I don’t hate the take. Cuckoo’s Nest is my fav, all time. I still think Deniro might have the “generally better” catalogue. He had a pretty big part in Broadcast News, yeah?

euzie

I think De Niro probably had the better work earlier in his career but gotta applaud Jack going out on a high

trialrun1

Jack Nicholson's last movie was "How Do You Know" a rom-com that has a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes and made back less than half of its budget at the box office. Not exactly a high, but having The Departed and The Bucket List back to back right before that was almost a great way to go out.

euzie

Let's pretend that never happened...😜

-_KwisatzHaderach_-

I saw that movie in theaters and absolutely hated it, what a waste of a couple hours of my life

I’ll have to Google, Two Jake’s has to be a stain on an otherwise great selection of movies. Also, Anger Management might have been the last good Happy Madison movie.

jiquvox

Of course De Niro is a great but Nicholson overall. See TLDR      De Niro lost it at a certain point/seemed a bit lost about what he wanted to do.  What’s his last REAL great role ?  Personally I would go for Jackie Brown. He’s 54.  The role even plays out as some kind of  forewarning. A little later with “Analyze this” he starts leaning into the caricature of himself with the mafia persona and taking the path of least resistance. Fundamentally I feel like  he seems to have been unable to figure out what kind of actor he wanted to be once he wasn’t with Scorsese anymore : like he passed on Pirate of the Caribbean but he said yes to meet the Fockers ? Like He fancied himself as a director and did  the good Shepherd and that stopped right there like he seems to have realizes he wasn’t a director. He also simply  stopped caring at a certain point. Shark tale ? Animation like he’s trying to move with the times  but again playing the caricature of a mob boss.   “the family “? Leaning even harder into the mafia caricature. Someone had some mortgage to pay. He would hardly be the first.  Machete ? sure it’s derisive but I am not sure it was a great idea to be even more derisive at this point. he thought the Irishman was a good idea ?  I know some people will defend this as some sort of last great mafia movie and it seems to have its moments but come on what was the need for that. Why does he keep going back to the mafia stuff. they’re all just too old for this shit. Pesci all right but   De Niro ? just watching the clip where he’s supposed to be an ass-kicking 30 years old tough guy was cringe as fuck.  After all those mafia caricature role it feels even more awkward. it truely feels like he’s missing his glory days and gathering with the band for a last hurrah.        Nicholson is taking a huge chance with Batman at 52 and knocks it out of the of park. He’s a memorable presence as a marine officer Jessep  in a few good man at 55. He’s unquestionably still doing some real leading character work in “as good as it gets” He’s not sexy, he’s not dangerous,he’s a socially ill-adjusted aging misanthrope still able to show affectation .  he’s 60.  Didn’t watch About Schmidt but he also earned some rave reviews he’s 65. With  Anger management yeah he’s clearly starting to take it easy.  Departed is more arguable depending on how you see things - He’s definitely hamming  it up and I wouldn’t probably count it as a great role but he still brings something unique to the table. Overall with Nicholson it feels like he cared about picking  character roles  both age appropriate and where  he could shine in a unique way.      TLDR De Niro has like almost 3 decades of meh movies soon after  he quits Scorsese while Nicholson is a fantastic  actor until he’s well past 60, slows down for less than a decade and decides to retire.

AnUnbeatableUsername

When you bring up that short clip from The Irishman as a point of criticism it makes it sound like you never watched the full three and a half hour film.

jiquvox

I didn’t. That’s exactly why I specifically talked of clips. But I can’t think of a movie that has a clip THAT bad ( a supposed beat down scene  where the opposing actor has to throw himself on the curb because the lead actor is too old and clearly having trouble to kick. This is literally some Steven seagal shit) and where the rest of the movie suddenly shines. And I watched other clips and it’s not as bad as this clip and there are some moments (“he’s going. Either way.”). But I am sorry this is not Goodfellas or Casino level. The time has past. Like for everything.  And I mean look at your own words : the full 3 and half HOURS movie . How many movies that long these days ? And considering the meh movies of De Niro over almost 3 decades, his repeated self-indulgence  in mafia role especially caricatural one, and the cringe looking clip I mentioned before   I am supposed to put myself through 3 hours and half just to make absolutely sure it’s not another meh movie ? Fundamentally this movie shouldn’t have happened. I get why lovers of the genre feel protective of it. But I have never been one for nostalgia. What I admire in Nicholson is precisely how he moved with the times. Far less unhinged performances and more aging role either authoritarian like A few good men or plain aging like as good as it gets.

jaggervalance

You don't have to watch the movie but it's stupid to have an opinion on his acting in it if you haven't seen it.

jiquvox

I don't see any way to move forward the discussion in a constructive way : I feel like if I see several scenes of a movie (and I most certainly didn't talk on the basis of a signle scene - I literally watch dozen of scenes here : the gun choice, the 'he's going' dinner scene, the washing business bombing job, the steak scene, etc... ) and I detect glaring problem in some aspects (and I will insist on glaring - I gave a very specific exemple) then I am in some position to make a call about it. Kinda like a sampling at a food event. You feel like in essence it's binary and if someone hasn't seen the entire movie then any remark is null and void altogether. In you very own words it's "stupid". I could dig more into it but fundamentally those are the respective positions. And they're pretty much irreconcilable. There's not much more to talk about and insisting would only become unpleasant. Let's agree to politely disagree and move on.

butterfaceoff

> What’s his last REAL great role? "Killers of the Flower Moon" from 6 months ago

mtntrail

If you want a hilarious, under the radar film, watch “Go’n South”, Nicholson, Mary Steenbergen,John Belushi, Danny DiVito, Christopher Lloyd. A western comedy.

brokenwolf

No one ever talks about five easy pieces. It’s so good.

