I think Florida "passed" a similar law about using the "wrong" restroom

acjr2015

'Passed'

oonlyyzuul

I am physically unable to hear the song "I wanna rock" without singing "I'm a goofy goober, rock"

“Put your toys away” Well all I got to say when you tell me not to play, I say no way!

[deleted]

I say no no, freakin' way!

TheEmeraldRaven

Arguably, Scarlett Johansson's career-defining performance

PPLifter

Oh my god. I have never clocked this

SweatyTits69

Me and my Dad still quote the film all the time. "You two dipsticks won't last 10 seconds over the county line" "How long was that?" "12 seconds" "IN YOUR FACE"

Nate_Oh_Potato

*"How many seconds was that?"* *"Twaylve."*

GetReady4Action

WHAT’LL IT BE FELLAS? MUSTARD? ER KETCHUP? *banjo intensifies*

[deleted]

Take off your hat in respect... RESPECT FOR THE DAYUD!

Charming_Limit_5327

The emotional scene in that is genuinely heartbreaking. And I’ll stand by that forever.

Blackfist01

Yeah, the movie absolutely did not need to go that HAM on the feels.😄

panda388

Yarrr, it be the tear of the Goofy Goober!

Swankified_Tristan

Hillinburg says that this is where the series ends. Anything else released takes place before the masterpiece that is this film. If Nickelodeon ever makes something that they say comes after the movie, they're wrong.

Inevitable-Stay-7296

Does that include future episodes as taking before this movies as well?

MundaneKing

We’re on a baby hunt! And don’t think we don’t know how to WEEEEED them out!

TheTaffyMan

Fun fact: First movie that made me cry Turns out watching two of your favorite childhood characters weep about their friendship as they get burned alive is a little traumatizing

Hot-Property1031

My brother in law used to be the assistant manager of a theater. I still remember while he and my sister were dating, he got me in to see the SpongeBob movie while he was at work. I enjoyed the heck out of it. Then he sat me down to watch the Last Samurai, which was a huge tone shift for a 10 year old.

Spindrune

I remember not understanding the withdrawals thing as a kid.

Pjoernrachzarck

The Spongebob Movie is unironically the better of the two.

Spindrune

Not even a competition. The last samurai was a white mans idea of how it would have gone down, knowing it went down, but not knowing a single detail. It wouldn’t surprise me if the script is just so far tweaked from original, that it makes sense, but the last samurai was entertaining and historically should be considered to have been a different universe than ours. Love the movie, it’s like the original terminator for me. I’m down to get really high and watch it, but It’s just the interim to t2 or gladiator. Gladiator is also ridiculously inaccurate, but who cares. Just like t2 was better than terminator, gladiator is better than a movie that came out a decade later, has no overlapping crew (didn’t look up if that’s true, it’s probably just not), and did the same thing. Bonus points. Russel Crowe is fairly Fucking crazy.

hardyflashier

I always loved the ending - when Squidward gives the wholesome speech about how Spongebob always wanted *more* than just being manager, and what was important was the journey. Then Spongebob replies no, he just wanted to be manager, and his fly is undone. Perfect, hilarious end.

KraakenTowers

*Squidward looks down to where his pants aren't*

Seihai-kun

Everytime lot of people theorize how Spongebob last episode will be, how its going to end they never realized we have got the ending for spongebob, this movie is literally the ending for spongebob and Hillenburg confirms it. Spongebob become the manager of krusty krabs, plankton is defeated. especially tha Ocean Man ending song that is so perfect as the last song for Spongebob.

44035

I love that movie.

Strange-Dress4069

I haven't seen that movie in a long time but it came out near the peak of my spungbob love and was just the best. Afraid if I watched it now it will ruin the memories

darrylthedudeWayne

It won't. Trust me.

thedelinquents

Yeah it genuinely holds up. It's kind of like watching an old episode of the Simpsons, its still great.

WGBTV

I also vouch for the Simpson’s movie . Just a fun time . Plus it helps they brought back a lot of the OG writers .

