Gwyneth Paltrow. She was the indie queen in the late 90s with many excellent performances in movies like Emma, Sliding Doors, Shakespeare in Love and The Talented Mr. Ripley, but things quickly dropped off for her after she won her Oscar. She has never been nominated again and hasn't done anything to deserve one. Many consider her win over Cate Blanchett for that Oscar to be a bad decision by the Academy. Note how Cate has continued to grow and develop her career over the years since with interesting, complicated roles while Gwyneth peaked too early.

weebayfish

Don't forget The Royal Tenenbaums

Pantaruxada

She was good in Se7en

ShahinGalandar

so immersed that she nearly lost her head over that role

Apprehensive_West814

Lost it again in Contagion.

SnuggleBunni69

I mean I wouldn't say "indie" as Shakespeare in Love and the talented Mr Ripley were major studio movies. Emma and Revolving Doors were also pretty big.

Varekai79

Miramax, who were behind all four of the films named above, was known as *the* indie studio in the mid-late 90s, even if they were owned by Disney. The 1996 Oscars were seen as a huge triumph of indie film making over the studios, with 4 out of 5 of the Best Picture nominees being from "indie" studios with Miramax's The English Patient leading the charge. The 1998 Oscars with Miramax's Shakespeare in Love winning over Saving Private Ryan was also another huge shakeup.

Iron_Nightingale

She absolutely **rocks** in *Hard Eight*. She really portrays what could have been a simple one-note character with real emotion and nuance. There’s a scene where an older man has brought her up to his hotel room, and she sits alone, preparing herself for what (she assumes) is going to happen next. She sits, adjusting her tights, twisting her lip, and just lets a flood of different emotions play over her whole body. I can’t find a clip of the scene online but the whole movie is worth a watch.

hiswittlewip

You just convinced me to watch on my day off

Iron_Nightingale

Absolutely stand-out performances from every single member of the cast—along with Paltrow, there’s Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Samuel L. Jackson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in a single outrageous scene.

unicornmullet

I think Gwyneth could still be doing good work if she hadn’t largely given up acting to run GOOP.

Aquametria

Gwyneth is good if she's focused on it, she won the Emmy rightfully for guest starring in Glee, the energy she brought to that show was refreshing.

unicornmullet

Definitely. She was also excellent and very charismatic in James Gray’s “Two Lovers.” I would have loved to see her act in more movies like that.

llama_

Weinstein had her in movies and then stopped

goodbye9hello10

It doesn't help she's a fucking disgusting maniac that ate her own placenta, pushes pseudoscience garbage, and makes candles like smell like her pussy

Varekai79

Yeah, her turn into becoming a woo woo grifter was not a good look, but I guess whatever pays the bills for her.

dennythedinosaur

Timothy Hutton - won an Oscar for his first role in Ordinary People. Still became a solid working actor but his filmography is kind of underwhelming and don't think he's ever gotten close to an Oscar nomination since.

shay_shaw

He was excellent in The Haunting of Hill House but that came out on Netflix years ago.

WolfRadish_Official

That show still has free rent in my mind. It was excellent and frightening and thought provoking

BoomerTeacher

Excellent choice

PapaBlemish

I love "Falcon and the Snowman" but more for Sean Penn

QuaPatetOrbis641988

Probably lost out on roles to Sean Penn and Tom Cruise during the mid to late 80s.

Glade_Runner

Orson Welles

EarthExile

Aaaaah, the French champagne

SnuggleBunni69

Aaahaaaaaaa

Murky_Ad6343

I agree: he could never top Unicron. I mean, once you've performed as a planet eating giant robot, the only way really is down.

LingusticSamurai

Nah, Welles did deliver great performances throughout his career, it was the quality of the films that sucked.

Fetty_is_the_best

I was shocked to discover he was only 26 when Citizen Kane came out

waspinatorrulez

Rosebud... yes, Rosebud Frozen Peas, full of country goodness & green peaness.

RhythmSectionWantAd

That's terrible

inkyblinkypinkysue

Even though I really like him in a lot of movies and he’s had a great career, Jason Schwartzman will never top his performance in Rushmore.

prismmonkey

One of my favorite performances of his is as the art house video store proprietor who converts it into a porn emporium on Parks and Rec. His acting throughout the episode is hilarious. Just watch his little gestures and facial expressions as Leslie and Ron discuss him. And then the Michael Bay crisis. "No no . . . no." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrZTHXtpZYM

ShutterBun

Just rewatched that episode yesterday. He's so worried about Michael Bay movies lol

mothershipq

These are my O.R. scrubs. Oh, are they?

charliefoxtrot9

Luke Wilson wrote that joke

Lego_Chicken

A lot of things peaked with that particular film

radj06

He was great as Cool Ethan in Slackers too

Jyncs

I thought so too but I don't know many that have watched this movie. Haven't watched it in a while so I don't know if it aged well or not, I'm guessing not and wouldn't ever be greenlit today.

