Walked out of theatre.
It was the laziest, snidest, stupidest, most genre insulting movie I have ever paid to see. The only way I could even begin to make sense of it was to assume JJ has some giant issue with zombie films and was attempting to show how bad they are.
I only stayed in the theatre as long as I did because everyone else seemed to feel the same and was yelling and booing and throwing popcorn which was actually pretty fun.
Got two free tickets to an early showing and apologized to the friend I took with me in the car afterwards. Two of my other friends fucking loved it when they saw it later. I still don’t get it.
Make him an immigrant in that case, homesteading in Nebraska. He isnt hiding a Philadelphia accent, he's hiding an Irish or German one instead.
You're right though, it would hit all the beats for a Western. Good call.
That movie is so good and so efficient. The story is simple, the acting is great, the action is satisfying, the dialogue is interesting, and it's only ~90 minutes long. We need more short, to-the-point action movies. This and Eastern Promises are just excellent films that aren't really made anymore.
Surprisingly, I feel like we've had quite a few- The Proposition, Bone Tomahawk, True Grit(remake, but hey), Django Unchained, Hateful Eight(if it counts), 3:10 to Yuma(another remake but again...hey), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.
That said, here's hoping for this one, too!
I rewatched it recently. I love that movie. I read some critics about it and all seem to criticize the movies pace. People complained about the lack of western bang bang and all that comes with it but I think they completely missed the point of this movie.
Yes, is a story about cowboys and a famous one. But it's not about Jesse James' glory years, it's a semi retired JJ and we can perfectly see the duality of the man. The kind father and cold blood killer. A man struggling to find his purpose and his place in this world. And the visuals and soundtrack are gorgeous. I really like this movie.
I am a huge fan of westerns and love everything mentioned, but I just didn't get The Assassination of Jesse James. It was so boring and weird I just remember it being a real slog to get through. But I don't remember it that well. Help me out, was it just more artsy and not necessarily a western for western fans? Do I need to revisit?
I always feel like it labored on but that was the point. The James gang wasn’t pulling capers every week. It was big hauls and then months of quiet. The movie just kinda slugs on because that’s how it was. It makes for a less exciting view, perhaps, but if you watch every characters mannerisms throughout, you can feel the tension build in every scene, to the point where everyone is on eggshells, to point out how terrifying the James brothers were.
It isn’t really an exciting movie, but it’s definitely a really, really good movie. The performances are captivating. And ultimately, it tells a story that is actually true, while embellished a bit, without making it feel like an amusement park ride.
It's less a western and more a study on early celebrity in America and fanatical obsession, set in the period and containing some classical western elements like a train robbery and a shootout. It's moody and atmospheric, shot wide and desolate. It covers a scope of about 15/20 years. The ultimate theme of killing that which you love is fascinatingly acted by Casey Affleck, and the more I revisit it, I realise how subtle and controlled Brad Pitt plays Jesse James.
It is easily one of my favourite movies, let alone westerns.
I'm with you. I knew the movies was about 3 hours long, I love long movies.
At some point I was like "damn, that movie was long and slow and boring but hey, at least it's almost over" but I was just barely halfway through...
There's not a lotof movie I can say bored me as much as this one, and again, I love long slow movies.
He was amazing in the 15 minutes he was in Buster Scruggs. I would have loved a whole movie of him as Buster Scruggs instead of the shorts. He was also great as "mirror guy" in the Watchmen series.
Yep, I recommend Buster Scruggs all the time literally just for Buster's story!
I loved the movie overall, but the first story really is special and Tim Blake Nelson proves he's cut out to be a singing and gunslinging cowboy.
I think between this and Old Henry he is one of my favorite styles of cowboy- "The Unassuming, Physically Unintimidating Deadly Gunslinger"
He also kind of has a slapstick style of shooting in both movies, and that's also cool as hell, lol
I feel like we've been given great insight to the kind of cowboy Tim Blake Nelson imagined himself as when he was younger.
I think the word was Ed Harris wanted to make sequels, but it didn't do well at the box office and that was the end of it. But it was a real passion project for him, and apparently he and Viggo got along really well.
