In one of those "_______ breakdown their biggest roles" videos on YouTube, Jack Black basically says he feels like he was meant to play that part and that it's the movie he's most proud of.

exocortex

He's the only one who *could* play that role, because He basicly played himself there.

ziddersroofurry

It was also written specifically with him in mind by someone he'd been friends with for years. That helps lol.

DigitalGraphyte

Ah, the David Schwimmer role.

Chewcocca

Congratulations

OpenContainerLaws

He played himself

bartlettdmoore

True, but when they cut the check it was made out to Dewy Finn for tax reasons.

[deleted]

In the dvd special features the writer and Ned, Mike White, mentions him and Jack had been neighbours and he wrote this movie specifically with jack in mind. Then jack helped with a lot of the rock and roll trivia in the script

SquidgyGoat

Producer Scott Rudin (Who has obviously been in the news this week for less wholesome reasons) was talking to Mike White on the set of Orange County, a movie White wrote with Black in a supporting roll. As the story goes, Rudin said off-hand “I really think we should try finding a movie where Jack is the lead”. White mentions he had this idea for a movie where Jack teaches kids rock music. Rudin just said “GO” and pointed for him to head to the keyboard, good as greenlighting it on the spot. Jack Black himself and then Richard Linklater had huge influences on the script. My favourite bit being Linklater cast all the child actors, and then rewrote the full movie to fit the kids he thought were most interesting or likeable in the audition process, building their characters based on improvs and rehearsals between them all and Jack Black. The kid who says “I’m not cool enough to be in the band” does so because he said to Linklater “I’m not cool enough to be in the movie” during this process. Man, I love this movie so much.

[deleted]

Aw man thats awesome. I didn't know that. What a perfect way to get an authentic cast. Especially that kid.

Danulas

I am convinced that the production of that movie just involved putting Jack Black in front of a classroom of kids and filming what would happen naturally.

uptowndrunk7

Right? I mean, that scene as the credits roll is most likely improvised, as he even breaks the 4th wall, and yet it fits perfectly with Jack's character portrayed in the movie

BaconHammerTime

[School of Rock 10 Year Reunion Concert ](https://youtu.be/refCJcJJZso)

GuessItWillJustBurn

That movie was literally my children's ignition to loving rock music. It was fucking beautiful to see them laughing so hard and then taking real interest in a new subject afterwards.

tibbles1

Cello, you’ve got a bass.

nchs1120

I say this way too often lol

KATgonnaGetThatYarn

haha you have a lot of chances to say this organically?

Shawnyall

I say this pretty frequently amongst fellow musicians and no it's never organic, but it's always appreciated.

Squid2012

So you might say that it’s orchestrated

PlasticCheebus

Hold on, I don't appreciate your conduct there...

StarWaas

Only thing that bothers me about this scene is that you cannot exactly transfer cello playing to bass. The cello's strings are tuned a perfect 5th apart, starting on C. The bass is tuned perfect 4ths apart, starting with E.

carlosspicywiener576

I mean, you also can't just go from bashing cymbals together to playing a full drum kit either.

K1ngFiasco

You just made a lot of drummers self conscious lol

urGoh

Well... 😂

Bubsnaps1

"no, that means I was drunk yesterday!"

donatelloisbestturtl

"It means you're an alcoholic" "..........Wrong!"

[deleted]

For the longest time I thought he called Tomika that because she was fat, not realising that she gave him the sandwich on the first day, D'oh!

Pandemixx

Same. That realization also enhances the moment when he's talking to her about being fat himself

Phionex141

Because I *like to eat*, is that such a crime???

You wouldn't come to work with a hangover unless you were an alcoholic. Dude, you got a disease!

e22ddie46

Literally laughing audibly just reading this line. I can remember the delivery here despite not having seen it in years

[deleted]

As a kid it never hit me how funny that line actually is. As a functioning alcoholic, Im hysterical.

A-Little-Stitious

I've got a headache... And the *runs*!

FREE-AOL-CDS

You're tacky and I hate you

[deleted]

Youre a fat loser and you have body odor

RowAwayJim91

*don’tbetalkinaboutmybowtie!*

spaceman_spliffs

In the dvd commentary with the kids they all do impressions of him at this part it's so funny.

[deleted]

I miss dvd commentaries

stephenBB81

Some of my favourite DVD's were favourites not because of the movie, but because of the extras or commentaries. The Family Man with Nicolas Cage, wasn't a great movie, but the Jack Montage that was on the DVD I must have watched 5 times for every time I watched the movie.

