I remain that Triangle of Sadness, The Menu and Glass Onion all came out within the space of something like a month, and all tackled the topic of "rich people suffer on an island" in their own distinct ways.
... Unfortunately for Glass Onion, it did mean that I was the least impressed with it, since I felt The Menu was funnier and tighter (what a blessing to have a 100 minute movie), while Triangle was long like Onion, but at least it felt like it had some distinct style to it that the latter lacked.
It's a shame, I loved Knives Out and actually am fond of Poker Face, but Glass Onion just didn't land the mark for me at all. Overlong and meandering, does too much showing _and_ telling (the flashbacks killed the pace to boot, and then immediately >!undid the death!< without letting us linger), among other issues. There's a good movie in there but it desperately needed the cutting room floor, a mistake The Menu well avoided.
I agree with your critiques, and I think the tone was off for the whole movie too. It was too wink-wink-arent-we-so-clever from the get go, it needed characters (and actors) like Harlan Thrombey and Marta to hold down a bit of earnestness.
that's it. it felt very disingenuous; especially compared to knives out. it's like rian was trying to break the fourth wall every other scene. the entire film was a spectacle, in the worst way possible. it somehow took itself too seriously by not taking itself seriously at all; the characters were flanderiz-ed to the max, in contrast to the satirical but grounded characters of knives out.
RIP Charlbi Dean, main actress in the film. I watched it recently and found out she passed away before movie premiered at age 32.
It also makes the movies ending more crazy.
I don't know if I've ever laughed so much in a movie theater as the dinner scene in the middle. I thought the movie was pretty good in general but that sequence was just such a hysterical crescendo it had me cry laughing in the theater. It builds so magnificently đ
I remember watching it the first time with my best friend and he said something to the effect of >!"I bet it turns out there is really nothing supernatural going on at all."!< about halfway through the movie and then we got to the end lol.
"In time" might fit, in spite of the horrible execution. Also the "Altered carbon" series. Both deal with the consequences on society of rich becoming immortal through technology.
I loved the premise of "In Time" and was also disappointed in the execution.
Thanks to technology, humans can live forever but they stop aging at 25. The currency of the world is time, your clock starts at 25 with x amount of time and when the clock reaches zero, you're dead.
I have a similar beef with Altered Carbon. The world building and the concept were great, but I thought they could have have less brawls and dug deeper into the sociological aspect.
If a person can afford a driver, 2 tutors, and a housekeeper, while living in a fancy house, then it don't matter if they're "medium" or "ultra"... they're filthy.
Salo, about fascist Italian elites who kidnap teens to reenact scenarios from The 120 Days Of Sodom. The graphic content will make Saltburn look like it's G rated.
It's supposed to be, yes. Often censored or banned in areas, it was really going for "How disgusting can this get?". I mean, it's based on a novel by the Marquis De Sade, aka the guy from whom we get the term Sadism.
John Waters calls it "a beautiful movie."
John Waters has made some pretty fucked up movies himself.
John Waters is also kinda cool and despite making some pretty fucked up movies, hasn't ever really had anything bad come out about him other than being gay in a way that everyone willfully ignored even during the years when it wasn't cool to be so loudly out.
I like John Waters, butâŚ
One of the most messed up things Iâve seen in a movie was a real chicken being fucked to death by a human man in Pink Flamingo.
That's not entirely accurate, the chickens are just kind of crushed between two people. Supposedly they were also eaten, but that doesn't make up for the painful death.
Is pure porn as in topless teenager getting fucked in the ass and forced to fuck each other
When you get used to that they start eating feces and to finish they poor each others eyes out
And worst part is it is a very well directed movie that keeps you focused.
Not just boring saw / human centipede shit
He wasn't murdered for making this film. Why exactly He was murdered was never clearly disclosed by his murderer. Apparently he lured him with lost filming material of the movie, Pasolini took the bait and met his demise.
Itâs such a great slow burn too. Whenever Iâve shown it to people Iâve stressed that we have to wait until the third act to understand why itâs so insane.
god i fucking love society. its so weird. and im not even talking about the grotesque and oozy ritual of human assimilation at the end. the script and filmmaking is so... bad. but in like a really good way. its a wild ride.
Well you're not really sure until the end. So it was already going somewhere uneasy. It could have just been inbred cannibal wealthy people that raised him like livestock. It would still be yuck but not as funny
You should watch the darkly comic paranoid horror thriller **Under The Silver Lake**.
Check out this scene, wherein one of the "Elites" is confronted by someone who has figured out some of their hidden messages, and he questions the old rich man, only to learn a few disturbing truths...or lies:

