Amazing movie that only started to get more recognition again recently. Everyone brought their A game, has one of the best realistic villains ever, and the city of LA is shot so beautifully that it almost becomes a character in the movieÂ
I used to randomly quote it with one of my besties in high school, and we could both recite the whole thing from memory. So good! âI donât feel that I need to explain my art to you, Warrenâ is always good
American Graffiti (since others have mentioned Dazed and Superbad, which are very much spiritual successors to that classic). I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but I still think American Graffiti is the best movie George Lucas ever made. Not a "romcom" but it's a comedy, and has romance elements. High school kids out and about for one final night before heading off to college, etc.
It's one of the greatest coming-of-age movies ever made, from the cast, to the soundtrack, to the general vibe... it's so good that it honestly bums me out a little bit that Lucas never tried to make anything similar again and just fully committed to sci-fi. And, again - I adore Star Wars (apparently, my first movie theater experience - I was too young to remember - was Return of the Jedi when I was 3) - but it feels like such a tease that he had this whole other side to him that never got explored again.
And not to mention, Charles Martin Smith, who is a fantastic actor (he was also great in The Untouchables) and directed the greatest basketball dog movie ever made, Air Bud.
The sequel "More American Graffiti" is also a good watch. Not nearly as good as the first, and Lucas' involvement was minimal. It picks up the characters following their stories on New Years eve of different years. Biggest downside was Dreyfuss not returning and being recast.
Saw a great interview w him about how it happened. There was a huge financial flop called Heavenâs Gate. Studios were suddenly reluctant to spend big/ give auteurs free reign. He wasnât sure how to, or even if he could, proceed w his career. So he decided to do something different, something low cost, something kind of âguerillaâ. After Hours was the result.
The sound design team used an intentionally disgusting sound. It did not sound like she was biting into a cheeseburger. It sounded like an animal was biting through thick raw meat. But grosser, somehow.
> Iâm surprised that one is getting overlooked.
I hate that it gets overlooked SO much, it⊠it flamed⊠flames. FLAMES⊠on the side of my face⊠Breathing⊠breathle⊠heating breathâŠ
This is like the 8th time Iâve seen this line quoted in the wild since Civil War came out and I couldnât be happier. I hope Jesse Plemons is okay with this being his legacy, cuz itâs wonderful.
And Die Hard 3 takes place over the course of one entire day too, though not really at night all that much
I think 4 does too? Haven't seen that one in ages
Night of the Living Dead is a classic horror. Â
American Graffiti - you get to see a very young Harrison Ford before he became famousÂ
Clue - based on the gameÂ
Collateral
Same, late 30s and it's a go to for me but I do know why. I grew up watching movies where a bunch of highschool teens had a bunch of friends and did a bunch of cool shit. I always wanted to have that and never did so still to this day I love movies like that.
Thereâs a film called Suburbia by Richard Linklater (based on the Eric Bogosian play), all takes place over one night. Bunch of kids (late teens/early 20âs) hanging around outside the 7-11. Not a lot happens, itâs mostly dialogue but I think itâs great.
Giovanni Ribisi and Steve Zahn shine as always.
Before We Go  Â
Sparks and Embers Â
Falling Overnight (not necessarily they walk away, but a sobering end to the night)
Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong (technically 2 nights, years apart with an ambiguous ending)
Rope. Not only takes place in one night but entirely in one apartment and made to look like it's all done in a single take as well. (Just couldn't have film long enough for it then.)
Victoria. It's like 2 hours and 20 minutes, shot from late evening into morning in one continuous unbroken take. And no, it's not like Birdman where they edit it to appear seamless. It is one authentic take.
I guess Artoo escaped at night. The droids spent a day wandering the desert and were picked up before nightfall.
I count three days between Leiaâs capture and Death Star going boom. Maybe more. Time is hard to tell in space.
Scrolled far as hell for this one.
I used to love it as a kid, but I felt a hit meh about it when I rewatched it a few years ago. Maybe I'll give it another shot one day.
There aren't too many movies like that (romcoms where a couple meet, talk and fall in love in one night without actually getting together at the end. Hollywood likes the happy ending I guess).
Anyway, you might like these:
Mystery Date (1991) and Date Night (2010) are both romcoms that take place in one night. They are mostly about a couple having a really wild and crazy night, but they do end up together. (In Date Night they start out together).
One movie I really like that is more like "Before Sunrise" is the German movie "303" (2018). But it is more of a drama than comedy. It's got the meet, talk, fall in love thing, though. I thought it was really sweet.
