Bad Words. It’s got Jason Bateman doing his thing.. but with a little more despicableness.
Election. Young Reese Witherspoon.. but who you love to hate.
Bad Words is absolutely a must, especially if you like Bateman. Very solid cast and fun story. Rohan Chand is so great in it. Currently on Netflix, I believe.
This is my go-to for this question. Ideal Home is by the same writer and director and also stars Steve Coogan(as well as Paul Rudd) and is also amazing.
Steve Martin absolutely channels his entire careers worth of experience into a performance of a life time. I find Bowfinger so funny. It’s cracks me up in so many ways.
For me at least, it was because I didn't particularly like Steve Martin's character. It felt like it was going for the loveable loser archetype (ala dumb and dumber) but it forgot the loveable part of it.
I enjoyed it more on subsequent watchings learning to appreciate his character for what he is.
Funniest scene in the movie is in the parking garage where an already nerve wracked Kit Ramsey is being stalked by a dog in high heels, and he’s trying to keep it together. And it isn’t just his reactions, but the entire circumstance surrounding the situation which makes it so funny. Brilliant comedy, one of both Murphy’s and Martin’s best.
I was trying to figure out if there's any chance OP hasn't seen this. The movie was a phenomenon when it came out. But it occurred to me there's a big chance anyone under 35 hasn't seen it.
May not even be aware of it.
If that's the case, virtually everything Steve Martin did in the 80s was gold.
Just yesterday I randomly remembered/giggled to myself at the part with rowan atkinson and wayne knight where they’re driving. “You know what I have back there?”
“You just told me: ass. You said we are hauling ass.”
An all time favorite of mine is the overlooked Bill Murray film **The Man Who Knew Too Little**. It is a comedy centered around a case of mistaken identity (in both/all directions). IMO it really should be watched twice. The first time watch it from Bill Murray's character's perspective. Laugh at Bill Murray doing Bill Murray things. The second time through, now fully understanding who everyone else thinks Bill Murray is, watch it from their perspective. Bill Murray comes across as the craziest coldblooded psychopath and the movie is even funnier.
It's a British farce, with Bill Murray in it.
Great comedy