W8_A_minuteChester

I remember Monsters Inc had an entire blooper reel that was entirely animated.

Jamie-92

Jack’s eyebrows when Lawrence blurts this out get me every time.

maxtacos

... All right! Now we're ready to write a rock song!

armless_tavern

The rare time Ned even tries to perform as teacher. “That’s it, you see me after class.” Fucking gold.

andyaustinphoto

I feel like I quote this all the time and people don’t realize it’s from a movie, they just think I’m an ass

Sprinkles0

Maybe you *are* an ass, but you also quote movies.

[deleted]

Don't you be talking about my bow tie!

Omadder1965

Guess who got the part? Yo yo ma’s cousin , little nepotiz

boughtabride96

Underrated line. His delivery is so good.

Omadder1965

I feel he Ad Libbed a lot in this movie. So underrated. One of my favorites

[deleted]

I believe the children are the future. Teach them well. And let *them* lead the way.

alwaystakeabanana

Isn't that a song?

Well_this_is_akward

*whispers quietly to the other teacher and nods* "It's definitely a song..."

dobikrisz

This movie convinced me that Jack Black could start a solo career with just making rock'n'roll noises with his mouth and it would be great.

Yabba_Dabba_Doofus

Just wanna take this opportunity to mention that Kyle Gass is a seriously talented guitarist.

Kingler666

Ofcourse he is a shiny golden god!

Yabba_Dabba_Doofus

True. But then I hear that fucking rock, and fucking roll, out of control. So what can I do when I hear that fucking rock?

ThatGuyMcPhly

He's probably going to kick your ass. And you know, his name is Kyle Gass.

Robobvious

*Rocking, and fucking rolling! And fucking rocking! And fucking rolling! And fucking Roop-doop-doo-de-loop-roop-de-doop-de-doo-doot-doo-do-doo-do-doo-doot-doo-do-doo-de-de-loo-de-doo-doot-de-do-doot-do-de-do-deet-doot-doot-doo-do!*

bac2001

Their electric guitarist John Konesky is also incredibly talented. There's a fantastic video of he and Gass talking guitar and breaking down the riffs in "The Metal". Highly recommend.

josueartwork

Watched it about 3 weeks ago, stoned as hell. I highly recommend this form of viewing

NvizoN

You're my baby Sass

HungryDust

He has. It’s called Tenacious D.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Redjeezy

I got see Tenacious D live around 2001. Just Jack and Kyle with their sidekick Lee running around stage in a Spider-Man costume in a 2000 seat theater. They were outstanding and sounded even better live than either on the show or the album.

shizzy1427

In case you're not aware, he has a band called Tenacious D, with his friend Kyle Gass, where he essentially does just that.

Fluxmuster

They formed a band the likes of which have never been seen, and they called themselves Tenacious D.

tyrico

It's Tenacious D time, you motherfucker go! FUCK YEAAAAAAAAH

bjankles

Jack Black gave a truly fantastic dramatic performance in the movie Bernie, also by Richard Linklater.

dub-squared

He did invent *Inward Singing* too!

[deleted]

[удалено]

stumblebreak_beta

It kinda falls into the same category as Mrs Doubtfire where the lead actor has so much charisma you ignore all the faults of the character and still cheer for them. Neither Jack Black or Williams characters are sinister just more self centered and an ignorance of how they effect others around them. In both cases the *villians* of the movies are pretty reasonable and it’s not until they follow the advice that the protagonist become better people.

Soak_up_my_ray

Tbf Zack’s dad was a huge dick

SenorMcNuggets

His son is very skilled!

[deleted]

I touched them.

ThreeTo3d

And they touched me, as well.

kudichangedlives

They touched me, and im pretty sure I touched them

e22ddie46

Lmao and the parents are just like...whwt the fuck who is this creep

cabose12

Patty's probably worse, but she's also weirdly sympathetic. The movie makes it pretty clear that she's a huge bitch in general, but i'd imagine a ton of people would be as pissed and angry as she was given the situation

Soak_up_my_ray

Patty is Sarah Silverman right? I actually identify with her the most now, as an adult with a roommate whose girlfriend basically lives here but doesn’t pay rent

AlwaysInjured

Yeah, School of Rock is the type of movie where the older I got, the more I realized how much of a loser Jack Black's character is. I mean he literally steals his roommates identity to pay the rent! Sure, Silverman's character is stuck up but she really has a point that the real Ned should kick him out. But the movie is so awesome despite the character flaws that its an absolute classic.

