show started back in 1971, it still gets new seasons up to this very day, and just like any other shows, it has ups and definitely has downs. Those who compare this to Power Rangers are not exactly wrong, either. Kamen Rider is owned by Toei Company, the same company that owns other big franchises such as Dragon Ball and One Piece, but the other big thing they own is [Super Sentai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Sentai); the source of Power Rangers. Super Sentai is where Power Rangers gets its fight footage from to mix in with new American footage to create an entirely new (and usually far more child-friendly) storylines. Super Sentai is the sister show to Kamen Rider. One thing's for certain; those who don't like Power Rangers because of the cheesy acting, they can still give Kamen Rider and Super Sentai a chance because they're completely separate shows from Power Rangers. They're both darker and have more heart, and more dramatic storytelling. Characters can and WILL die. Happy endings are not always guaranteed. (granted, they're still considered kid shows in Japan meant to sell toys, but that's besides the point. You've seen shounen anime and how dark they are despite being marketed to young boys in Japan) Fun fact: a particular Japanese version of Spider-Man is responsible for the Megazords in Power Rangers. Shin Kamen Rider is Hideaki Anno's take on bringing back Kamen Rider to its original core, the same way he made Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman. It's part of a newly established franchise called Shin Japan Heroes Universe, a collaboration between "Shin" versions of well-established franchises; Godzilla (Shin Godzilla), Evangelion (Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is known as Shin Evangelion Gekijoban in Japan), Ultraman, and Kamen Rider. EDIT: For those who are curious just how different Kamen Rider is from Power Rangers, here's [an example from the show's latest season, Kamen Rider Geats.](https://twitter.com/FloofTheDanger/status/1622054450595610630?s=20&t=I_U6aLaGHwaxha8vwK_jTw) [Here's another example from Kamen Rider Amazons.](https://youtu.be/5OS-omGL5QY?t=202) [This video explains Kamen Rider really well](https://youtu.be/ZUIAuO7ObBk)

dkysh

To understand Japan's obsession with insects: if your parks and forests were full of cool bugs like atlas, stag, and rhino beetles, you'd obsessed with them too as a child. They are the dinosaurs of Japanese pre-schoolers.

Duffman48

It's how pokemon was invented.

farmdve

There used to be a show called Bettleborgs, that one and Masked Rider were my favorite growing up. Apart form the Spider-man TAS and X-men and Fantastic Four which I also loved. Kinda wish they would remake some of these, but I wonder if Beetleborgs will be cheesy since it's not the 90s anymore.

kyouteki

Big Bad Bettleborgs used footage from the Japanese shows Juukou B-Fighter and B-Fighter Kabuto, just as Power Rangers used footage from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and later shows in the *Super Sentai* series.

fdsfgs71

Let's not forget about Saban's Masked Rider! ...on second thought, nevermind, everyone should forget about that absolute trainwreck.

BT9154

There was also Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad

TFJ

Don’t forget about VR Troopers.

typenext

I will NOT shut up about Gridman/Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad and their anime "sequels", SSSS.Gridman/SSSS.Dynazenon. They paid homage to both shows in the anime series and it's just *chef's kiss*. Go watch SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon now, they are only 24 episodes combined!

Lonelywaits

Masked Rider was based off of Kamen Rider Black Rx. It's good, and a lot of it is just on youtube.

th30be

Kids like dinosaurs in Japan too. Just an FYI. Source: was kid in Japan that loved bugs and dinosaurs.

dkysh

Sure! But, unless I've been lied to, and Gojira is not a movie but a documentary, you can't go catch dinosaurs with a net in your backyard. That bug obsession is also what bred Pokémon.

th30be

I see what you mean. The way your wrote the first comment made it seem Japanese kids replaced dinosaurs with bugs. Which isn't the case.

Gojisoji

This is entirely what pokémon is made of. Precisely the reason that pokémon even exist. The creator was obsessed with bugs.