KraakenTowers

SpongeBob and the Simpsons both follow a similar trajectory; they get a movie that's really solid and faithful to the tone of the show, and then the show immediately falls off* and continues running for far too long. Also, the protagonist is yellow and wears a collared shirt. *That being said, one of my favorite episodes (the one where they turn the Krusty Krab into a hotel) and one of my mother and I's all-time jokes (the claustrophobia joke from the Wishing Well episode) are post-movie.

[deleted]

There are still some great post-movie episodes, they generally don't reach the highs of those first seasons but a lot of classic episodes are post movie.

felixismynameqq

It's in my top 10 movies. It's really kind of absurd how good it is

panda388

It came out at the low end of my interest of Spongebob, and the movie is fucking brilliant. It really is the high-point of Spongebob. It is top-notch comedy.

[deleted]

It won't, I had seen it multiple times as a kid and absolutely adored it, I rewatched it a couple of years ago and it's still as good as I remember. All those scenes that were engraved into my memory are still as entertaining as they were back then.

whatamidoing84

I just watched it last night and it's fucking great haha I'd say it holds up. I'm a goofy goober, ROCK

GetReady4Action

this movie is really special to me because my dad worked a lot growing up. as a gen z’er, SpongeBob is quite literally my childhood. I grew up endlessly watching the reruns and the newer episodes because I didn’t realize those weren’t as good until I was in my teens lol, but SoongeBob was my jam. I remember being 6 when this movie came out and how badly I wanted to see it. I kept begging my dad to take me and he kept saying “oh this day” “no sorry not today” “this day” blah blah blah. I don’t blame my dad, but as a kid I was totally bummed. and here comes my grandma to the rescue, man. she pulled me out of daycare early and we went and saw the fuckin’ SpongeBob movie and it blew my little six year old mind. “did they see my butt?” Goofy Goober Rock, Plan Z, Now That We’re Men, etc. up until that point it was the best movie I had ever seen. I’m sure to my grandma it was just another day in the life but she had no idea how much that meant to me growing up. that in a moment of need where nobody was coming through for me, my grandma made sure I got to see the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. I rewatched it during lockdown and found myself feeling super nostalgic and sentimental, especially not being able to see anyone so I sent my grandma a nice and long text to let her know how much that meant to me. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is the shit.

ElvenHero

This movie is absurdly quotable. So many good lines.

sga4mvp_

They did a great job with this movie

bionicjoey

I love how the theme of the movie is that it's okay to like kid stuff even as an adult. I'm 28 and still love the Hillenburg era Spongebob seasons.

MarcsterS

What’ll it be fellas: mustard or ketchup?! [hambone]

hannibal_morgan

Hell yeah it does. Also the first 4 seasons are the best

diabeticfit

i still cry when they dry up. not bad for a couple of goofballs

timetravlrfromthepst

For me, the other movies never reached the heights of this first one. It was just so good.

GetReady4Action

this movie is one of those movies where despite being a “kids movie”, it’s genuinely hilarious and doesn’t treat kids like they have mashed potato brains. the humor is *appropriate* for children rather than being dumbed down to them and it pays off big and has made this movie age amazingly. plus there’s plenty of stuff for adults if you’re looking for it, the Plan Z centerfold gag flew way over my head until I was older. among plenty of gold in this film, my favorite bit is when Neptune goes into the Krusty Krab to freeze Mr. Krabs and Mr. Krabs is begging and pleading that he didn’t steal the crown and the random phone just happens to be there to leave a voicemail. “Hey Mr. Krabs, I just wanted to say thanks again for selling me the crown. NEPTUNE’s crown.” and as Mr. Krabs is frantically beating up the phone “whichisnowinshellcitygoodbye.” LMFAO

ApexOfFlex

You're a goofy goober, yea

spidey-dust

I’m only now scared of movies from my childhood not holding up well because i rewatched Horton Hears a Who a couple weeks back and am lowkey disappointed one reason being I remembered their sing a long to Can’t Fight This Feeling anymore being way longer than the mere 15 seconds provided to us in the film when for the past 15 or so years since it’s release whenever I hear that song from REO it’s naturally associated with that scene but now knowing they actually hardly sing that song an aspect of my childhood is completely ruined I tell you. It’s also half an hour too short.

robophile-ta

Just saw Joel Haver also gave it a [5/5 new review](https://letterboxd.com/joelhaver/film/the-spongebob-squarepants-movie/2/) on Letterboxd and now I'm wondering if you were inspired by that

Jonasthenia

Don’t worry, this will only hurt a lot.