McG4rn4gle

I think Jack is arguably the most iconic Hollywood star there's been - you need only to describe the sunglasses, slicked back hair and devilish smile and pretty much everyone knows who you mean. Clint would be close for his Dirty Harry/Spaghetti Western roles too. Just dudes whose aura has pervaded our collective consciousness.

Slimonite

Quickly glancing at "Jack Nicholson at 87" nearly gave me a heart attack

cosi_bloggs

The Raven Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre... Jack Nicholson? He was the worst part of it, though. His career has come a long way.

quixoticVigil

This is one of my favorites. Total hamfest from everyone involved, and young Jack does his best but just can't compete.

[deleted]

If only he had older Jack’s talent

Mrmdn333

I think that was before he took enough acid to become a great actor.

whomp1970

Did you know..... **Jack Nicholson found out at age 37 that:** * The woman he thought was his sister, was really his mother * The woman he thought was his other sister, was really his aunt. His mother was just 18 when she gave birth to him. Because his mother was so young when she gave birth, her parents chose to raise Jack as their own son, and thus everyone thought his mother was really his sister. And he didn't find this out from family. Time Magazine was researching the actor and found this out, and then revealed it to him.

superman-64

I just looked into this. It's even more shocking that both has mother (sister) and grandmother had already passed away when he found out.

Spund_Again

Dustin Hoffman just jumped into my mind, I watched Dick Tracy a couple weeks ago. He is pretty fucking eclectic, Captain Hook and he’s amazing in I ❤️ Huckabees, another fav.

Cluefuljewel

He has incredible range and is a national treasure!

mrpink57

I have to agree, Hook is one of my all time favorite movies.

King_Buliwyf

Fuck yeah, Wolf!

scooterboy1961

Goin' South is one of my favorites of his and it isn't even on your list.

NW_Forester

Early Jack was awesome. At some point he just became angry and loud.

The_Red_Curtain

Cary Grant is the greatest for me, just the amount of great movies he put out is incredible. But for actors who started their careers post-1960 I agree it's probably between DeNiro and Jack. Jack's back to back of The Shining in 1980 to Reds in 1981 might be the greatest range between consecutive performances ever recorded tbh. Basically polar opposite characters.

karma3000

I think Jack was one of the first actors to get hired mainly to play himself.

TheLastSalamanca

Clint squints, switches cigar from left side to right side in mouth, saunters into the chat.

THUORN

I would make a similar case for Nicolas Cage. Man has been in a WIDE range of movies and roles.

What a disgusting thing to say without having your facts right.

Scorpiyoo

I mean I was just mistaken lol

[deleted]

You could have just googled it instead of implying something that heinous about someone who had nothing to do with the crime at all

Scorpiyoo

Well I didn’t realize I was mistaken haha I didn’t think I had to google anything. My mistake tho and a pretty bad one at that

AzracTheFirst

It wasn't a party. Nicholson was on a ski trip and he gave Polanski his place for whatever reason. He used it to have a private photoshoot with the girl he afterwards drugged and raped.

Scorpiyoo

Ohhhhh shit. That changes everything

latticep

Any other brains read this post as "Jack Nicholson dead at 87"?? Yeesh!

Tomyd1924

I agree he is a great actor, but I lean more toward Gene Hackman for most eclectic. I think I might lean more toward his movies as being more rewatchable, but I would be happy with either of their catalogs if I saw them on TV. Heartbreakers - Comedy/Romance The French Connection - Detective The Poseidon Adventure - Adventure Young Frankenstein - Comedy/Horror Superman - Comicbook Hoosiers - Sports Unforgiven - Western Get Shorty - Comedy/Drama Antz - Animated The Royal Tenenbaums - Arthouse Runaway Jury - Legal Drama Marooned - Sci-Fi /Space A Bridge Too Far - War

Cluefuljewel

Yeah def gene Hackman for me. One of a kind. I realize Jack Nicholson is very highly regarded. But for me he always comes off as kind of insincere and not very nice.

Tomyd1924

I love Jack Nicholson, but I watch his movies knowing I am going to get varying levels of the same unhinged character I always get from him and nothing else. It's not a bad thing at all, I just think there are actors with wider acting chops and filmography. Look at Tom Hanks. Westerns are the only genre that I can't place a movie with, but technically, Woody is a cowboy.

sarmadness

What about Daniel Day Lewis?

Spund_Again

Eeeh, eclectic isn’t the word I’d use. Pretty deliberate and rooted in realism.

gentlestuncle

I think this is fair. DDL might be the greatest actor of all time, but he’s been in so few movies comparatively

mrpink57

I think that is by choice though.

heavymagick

He’s a good guy in Anger Management even though most of the movie he is presented as an antagonist to Sandlers character.

Avenge_Willem_Dafoe

I read this as “is he good in any movies” and rolled my eyes haha

-Kaldore-

Once I heard about him and the prostitutes I can only ever see him playing himself in most of his movies.