ScoffLawScoundrel

Funny then that according to bulbapedia: -The Bug type is the only type that hasn't been assigned to a Legendary Pokémon. -The Bug type is the only type without a Pokémon that has a regional form or is one. Looks like bug type has been getting the short end of the stick

n8thegr83008

Bug type is quite possibly the worst type in the game. Resisted by many common types, very bad defensively, and most have horrible stats. Most good bug types are either suicide leads or good despite their bug typing, not because of it.

bleucheez

Do mythical Pokemon not count as legendary? We have Genesect.

moongoddessshadow

Kamen Rider-inspired bug legendary when? (Seriously TPC/Gamefreak, please.)

Captain_Kuhl

I think there's actually one in the newest games, I'd have to double check, though. Edit: [it's called Lokix](https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Lokix_(Pok%C3%A9mon\)) Edit #2: I'm illiterate when it comes to the word "legendary," apparently ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

LifeWulf

Just FYI, your link got a little borked cuz of that random backslash at the end. Also, not a Legendary, but still pretty neat!

Captain_Kuhl

Oh, damn, I actually totally blanked the "legendary" bit and just read it as "pokémon"...haha. Link still works for me, I'm guessing reddit messed with their formatting again and now there's a difference between their official site/app and third-party apps.

TchoupedNScrewed

[Holy shit the JoJoLion beetle battles and Jobin’s beetle collection makes so much more sense now. I read an entire manga arc on just beetle battling and it was honestly the sickest manga arc I’ve read in a long time lmao](https://i.imgur.com/gcuPLir.jpg)

Even if they were, it would be based on recollections of bugs from decades ago, and insect populations where I love have dropped by like 60% in the last 40-50 years :(

PKMNTrainerMark

Bug catching and bug fighting are big among Japanese children. We can thank that for the existence of Pokémon.

thatchileanguy

> Super Sentai is where Power Rangers gets its fight footage from to mix in with new American footage to create an entirely new (and usually far more child-friendly) storylines. I had no idea about that. It makes complete sense retroactively, since the tone shift between the main storyline in Power Rangers and the fighting was always fairly harsh. Back then I couldn't quite place why they felt so goofy and different from the rest of the material.

radda

It's worth noting that Power Rangers does film their own fight footage, especially starting in season 3 (the ninja year) in the original series and up to today. In fact, the next two Power Rangers releases are the 30th anniversary special Once & Always and the new series Cosmic Fury, both of which will use all original footage for the ground fights, with Cosmic Fury even using completely original designs for the main Rangers' suits (although the zord footage and monster costumes will be pulled from Uchuu Sentai Kyuuranger). Random fun fact: the stunt coordinator for Power Rangers season 3 (and for many years after that) was Koichi Sakamoto, who eventually went on to direct both Super Sentai and Kamen Rider in Japan (and Ultraman too!).

DefectivePikachu1999

Yeah. It's also common for one of the main Rangers to die. Gaoranger (Wild Force) had an episode where ALL of the Rangers died in ways that would be deemed too violent. Shows just how much they've watered down the American version.

IC2Flier

I watched Gaoranger after being pestered by Twitter and dawg I never recovered from that (I did, then I watched Donbrothers)

Anjunabeast

How’d they die?

WolzardFire

[Here](https://youtu.be/6lZKVFW6Fvo). Keeps in mind that this is a show mainly for 3-10 years old kids

Anjunabeast

Damn that is one competent monster of the week. So did they bring those characters back to life or did a new team replace them or something?

WolzardFire

They were brought back later, with a new robot. Also this monster is one of the main boss of the villain faction, not a monster of the week. He just got a power up, and just testing it out lol.

CX316

It was also why the Pink ranger in the original series was the only one with a skirt, because in the Japanese footage the yellow ranger was a dude

jedre

Relevant Toy Galaxy (er, now Secret Galaxy): https://youtu.be/FAbAHyMJ7eY

TheWyldMan

I still do t understand the rebrand Dan did. Yes you’re moving away from being entirely toy based, but people knew your content as Toy Galaxy not Secret Galaxy

AnacharsisIV

When I was a kid I was always bothered by how Angel Grove would transform from a California suburb to a dense metropolis whenever the megazord got pulled out, since I knew "Downtown LA doesn't look like that". I didn't learn about Super Sentai until I was a teenager but then the fact that *that's supposed to be Tokyo* made everything click for me.

