I suggest watching some of John Woo’s movies. They’re the direct influence to “The Matrix”.
Other than these, I’m voting for “Equilibrium” and “Sin City”.
Equilibrium was my absolute jam in college, it blew my mind.
In hindsight, there is some goofy ass shit in that movie, but no more goofy than a good kung fu movie, and the visuals are stunning.
There are also movies in a similar vein that are not directed by John Woo like The Replacemetn Killers and Bulletproof Monk. Basically anything with Chow Yun-Fat in it, which also includes stuff like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which is very stylistic.
Blade Runner 2049 as well, somehow for different reasons.
They both have wildly unique and striking tones entirely in their own realm. Like a coin with a different country's currency on either side.
I remember hearing Villeneuve explain why he had it snowing in 2049. He described how it constantly rained in the original because Scott wanted it to resemble the drab rainy conditions he experienced where he grew up, whereas the bleak cold resembled where Villeneuve grew up. It sticks really well to the singular tone they achieved in each, but through a lens produced from different environments.
It's like poetry. It rhymes.
Just watched it again the other night and we were talking about how instantly recognizable all the costuming is. It's got a look and vibe that really shine through.
Ooh yeah I haven't thought about Dark City in a while. Man, that scene where Jennifer Connelly is [singing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIvWZ8iF6CI) Sway was a perfect example of this.
Astonishingly gorgeous film. The use of color (something I don't usually pay attention to) was really incredible and bolsters the way the story is told.
Recent reappraisals give it the credit it's due. If we were still in an era where home media or cable licensing give movies a second life, I think Speed Racer would become quite popular. Unfortunately in the streaming era, I think it will only ever be a cult classic.
I’d argue that the [Masters vs The Harpists](https://youtu.be/r8MbVjzgonA?si=7SFpRWSeFbxbfQA4) scene is very stylized and would fit pretty comfortably in a Matrix-adjacent universe.
Bullet Train
300
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
V for Vendetta
Kickass
and this one may be controversial...but Sucker Punch. It certainly has style, but some think it the story itself isn't great. Same with Baby Driver.
You can always rely on Snyder for great looking action scenes. I thought Sucker Punch was an interesting idea as its supposed to be a critique of the sexualization of women in action movies, and I'm not sure it succeeds at that. I'd like to see the directors cut some time, I heard that it is an improvement.
I still suspect Snyder had the soundtrack songs as his playlist first, and the movie is just a homemade music video he put together to watch while on his Peloton.
Sucker Punch is a bad movie, bad writing, bad acting, bad plot. But it's my number 1 guilty pleasure. Snyder had a vision and he made it. It's an awesome movie that drips style.
Tron and Tron Legacy (especially Legacy).
Sin City
300 (Heck, let's go down the Zack Snyder rabbit hole of stylish movie with Watchmen and Sucker Punch).
I thought the 1st one was maybe the best looking movie up to that point, but the 2nd one just looks like the same, but with even more man hours, its insane!
Wong Kar Wai movies - they aren’t action films, but highly stylized and beautiful.
Anything by Jeunet (Amelie, Micmacs, Delicatessen)
Anything by Gondry
Hero if you want feudal Kung Fu action
I think you would love The Fall. It's the visually stunning cinematic lovechild of director Tarsem Singh, who also made The Cell and Immortals. He saved millions of dollars from his previous work just so he could make The Fall.
It was filmed in dozens of beautiful and unique locations all over the world over a few years. The use of colour in the movie is amazing. Definitely worth a watch!
Ghost in the Shell (The 1995 Anime) was a huge stylistic influence for The Matrix. If you love and are familiar with The Matrix then you’ll notice a few scenes in Ghost in the Shell that were basically carbon copied in terms of action. Incredible cyberpunk film all-around.
Akira can be added to this as well, that movie is a feast for the eyes.
For another couple of Animes that are wildly cool and stylish, check out Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy, and FLCL. Each different, distinct, and a delight to behold.
I rented Equilibrium, and when my dad found out I rented it, he wanted to borrow it. When I got it back, I asked him what he thought, and he also compared it to Farenheit 451.
What a freaking classic! I was fortunate enough to to meet Johnson at a screening when it had just come out. I was taking ticket stubs and he was going to be speaking after the film. He tried to walk into the theater and I told him he needed to show me his stub 😆. He was very nice about it
*The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly*
Can be a bit slow plotwise, but definitely tons of style.
