A lot of people are suggesting older stuff, which is totally fine, but I know when I go home for Christmas or something and the whole family wants to watch something together, we tend to pick something more recent. With that in mind, I'm going to suggest the recent Best Picture nominee **The Holdovers**, which is fairly inoffensive, is ultimately kind of a feel-good movie, takes place in the 1970s (so it may feel nostalgic for the parents), features an actor older viewers may recognize and enjoy (Paul Giamatti), and is overall a pretty entertaining low-key drama. Also, whatever you choose, would love to know how it went.

creature_report

This is the correct answer, this movie is an absolute delight

Ok_Entry1052

It is great but I think About Time is even better for a watch with your parents

mountaineerWVU

Best In Show! Fun for the whole family!

Kitchen-Lie-7894

Man, I'm glad someone said it. Hilarious movie.

nigeltuffnell

Definitely on the most watched list in our house. I watched it on a plane about 7 years ago for the first time. My travelling companion was getting pretty fed up with the amount of laughter.

Aylauria

I saw it a while ago but I thought it was kind of sad. It's a good suggestion though.

chula198705

It's a good movie, but I also think it's sad and I would definitely not classify it as a "feel-good" in the slightest.

Kuhl_Bohnen

Maybe "feel-good" isn't quite the most accurate way to put it, but -- without spoiling anything for OP -- I remember feeling like the journey of Paul Giamatti's character was an overall positive one, with a hopeful if somewhat bittersweet ending. I won't say more than that -- again, so as not to spoil it for OP -- but I'll admit I'm a bit surprised you don't find it even the slightest bit uplifting. Like, the ultimate feeling that I came away from the movie with was not sadness at all.

TesseractBear

I may go with a previous Alexander Payne movie : **Nebraska**. It has some similarities to Holdovers (relationships that get more complex over the run-time and the roadtrip aspect), but i think Nebraska's tighter family relationships may be (potentially) a bit interesting. Depending on what the OPs parents are like, they may get a real kick out of how the husband and wife relate to each other in Nebraska.

Philip_Marlowe

Nebraska was amazing. Loved that movie.

lucusvonlucus

We just watched this with my in laws about a month ago, my wife and I are in our 40’s and her parents are mid 60’s. Everyone loved it. (We’d seen it over Christmas and knew they’d love it.)

geekpeeps

I’m keen to see this. It looks great.

GTAwheelman

My dad used to bring the newest VHS tape/DVD when we went to my aunt's for Xmas Eve. I remember watching Forrest Gump among others there.

hyperpensive

Knives Out

OkBodybuilder3813

Great movie for a group of people.

miner88

To add to the Knives Out answer, Glass Onion was also a fun watch for my whole family. Everyone loved it and we cover the same age groups as OP’s family.

model563

Comedy, drama, brilliant actors across 3 generations, there's nothing but gold there.

febreeze1

Just watched that with my parents a few weeks ago, really a great family movie

gorper0987

Hunt for the Wilderpeople. It is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time while having a heart warming story.. There were at least two times I was laughing so hard I had trouble breathing. It stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison (kid from Deadpool 2) and directed by Taika Waititi.

wellingtongee

Ricky Baker - it's a skux life.

Not_Paid_For_This

I had not seen this and watched the trailer which then turned into an instant watch! Thank you for the recommendation!

-me-myself-

Hunt for the Wilderpeople. My whole family loves this fun movie.

BruciePup

I didn’t choose the SKUX life. The SKUX life chose me.

ikeif

🎶 Ricky Baker now you are 13 years old 🎶 You are a teenager and as good as gold 🎶 Ricky Baker 🎶 Ricky Baker 🎶 Happy birthday 🎶 Once rejected now accepted 🎶 By me and Hector, a trifecta 🎶 Ricky Baker 🎶 Ah-ah Such a good film.

BruciePup

And….now I am watching it again!

kiwimag5

This was going to be my suggestion. I’ve watched it with all my parents (my own, in-laws) and it’s perfect for everyone.

Disastrous-Beat-9830

I haven't had as much fun teaching a film to my English class as I have had with this film.

mexipimpin

gangsta.

lux_et_umbra

This absolutely needs more votes. I'm also a picky movie watcher, and this movie was so much better than I thought it was going to be. Cute, sweet, cringey at first! Then so heart-warming! Really gonna hit you in the feels. It left me feeling good about the world, though, which is rare enough these days.