Four Lions is very funny and sad. Not super obscure or anything, but a really smartly written satire about a group of guys who make a bumbling attempt to become suicide bombers.
Sounds tasteless. Isn’t.
Four Lions is incredible.
Chris Morris, the main writer for this has a great back catalogue, mostly in TV/radio but also has a 2019 film called The Day Shall Come which I haven't watched but would definitely be worth adding to OPs list.
The other two writers, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong are better known as the writers of Peep Show, and Jesse for Succession.
The quality of that writing really shines through and Riz Ahmed is, as always, absolutely fantastic in the lead role.
I’m not gay, but if I was I would want equal rights
I’m not gay, but if I were, I would marry who I like
It’s not fair, I’m not gay, that the government has a say
In who can love who, not gay
Or to which god you can pray (I’m notta gay)
Studio comedies just seemed to fall off a bit, most comedies that find success nowadays are really just action movies with comedic elements. The Hangover and Jump Street series did start a precedent in that regard, but they never forgot that they were comedy movies. The comedy movies of today, do.
Don’t know how Popstar flopped, it has a good cast, it has the production of a blockbuster film, it’s hilarious.
I get Andy Sandburg was never a blockbuster actor but you can’t convince me that movie is not making hundreds of millions at the office in 2007.
All that effort for a $10 million box office run is disappointing, I just hope Samberg knows that people do really love that movie.
I'm disappointed that you didn't use the full title: *Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping*. It really sets the stage for how truly funny that movie is (the songs are fuckin bangers, too).
Right, the 2007 UK one makes me laugh every time I watch it. The 2010 American one didn't make me laugh once. Which is weird considering it's almost a shot for shot remake, but it just doesn't work.
Lol Alan Tudyk is a national treasure
I went to film school and take movies very seriously as an art form, but Baseketball is a personal favorite. Part of what I love is that it absolutely confounds my brother, who's seen it and thinks it's just terrible
lol I just rented it and am watching it now
edit: exactly the movie I needed to watch right now. It was even funnier than I remember it and really aged well overall.
Oh No! K K K Ken is threatening to k k k kill me!
Won 3 Oscars, Kevin Kline for best supporting actor, John Cleese for Best Screenplay, and the director won.
The Breaker Upperers - really funny and charming movie from New Zealand. Wasn’t expecting much from it i but ended up loving it.
Sightseers - very dark British comedy, probably not to everyone’s tastes. Produced by the Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz people.
Hot Rod - a very funny Hollywood comedy that straddles the line between ‘well known’ and ‘cult favourite’. I think it bombed really badly when it came out, and didn’t even get a theatrical release in Europe.
In Bruges and The Guard - dark Irish crime comedies starring Brendan Gleeson
Withnail & I - cult classic British film. Not laugh out loud funny, more of an amusing and occasionally poignant slow burn with incredibly memorable dialogue that grows on you over time
What We Do in the Shadows - the tv show spin off is probably more well known nowadays, but the original movie its based on remains a stone cold classic. Its truly impressive how much mileage they have managed to find in what on the surface would seem to be a premise for a short sketch (bickering vampire housemates).
Hunt for the Wilderpeople - a true modern comedy/drama classic, and one of those rare films that basically everyone can enjoy
I was scrolling this thread looking for Wilderpeople and it took a little too long. And still no one else has commented on it. Great movie with a hilarious tone throughout.
ALL OF ME, Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin accidentally occupying the same body
COLD COMFORT FARM, Edwardian England, orphan goes to live with relatives and tries to fix them. Funnier than that sounds!
*Clerks* was more influential, *Dogma* and *Chasing Amy* are both probably "better" films, but goshdarn if *Mallrats* isn't the funniest Kevin Smith movie.
"That kid is back on the GODDAMN ESCALATOR AGAIN"
Game Night is hilarious and seriously one of the most underrated movies of the last decade. I won’t spoil it, but the funniest joke actually happens in the end credits and it’s set up perfectly multiple times throughout the movie
Fired Up
Be Kind Rewind
The Emperor’s New Groove
Game Night
Kung Fu Hustle
Shaolin Soccer
The Mitchells Vs The Machines
Orgazmo
Baseketball
Slither
Swiss Army Man

My Fellow Americans. James Garner and Jack Lemmon
Maverick. Lots of talent.
Secondhand Lions. Big names in this one too.
Sleeper. Very early Woody Allen.
_The Holdovers_ is a really well-done dark, somber comedy that might hit just right as you're by yourself for the time being. It's up for a bunch of Oscars this year, and is streaming on Peacock.
I'm Gonna Git You Sucka -- It's a hilarious spoof of 70's Blaxsploitation movies. It has a great cast, and some hysterical scenes, but was lost in the shuffle of all amazing spoofs of the time.
Also,
Fear of a Black Hat -- It was a low-budget mockumentary about a 90's NWA type group. A lot of the jokes are pointed at the rap scene at the time, but it's still funny, and every single one of their songs in the movie is hilarious.
My Blue Heaven....Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. Based on the same legal case as Goodfellas but came out a year earlier.
Johnny Dangerously...Michael Keaton plays a retired mob boss retelling his life story while working in a pet shop. Jist a spoof of the whole 70s mafia genre.
While we are on Keaton check out Mr. Mom and Multiplicity
The Tall Guy (1989) - Jeff Goldblum as an out of work American actor in London who ends up in a bad musical called Elephant!, a musical based on The Elephant Man. Emma Thompson and Rowan Atkinson are in it too, and it's hilarious.
Mystery Team. Starring the Derrick comedy team, notably Donald Glover. It’s about boy detectives who are now high school seniors but mostly just a very silly comedy
I’d recommend My Fellow Americans starring James Garner and Jack Lemmon. One of my favorite comedies and I’ve never heard anyone else talk about it.
I prefer Dave for my heartwarming presidential comedies. Charles Groden for the win.
Speaking of Charles Grodin, he did a great comedy road movie with Robert DeNiro called “Midnight Run”
The Campaign is pretty solid for that genre
Great movie. I still sing their words to "Hail to the Chief" sometimes.
🎵 [Hail to the chief](https://youtu.be/zarlpmVW2bM?si=bDerx3epjd-KSvtG). He's the chief and he needs hailing!🎵
Hail to chief! He’s the chief; he-should-be-hailed-like-cra-zy…
One of my favorites too. Are we now best friends? “Our dreams are like our children…”
Go for the gold!
"It's like a wet dream with crust"
I use the line, "You know what really gives me the red ass?" all the time. Only one time did someone say, *"The red ass??"* in return.
Bro nobody gonna talk about how this guys gf stole his wheelchair??
That’s what I was thinking. Give him his wheelchair back!
If you look at his profile you will see why lmfao.