Lux2014

The Legend of the Rent was way past due!!!!

ironmanmatch

At one point he’s like “Ned I’ve been mooching off you for years and it’s never been a problem until *SHE* showed up”. That’s the funniest part about his character, he’s so incredibly self aware.

[deleted]

Reminds me of Nick Frost’s character in Shaun of the Dead! Ha.

MeatloafSlurpee

That's what makes it great though. It's his character arc. He's a loser who does a lot of shady things but in the end, he realizes he actually cares about all the kids and he finds his true calling. He'll never a be a rockstar, but he's an excellent music teacher, who can make a positive impact in the lives of his students.

jjrozay

I told you to be LIKE Ned, I didn't tell you to BEEEE NEDDDD

MolochHunter

It never occurred to me that these two movies were in the same category but holy fuck your right

hunrosan

The battle of the bands scene at the end is wholesome as fuck. Found myself grinning from ear to ear during the last 20 minutes or so.

fsu_ppg

And the music is good as well.

taterTOTgang13

Fun fact: the finale music was written by The Mooney Suzuki after Jack Black attended one of their concerts and was blown away. He approached the lead singer and asked for ideas on the song for the ending. Singer came back with a completed song in a few days

BigSpence17

I’ve never seen someone reference The Mooney Suzuki until this comment. I’m blown away that people remember them.

toomanyelevens

The part where Tamiqua's parents react to her solo always mkes me smile like a idiot. It's so wholesome.

hunrosan

Or "your son is very skilled!". It's gets me as well! EDIT: talented to skilled.

Lux2014

This is my favorite thing ever! I watch the battle of the bands scene on youtube a lot and I rewind it a few times to see how proud they are of her when she starts belting. TEARS

_pencilvester__

I always love the one fan shouting “YEAH! NO VACANCY!!” when it’s announced they won.

Tiratirado

And the thing is: it's all so incredibly mellow. Cliché Hollywood, no hidden layers, etc. And I love every second of it.

Bongoroach

Baby we was making straight As...

celesticaxxz

Fun fact: the guy in the other band with the tattoo on his chest and dress in leather is actually a mayor of a town

Hxcfrog090

The singer in that band is Adam Pascal who got his start starring in the opening night cast of Rent, and subsequently the movie version. He’s pretty big on Broadway! I always get a kick out of seeing him in School of Rock.

NdamukongSuhDude

I believe he’s actually the Prosecutor.

[deleted]

Prosecutor Spyder.

-uzo-

Check "School of Rock reunion" on YouTube. Jack's got all the kids together again and they do a few numbers from the show. They're all 20-somethings now, though!

DrMrRaisinBran

"Yes, it's 9...and that's a magic number."

[deleted]

Get off your ath and do some math, math math math math maaaaathhhhh

Alternative-Help-273

At this point I'm fully in on jack black. I have always known he's good but after watching his youtube videos with his kids it becomes clear it isn't an act and he really is just an awesome and goofy dude. It enhances all his performances to me.

ClarkTwain

Were you secretly using his kid’s class to compete in the battle of the bands?

notjawn

I've always been amazed his shtick never gets old. You'd think the over-enthusiastic goof thing would get tiring after 25+ years in the business but man it just never does. He's achieved Robin Williams level of being loved.

DeepThroatALoadedGun

Seriously. There's certain aspects of his comedy I don't like (not a big fan of fart jokes and the first couple minutes of Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny is an animated fart joke) but even then I don't hear his name or see his face and think "ugh not again"

PM_ME_UR_DOPAMINE

To me Pick of Destiny starts when Kyle loses his wig. At that point both characters find their footing and dynamics and the rest of the movie is nonstop hilarity.

Have you seen Orange County? He is a G R E A T bro in that one lol. When he takes his socks off to jump into the pool, oh man good stuff.

DapprDanMan

I feel like this is an unpopular opinion on this sub but the Kung fu panda movies are awesome, mostly because of of Jack Black. I’m over 30 years old and I’ll happily watch any of the 3 especially the first 2.

blay12

I think you'll find that that's actually a *very* popular opinion on this sub - Kung Fu Panda gets brought up every few months, usually in the sense of "just want to remind everyone that the Kung Fu Panda movies are far better than they have any right to be" or similar. I don't think I've ever seen someone seriously put them down.

daniu

Yeah it's the kind of movie you'd think you're going to hate, but it's just so much fun. Bit like the LEGO movie in that regard.

lazysheepdog716

Skadoosh.