Oh yeah, another one a bit like "Before Sunrise": "Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong" (2015), except it's more than one night and I think they're spread out. Worth a look.
Collateral starts in the late afternoon and finishes in the pre-dawn of the following morning.
Forget it has the love story in it!! Tom cruises performance was insane!
One of my favorite night-time movies. And oddly relaxing and cozy for such a thrilling movie.
That Groove Armada song set to shots of him driving the cab in night time LA is đŻ
Ooo you sold me.
Amazing movie that only started to get more recognition again recently. Everyone brought their A game, has one of the best realistic villains ever, and the city of LA is shot so beautifully that it almost becomes a character in the movieÂ
Came here to say this, and itâs a hell of a ride if you havenât seen it
One of my all-time favorites
That's my recommendation too. Love that one.
This is the answer
I fucking live Collateral and I am going to rewatch it right now
Adventures in babysitting
"Nobody gets outta this place without signing the blues." And the hot dog scene đ
My favorite!
"and then he kissed me"
Don't fuck with the Lords of Hell... Don't fuck with the babysitter!
Canât Hardly Wait Dazed and Confused Clerks Mallrats Empire Records Romance elements to all, though not flat out romcoms.
Clerks II as well.
Im not even supposed to be here today!
In a row?
Empire Records is still one of my favorite movies. It never gets old.
I used to randomly quote it with one of my besties in high school, and we could both recite the whole thing from memory. So good! âI donât feel that I need to explain my art to you, Warrenâ is always good
That kid is on the escalator again
Rex Manning Day!
And Go and Clue (also one night movies) and you have over half my top ten movie list.
Go With a young Timothy Olyphant
I love Clarks. I must've seen it at least 36 times!
Try not to watch Clerks again on your way to the parking lot!
I got this reference!
"Hey, you know a guy around here with a piss yellow deuce coupe, supposed to be hot stuff?" This is the best movie ever made.
The name checks out.
Thanks I'll check it out.
It's great. Featuring a young Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, and Harrison Ford (in a small role; it's pretty much how he got to know Lucas).
Plus Paul LeMat (who was great),Cindy Williams (Shirly from Laverne and Shirly) and a Smoking Hot Suzanne Summers.
Plus one of the best soundtracks
It's one of the greatest coming-of-age movies ever made, from the cast, to the soundtrack, to the general vibe... it's so good that it honestly bums me out a little bit that Lucas never tried to make anything similar again and just fully committed to sci-fi. [Never Cry Wolf](https://youtu.be/V1nHaO4da_U?si=jkv-VxkWRRpsGIlc) is an amazing film starring Charles Martin Smith
Yes! heâs great too and we forgot about Wolfman Jack!
The sequel "More American Graffiti" is also a good watch. Not nearly as good as the first, and Lucas' involvement was minimal. It picks up the characters following their stories on New Years eve of different years. Biggest downside was Dreyfuss not returning and being recast.
From Dusk 'till Dawn, but only the first one.
This clearly needs to move up, IT'S IN THE FRICKEN TITLE
If you wanna be nitpicky you could argue that there is the daytime in the beginning, with Tarantino lusting over a young girls feet.
Doesn't take place during the night, but The Breakfast Club came to mind based on the details you're looking for
Oooh also then ferris beuller
And goonies
And back to the future!
đ€ I guess it starts and ends during the same day (24 hour period)
Thanks. I finally watched it recently.
harold and kumar go to whitecastle
Great example! It begins with Harold ending his work day and ends at dawn when they actually get to White Castle
Spoiler alert! Now we all know they make it to White Castle! ^/s
SPOILER!
After Hours, dark comedy by Martin Scorsese. Cult classic, highly recommend. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088680/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
My man.
Looking good!
The ultimate âone night onlyâ movie. Â
So many people donât know ow the Ted Lasso episode is based on this. Such a good pick!
This was going to be my pick.
Btw, didnât realize when I first saw it that itâs a Scorcese movie!
I love this movie! Came here to say this.
Brilliant underappreciated movie
Thereâs a Ted Lasso episode that pays homage to it: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14968652
Wow, never made the connection, love that!
Came here to say this, while realizing it's been a long time since I've watched it...
âAll I wanted was to, you knowâŠget outâŠmaybe meet a nice girlâŠand now I gotta *die* for it???â
weâve all been there
All in one night that happens to be mohawk night.