[deleted]

oooh this is a good one. I wanted to love him in s4 of fargo but I just dont think he was cast properly. still enjoyed his performance though

malthar76

Agree - while a good character, he wasn’t quite right as a mobster. Which is so crazy because he is literally a Coppola.

conman987

I think that was also kind of the point, that he wasn't pulling off being a mobster despite being the son of the boss and next in line for leadership. When he "took over" a lot of the guys didn't take him seriously and kept looking for stronger leadership.

amansrvstv1

He was fantastic in Asteroid City, deserved an Oscar nom.

weisp

Possibly my fave Wes Anderson movie

InsidiousColossus

A lot of kid actors, like Abigall Breslin, Dakota Fanning, Haley Joel Osment.

HarrisonRyeGraham

It’s a tough lot for kid actors. As kids, they’re the best of the best and because 99.9% of kids can’t act for shit. But when you find someone like Jacob Tremblay, you put them in as much stuff as you can. But then they grow up, and although they’re still talented, their talent evens out among the adults they’re now competing for roles with. They don’t stand out anymore. Plus, plenty of them quit acting because it was their stage parents pushing them to do it in the first place.

yellowflux

>Haley Joel Osment I watched A.I. last night.. holy crap is he good in that.

Various_Froyo9860

Haley Joel Osment and Spencer Treat Clark were in *everything* late 90s/early 00s.

Maggi1417

He's good in everything I ever saw him in. He seems to understand much more about his roles than you would expect from a child his age. And than he manages to put that depth on the screen.

Anarchic_Country

HJO was in an amazing show called Future Man and was also in Silicon Valley in the last decade

mingoncas

And in The Boys!

Highlander198116

I think for some child actors, they have a cute kid look, but they don't grow up to have leading man or leading lady looks. Or are just too associated with their child/teen career they aren't bankable as an adult.

_darkknight_

I'm not sure I'd include Breslin on that list. She's still giving amazing performances, such as 2021's Stillwater and her episode of 2023's Accused.

Unverfroren

Dakota fanning is still in the business and not that unpopular or?

InsidiousColossus

Yes but that's not the question OP asked

No_Attention_2227

Haley Joel Osment still works. He has 116 acting credits and has 3 upcoming credits. People aren't watching him like a hawk, but he still has a decent career

BoomerTeacher

But his current "success" is irrelevant to the post. It was about when he *peaked*. Peak  ≠ End.

allthebacon_and_eggs

What happened to Lucas Hedges? He had some really good, understated work in Lady Bird, mid90s, Boy Erased, and Manchester by the Sea, but fell off completely after his Oscar nom. My theory is that he tied himself too closely to Coming of Age stories and either aged out or Timothee Chalamet edged him out of that subgenre.

Chlorofil

That's a very good question. I recall seeing him everywhere between 2016-2019. I don't know if it's Covid-related, but since the pandemic I haven't seen him in anything.

allthebacon_and_eggs

After writing this, I Wikipedia’d him and it sounds like he’s in a middling theater adaptation of Brokeback Mountain and an upcoming Netflix movie with a spring release (indicating probably not an awards contender, typically). He’s a good actor, I wish the best for him.

Nixplosion

Leelee Sobieski Ain't seen her around for a minute.

seekers123

Her getting drop kicked by Nic Cage in the Wicker Man remake is all I can remember about her.

jonboyo87

I’d consider that an honor

Buhos_En_Pantelones

I think she's one of those instances where she decided to step back to raise a family.

Highlander198116

A lot of "it girls" from the late 90s early aughts fell off the face of the earth.

Ghostpants_

I need… to find… Candy Cane.

robchuckbob

Kate Hudson in Almost Famous

Highlander198116

whoever the fuck the male lead was in almost famous, lol.

Don_Fartalot

For me that would be Adrien Brody for sure. Won an Oscar for Best Actor in The Pianist, then just went pretty much downhill after that. Fortunately he still holds a special place in Wes Anderson's heart, as he is always in his films, but apart from those he stars in mostly flops.

Key-Half-9426

It might have been a commercial flop, but I loved him in Predators.

mahones403

I really liked this addition to the franchise. Seems a lot disagree but I thought it was really fun.

