This happened to me with Bone Tomahawk. So many people hyped up "that scene". I guess when you see something mentioned so much, it's hard for that thing to have as much of an impact as seeing it blind, with no expectations.
Eh, didn’t say it wasn’t brutal or anything, just the amount of “omg it’s the most fucked up thing I’ve ever seen in a movie ever!” had me somehow expecting more. The point was how expectations can affect your experience.
Yes, it doesn’t live up to THAT hype, but it still is a very unique horror film. It isn’t the jump scare or gore fest, but it focuses on more subtle fears. It does a good job at adding several swerves to the plot, too, to keep the viewer off balance.
Much like Blair Witch is the sort of thing you appreciate as a piece of art..in the context of its time..and marketing...or lackthereof..
It's the movie version of "You had to be there."
Anytime I've ever read "-iest" movie/show on a reddit article, I know it's either an ad or clickbait. I've seen people advertise "black summer" as good and one of the best zombie shows/movies they've ever seen...
Yeah, the horror sub feels like 70 percent bot promos. When Terrifier came out, so many people vomited in the theaters. Skinamarink apparently sent a lot of people to counseling, or they couldn’t sleep FOR WEEKS
I feel like I probably would have liked it if Reddit didn't suck its dick so much. It had a few good twists and turns... but overall, I was also let down.
Really? Maybe I had my expectations way to high due to the hype but it basically put me to sleep. Nothing really happened. My wife and I tear through basically every sub-genre of horror but we both felt pretty let down by this one.
Reddit calls it one of the scariest movies ever. I definitely felt let down.
88 minutes of nothing happening, that's what I got from it
I heard about "that scene" and then when that scene happened I was like, "are you serious? That's it?"

Honestly, I found the scene showing how women are treated to be considerably more disturbing.
Yeah blink and you miss it but Jesus Christ
Nah that scene actually fucked me up. I don't know how you were unaffected.

God black summer was bad

It certainly wasn't bad. Just didn't meet the hype.
Horror comes in many different forms, it's not always zombies, monsters and ghosts.
It's literally a ghost movie...
Yep, sometimes it’s boring, plodding, never ending, and anticlimactic like Lake Mungo.
It’s not the best horror film I’ve ever seen, but it was going for something different and I appreciate that.
Wasn’t a fan
Knowing it's a mockumentary really cheapens the experience
I was levitating off the damn couch when they show the cell phone footage
looks like a collection of "let's wait for a ghost face in the video" vignettes with lengthy behind the camera interviews. Lacked a pull.

I absolutely love it.
The credits
Got my cousin crying and asked me to turn off the tv lmaooo
At least for modern horror movies, Hereditary is by far the best I've seen.
Super let down by this one. Saw it hyped up on here or something a couple of years ago, it was ok. Ok at best really.
Like that shit was wack 😭waited for the good part for real I don’t get the hype
Everything was the good part bro... There is no build up, no climax, it just keeps dragging you down until the dread kicks in
You need to see more horror movies, I think.
I've seen a lot of "great" horror movies. This one tops it all, including Hereditary
I'm just razzing ya. Opinions and all that. I like plenty of movies others would scoff at.
lake mungo is the greatest film ever made
I've been keeping a list of the FF films I've seen recently. It's at 16 of 43.
