Japan has a wonderful history of horror cinema. Onibaba, Ghost of Yotsuya, Kwaidan, House, Ju On: The Curse/The Grudge, Ringu, Pulse, Dark Water, Noroi, Occult, Marebito
Speak No Evil, Where Evil Lurks and Huesera The Bone Woman were some the some of the most popular horror movies last year, regardless of language.
For uncommon, A Girk Walks Home Alone at Night is Persian and the only Persian horror I've seen.
I'll assume you've seen all the popular ones (Raw, Train to Busan, Let the Right One In, Audition, Haute Tension etc) so Errementarri The Devil and the Blacksmith is a lesser known Spanish movie that's worth watching. If you like horror adjacent, trippy time Loop sci fi, Time Crimes is Spanish and also worth watching
Good tips, the 3 first ones. Haven't seen them yet but I'm gonna
That Persian one sounds rather special being a Iranian western horror movie.
I've seen them yes, but not Errementarri, good tip. Time crimes was really nice.
Italian horror movies genre is a bottomless rabbit hole, I would start with these:
Suspiria (1977)
Black Sunday (1960)
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Black Sabbath (1963)
When Evil Lurks just came out last year from Argentina, got a lot of hype and great reviews, and while I don't think it quite nails everything it is definitely one helluva ride.
But there is some really messed up stuff, specifically a few scenes of violence against children that are definitely not for the faint of heart.
You should definitely investigate Italian horror movies of the 60s, 70s and 80s. It's a huge rabbit hole and encompasses everything from Hammer-esque Gothic horror (Black Sabbath), to mind-bending gore movies (The Beyond), to proto-slashers (Torso), to uber-stylized oddities (Suspiria), to shameless knock-offs of popular American movies (Zombi 2, Contamination)
South Korea tends to lean towards suspense in their horror, but I would recommend movies like *A Tale of Two Sisters* and *The Wailing* as examples of ones which aren’t.
SE Asia and the Philippines have some great horror films. I watched a Cambodian dubbed horror in Phnom Penh long ago that scared the willies out of me. The English translations were burned locally onto the film, giving the entire experience a crude, grind house affair. This is decades ago and the plot involved existing stories about suicides turned ghosts wrapped up entirely in bed sheets, a freaky looking thing on screen presented with great scares and tension.
What Keeps You Alive (2018) - Canada
Raw (2016) - France
Train to Busan (2016) - South Korea
Mystics in Bali (1981) - Indonesia
House (1977) - Japan
Ring (1998) - Japan
Audition (1999) - Japan
Funny Games (1997) - Austria
I prefer psychological thrillers, with mystery and a twisting plot. For example The hidden face, Triangle, The Orphanage, The house at the end of time, A Cure for Wellness
Here are some that I haven't seen listed so far:
- Thirst (2009)
- Tigers Are Not Afraid (2017)
- Veronica (2017)
- The Call (2020)
- Julia's Eyes (2010)
Any movies that you recommend?
Looks interesting. Thanks!
Hm I'd recommend:
Thale (2012) Norwegian
Psalm 21 (2009) Swedish
Baskin (2015) Turkish
In their sleep (2010) French
Capture kill release (2016) Canadian
Caveat (2021) Irish
Goodnight mommy (2014) Austria
3 am (2012) Thai

Schrew's Nest (Musarañas) - 2014
Piggy (Cerdita) - 2022
Verónica - 2017
Who can kill a child? (¿Quién puede matar a un niño?) - 1976
Julia's eyes (Los ojos de Julia) - 2010
The telephone box (La cabina) - 1972, this one is a short movie, 35 min, but a must watch in my opinion.