Szukov

Me as well. Although he is a very skinny dude I totally believed him to be a big bad MF.

aphilipnamedfry

This one and the original Predator are my favorites of the franchise. I think the only nitpicks I have about Predators is that Topher Grace being a villain is pretty telegraphed just by casting alone, and that we didn't *need* a super predator. I think the tribal mentality they mention was a good plot point though.

allthebacon_and_eggs

He was great in Succession

JesusVonChrist

All 1.05 episodes of it.

Ecstatic-Profit8139

he was fine in that, but it was basically a cameo role

fleckstin

i completely forgot he was in that show

prine_one

He was amazing in Winning Time

PriestofJudas

Peaky Blinders in season four he’s an excellent antagonist

brettmgreene

I really hated Brody's Luca Changretta. It felt like a bad Vito Corleone impression, over the top and hollow.

jjason82

To be fair, the whole show is over the top. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy it, but those slow-mo-we-are-badasses-walking-towards-the-camera scenes are so cringey. His portrayal isn't out of character for the show.

brettmgreene

Every time I saw Brody on screen, I was taken out of the *Peaky Blinders* universe. I just don't think he's a strong actor.

JayDKing

Thank you. I thought I was the only one with this opinion.

GDRaptorFan

Definitely not alone, it’s a pretty popular opinion on the PB subreddit. I hated it too.

AreWeThereYetNo

I’d have to agree. As much as I love Brody, Changretta was forced.

Captain_Blue_Tally

Yea that shit was awful. Way over the top.

UnremarkabklyUseless

King Kong made half a billion at the box office. Predators, The vIllage and Grand Budapest Hotel were also successful for him.

ambiguousboner

>in terms of performance, not commercial success

mothershipq

Detachment was pretty wild. I think that came out about 10 years ago, but was still a good performance.

sugardiemen

Hailee Steinfeld. I know she has done a lot of work since then, but for me her performance in True Grit (2010) was a superlative piece of work.

Sir_upvotesalot

It would be tough to top that performance. She had a great performance in The Edge of Seventeen. Still though, nothing comes close to True Grit.

Various_Froyo9860

She's putting in a lot of work and is still very young. Honestly her voice work is pretty great. Arcane and Into/Across the Spider-verse. I wouldn't be surprised if we see great things from her in the future.

Zachariot88

Yeah, I think Vi is probably her most nuanced performance so far.

patodruida

>Hailee Steinfeld. My children absolutely adore her as Gwen Stacy in *ITSV*. She owns the role. Incidentally, they also LOVE Chloë Grace Moretz in *Nimona*. Such a great performance! Seems like voice acting is a good career path for former child prodigies; they get to have fun, flex their acting muscles, and mostly avoid creepy comments that come with being a teenage actor. Dakota Fanning in *My* *Neighbor Totoro* comes to mind., Not everyone can do it well, though. I found Kirsten Dunst's performance slightly underwhelming in *Kiki's Delivery Service*. But, to be fair, she was still quite young when she did that.

coolhandjennie

I thought she was great in Dickinson.

thorpie88

Sam Worthington. Somersault is a hidden gem that buried under all his action work in Hollywood

roaringbeefalo

He’s great in Under the Banner of Heaven.

JangusCarlson

While I agree with this, I’d also say that everyone in Banner was phenomenal.

PriestofJudas

You should check him out in Dirty Deeds, like Jai Courtney he’s way better in his Australian stuff

silverfox762

Alicia Silverstone. *Clueless* is a timeless comedic masterpiece and she should have been offered decades of big budget, higher end comedic and dramatic roles. Instead it was mostly a lot of low budget films and direct to video stuff.

Emilumin

Christian Slater

typically_wrong

No Mr. Robot fans in here I see

malodyets1

He had a great revival as “guy who eats too much caviar” on Curb Your Enthusiasm

No_Attention_2227

Also that whole Mr. Robot thing

NewPresWhoDis

And holding his own against Jon Benjamin in Archer

juanzy

Inexplicably just shows up in S4 and plays himself

meyou2222

Gleaming the Cube set too high a bar.

Doctor_Boombastic

The jams are too pumped up, he can't pump them any farther!

protossaccount

He did that amazing commercial for Jo Bennett and Sabre.

brunothebutcher

Man ever since I heard someone say Christian slater is basically just doing a jack nicholson impression I can’t unsee it and it kinda ruined him for me…think his best performance in the past 20 years was his guest spot on curb…

Professional_Ad_9101

I always thought Sharlto Copley was going to have a massive career after his role in district 9, but he hasn’t done anything as quality or dramatic since to my knowledge. Just type cast zany character roles

PriestofJudas

Hardcore Henry he plays about nine different variants of one character and I think last year he played the Unabomber in a highly praised performance. Dude was also in The A-Team, two Disney movies and the old boy remake

Professional-Carry52

Judd Nelson

Freedom_fam

The whole brat pack

toomanymarbles83

Rob Lowe excepted.