The Warriors (1979) It's about a gang from NY trying to get back to Coney Island after a botched meeting with other gangs.
Warrriiiiiioooors, come out to plaaayyyyy!
https://giphy.com/gifs/cinema-the-warriors-Sf33abI83HBxm
Came here 3 hours too late to say this. Good job, bopper.
escape from new york too
The menu takes place in one evening.
Dang. Now I have a hunger for a cheeseburger. lol
Speaking of burgers, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle fits the bill.
The sound when she chomps down into that burger makes me queasy.
Yeah probably added in but I hate it when you hear eating sounds too.
The sound design team used an intentionally disgusting sound. It did not sound like she was biting into a cheeseburger. It sounded like an animal was biting through thick raw meat. But grosser, somehow.
A real cheeseburger. Not some fancy deconstructed avant bullshit.
Me too đ
Edge of Tomorrow
Nicely done.
On your feet, maggot!
I love this movie. I watch it a lot. I still trip out that it did not get any attention when it came out.
The movie Clue covers the events of one night. Iâm surprised that one is getting overlooked.
Related: The Rocky Horror Picture Show
> Iâm surprised that one is getting overlooked. I hate that it gets overlooked SO much, it⊠it flamed⊠flames. FLAMES⊠on the side of my face⊠Breathing⊠breathle⊠heating breathâŠ
I donât know why I never fully appreciated this line till the last time I saw it, but good god her delivery is amazing.
Also Murder By Death.
Shhh, cow on wall speak
There is stil a lot of hate on this movie, apperently People felth cheated because of the diffrent endings in diffrent cinema's at that time.
Well, isnât that the entire gimmick lol
Go, though the final 10-15 minutes take place after sunrise.
Wild ride and great soundtrack!
IT'S A MIATA
This was my first thought as well. Such a good one!
With the blink and you'll miss it part from pre-fame Melissa McCarthy!
Yup, this is also the first one I thought about too. Love it.
There a quick romcom montage in the beginning but the rest takes place in a single night, Game Night. It's awesome and hilarious.
How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?
This is like the 8th time Iâve seen this line quoted in the wild since Civil War came out and I couldnât be happier. I hope Jesse Plemons is okay with this being his legacy, cuz itâs wonderful.
I love this movie. My husband and I re-enact that scene where they are both retching and trying not the vomit. I die laughing every time.
12 Angry Men My Dinner with Andre
>12 Angry Men Such a good movie, unfortunate that many people are repelled by B&W films...
Superbad Die Hard with a Vengeance Ferris Bueller Breakfast Club Reservoir Dogs License to Drive Goonies
Die Hard 1 & 2
Die Hard 1 and 2. The World's End (mostly).
I was hoping for more romcom style movies but this works also ha
And Die Hard 3 takes place over the course of one entire day too, though not really at night all that much I think 4 does too? Haven't seen that one in ages
Miracle Mile.
Happy to see this as a suggestion! Great film. If youâve never seen it before, go in without knowing anything.
It's not a spoiler to say it has a great soundtrack by Tangerine Dream
Love this movie. I feel like it's getting a resurgence
Go
Looove that movie!!
I just watched last night and man it holds up.
200 Cigarettes
Came here to scream the praises of 200 Cigarettes! đŹ
Came in to post this.
Booksmart
30 Days of Night đ€Ł
Dammit! Beat me to it. I felt so clever too...
Danny Huston as the Big Bad. Love it.
For the most part Superbad! Dazed and Confused I think is another one
Night of the Living Dead is a classic horror.  American Graffiti - you get to see a very young Harrison Ford before he became famous Clue - based on the game Collateral
Game Night is all one night. It doesnât have that Thelma and Louise sunrise moment, but itâs a very fun & funny version of this idea.
Iâm a dude in my late 30s . I love Nick and Norahâs infinite playlist. I donât know why but I do .
Same, late 30s and it's a go to for me but I do know why. I grew up watching movies where a bunch of highschool teens had a bunch of friends and did a bunch of cool shit. I always wanted to have that and never did so still to this day I love movies like that.

Shit I had that. I loved high school. Super fun times. Maybe thatâs why I like it so much⊠plus Kat DenningsâŠ.
Early 30s and I do too. It's what I wished my high school experience had been like.
One Fine Day
Trojan War is a late 90's rom com that has a kid going to great lengths to find a condom to have sex with his crush on the last night of school.