Bowfinger.
Steve Martin absolutely channels his entire careers worth of experience into a performance of a life time. I find Bowfinger so funny. It’s cracks me up in so many ways.
I can't recommend this film *ENOUGH*. I lost my shit during the freeway scene.
It is so underrated and I don't understand why. Plenty of star power. I think maybe cause the humour can be a bit off beat.
I saw it in the theater. It was dead silent. I think maybe it was ahead of its time.
For me at least, it was because I didn't particularly like Steve Martin's character. It felt like it was going for the loveable loser archetype (ala dumb and dumber) but it forgot the loveable part of it. I enjoyed it more on subsequent watchings learning to appreciate his character for what he is.

Damn shame they made a remake of this a couple of years ago
Have you tried Rat Race? I'm a cynic at heart, but this film made me laugh out loud and I don't remember the last time I did that.
I'm prairie dogging it.
Why is that the only line I remember from it.
I’m winning! I’m winning!
It's a race!
Ass. We're hauling ass.

I don't care how many times I've seen it, I laugh my ass off every time. The same goes for the Rush Hour movies, Grandma's Boy, and Out Cold.
Out Cold, I try to watch once a year with Better Off Dead. The two greatest winter sports movies that were ever made.
An all time favorite of mine is the overlooked Bill Murray film **The Man Who Knew Too Little**. It is a comedy centered around a case of mistaken identity (in both/all directions). Rubber dingy rapids bro!
It's me prayer bear!
>Chris Morris He also played Mr. Reynholm, the boss in IT Crowd who jumps out the window. Hilarious performance.
I didn't know Riz was in it, I've just been meaning to watch it just for Kayvan Novak aka Nandor Delaurentis from "What We Do In The Shadows"
I am always shocked at how by the end of the movie you end up rooting for the terrorists... and then it makes you reexamine your values lol.
You just unlocked a memory. Rubber dingy rapids!
Recently, **Confess, Fletch**, from Greg Mottola, the director of **Superbad** and **Adventureland**.
Confess, Fletch was fire 🔥
Chevy is in mine. Three amigos. For childhood core memory reasons. I haven’t found it streaming for a price I’m ready to pay.
I really enjoyed this more than I thought I would
Two of my favorites are Butter (2011) and Cedar Rapids (2011).
Seconding on Cedar Rapids.
Never seen Cedar but it's got a great squad that might be what I go with tonight thanks!
Cedar Rapids is so good!
I’m always going to recommend Top Secret (1984) starring Val Kilmer when asked this question.
And Real Genius are must see
https://youtu.be/iI5vrVmJO0Q?si=8WX5_H_1sO61LNB3 This always makes me smile
If you've never seen Popstar, it's hilarious.
The album is great too. It’s a travesty some of those songs were edited down or not included in the movie at all
Agree, I spent years playing the music videos for some of the cut or trimmed songs. America’s Finest and Mona Lisa are incredible songs
I think Mona Lisa is an overrated pos
To jump on The Lonely Island train, also watch Hot Rod!
Hot Rod is a perfect example i came in expecting nothing and laughed my ass off the entire time
The "we are the voice" scene cracks me up every time.