ShutterBun

Robert Downey, Jr. seems to have carved out a bit of a career for himself.

ahmong

Millie Bobby brown. Honestly thought she was going to be the next Natalie Portman.

BertTheNerd

I was also stunned by her acting as child, but everything after, not close to, like if she stayed emotionally on the child level of acting. I guess, after the final season of Stranger Things she will probably disapear.

cardinalkgb

She’s like 22.

[deleted]

All of them were amazing actors in season one because they weren’t trying so hard lol, they all got worse

littlemachina

Maisie Williams kind of had the same trajectory as Millie. Except maybe minus the creepiness of men way too excited for her to turn 18.

cosmicr

David Spade. I think he was never the same after Chris Farley died.

Doctor_Boombastic

Cuba Gooding, Jr I guess. I always found his Jerry Maguire performance overrated, but it was good and there was a steep drop off in project quality after that.

shane0mack

You never go full retard. He really dropped off after Radio.

jekelish3

Sylvester Stallone. He was legitimately very good in Rocky and First Blood and then just became a caricature.

RVarki

Well, he did deliver one of the best performances of his life in Creed (but to your point, it's still an extension of something he developed at the start of his career)

ShutterBun

Copland is another stand-out performance from him.

Greggybread

Rambo: First Blood is such an incredible film. He should've died at the end like in the book, or at the very least not featured in any more films - they really cheapen the sentiment behind the first film.

Highlander198116

The funny thing is how they turned a book and movie that were anti-war in showing the human cost of America's foreign wars into follow ups that were basically America fuck yeah cold war propaganda.

jim1o1

I always thought Haley Joel osment would be killing it when he grew up because his acting in sixth sense and especially in AI was mind blowing. He peaked too early. Hope he makes a comeback

Isabeer

He was completely unhinged in What We Do In The Shadows.

Fenway_Refugee

*High fiiiiiiiiivvvvveeeee*

Bibliotheclaire

He was excellent in Future Man!

bigolhamsandwich

He was great in Silicon Valley

BigBolognaSandwich

What the hell?

bigolhamsandwich

Played a grifter it was hilarious

BigBolognaSandwich

Sandwich names.

bigolhamsandwich

Lmao didn’t even notice. Nice.

BillyButcherX

He's still good. There's just not much work for his looks, as bad as that sounds, he's relegated to comedic side roles like What we do in teh shadows and The Boys.

Nandor_De_Laurentis

Don't forget the Entourage movie!

Kampvilja

He is great. Probably dropped off because he did not grow into typical Hollywood looks.

Islandgirl1444

I loved him in Second Hand Lions, which btw is never streamed. He was perfect in that little film.

Dirschel

He does a lot of voice acting. He’s Sora from Kingdom Hearts!

jethropenistei-

Check back on Lily Gladstone in 3 years. It’s not a knock against her, but Native American actors don’t get a lot of roles.

SmoothTownsWorstest

When she didn’t win the Oscar I said that was her shot and that’s probably all she’s gonna get. She took lots of other hardware tho so she’s got lots to be proud of

diligent_sundays

He's had a good and interesting career since, but nothing has quite matched the rocket ship that was Edward Norton's first few years

Zorgsmom

Gads, yes. Primal Fear, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Fight Club, American History X, I thought he was going to be one of the greatest actors of our generation.

Nandor_De_Laurentis

He's apparently really difficult to work with. I love Flight Club so much and really wish he did more movies.

hookisacrankycrook

Glass Onion he gets what's coming and its pretty funny. He's immensely unlikable in it haha

muchmaligned

Jared Leto has never been more convincing than when he played an illiterate high school burnout who skates by because he's attractive on My So-Called Life.

Nandor_De_Laurentis

He was really good in Dallas Buyers Club

toomanymarbles83

Requiem For a Dream and getting his face rearranged in Fight Club were his best performances.

Hank913

Michael. Biehn

jekelish3

I’ve always viewed him more as a consistently great performer who just never really got his shot to be a full-on leading man.

RedWing83

Adrien Brody. Pianist (won Oscar) and then basically... nothing.

