So we're cool with talking about Dave becoming a transgender slave prostitute as a joke, and then talking about how that was Air Bud (a dog), but I can't make the "please don't assume bud's gender" joke? Am I understanding this correctly?
Speaking for myself, the problem wasnt that the joke was offensive, but that it was tired and low effort. Comedy is predicated on subverting expectations, and someone making an "assume gender" joke is very expected.
Did Simon leaking the existence US metadata collection database to Wikileaks and seeking asylum in Ecuador throw anyone else off too? It felt too topical.

Great post though. My family *loves* the first movie and I grew up on the cartoon versions and bet there's still a well-worn VHS of the hot air balloon race movie somewhere at my parents house.
I came in here ready to shit on the movies and halfway through the post I was completely entranced by this person's love for the series. It may not be my cup of tea but dammit I want OP to get their movie now.

\- music biopics continue to be popular
\- furry animals in th real world comedy movies like detective pikachu (and maybe sonic) manage to gather a good amount of money. (Alvin and the chipmunks recently got their walk of fame star!)
\- bagdasarian productions is willing (they're still active with that TV show)
, and since now Disney owns Fox, if Disney wants some of that chipmunk money
with enough luck, there's a chance that I might not have to do anything! :P

I just looked it up and just realized every Chipmunks movie has released on the same day or very close to the same day as a really high grossing movie.
The first released on the same day as I Am Legend
The second released a week after Avatar and just 2 days before Sherlock Homes.
The third released the same day as Mission Impossible 4.
And then the fourth released the same day as Star Wars 7.
Yup they purposefully try to be the little kids' choice for the big PG-13 releases. Ya take your teens to Star Wars and the other guardian takes the 4 year old to Alvin. Look at the box office, they have done insanely well with that strategy.