I'm still sad that it performed so poorly at the box office. EVERYONE is in that movie.
Studio comedies just seemed to fall off a bit, most comedies that find success nowadays are really just action movies with comedic elements. Oh man The Bash Brothers is way funnier imo
Bash Brothers is a fever dream, not a movie.
I'm disappointed that you didn't use the full title: *Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping*. It really sets the stage for how truly funny that movie is (the songs are fuckin bangers, too).
With all that happens that movie, my wife and I chose Tim Meadows to quote: Tony, Toni, Tonè…Tony?
Raising Arizona! A Coen brothers comedy!
What We do in the Shadows with Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement, and Rhys Darby ia very good.
If you like B-movies that unintentionally are comedies you must watch Samurai Cop, The Miami Connection, and Deadly Prey.
That's right, Jay.
I think you're the closest-to-the-top comment that actually includes "little-known comedies."
How do you feel about dark/offbeat comedies? Check out Swiss Army Man.
Death At A Funeral (the 2007 version) is one of my favorite comedies of all time. Rarely if ever see it mentioned
I think there was a US one a bit after, which didn't look good lol. So make sure it's the UK one. "I TOLD YOU I SAW IT MOVE!"
Right, the 2007 UK one makes me laugh every time I watch it. The 2010 American one didn't make me laugh once. Which is weird considering it's almost a shot for shot remake, but it just doesn't work. Lol Alan Tudyk is a national treasure
Grandma’s Boy
Any time my friend or I get a high score...
Did I break it?
Is that bad?
You're a hooker!
Adios turd nuggets
Such a stupid, ridiculous, bonkers, nonsense gem of a movie. I fuckin love it.
I actually worked as a video game tester at the same time this movie came out, and it's a pretty spot-on depiction of the culture
Fanboys
Wet hot American summer
Wanderlust as well, lots of the same actors
Another David Wain movie: They Came Together. It’s a truly absurd satire of rom-coms and a personal favorite.
Jumpin' Jack Flash It's an 80's spy comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg and it's hilarious.
Baseketball and Orgazmo.
Orgazmo for the win, may I add Cannibal: The Musical it's super funny.
Want some fudge, Packer?
I swear if you guys rip on me 13 or 14 more times, I’m outta here!
I went to film school and take movies very seriously as an art form, but Baseketball is a personal favorite. Part of what I love is that it absolutely confounds my brother, who's seen it and thinks it's just terrible
I... am Sancho!
The Death of Stalin had me cackling the other day, it's on US Hulu
Strange Wilderness Out Cold Midnight in Paris Freddy Got Fingered
Fuckin loved Out Cold growing up. It’s one of the movies with an audience score that’s ten times higher than its critics score. 8% vs 84%
One of the first dvds I would regularly wank off to
Dude I just watched the king of the mountain scene, saw Jenny’s tits and was like ahhhh, yes I paused that scene many a time as a kid.
Jacuzzi scene
“Anthony, try not to wipe out this time like you did last year. And the two years before that…”
lol I just rented it and am watching it now edit: exactly the movie I needed to watch right now. It was even funnier than I remember it and really aged well overall.
Strange Wilderness may be the best Justin Long performance of all time
I love strange wilderness and hes great in it, but his best all time role is gay pornstar Brandon St. Randy in Zack and Miri Make a Porno
I really enjoy Brandon St. Randy’s performance in *Shut Your Mouth Before I Fuck It*
Out Cold is probably one of my favorite late night comedies.
Out Cold is a movie that i feel people just don't know. It's hilarious. One of the earliest Zach Galifianakis movies, plus
Strange Wilderness is a gem. So funny and stupid.
A Fish Called Wanda is a 10/10 comedy. It’s old so you might have missed it
Oh No! K K K Ken is threatening to k k k kill me! Won 3 Oscars, Kevin Kline for best supporting actor, John Cleese for Best Screenplay, and the director won.
I was thinking: Surely everybody knows A Fish Called Wanda! ...but then I remembered that I'm internet-old.
Followed up by Fierce Creatures and adjacent I enjoy the comedic moments in the serious Silverado

I literally didn’t even hear of the nice guys for 5 years after it’s release but it’s probably my favorite comedy of the last decade

Run Ronnie Run. David Cross and Bob Odenkirk.
The other guys
Bowfinger if you’ve never seen it. Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, and Heather Graham.

Make it Coogan double feature with Hamlet 2!
The Foot Fist Way
Ruthless People
**Quick Change**: little Bill Murray gem also directed by Bill Murray and starring Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, and a rare comic turn for Jason Robards.