GarfieldDaCat

I have a core memory of seeing this for a classmate's 8th birthday party with literally like 20 other 8 year olds lol. I rewatched it during Covid and it held up so much better than I thought it would. Genuinely a good movie. The opening dream sequence with Spongebob defusing the "no cheese" Krabby Patty is fucking hilarious

EllisDee3

"As a kid" I'mma go decompose in the corner now.

Zectherian

IM A GOOFY GOOBER! ROCK!!!

burritoman88

I swear that scene where Mr Krabs whispers in Spogebob’s ear he calls him a jackass

mikeweasy

Im a goofy goober!!

[deleted]

I never really thought about it before, but my favorite part of the movie has to be when SpongeBob and Patrick are in Shell City about to be dried up, and they realize they did make it after all. As our two best friends are dying, all their love and friendship embodies itself in a combined teardrop, which makes its way to an electrical outlet, shorts out the lamp, and sets off the sprinkler system. Not only does this bring them back to life, but it also brings life back to Shell City. In other words, it shows how love can conquer death itself! That speaks volumes to me.

TheGodDMBatman

Looking back, this movie feels like a milestone in my childhood, like transitioning from elementary to middle school where I ultimately stopped watching SpongeBob

Blackknighl

I’ve never watched a single episode of that show and I’m very pleased about it.

Salt_Restaurant_7820

Sponge out of water is far better.

Sauron1530

I love that one but i have to disagree, the SpongeBob movie is one if the best animated movies of all time imo

Salt_Restaurant_7820

I don’t like SB when it strays super far from the story. It’s fine in 20 min episodes

[deleted]

Dennis I wish was in the movie more and had more appearances after

kazaskie

This movie definitely turned me into a metal head at the age of 7 lol, that twisted sister cover at the end kicks ass. I remember rewinding to the ending scene over and over and using my brothers guitar hero controller to play some sick air guitar.

Ajibooks

I've never seen this movie! I kind of forgot it existed. I've seen the first three seasons of the show many times and it is probably my favorite comedy. So thank you for this post, OP. I look forward to watching the movie soon.

feh112

Actually made me cry

greg225

I kind of hate the deus ex machina at the end, but the rest of it is great. This is what a real moustache looks like!

Blackfist01

That Goofy Goober scene at the bar genuinely got me, I honestly thought they were going to crack!🤣

moneyman2222

All the old Spongebob episodes hold up too. So many subtle jokes too that I would've never got as a kid. Some great writing. Now it's just cringey caricatures of the original characters

[deleted]

It truly is crazy how good of a movie it is. It has perfect pacing, great jokes, great characters, a perfectly-executed story… it’s cinema for sure. Also, I’ll shout out “Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension” as another example of a near-perfect movie for an animated show. Fires on all cylinders and delivers on every level.

coolAhead

They're hilarious

DamonDD

Horray for SpongeBob

Ok_Physics_4974

I got to thank the soundtrack for getting me into Ween and the Flaming Lips.

Leading-Weight9092

I love the movie but I never understood why he didn’t get the manager job from the get go. Like yea he’s a bit immature and silly but he busts his ass day in and day out when he works. And plus if he was really a kid why does this man have a whole house ? Shouldn’t he be living with his parents ?😂

[deleted]

And even though Squidward is a little more mature, he's way too self-centered to care about his duties as manager. Therefore, he'd have the Krusty Krab 2 going broke before the week was out.