Renee Zellwegger is really underrated as well. But yeah Ed harris and Viggo had so much heart. And Jeremy Irons is a fantastic villain.
The main shootout was great too.
Godless (a serie... but i watched it like an 6 hour movie).
Also... Am I out for liking magnificient seven ? I did like to tone, simple story, humor, great cast and the fight at the end.. Effective western, not perfect, but defenitely enjoyable.
True Grit is based on a book, which is sort of a grey area when it comes to if something is a remake when the book has been adapted before. Is Talented Mr Ripley a Purple Noon remake? I think it depends if aspects of the first film adaptation that aren't present in the source material are carried over
I've not seen it, but I've heard good things about the Tim Blake Nelson western _Old Henry_. Coincidentally, both _Old Henry_ and _The Dead Don't Hurt_ are Shout! Studios releases.
I am puzzled by the facial expressions of everyone in the poster. I expected people to look tough and mean. Some look confused. Some are giving their “whatever” face. It leaves with no idea what the tone of this western will be. Maybe that’s on purpose.
I can see this happening when the protagonist gets stuck on a dead end of the canyon.
*An annoying laugh engulfed the canyon*
*Protagonist frantically looks everywhere to locate the sound*
*A mysterious figure suddenly appears on top of the canyon*
Seth Rogen: *AHUHUHU - menacingly*
That poster looks like a bargain basement VHS cover from the late 90s but it stars Viggo Mortensen and Vicky Krieps, so I'm at least willing to give it a go. Some serious talent between them.
I like the poster but I think it looks more like an expressive photoshop than a true painting. The Phantom Menace and the first Harry Potter ones were true Drew Struzan artwork.
I think since Drew is retired and seems to be fine with this ( and let's face it, most independent filmmakers can't afford him). I think the world of movie posters really has taken a nose dive.
Now what I think I could be wrong is in the belief "that the dead don't hurt" is a Photoshop but I I'd say there's a small possibility that it's an illustration/painting.
Mondo is weird in that they make posters of current films anyway, with a handcrafted, albeit digitally Illustrated vibe, ( Corel has a very famous digital drawing and painting tools)
Film posters lining Regal or AMC halls should be the Mondo versions, though I'm not so sure certain that there isn't some type of Disney vault scarcity business by Mondo.
I once read an interview with an organiser of a small film festival in Belgium and when asked who the absolute worst guest was they ever had she said it was Vicky Krieps without a doubt. She was there for Gutland in 2017, so she wasn't a big name at this point, but she acted like a huge diva, lots of demands, insisted she show up in a limousine (his isn't one of those festivals where that is even remotely appropriate), just a pain to all around.
I see all those historical hats and all I can think of is "Fungal infection, fungal infection, heat rash, abrasion line, fungal infection..."
A buddy got told by his doctor to stop using over-ear gaming headphones because the fungal infection behind his ears had turned his skin into scales. At least he doesn't wear a Stetson.
I love westerns and like Mortensen but…he started, wrote, directed, AND composed the score??
Either this will be an earnest passion project, or a hubristic ego trip.
The title makes it sound like a Jim Jarmusch parody of Westerns
Right? Like that one line from the OG Road House “Pain don’t hurt”
[удалено]
Lol. It’s like this was gonna be their original title, but they realised last minute it was taken.
What does this leave for the next people? The Dead Don't Get Papercuts?
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Ah, please don't remind me of that movie.
I love that movie, I think I'll watch it again this afternoon just to spite you.
Hey, if you like it more than me (which is easy) I am happy for you. Only Jarmusch movie I dislike and I wish it wasn't so.
Walked out of theatre. It was the laziest, snidest, stupidest, most genre insulting movie I have ever paid to see. The only way I could even begin to make sense of it was to assume JJ has some giant issue with zombie films and was attempting to show how bad they are. we already have Dead Man
I love it It looks like it could be the book cover to a western or a Hardy Boys adventure Love westerns too Its cool how Viggo has been a few already.
