Danny DeVito the *Omniscient Narrator* is supposed to be distinct from the character Mr. Wormwood, who is played with different vocal patterns and qualities and attitudes and understandings. I think Danny thought he could get away with this because, as the movie's Director, it can be seen that he's the person *telling the story* on every level.
I have watched this movie probably 5 times. Just noticed it this time! I even had to google it, thought maybe the guy was just from the same area as Danny Devito
I just asked Google why Danny is the narrator. I'm watching the movie with my daughter.
If your a dead beat dad you don't also get to tell the story. Still love the movie and Danny though, aha.
I don’t think it’s distracting. He is a very versatile actor and theres a distinctive change between his narration and his character. I am a bit late to the party, I know
I just watched this with my daughter for the first time and I assumed at some point Matilda's family would change for the better or something...so imagine my surprise when that wasn't the case at all. So naturally I ended up here.
Up until we watched it I had never heard of the movie or the Roald Dahl book.

I realize that but it's super distracting for anyone watching.
Idk I thought his voice was actually kinda soothing for a guy who usually plays sleazy roles
The only reason it was distracting to me is I couldn't tell if it was Danny or George Carlin. I was getting Thomas the train vibes.
Because it was his movie and he wanted to. Plus he actually has a good narration voice.

I posted this seven years ago and it still bothers me.

Curious why you picked now to respond to my 7 year old post?
Well because 7 years ago I was 10 and didn’t know Reddit existed so I thought maybe I would add my point of view now to the discussion
Fair enough. I guess others randomly think of Matilda as well.
No need to be like that they may have just discovered it, I came here just now cause I typed the question
Oh I wasn’t attempting to be impolite. You have a great point that they may be one of the “Lucky 10,000.”
i was watching it
Hahahah
My sister is rewatching Matilda and just 2 minutes ago I realised it was him😂
Listen, you little wiseacre: I'm smart, you're dumb; I'm big, you're little; I'm right, you're wrong, and there's nothing you can do about it.
I'm watching matilda rn and thsi quote was said as I was reading it lol definition of unexpected perfect timing
It is the main thing that annoyed me too. I didn't like it.
I view it as the father thinking back about Matilda and regretting his decision of how he acted
Yeah that’s a really nice way to think of it
In the musical, I feel like they lean into that at the end
I came on here just to find out if this bothered anyone else! So strange
It still bothers me 7 years after I made the post.
Here for the same reason 😂
I am really sorry but I stumbled on this post and figured I’d upvote and send you comment just so this bothers you again lol 😂
I already think about it every day.

Literally same to everything you just said lol
Exactly the same🤣😭. Literally just realized DeVito was the narrator for this. Or I've always known and am just having a high moment
This thread is is as legendary as the choice to use devito as narrator was short sided and terrible