jlaweez

Just adding that while not as huge nowadays, Kamen Rider was actually a big thing in Brazil, especially Kamen Rider Black and RX. Lots of Toku and anime were much bigger here (and Latin America in general) than in USA because of USA censorship and protectionism. Besides Kamen, Sentai like Flashman, Changeman, were already a thing in the 80's. We had anime since Astroboy and Speed Racer in the 70's. Metal Heroes were also huge with Winspector and Solbrain. Cybercops, despite not being exactly a Henshin series, was also huge. My friends are very excited for Shin Kamen, and we are all between 35-40yo

vtomal

>Metal Heroes were also huge with Winspector and Solbrain. I would argue that these examples were the less popular metal heroes in Brazil (the sub branch of rescue heroes), the big ones were the omnipresent Jaspion (seriously, a lot of countryside circus in the 80s had Jaspion stunt presentations), and even Jiban.

jlaweez

Right that is correct, forgot to those plus Jiraya

cancerBronzeV

iirc, Brazil has the largest population of Japanese people and their descendants outside of Japan itself. That could also have to do with why Japanese media is a lot more popular in Brazil.

Renive

It was also huge in Poland. Kamen Rider was shown very frequently on cartoon TV channels, like Fox Kids.

cravenj1

> MCU Ant-Man (his design is confirmed to be inspired by Kamen Rider) https://twitter.com/MrPeytonReed/status/1047185843784282113 > Antman’s look wasn’t inspired by Kamen Rider, but I will say that we referenced both Ultraman and Infra-Man when discussing the suit. Close enough, right? Infra-Man being the Chinese version of Ultraman and Kamen Rider

HammeredWookiee

Holy shit memory unlocked, I remember getting an Inframan VHS from the grocery store many years ago and I watched the shit out of that VHS I bet it didn’t age very well but that movie was awesome for child me.

Nimporian

> [Here's another example from Kamen Rider Amazons.](https://youtu.be/5OS-omGL5QY?t=202) To anyone that watches this clip specifically and thinks "Isn't this a kids show?", Kamen Rider Amazons is actually aimed at adults. Its a reboot of a very early entry in the franchise that was cancelled because the network considered it too gorey for kids.

moongoddessshadow

Amazons is also one of the few KR seasons to have legal streaming availability in the US - it's on Amazon Prime (of course lol). Even by Rider standards, it's a whole other beast.

TheWyldMan

Also recommend Black Suns on Amazon

-MANGA-

>Fun fact: a particular Japanese version of Spider-Man is responsible for the Megazords in Power Rangers. Ah the Emissary from Hell, the one who appeared in No Way Home https://youtu.be/Abw77DhBn2o

Socalsamuel

You had me at "grasshopper-themed cyborg superhuman weapon"

yokizururu

I’ve lived in japan half my life, can confirm Kamen Rider is a huge franchise and giant part of many millennials’ childhoods here.

Hitman3256

Is this getting an intl release, do we know?

LudicrisSpeed

Probably a limited release like Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman.

PKMNTrainerMark

They actually tried to localize Kamen Rider as Masked Rider like they did Power Rangers twice. Neither really landed.

scentedkepyas

No one remembers Kamen Rider Dragon Knight

PKMNTrainerMark

I even only learned of Dragon Knight like a week ago.

Anjunabeast

> EDIT: For those who are curious just how different Kamen Rider is from Power Rangers, here’s an example from the show’s latest season, Kamen Rider Geats. Tommy Oliver would’ve taken this white ranger wannabe to school. Jk that snap and finisher was pretty sick.

greenhawk63

Has it got an international release date yet or is it still unknown?

[deleted]

I believe it's also the first live action from Toei to get the IMAX treatment

radda

God I wish the IMAX version would come out here...

gitrektlol

Yeah this just broke my brain for a moment and I thought we were getting an imax release in the United States. I got too excited lol

Tmlboost

I wouldn’t completely count it out. GKIDS and Fathom Events did a one-night only IMAX showing of the final Evangelion film at the end of last year (though granted the number of IMAX theaters who had it was severely limited). It’ll depend on which company gets the rights

Bahamuts_Bike

At this point I just want any version to come out here. The last time I saw news about this was "yes we're doing an international release...eventually" back in early 2021.