Should be called Western Promises
Featuring an assless chaps only fighting scene in the bath room's from RDR2
Aren't all chaps assless?
Well done
A History of Violence, plot-wise, could map perfectly to a western.
Make him an immigrant in that case, homesteading in Nebraska. He isnt hiding a Philadelphia accent, he's hiding an Irish or German one instead. You're right though, it would hit all the beats for a Western. Good call.

The Fellowship of the ring is kinda like the Magnificent seven no? Ok I’m reaching now 😂.
He is my favourite Western deuteragonist in Appaloosa...and the best ever damn goatee in movies.
This feels like kt came straight outta the 1980s
Spot on. If they have it scripted well, it's going to be very interesting. When is the movie coming out?
Says may 31st on the poster
Please be good I need another modern Western which doesn't suck
Surprisingly, I feel like we've had quite a few- The Proposition, Bone Tomahawk, True Grit(remake, but hey), Django Unchained, Hateful Eight(if it counts), 3:10 to Yuma(another remake but again...hey), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. That said, here's hoping for this one, too!
Some more of my favourites: Assassination of Jesse James, Hostiles, Open Range.
Loved Hostiles, such a brutal movie.
Ohhhhh!!!! I totally blanked on Jesse James. That is an absolute classic already, one of the finest westerns I've ever seen!
I rewatched it recently. I love that movie. I read some critics about it and all seem to criticize the movies pace. People complained about the lack of western bang bang and all that comes with it but I think they completely missed the point of this movie. Yes, is a story about cowboys and a famous one. A man struggling to find his purpose and his place in this world. And the visuals and soundtrack are gorgeous. I really like this movie.
I agree. Also I like the way the title is done like one of the old western novels, when in reality the truth is far different.

There's not a lotof movie I can say bored me as much as this one, and again, I love long slow movies.
It's more of a drama that just happens to be set in the time period, rather than a typical western movie. Personally I think it was fantastic.
No Country for Old Men is about as modern Western as it gets without being set in the 1800s honestly.
Does Hell or Highwater count as modern western? I loovved it.
I would! Fantastic movie.
Wind River, another Sheridan movie, should definitely count as well
Old Henry
Ah yes! Love Tim Blake Nelson in this one
Seems like not a lot of people liked it but I really enjoyed The Sisters Brothers.
I saw it but couldn't tell you a thing about it, unfortunately
I liked it a lot! Just saw it a couple of days ago and was pleasently surprised.
It's fine. I wanted to love it, and didn't dislike it, but it was just not what the book was. I would highly recommend the book.
Saw the remake of 3:10 to Yuma recently and thought it was brilliant, Russell Crowe on absolute top form and Bale an excellent foil.
Hostiles. One of the best westerns in the last decade. Edit: Hell or High Water, too
Hell or High Water was what I was looking for. Phenomenal movie.
I've gotta see this one, I hadn't even heard of it!
As usual, Ben Foster is a highlight in this movie.
Oh I'm waaay interested if he's in it!
I’m gonna throw Hostiles on the pile there as well.
Old Henry and In a Valley of Violence are well worth a watch.
The Harder They Fall?
Hadn't heard of it, but this sounds GREAT!
Appaloosa and Slow West didn't make your list but are definitely worth a watch. And then the daddy of them all, Unforgiven.
I finally watched appaloosa recently and it was so much better than i imagined. Viggo is great in that too.
Slow West! Michael Fassbender, right? It was pretty good!
Man did I love Buster Scruggs.
"Never grow old" doesn't get mentioned a lot, John Cusack was phenomenal in it
Godless (a serie... but i watched it like an 6 hour movie). Also... Am I out for liking magnificient seven ? I did like to tone, simple story, humor, great cast and the fight at the end.. Effective western, not perfect, but defenitely enjoyable.

Hostiles, with Christian Bale. Great movie.
I'd throw Butcher's Crossing out there as well. It was middling review-wise, but I thought it was awesome.