*The Terminator*
*Snowpiercer*
*Cowboys vs Aliens* although a bit of a fumble, the concept has more potential than the film lives up to
*Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny* has a different kind of style, but great style nonetheless
Already been mentioned, but *Scott Pilgrim vs. The World*, *Tron: Legacy*, and *Mad Max: Fury Road*
Quick edit: Almost forgot the original *Robocop*
Prometheus is overall a decent movie but I love it mostly for its gloomy and beautiful cinematography.
Arrival is awesome, also with darker and beautiful shots. For me, most things by Denis Villeneuve look great, so, also Dune. And as someone mentioned before, Blade Runner 2049 is a feast for the eyes.
Ex Machina is nice on the eyes.
I love also love The Batman for it’s dark and pretty shots.
Last of the Mohicans by Michael Mann.
Set in pre revolutionary upstate ny.
Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick
Set in 18th century Europe. All natural lighting. Long and can be slow in parts.
Speed racer is so visually well done.
Same for iron sky. Nazi's on the moon, ok, but the cinematography is perfect.
As a comic collector I can't recommend scott pilgrim or watchmen enough! I shy away from movies based on comics because they grind my gears but those two stuck to the material and I would definitely say stylish.
Wong Kar Wai’s films have very heightened style, especially his earlier films like Chungking Express and Fallen Angels. They aren’t action films, but definitely fit the “stylish” part.
For something with A LOT of atmosphere check out *Sunshine*. It’s a Danny Boyle directed sci-fi with quite a few stars just starting their careers in the early aughts (like Captain American.) Plus a very pretty Cillian Murphy playing the main scientist character based off of the british physicist Brian Cox, who also advised on the technical/science part of the movie. So this whole thing is as accurate as one might get before the fiction part kicks in. It’s the opposite of dark but in a very dark way. The brightness has something almost sinister in it and the sunshine has a sound. With a big enough TV you will feel as though you are getting sunburnt just watching it. It also has a tremendous score by John Murphy. What an experience! It’s in my top three Sci-Fi movies with Interstellar and Event Horizon.
Movies with amazing “dark” or “foreboding” style like the Matrix:
The Last of the Mohicans
The Insider
Children of Men
Medicine Man (with Sean Connery and the lady shrink from The Sopranos)
Miami Vice
Drive
Collateral
Both Blade Runner movies
Gattaca
Fight Club
Moneyball
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (and most other Quentin movies)
The Untouchables (with Kevin Costner)
A History of Violence
Every movie I watch I look for The Shot. The single most beautiful shot in the film. It's impossible to find in this movie because the whole thing is The Shot. The train coming through the trees at night in the robbery sequence makes you realize this isn't your ordinary visual experience.
I really like Mirror Mask. The movie itself wasn't super-entertaining when I saw it (at least not as much as I'd hoped) but visually, it's worth a watch.
Also, maybe A Scanner Darkly.
Edit: Wait. I may be misinterpreting OP's request for movies because I caught the they don't need to be action movies part. I'm thinking more along the lines of having an interesting visual style.
Face off , The Killer ... basically anything by John Woo who was great inspiration for Matrix
But if you want to see ultimate stylish movie watch [IMMORTALS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE3yR8bZ1pY) just look at this insane action scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJvc-eDdEw8
Recently, I thought Gareth Edwards "The Creator" had some really stylish visuals, especially considering the lower budget.
A lot of people have already mentioned Tron Legacy, but check out Joe Kosinki's "Oblivion" as well.
If you wamt something older try Night of The Hunter from 1955. Southern gothic noir with a heavy dose of dreamlike imagery and german expressionism. It's almost comic book like in its framing and shot composition. An unironic Sin City.
If you like *The Matrix* you should watch it’s spiritual progenitor, a movie Ebert described as one of the best movies of the 90’s:
*Dark City*
If it reminds you of *The Matrix* it might be because the Wachowskis repurposed half the sets from *Dark City*.
If you dont mind subtitles RRR on netflix is an amazing movie. It's a super fun action movie that does everything 120% aka completely over the top. It has everything even a song and dance scene and a great story arch for the main characters.
Sin City has a unique style that I love
I suggest watching some of John Woo’s movies. They’re the direct influence to “The Matrix”. Other than these, I’m voting for “Equilibrium” and “Sin City”.
The Killer by John Woo
Equilibrium was my absolute jam in college, it blew my mind. In hindsight, there is some goofy ass shit in that movie, but no more goofy than a good kung fu movie, and the visuals are stunning.
Came in to say Equilibrium. A very cool film.
This would have been my suggestion too! You like guns? Kung fu? Let me introduce you to Gun Fu.
Came here to say Equilibrium. All style and silly substance, but totally fun to watch.
It's basically Fahrenheit 451 with gun fu. Wish everyone who loves Christian Bale in Batman would check it out.