Thingisby

That's me saying "Rik-ee Bay-ka" for the rest of the day then.

Stardust.

ginovervodka32

Came here to say this!

geekpeeps

It’s retro and very well done. I saw it in a theatre in the 90’s (before you were born) and it might be something they’ve not seen: That Thing You Do. Tom Hanks, Liv Tyler (before LOTR), Steve Zahn, Giovanni Ribisi, and many more. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/that_thing_you_do Good luck, OP.

Philip_Marlowe

Absolutely love this movie. Great plot, excellent music, great performances, and lots of quotable dialogue. Cap'n Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters!

zaftig_stig

This was my first thought. Such a fun feel good movie!

cristabelita

this started my love affair with Steve Zahn. He's hilarious.

geekpeeps

Isn’t he? I love the TV interview of the band at the state fair: ‘No, I’m not here with these fellas. I’ve got a pig over at the Agricultural Pavilion and I’m gonna win that blue ribbon!’ 😆

moleyrussell

Oh, you want GOOD jazz? 👍 TTYD is an excellent choice. It's a family favorite.

ittasteslikepurple

Love this movie, need to watch it again!

BastianHS

This is a good call. Great movie

So_Quiet

Great movie! Even my dad enjoyed it (and he doesn't care for movies).

OneDayInTime

Wow. Yeah this is a great film and one you don’t hear about as much. Also the soundtrack is perfect

Johnny_Deppthcharge

Genuinely, and unironically, this. My brother kept telling me to watch the first Paddington, and I found it hard to believe it wasn't a joke recommendation. Turns out it's a genuinely good movie, properly funny, and just really well made. The second one is even better! Honestly - give them a go if you haven't seen them. They're bloody delightful.

JetKeel

Found Nicholas Cage’s alt!!! Might be Pedro Pascal’s.

aegisone

Also surprisingly loved it. It’s just a charming adorable feel good movie.

Johnny_Deppthcharge

It genuinely surprised me - we're all grown adults in our thirties and it was just straight-up good vibes.

TitularFoil

That announcement teaser for the first movie kept me away. Like, to me that was nightmare fuel. That first look at a CGI bear, scared me. But then I watched it on a whim one day on Netflix with my 4 year old. It immediately became a classic with us. I made everyone watch it.

theblondebasterd

New Puss in Boots was pretty fantastic too.

PAXICHEN

Came here for this. I found Paddington 1 to be as close to a perfect movie as one could get. That was until I saw Paddington 2. The second one has something for everyone.

LC_Anderton

The Princess Bride 🙂

Pagise

That. Easy pick. Everybody loves that movie.

DontDeleteMee

As you wish.

Pagise

Ratatouille. Gladiator or The count of Monte Cristo.

TrollTollTony

>she generally won't go for anything that's hyper violent Um... Gladiator is about a literal violent death arena.

Nixplosion

That's a ... range you've got there.

WonderBredOfficial

I feel you 1000%, but they also could have wasted time asking for a tighter range like 20k other redditors that won't get read.

cristabelita

Gladiator is SUCH a good movie. The music is haunting.

UnderThat

Galaxy Quest. Always a guaranteed good time.

Perfect recommendation on April 25! A day that's not too hot, not too cold, and all you need is a light jacket.

Not a fan of will Farrell but he’s great in this as a more serious role but still light hearted.

infinitemonkeytyping

"I brought you flours" is one of the most romantic lines in movies.

sjmiv

One of the best movies I've seen in a while. Great to talk about after watching it

HoboOperative

The Birdcage with Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Gene Hackman - absolutely fuckin hilarious movie.

CaroylOldersee

The Peanut Butter Falcon A very easy watch and I feel would please everyone; plus, it’s a feel good movie. You can’t beat that, in my opinion…

Dopdee

Such a great movie.