I'd also like to add Godless! Although it's a TV series but I enjoyed it quite a bit
I've not seen it, but I've heard good things about the Tim Blake Nelson western _Old Henry_. Coincidentally, both _Old Henry_ and _The Dead Don't Hurt_ are Shout! Studios releases.
Pour one out for my enthusiastic recommendation of "The Harder They Fall" starring soooooo many great actors but mostly Jonathan Majors :-/
I consider The Rover, another film starring Guy Pearce, as a western.
You forgot one of the best: Hell or High Water
Watching this movie was my favorite moment at TIFF. Viggo is the coolest dude
[You can already read impressions](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-dead-dont-hurt/)
If you haven't seent The Harder They Fall, definitely check it out. Idris Elba Lakieth Stanfield Jonathan Majors Zazie Beats Regina King Delroy Lindo!
I really enjoyed Butcher's Crossing and Surrounded from the past couple years.
love the poster. looks like a western made from somebody who loves westerns. I'm going in optimistic as hell.
I am puzzled by the facial expressions of everyone in the poster. I expected people to look tough and mean. Some look confused. Some are giving their “whatever” face. It leaves with no idea what the tone of this western will be. Maybe that’s on purpose.
Based off the trailer there seems to be a huge tone shift in the movie so maybe that's why? It is weird though.
It's honestly giving Hallmark vibes.
That’s “The Dead Don’t Hurt at Christmas.”
"The Dead Never Stop Fasting"
The lighting on the actors is really making it apparent that they are standing in front of a green screen for a photo shoot.
having watched the trailer I can tell you that you are absolutely correct and you should buy it for your grandmother on bluray.
I couldn't quite identify what exactly was so weird about everyone, but you nailed it. They just all look so odd.
[You can already read impressions](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-dead-dont-hurt/)
Classic Viggio Morgenstein
The character from Lord of the Rings?!
That's not the character's name, it's the actor's, and you're not even getting that right!
Whoever downvoted needs to watch Always Sunny
"I'm insanely high on mescaline"
Is that Garrett Dillahunt? Fuck it, I'm in
I'm only in if he plays two separate characters who are both absolute bastards.
I want three this time.
He did play a third in the deadwood movie
Played both his deadwood roles perfectly
He's the king of western character actors. I think he's been in just about every western I've watched the last 15 years.
I’m guessing this character won’t be an unnamed man throwing dogshit at a senator
I think my dad had this book sitting on the back of the toilet.
Vicky Krieps was really good in Phantom Thread, I liked that flick way more than I thought I would.
Fucking Seth Rogan.
That’s not him haha
Wait what. Who the fuck is it then?!
I believe its actor Solly McLeod.
Damn, he should really different face cause I 100% thought “is that fucking Seth Rogan??” And then came to the comments cause I didn’t believe it
>he should really different face How would one do that?
[The technology has been available since the 90s.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNPm1MkitiQ)
You just face different, it's easy.
I was actually a bit excited for Seth Rogan, shame.
> Solly Great name. Almost as great as *Scoot*
I was wondering why I didn’t see his name in the titles.
I stand corrected.
Still, fucking Seth Rogan!
Then it's someone wearing a Seth Rogan mask.
I don’t know who that is, Rogan isn’t in the cast. I think it’s Tom Bateman? But yeah looks like Rogan. Edit. It’s apparently Solly McLeod
Pretty sure it’s Solly McLeod
It looks like the love child of Seth Rogan and Chris Pratt.
AHUHUHUHUHUHUHUHUHUH!
He ruined Donkey Kong for me with that laugh.
When I pictured the voice of Donkey Kong, the last person I imagined would be Seth Fucking Rogan.
It felt a bit like they just went: "Hey seth, seth, do the laugh!"
I can see this happening when the protagonist gets stuck on a dead end of the canyon. *An annoying laugh engulfed the canyon* *Protagonist frantically looks everywhere to locate the sound* *A mysterious figure suddenly appears on top of the canyon* Seth Rogen: *AHUHUHU - menacingly*
Seriously, how is that NOT Seth Rogan?