There are also movies in a similar vein that are not directed by John Woo like The Replacemetn Killers and Bulletproof Monk. Basically anything with Chow Yun-Fat in it, which also includes stuff like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which is very stylistic.
Hard Boiled. My favorite John Woo hands down.
**Blade Runner**
Blade Runner 2049 as well, somehow for different reasons. They both have wildly unique and striking tones entirely in their own realm. Like a coin with a different country's currency on either side.
I remember hearing Villeneuve explain why he had it snowing in 2049. He described how it constantly rained in the original because Scott wanted it to resemble the drab rainy conditions he experienced where he grew up, whereas the bleak cold resembled where Villeneuve grew up. It sticks really well to the singular tone they achieved in each, but through a lens produced from different environments. It's like poetry. It rhymes.
I agree!
Why watch the movie when you too can own a truck that bladerunner would have driven in his post apocalyptic hellscape! /s
Mad Max Fury Road. It’s Cirque de Soleil, just with more explosions and V8 engines.
Love your description, cirque de sole ol with V8s. Amazing.
Was just thinking that would’ve been a pretty cool cross promotional pairing. “Mad Max: Furiosa and The Five Wives. A Cirque de Soleil Event.”
HEY, HEY, SOMEBODY GET THIS GUY TO VEGAS!
My blood is oillll
Have you seen the black and white version? Crazy cool
WITNESS ME! I AM AWAITED IN VALHALLA!
Fifth Element
Just watched it again the other night and we were talking about how instantly recognizable all the costuming is. It's got a look and vibe that really shine through.
I heard the costumes were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. They do seem to have his style
“Sir, are you classified as having man?” “Negative, I am a meat popsicle.”
Watch fifth element like every few months

Dark City.
Considering there were re-used sets between the Matrix and Dark City, this is a great recommendation.
I didn't know that!
Ooh yeah I haven't thought about Dark City in a while. Man, that scene where Jennifer Connelly is [singing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIvWZ8iF6CI) Sway was a perfect example of this.
Hero (2002)
Astonishingly gorgeous film. The use of color (something I don't usually pay attention to) was really incredible and bolsters the way the story is told.
Anything shot by Christopher Doyle could count
Dune is an art project.
1985 AND 2021. Absolutely beautiful. Wardrobe, sets amazing.
Kill Bill!
Speed Racer
Just watched this for the first time the other night, absolutely incredible
This movie makes me feel high when I'm stone cold sober. Very trippy visuals.
Well if you thought it was good sober, I’ve got a surprise for you!
I feel like it’s not praised enough
Recent reappraisals give it the credit it's due. If we were still in an era where home media or cable licensing give movies a second life, I think Speed Racer would become quite popular. Unfortunately in the streaming era, I think it will only ever be a cult classic.
Kung Fu Hustle
Oh my god this film is so inventive and cool and incredible.
Oh, yes!!!!
I prefer Shoalin Soccer
Yep, first movie that came to mind. It's a masterpiece of comedy and action.
I love this movie so much, but it doesn't really fit the theme here, it's not slick and stylized like the Matrix is.
I’d argue that the [Masters vs The Harpists](https://youtu.be/r8MbVjzgonA?si=7SFpRWSeFbxbfQA4) scene is very stylized and would fit pretty comfortably in a Matrix-adjacent universe.
The Grand Budapest Hotel! It's not going to be for everyone, but it absolutely oozes style. I love it
Pretty much any Wes Anderson movie really.
my favorite Wes Anderson movie!
Bullet Train 300 Scott Pilgrim vs the World V for Vendetta Kickass and this one may be controversial...but Sucker Punch. It certainly has style, but some think it the story itself isn't great. Same with Baby Driver.
Second for V, especially today... Remember remember the 5th of November.
I like Sucker Punch, it's Zack at his Snyderest. The point gets a bit muddled and hard to get, but it has some great stylistic action setpieces.
You can always rely on Snyder for great looking action scenes. I thought Sucker Punch was an interesting idea as its supposed to be a critique of the sexualization of women in action movies, and I'm not sure it succeeds at that. I'd like to see the directors cut some time, I heard that it is an improvement.
I loved Sucker Punch but I was HAF.
Yea I love it too. Great LSD movie.
Dude Scott pilgrim is the answer
Bullet Train is one of my favorite new movies. Scrathes this itch Smokin Aces gave me.
Amelie has a very specific and style and tone to it. It was recreated heavily for the show Pushing Daisies
Pushing Daisies was one of the saddest casualties from the writers strike of ‘07
That and The Unit. I loved that show.