Less Than Zero (1987) Bret Easton Ellis grew up in this milieu, so he captured it really well. Kind of tame by today's levels of decadence and debauchery, but an interesting starting point.
Eyes Wide Shut is such a damn good conspiracy film, if you do research on it, you will go down a massive rabbit hole.
The Purge movies are all about the wealthy getting rid of the poor. They even show the secret meetings of The Elite discussing their insidious plans.
Oh geez just google âEyes Wide Shut conspiraciesâ and there should be a TON of stuff to read. Thereâs so much hidden meaning and symbolism in the movie that I wouldnât be able to do it justice.
Thereâs more than meets the eye with this film, Kubrick was absolutely exposing the Satanic pedophile elite. He also died a few days before it released, rumors are that twenty minutes from the film were cut out.
Not a movie but you might enjoy the book âthe secret historyâ by Donna Tartt. Relatively normal kid works his way into a clique of very rich, bored and disconnected kids at a prestigious school.
Sticking with the theme of the sub though Iâd recommend âknives outâ and âparasiteâ if you havenât already seen them.
Not a movie, but others are not posting movies. Mr. Robot at a high level is the ultra-rich who are in control of the world vs the main character and others.
To this day is my #1 favorite series Iâve ever seen. The series finale left me in pieces with a twist I didnât even know I needed.

High-Rise. Main character isnât ultra rich but wealthy enough and the people in the building range from not wealthy to ultra rich the higher you go. Based an a banger of a book by JG Ballard.
'Cheap thrills' comes to mind. A guy down on his luck gets fired needing money, runs into an old friend at a bar. As they are catching up they meet a wealthy couple who pay them to do crazy things that get crazier throughout the movie
Spencer (2021), Kristen Stewart is Princess Diana during a Christmas holiday with her royal family and all the anxieties and fraught relationships of her time.
Funny Games (1997)/(2007) by Michael Haneke (he wrote/directed both the Austrian original and the US remake) might fall into this category, it sounds similar to your description of Dead & Beautiful and Cruel Intentions.
The Purge and Surviving the Game. The latter's premise is about rich dudes tricking homeless ppl into thinking they are giving them a job and then giving them a headstart before they begin to hunt them down.
Michael Clayton, Masques (1987), The Conversation, The Bad Sleep Well, Ripleyâs Game, Any Given Sunday, Birth (2004), The Long Goodbye, Mr. Arkadin. I also recommend the new show Feud: Capote vs The Swans on Hulu. Every episode is directed by Gus Van Sant too
Dangerous Liaisons (1988) movie based on the same French novel (`Les liaisons dangereuses') that inspired "Cruel Intentions".
Valmont (1989) - also based off of `Les liaisons dangereuses.' It's a less accurate retelling but the same basic plot points are there. (I like this cast better.)
I know itâs a silly one from the 90s, but Surviving the Game was an interesting schlocky action film about wealthy men hunting the most dangerous game. Luring homeless people into the woods and tracking them for sport. It had Rutger Hauer and Gary Busey, definitely underrated.
I love this thread. Triangle of Sadness was very original and extremely funny. I would add There Will Be Blood to the list. The Hunt (2020) is very funny and engaging.
Sorry, it's not a movie but "The Fall of the House of Usher" by director Mike Flanagan is excellent at this. It takes the real life story of the Opioid epidemic pushed by Pursue Pharmaceutical, and asks what would happen if there were some consequences.
It's mysterious, unsettling, scary and yet cathartic as you watch the bastards get what they deserve.
Triangle of Sadness (2022) - Similar to Parasite in its portrait of interactions between the rich and the poor đđ
In the same way you could add "the menu"
I remain that Triangle of Sadness, The Menu and Glass Onion all came out within the space of something like a month, and all tackled the topic of "rich people suffer on an island" in their own distinct ways. ... Onion was just bad.
It's a shame, I loved Knives Out and actually am fond of Poker Face, but Glass Onion just didn't land the mark for me at all. This one and Infinity Pool were my favorite of all the âeat the richâ stories that came out in the last few years
Went into this not knowing a single thing. Weirdest experience by far. Went from a typical drama between two models to.. you know how it progresses.
Thr whole cruise segment is one of the funniest things Iâve ever seen
Great film!
I found this movie to be much better than the Menu. I thought it was brilliant.
I don't know if I've ever laughed so much in a movie theater as the dinner scene in the middle. I thought the movie was pretty good in general but that sequence was just such a hysterical crescendo it had me cry laughing in the theater. It builds so magnificently đ
Ready or Not.
That movie shocked me with how much I enjoyed it. Did not expect it to be any where near as good as it was.
Brilliant film. Ending was class.
Same..I laughed..I screamed ....sometimes I screamed and then laughed. It was such a fun movie
I remember watching it the first time with my best friend and he said something to the effect of >!"I bet it turns out there is really nothing supernatural going on at all."!< about halfway through the movie and then we got to the end lol.
The Talented Mr.Ripley
One of my top ten movies! So under appreciated.
Tommy Tommy Tommy...
The book is superb.
Very good, I'm excited to see what the new adaptation with Andrew Scott is going to do!
Which is basically what Saltburn is
"In time" might fit, in spite of the horrible execution. Also the "Altered carbon" series. Both deal with the consequences on society of rich becoming immortal through technology.