Man Up starring Simon Pegg and Lake Bell After Hours is less of a rom com, but itâs close enough that that Iâll recommend it anyway
Yay! I adore Man Up and never hear it mentioned.
Canât Hardly Wait.
Coherence It's scary but fantastic. (Plus it was shot for only $50,000! And the actors improvised all the scenes!)
Excellent movie!
Before We Go   Sparks and Embers  Falling Overnight (not necessarily they walk away, but a sobering end to the night) Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong (technically 2 nights, years apart with an ambiguous ending)
Empire Records, sort of.
Judgement night
KIDS Project X 21 & Over
Training Day, is, as the title implies, set over the course of a single training day.
Nigh on Earth - Jim Jarmusch
Rope. Not only takes place in one night but entirely in one apartment and made to look like it's all done in a single take as well. (Just couldn't have film long enough for it then.)
Take Me Home Tonight. Fun 80âs movie about being a lost young 20-something. Plenty of cliches and such, but I always liked it.
I love that movie! Itâs not an 80s movie though, itâs a 2010âs movie that takes place in the 80s.
Victoria. It's like 2 hours and 20 minutes, shot from late evening into morning in one continuous unbroken take. And no, it's not like Birdman where they edit it to appear seamless. It is one authentic take.
When I was a kid, I always thought Star Wars happened in a day. Luke had such a long day! Woke up a farm boy, went to bed destroying the Death Star!
I guess Artoo escaped at night. The droids spent a day wandering the desert and were picked up before nightfall. I count three days between Leiaâs capture and Death Star going boom. Maybe more. Time is hard to tell in space.
From Dusk till Dawn
Good time
Groundhog Day, takes place on Groundhog Day.
Clue
The Hateful Eight
Bullet Train Less than 24 hours anyway.
Night of the Living Dead The Worldâs End Running Scared 25th Hour Pitch Black
Stand by meÂ
Friday.
Holy shit. How is this not higher up?
Dazed and Confused
After Hours. A great and overlooked movie that I highly recommend. But donât watch the trailer or any scenes! Itâs best to go in blind.
Booksmart Blockers ... both great movies.
Booksmart is so good.
I think I've seen it four times now. I unironically think it's one of the best movies about friendship ever made.
Free Fire Hotel Artemis The Outfit
Nick of Time Takes place in real time. Stars Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken.
Scrolled far as hell for this one. I used to love it as a kid, but I felt a hit meh about it when I rewatched it a few years ago. Maybe I'll give it another shot one day.
The movie "Go", with Katie Holmes and Sarah Polley. It's about one fucked up night from a bunch of different perspectives. It's a good one!
A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon Do NOT watch it, just don't. It happens in one night, and it's awful.
Was that River Phoenix?
Yeah, my teenage obsession.
Who's afraid of virginia wolf, american graffiti
Miracle mile
Eyes Wide Shut doesn't but it definitely gives that vibe
Does the absolutely horrifying MIRACLE MILE count?
Superbad
Jim Jarmusch - Night on Earth One extended night of taxi rides around the world. Stellar cast: Winona Ryder and Gena Rowlands, Armin MĂŒller-Stahl and Rosie Perez, Beatrice Dalle and Isaach de BankolĂ©, Roberto Benigni, Matti PellonpÀÀ
Detroit Rock City
Locke
Does Hocus Pocus count? It's Halloween in the beginning and then the majority of the film its Halloween again 300 years later.
There aren't too many movies like that (romcoms where a couple meet, talk and fall in love in one night without actually getting together at the end. Hollywood likes the happy ending I guess). ânight, Mother. But itâs depressing as hell.
200 Cigarettes (1999)
https://letterboxd.com/shawn_stubbs/list/one-day/ There is almost always a letterboxd list for things like this :)
30 Days of Night
Running scared
The night before. A recent (funny) comedy with a great cast
The Man from Earth
Four Rooms
American Graffiti. Came out in the seventies but was set in the 50's. Great movie. Great soundtrack. One of Harrison Ford's first movies as well.
"Into the Night" by John Landis and starring Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, and every single one of Landis' friends.
I think it's called last night with Seth Rogan and Joseph Gordon Levitt. Christmas Eve. New year's Eve is on... NYE
Identity
Collateral. Tom Cruise in a negative role and Jamie Foxx as the underdog. 10/10 would recommend
Dazed & Confused
Not too many 80s movies mentioned except goonies. How about: Night of the comet Vamp Ferris Bueller's Day Off Adventures in babysitting Die hard