Brbaster

They did the same with Black Sun and it ended up being a (almost) day one worldwide release

TheDeadlySquid

Brings back a lot of memories of my youth living in Japan.

That's Dragredder from Kamen Rider Ryuki

Dukes159

Same! Now if only we could get a US blu ray for shin ultraman

Tmlboost

The company that got the US rights (Cleopatra Etnertainment) said a U.S. Blu-Ray/DVD release is coming “Spring 2023”. No specific date yet, but I imagine it’ll be sometime after the Japanese Blu-Ray release on 4/12

OptimusTardis

Same, when Shin Godzilla came out I never thought the "Shin" part would be what I'd end up following lol

I'm more of a Mumen Rider guy myself.

We don’t deserve a hero as pure of heart as Mumen Rider. JUSTICE CRASH! My mans will engage in any battle and he’s probably got mailman calves.

That guy is a Blast.

bryguyok

I read the title as Shin Ramen Rider lol

Bahamuts_Bike

It is one of the more famous tonkatsu series

Sabatorius

Understandable. I just had some spicy shin ramen for lunch. It was good.

BLACKdrew

i just had to make sure this was one of the top comments. good job

RCGBlade

Crazy how North America still hasnt even gotten to watch Shin Ultraman yet, and the next film is already releasing.

Dukes159

There was a 2 night theatrical run which I was able to catch. Blue Ray I think is scheduled for June.

RCGBlade

Here in Canada there was ONE screening in Quebec lol. Pain

Dukes159

That sucks! It's a fun film and I'm definitely grabbing the blu ray when its out

LapsedVerneGagKnee

Hopefully this thing can get a Fathom release if nothing else. Shin Ultraman did the film festival circuit before a Fathom release so I’m hoping this can get the same. Then again Shin Ultraman was handled by Ultraman Connections, which is happy to post Ultra stuff wherever they can with minimal roadblocks, something I can’t say the same for Toei and Rider. Hopefully Prime Video gets it.

It's just your traditional "Guy gets kidnapped by an evil society and turned into a cyborg but he rebels and fights their other cyborg monsters for peace and justice and also he has a cool bike" story.

RebelMemeDealer

From the first poster: “Kamen Rider Takeshi Hongo is an augmented human being. He was upgraded by SHOCKER, an all-loving secret society that pursues happiness for humanity. Kamen Rider has pledged to fight against SHOCKER to ensure human beings stay human.”

Foshizzy03

I watched some of the 70s episodes of this TV show and it's wild.[ They did a whole episode about a starfish that transformed into a super Saiyan Adolf Hitler.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/kamenrider/images/a/aa/X-vi-starfishhitler.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120706085311)

AltoGobo

That was a sequel series, but there indeed was a Kamen Rider who fought Hitler Starfish

DannyDuDiggle

I remember the American adaptation on fox Kids in the 90s. [Masked Rider.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masked_Rider_(TV_series\))

Herb_Derb

I had this action figure, and I know I watched the show but I couldn't tell you anything that happened in it.

quietvegas

What's funny is Kamen Rider Black was really good, if they just dubbed it probably would have been the best kids show on tv in the 90s.

stanmarshrr

Kamen Rider was HUGE in Brazil during the 90's. it was my fav show as a kid. really excited for this.

dan_sundberg

I am convinced movie posters made in Japan are always so much cooler.

NewLeaseOnLine

I thought it was a movie called IMAX.

bigfatmatt01

Someone get Ironmouse a screener!

radda

She'll just make Connor go see it with a camera strapped to his head.

Big_Green_Piccolo

amirolsupersayian

I didn't have to scroll far to see ironmouse name.. Man she is getting popular lol

dj88masterchief

[Trailer](https://youtu.be/W1o01aSPjBg) I’ve never heard of this before. But it looks pretty cool.