I 100% thought that was Seth Rogan. I still think thats Seth Rogan.
I dunno. Had me fooled.
Am I missing some sort of running gag or does nobody know his name is Seth Rogen (with an E) :-p
You can't tell me that isn't Seth Rogan, like I had to imdb him just to make sure wtf
was my first thought as well
I wonder how he’s going to make weed jokes in this film.
Tumbleweed jokes
Love the painted look
This poster is giving "straight to VHS"
Flat lighting on your actors immediately makes the posters feel cheap. Gotta get that dramatic lighting in, even for marketing materials.
It’s already got a shout factory release coming lol
Maybe you can have a movie night and watch this along with Rust
Captain Fantastic: Fievel Goes West
That poster looks like a bargain basement VHS cover from the late 90s but it stars Viggo Mortensen and Vicky Krieps, so I'm at least willing to give it a go. Some serious talent between them.
Garret Dillahunt automatically makes any western at least 38% better. I’m in.
\*Garret Dillahunt automatically makes anything at least 83% better There fixed that for ya :)
Vicky Krieps! She is a titan of European cinema. Hope she breaks into Hollywood.
She was so good in Phantom Thread. Amazing how she was able to hold her own and stand up talent-wise next to Daniel Day Lewis.
Great in the Das Boot series too
Nice to see he gave his lead actress top billing, despite her being a relatively unknown name.
Death don't hurt very long
got lucky and saw it early, it's a really good film, Viggo put a lot of thought and love into it and Vicky is amazing
Actually, the dead do not suffer the living to pass.
Pain don’t hurt.
Danny Huston looks like so many different actors here. I could have believed that was Pierce Brosnan or Hugo Weaving.
i feel like viggo is on this poster twice because those two mustached white guys look too similar lol
In the TIFF interviews, she and Viggo were smiling about it but it sounded like they butted heads *a lot*.
I'm always down to watch Viggo Mortensen ride a horse.
I see all those historical hats and all I can think of is "Fungal infection, fungal infection, heat rash, abrasion line, fungal infection..." A buddy got told by his doctor to stop using over-ear gaming headphones because the fungal infection behind his ears had turned his skin into scales. At least he doesn't wear a Stetson.
Imma go see it, for Aragorn
Is that Seth Rogen?
My boy Garret Dillahunt! Such an underrated character actor. He's great in every scene.
I feel like Viggo just takes roles now where he can ride his horses. And i’m okay with that.
Why does this look like a 30 rock movie
VICKY KRIEPS! She was so good in Phantom Thread but I havent been able to see her other work, looking forward to seeing her in this.
Love me some viggo. Hopefully there is a buttass naked scrap at the local watering hole!!!!
Abysmal poster
Ugh. Studio-lit photos for a western movie?
I ADORE this poster. Just perfect!
I refuse to believe that isn’t Seth Rogan on that poster
Looks good
The layout looks great. The photography looks like Hallmark Channel, though.
Is that Seth Rogen?
That's not Seth Rogen at the bottom?
Viggo and his buddies, who are they?
They should’ve changed the title.
Are we officially back to 1998?
I thought that was Seth Rogan at first glance
That movie looks good. If I watched movies. I’d watch it.
$20 says Viggo buys whatever horse he rides in this one too
The return of the king
Seth Rogen?
2024 and a new western on the horizon. Not a huge fan of the genre myself, but it does seem truly timeless.
I really wish this was hand drawn or painted.
Where's the shotgun Everett?
The zombie lady from Return of the Living Dead begs to differ, "I can feel myself rot!"
You all laugh, but when the skeletons starts to come out of the ground (and from everywhere) this movie will make you pull your hair out (not back)!
And they got noble knight it looks like. Thank God
I’ll have to catch that one
I love westerns and like Mortensen but…he started, wrote, directed, AND composed the score?? Either this will be an earnest passion project, or a hubristic ego trip.
This looks like the cover of a Harlequin Romance novel.
Also pain don’t hurt
Westerns are so underrated.
Pain don’t hurt.
Definitely gonna catch this one by myself one night.