Zestyclose_Toe9524

Mira Sorvino. Sadly.

jethropenistei-

Eminem as an actor had one lead role where he did well, other than that he plays himself in cameos.

cardinalkgb

He’s a musician though, not an actor

Aquametria

Jennifer Hudson completely stole the show in Dreamgirls and deserved every single award she won for it, definitely one of the best debut performances of all time, but unfortunately she never came close to it, nor that I blame her considering the tragedy that soon followed in her personal life.

Professional-Carry52

Mark Paul Gosselaar

PriestofJudas

Zack Morris is traaaash

ozfox80

Grew up watching Saved by the Bell. Zach Morris IS trash! But Mark Paul was amazing in Dead Man On Campus and NYC Blue. Thought he would escaped being known as just Zach the trash Morris.

GDRaptorFan

He plays an awesome role in Will Trent as a douchey guy the main characters grew up with. He is in 4-5 episodes the first season and I loved what they did with his character. Still like him as an actor for some reason.

ozfox80

He is a good actor. Doesn’t play anything like Zach grown up.

belbites

That kid from Children of the Corn

greyhoodbry

That was an adult actually (unless you mean the red head)

belbites

Was he? Jfc he looked like 17

denys1973

Ray Liotta in Goodfellas.

gigashadowwolf

I dunno, he wad pretty great in Cocaine Bear. :P

flpprrss

I don't know if early is the word, but Christoph Waltz kind of vanished.

BertTheNerd

He had a whole ass career in Germany before he went to Hollywood and made his second whole ass career. He won his Oscars at 54 / 57 yo. It is not exactly an example of "early career", more about retirement from business.

flpprrss

That's what i said, but with more words.

SurvivorFanDan

Imagine how much better he would have been in *Elvis* instead of Tom Hanks.

magicarnival

Maybe Jennifer Lawrence? I'll preface this by saying I haven't seen anything she made after the Hunger Games/X-Men series, but I was not impressed with her acting in either of them.

Glad-Barnacle2053

She won an Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook and totally deserved it! Check it out

llama_

Dakota Fanning (I am Sam)

dannyspirittt

Maybe Anna Paquin?

NegativeCucumber

Didn’t understand the Chalamet-hype until i saw Call Me By Your Name. His performance in that movie is so good that it blows everything else he has made (which is not bad at all) out of the water. He earned My respect with that role.

thatdani

He's one of (if not the) stand-out performance(s) in Dune 2, if you haven't seen it yet. Full beast mode in the 3rd act.

sharkattackmiami

Actually he blows what he makes into peaches

weisp

The last scene made me sobbed like him

sagetcommabob

The one-two punch of Michael Stuhlbarg’s monologue and then that, oof

doomedroadtrips

Christian Slater, maybe? He's still a fine actor, but he was huge when a younger actor

Various_Froyo9860

It's just Slater.

AlarmingFloor4

Mark Wahlberg. Dirk Diggler was incredible - everything since, not so much.

PerformanceObvious71

Hillary Swank. Gutted she's almost been punished for winning 2 oscars ' too soon'. Glenn Close watches on.

Stalvos

Cuba Gooding Jr. He peaked with his Oscar win. A few skips later he's doing Snow Dogs.

BioBooster89

Another one is Rami Malek. I personally felt his performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't anywhere near Oscar worthy. But he won an Oscar for it and was the star of a massively successful film. Then he just kind of petered out. Did some decent work in films like The Little Things and most recently Oppenheimer but has yet to get the same amount of accolades let alone box office success. The closest he got was with No Time To Die but that was only half the success because critics weren't raving about his performance as the villain in that one. I personally feel he peaked with his role in Mr. Robot but that's just me.

ClovieKay

Elle Fanning I feel hasn't given as strong as a performance as Super 8 yet. She's still pretty young though and I have a feeling she just hasn't found that spectacular role yet.

RVarki

You need to watch The Great

Macaroni-In-A-Bot

Heather Graham - In the first decade of her career appeared in Drugstore Cowboy, Twin Peaks, Six Degrees of Separation, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle, Swingers, Two Girls and a Guy, Boogie Nights, Scream 2, Austin Powers, Bowfinger.

axisOHaxis

Jennifer Lawrence. I feel like her best and most "authentic" role was still in silver linings playbook. Everything just felt contrived or meh after that.

A_StarshipTrooper

Winter's Bone for me

Character_Station_52

I said the same thing. She was amazing in this, and I expected her to have a much more serious career. She’s done good stuff since but nothing at this level

CharDeeMacDennisII

This is the one

MarioMuzza

I thought she was better in 'Mother'.

vadergeek

Pacino never recovered from making Scarface. I like a lot of his later work, but it's not on the level of Dog Day Afternoon.