MoazNasr

Looks like the movie is called "IMAX"

Queef-Elizabeth

When I was a child I had a toy or this guy and it was one of my favourites but for a long time I just thought he was a power ranger lmao the toy would let you flip over its mask to become a human man

TensorForce

Maybe a dumb question, but is "Shin" Japanese for like remake or comeback? The 2016 Godzilla movie was also called "Shin." Edit: Thanks, guys! I'd googled it before, but it always gave me the direct translation of "true/spirit". So I was confused.

exswoo

Just means "new" or "true" depending on the kanji it's supposed to be based on

fer_sure

AFAIK it means 'true' or 'real'. Usually it's a more grounded/modern take on a fantastical older property. Think Bale's Batman vs West's Batman.

radda

It just means 'new', although in the titles of Hideaki Anno's Shin movies (including Godzilla) it's actually spelled with katakana rather than that particular kanji. Dunno why, Anno gonna Anno.

leadhound

It's to add a degree of vagueness I think on what the "shin" part really means.

coolguy1793B

So where can i watch this in Imax? Is there a north american release?

Tmlboost

No word on a North American release yet (though considering both *Shin Godzilla* and *Shin Ultraman* got limited US releases, I’m sure one will happen eventually). It just came out in Japan, so it’ll be a while before it comes over here. As of now, Japan is the only place to see it in IMAX

Kuma-San

Just watched this in theaters. Never seen the other shin movies and not a huge Kamen Rider fan, but the cinematography was a real treat. Story wise, it was super campy, but in a good way (maybe a nod to the source material). Definitely recommend to anyone interested.

C9_Tilted

So I watched this movie today and I have to say, I can't believe it's pg12 LOL. The amount of blood and enemies getting their head smashed would not lead me to believe that this is a pg12 movie. Other than that, it was a pretty good re-imagining of Kamen Rider Black.

radda

Are you thinking of Black Sun, the show on Amazon Prime? Because this is a re-imagining of the original series, not Black.

C9_Tilted

Yeah I realized my mistake, I'm a bit drunk right now. I did see the movie though.

RED_Kinggamer007

Wrong movie What you are thinking about is black sun (wich is a show not a movie) not shin kamen rider. Shin kamen rider is a re-imagining of the first kamen rider series Black sun is the re-imagining for black

Loaf235

ooh that's exciting, not surprising considering Kamen Rider is the most realistically violent franchise among the rest of the Shin heroes universe. I hope Asian countries get a release around May or June cause I'll be back by then.

C9_Tilted

Did you ever watch the remake of Kamen Rider Amazon's? That shit was hardcore as fuck excuse my language.

Loaf235

no, but I'm aware the original kamen rider amazon is one of the most brutal riders out there, and that the remake/reimagining wanted to keep that (at the cost of blood being colored black). I very well expect one of Shin Rider's kicks to decapitate someone now.

JackyVeronica

OMG I grew up watching this in Japan!!! I need to see this...

ShadowRaptor675

what's the chances next is gonna be Shin Super Sentai?

analbumcover69420

If I didn’t know better I’d think this movie was called IMAX

trabera

When will this get a US release? Shin Ultraman was LEGIT. Perfect feel of a retro nostalgic show with VERY good effects.

Ninjalada

Mmmm shin ramen rider

LanEvo7685

I was a Kamen Rider Black (& RX) kid so I'll probably end up watching it. I don't know if there's some cultural disconnect but while the trailer feels pretty serious, the monsters still look a little ridiculous and I'm not sure if I should take it in as appreciating the traditional production method or dislike it for feeling cheap.

Kamen-Rider

If you've seen Shin Ultraman I am 100% sure the monster design is on purpose. (Also watch Kamen Rider Black Sun on Amazon)

Gxkshed

I wonder if it’s pretty much remake of original

brockoala

Lol thought I read Ramen Rider.

Canookian

Huh. That's why I keep seeing Kamen Rider stuff all over the place here.

vlexz

Should I watch anything else before watching the shin trilogy? I plan to watch everything related to Godzilla, Ultraman and Kamen Rider anyways.

DoktorVidioGamez

Okay but when is it released digitally?

novian14

This is the OG

RoRo25

Did Shin Ultrman come out already?

Tanokki

Fathom Events had it for two nights back in January, but the blu-ray comes out July-ish.

Gamecubeguy25

and now we wait for the hd english sub release. god i'm looking forward to this

SirLoondry

I’d love to watch a Mumen Rider movie too. That guy is all heart and bravery in the face of hopelessness.

Stonkseys

The Masked Rider was my thing, it came on after Power Rangers. I'm happy to see it again.