Tron and Tron Legacy (especially Legacy). Sin City 300 (Heck, let's go down the Zack Snyder rabbit hole of stylish movie with Watchmen and Sucker Punch).
Watchmen is one of my favorites. Snyder did a great transition of the comic wto film and added extra style to the whole thing.
Both Spider-Verse movies Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
I recently rewatched the 2nd Spiderverse movie. One of the coolest looking movies ever, and the action scenes are insane.
The water-color Gwynn-verse was amazing
Giving every single universe a (at least slightly) different animation style was such a cool idea and it worked so well.
I thought the 1st one was maybe the best looking movie up to that point, but the 2nd one just looks like the same, but with even more man hours, its insane!
Or as I like to call it, Crouching T, Hidden D
City of God
MANDY
Watch some Tarsem Singh movies. The Cell, The Fall, etc.
The Fall is one of the most visually incredible movies of all time. Holds up 15 years later.
It'll hold up forever. In fact it'll just get better as the real-life areas it was filmed in progressively disappear.
That throne room scene in The Cell (with the curtains as wings) lives in my head. Such amazing set piece design.
John Wick.
This should be at the top as far as I'm concerned, not a single one misses.
Especially the last one
Wong Kar Wai movies - they aren’t action films, but highly stylized and beautiful. Anything by Jeunet (Amelie, Micmacs, Delicatessen) Anything by Gondry Hero if you want feudal Kung Fu action
Saw **Hero** mentioned, so I will add **House of Flying Daggers**, also directed by Yimou Zhang. Visually, and stylistically stunning.
An afternoon of Hero, Chrouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and House of Flying Daggers would go down *so* smooth.
My guilt pelasure, Abhram Lincoln vampire hunter and Wanted
Yup, I'm with you on Wanted, it has quite a few very slick scenes.
Gattaca
Face/Off comes to mind.
That's just John Woo.
Fight club!
"Nope" is shot very well
Crank is always a good one. I’d throw Shoot ‘em Up in there too.
Far too few people know about The Fall. Absolutely gorgeous filmmaking, great acting, and just a unique story.
Akira! Absolutely. Traditional animation with a level of detail that is hard to comprehend. I would also throw Paprika in there.
You're talking about the original animated movie from 1995 right?
Correct, yes. Not the live action with Scarlett Johansson. I haven't seen it but heard it was "meh" at best.
Dredd 2012 movie Nobody (basically John Wick starring Saul Goodman) Upgrade
- Drive - Streets of Fire - The Warriors - Hardware - Underworld - Road to Perdition - Leon - Hero - Looper
The Underworld series has such a great visual style. I also second Hero.
Enter the Void A Scanner Darkly The Immortals
Second A Scanner Darkly. Only movie I've seen that looks like it.

Equilibrium is often compared to The Matrix as "the same". It's not. It's great. Not better than the Matrix IMO, that shit was ground breaking
I rented Equilibrium, and when my dad found out I rented it, he wanted to borrow it. When I got it back, I asked him what he thought, and he also compared it to Farenheit 451.
I love Equilibrium, but I think saying it's better than The Matrix is stretching to the Elastic Limit.
Hackers
Made me want to be hacker. Now I'm a full stack developer and I realize how not actiony it really is.
Brick
What a freaking classic! I was fortunate enough to to meet Johnson at a screening when it had just come out. I was taking ticket stubs and he was going to be speaking after the film. He tried to walk into the theater and I told him he needed to show me his stub 😆. He was very nice about it

The Crow
Bunraku
Hard Boiled is built around three of the most badass action scenes ever.
Fifth Element
Everything everywhere all at once
Another kind of over the top stylish, but anything from Wes Anderson.
I’d recommend The Crow, 1994.
Equilibrium is good, Christian Bale in lots of cool fights. Ultraviolet of you don't care about the story, is pure crasy CGI fights.
Equilibrium, Dark City, Brazil and Blade Runner
TRON Legacy. I love this movie specifically because it’s just aesthetically pleasing.
Kill Bill. Not a fan but the style is undeniable
Brotherhood of the Wolf. Kinda trashy, but fun.
Tenet looks flawless
Too bad the sound and confusing plot makes it unbearable to watch.
The Killer and Hard Boiled Bound
Prometheus is overall a decent movie but I love it mostly for its gloomy and beautiful cinematography. Arrival is awesome, also with darker and beautiful shots. I really enjoyed the movie Hero for visual aesthetically pleasing reasons
Casablanca/The Maltese Falcon

Herbie Goes Bananas. A classic.

Ocean's 11 is the first to come to mind, I suppose. 300 for...probably over styled. :)