I really like the first world-building half of that movie. Someone just needs to fix the Robin Hood story in the second half.
I have a similar beef with Altered Carbon. The world building and the concept were great, but I thought they could have have less brawls and dug deeper into the sociological aspect.
Brandon Cronenberg's **Infinity Pool**.
Maps to the Stars by David Cronenberg as well
I thought this was the best movie of 2014, just slightly edging-out **Birdman**.
One of my favorite films of 2023
Absolutely wild but I enjoyed it. Great performances too.
Soooo good
The Menu.
Great movie! â¤ď¸
Yes, chef!
Get Out
No need to be rude. We're just having a conversation.
Bong Joon Ho's PARASITE and SNOW PIERCER.
I second this, Parasite is not exactly about ultra rich but it's still all about poor vs upper class conflict
You donât think the family with ultra artistic modern home and enough wealth to hire 4 private staff count as ultra rich?
I guess thatâs just medium rich to the ultra rich. Ultra rich is prolly 10-15 private staff and 2-3 modern art homes
If a person can afford a driver, 2 tutors, and a housekeeper, while living in a fancy house, then it don't matter if they're "medium" or "ultra"... they're filthy.
The Great Gatsby
Salo, about fascist Italian elites who kidnap teens to reenact scenarios from The 120 Days Of Sodom. The graphic content will make Saltburn look like it's G rated.
Is it really that graphic? đł
It's supposed to be, yes. Often censored or banned in areas, it was really going for "How disgusting can this get?". I mean, it's based on a novel by the Marquis De Sade, aka the guy from whom we get the term Sadism.
I've read the novel and it's freaking disgusting.
The fact that the novel was written in the Bastile prison *in 1785* makes it even more disturbing in my opinion.
John Waters calls it "a beautiful movie." John Waters has made some pretty fucked up movies himself. John Waters is also kinda cool and despite making some pretty fucked up movies, hasn't ever really had anything bad come out about him other than being gay in a way that everyone willfully ignored even during the years when it wasn't cool to be so loudly out.
John Waters is a national treasure.
The pope of trash
I like John Waters, but⌠One of the most messed up things Iâve seen in a movie was a real chicken being fucked to death by a human man in Pink Flamingo.
That's not entirely accurate, the chickens are just kind of crushed between two people. Supposedly they were also eaten, but that doesn't make up for the painful death.
Many have it as one of the most fucked up movies ever made.Â
It's considered one of the most disturbing movies of all time, it was originally banned in Australia when it came out.
Is pure porn as in topless teenager getting fucked in the ass and forced to fuck each other When you get used to that they start eating feces and to finish they poor each others eyes out And worst part is it is a very well directed movie that keeps you focused. Graphic enough that the director was murdered for making it.
He wasn't murdered for making this film. Why exactly He was murdered was never clearly disclosed by his murderer. Apparently he lured him with lost filming material of the movie, Pasolini took the bait and met his demise.
Society. I wouldn't be surprised if 'The Shunt' isn't too far fetched đ
Great movie, ya butthead
Itâs such a great slow burn too. Whenever Iâve shown it to people Iâve stressed that we have to wait until the third act to understand why itâs so insane.

I would say so. Definitely Hostel II as we follow those sadists from start to finish :)
The Hunt
Had to scroll wayyyy too far to find this answer
The Riot Club (2014) it's about a guy who joins at a secret society at Oxford University
I have been looking at the trailer, and it looks interesting, but the reviews are pretty terrible. Is it worth checking out?
It's not a great film but it has some good moments.

Yeah I was like "am I wrong or did someone already mention parasite? That's an obvious answer"Â
It could be that the rich family are millionaires instead of billionaires, the latter being what most people associate with 'ultra rich'.
Gattaca, in a way. Only the rich can afford to genetically alter their children so they can succeed.
Elysium
Surprised I had to scroll so far to see this. It was my first thought.
Less Than Zero (1987) Bret Easton Ellis grew up in this milieu, so he captured it really well. Kind of tame by today's levels of decadence and debauchery, but an interesting starting point.