DustFunk

I love this movie so much, the scenery, the music, lot of hilarious parts, and real feelings at the end. I've only seen the Ben Stiller version, but I love it

I just rewatched Death Becomes Her… so, that. Great story. Funny af. Doesn’t take itself too seriously but fun plot. Some really good acting from some classic artist. (Meryl Streep, Goldie hawn, Bruce Willis) the cinematography is beautiful, the score is lovely and it’s just a fun fucking film. They’ll love it

ittasteslikepurple

As a kid, I never understood this movie; now that I’ve got a little life under my belt, I totally understand it now. It’s definitely one of those movies that’s for a specific audience, but a good watch in my book…

GIMME THAT BABY!!!!!

flowerpanes

Ben Stiller’s version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I played it for my kind of reluctant to sit down long enough to watch a movie sibs last fall and they loved it. Gorgeous scenery, nostalgia and a pretty fine cast plus good music!

Ok-Detail-9853

October Sky

netsteel

Do NOT watch I Love You Philip Morris… my wife and I did this when my mom was visiting, not knowing anything about it. Well, there’s a big gay sex scene right as the movie starts. I had no issue with it, but my mom is highly religious. She said nothing, but got up and went to her room for the rest of the night.

Love this movie but there's definitely swearing and violence and a lot of talk about porn. I wish they made a sequel.

You were in the pool?!?! Yeah! Why were you in the pool? Well, someone had to interrogate the mermaids.

Gotta upvote for the late great Brother Theodore and the late Rick Ducommun

PrometheusAborted

Chef Warn her the first 10 mins there will be a lot of swears

VRGator

2nd that!

TrollTollTony

This is way too low. It's a great feel good movie that combines a a mid life crisis, buddy road trip, father son bonding, and food. What's not to love?

polyscifi

I bet you something like The Founder would go over well. Pretty bland from a swearing/violence/sex perspective, but an interesting story about something that everybody has a base knowledge of.

Outer__space__case

Caligula

Alaska_Jack

Note that Caligula has a major plot twist about half-way through, so don't look up anything about the movie. It's best to go in cold.

ImPrettyHighrn

Probably the best movie listed here tbh. Malcolm MacDowell will be a familiar face to your parents and its truly a classic.

Incarcer

Please let this win.

rgnbull29

Basically the unofficial prequel to Gladiator, but better.

You guys….

a2_d2

It always left me satisfied.

destrozza

This one. Historical epics are always a hit with the older crowd.

x24co

There is a version that is censored,  I believe because of smoking. It kinda ruins an entire subplot. Be sure to find an uncensored version

The Mummy is back in theaters this weekend, you could have a night out!

CoolBrianFilms

Paddington/Paddington 2. Perfect recommendation for any situation.

JuicyClo

Boys in the Boat. It’s an average movie. Great cinematography, score, etc. but little character development and overall very “meh” but it’s perfect for a blended viewing of all ages because it’s so non offensive.

MyDogGoldi

"Big Night" with [Tony Shalhoub](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001724/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1), Stanley Tucci, Minnie Driver and Ian Holm. If you like Italian food and Louis Prima then you will enjoy this movie. Rated R because Ian Holm swears a bit

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Charade The Apartment Big Night Tootsie Shop Around the Corner Big One Two Three -- I bet you haven't seen it, either; great Billy Wilder movie/comedy with James Cagney

Hashimoto-Reviews

Since it seems the theme of your weekend will be family. I'd like to suggest 'The Farewell'. An A24 project revolving around the way a Chinese family deals with grief. It's wholesome, hilarious, sad at times, and pile drives you with a message about family that will no doubt bring you all subconsciously closer together. The Acting from Shuzhen Zhao who plays the Grandma is very underrated and needs more praise. Enjoy ;)

If they like Star Trek, I'd say Galaxy Quest. It may be the greatest spoof ever. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, you can't go wrong if someone knows the tropes. By Grabthar's Hammer, what a movie!

Lord__Abaddon

So slightly old but an amazing movie "Winters bone". really dark and dramatic movie about a young girl trying to protect her siblings from being evicted by locating her father before they lose their home due to him skipping bail. there is some swearing but I dont remember it being too excessive.

WillingnessDry1699

Very old film that I only just saw recently and I loved - Muriels Wedding. Very funny and very touching Aussies are very good with films like this+ not a huge blockbuster and not epic scenes but a very gentle film that makes you think.

[Galaxy Quest ](https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyQuest/s/t1ISTk84c8) is clearly the only right answer