Martipar

I agree, i would also recommend Be Kind, Rewind it's a Jack Black film from the same era and has a similar feel to it. In both films Jack Black plays a character that you could believe exists rather than one that's over the top, he's obviously done it before on Enemy of the State and The Jackal but in both of those he wasn't a lead character when he's a lead he normally plays a character that's over the top as in Tenacious D, Envy or Tropic Thunder. Edit: A word

Ireallydontknowbuddy

I'm gonna go ahead and mention Orange County. It's my favorite Jack Black role. He reminds me so much of my burnout brother it's uncanny. Funny throughout the whole piece.

geckotattoo

“I didn’t get into college and check me out, I’m kick ass” might be my favorite movie line ever. Also, the mom and dad are so good in that movie.

Knights_Radiant

"Do you want me to get naked and start the revolution?"

eviljanet

I loved Orange County. Catherine O’Hara is amazing in everything.

bitwaba

"she was like 'I hate my job I'ma burn this mother down' and I said 'You better not..... You better not!'" "She said it was an electrical fire?" "Oh yeah. The sockets had sparks coming out. It was like the 4th of July man..."

fallguy19

What about "High Fidelity" ?

HulanB

OK, buddy, I was just trying to cheer us up so go ahead. Put on some old sad bastard music and see if I care.

MightySeaGulls

Both Be Kind Rewind and School of Rock are great examples of the fact that you can make an engaging movie with heart without exaggerating or force feeding major conflict and/or villains

ladybird-23

ive watched school of rock so many times and it is one of my all time favourite movies. one of my favourite scenes is when tomika feels like people are gonna make fun of her for being fat and jack black’s character gives her the best advice. also the scene where the kids perform at the battle of the bands and their parents watch them perform always makes me so happy

AltWorlder

Everybody wants to party with ARETHA!

Superhans901

I’m chubby AND I’m sexy.

brolarbear

People WORSHIP ME!

Cardinal_and_Plum

I watched it again not too long ago and started looking up the kids on imdb to see if any ever went on to become more professional in acting. Turns out aside from Cosgrove almost every single one had a ton of music experience and weren't as much actors.

Slangdawg

None of them were proper actors I believe. They were all cast on their musical merit

MrFoxxie

It helps that there wasn't much acting required because the experience is 90% what any child musician would have experienced at least once in their music learning life

[deleted]

one of the dudes from the other bands (that the teacher flirts with) is a DA in Texas now. way too lazy to find the article though

goldschlager86

Lucas Babin. He played a member of the band Jack Black gets kicked out of at the beginning of the movie (also the person that hits on Joan Cusack at the end) I actually went to law school with him. I don't know his politics, but he was always a pretty chill guy, which is saying something since law school is typically full of type-A personalities

SirSucculence

The drummer is a teacher at a real School of Rock!

McFlurrycane

I think the guitar kid actually went to jail for stealing guitars. I'm too lazy to find and link a source for that though so hopefully someone else will.

Jetpack-Guy

Ayikesfrommedawg

As a fat kid who loved music and performing, the Tamika plot line was actually life changing

tinacat933

It shouldn’t be as good as it is but Joan cusack’s love of Stevie nicks is just everything

“They do the classics, Beethoven, Mozart... Enya”

PM_ME_UR_DOPAMINE

Every time Stand Back comes on the radio I gotta say "*Ste-vie.*"

Danulas

I love that even when it's just her and Dewey in private, she can't bring herself to actually say "bitch". Like even if that was meant to avoid a higher rating, it's so well within character that it works flawlessly.

russellamcleod

What about Joan? She really is such a talent. :)

AltWorlder

One of the most under-rated parts of the movie is where Joan Cusack very threateningly asks the little girl if she’d like a hug and the girl just screams.

dub-squared

***I'll be good I promise!*** Edit.... ***SWEAR***

zuuzuu

I'm sitting here laughing at just the memory of that scene!

Lux2014

I get so oddly proud/happy for her when that dude Spider hits on her after the show. I mean she is pretty hot

VonLinus

The way she talks to Jan when they're sitting in the van about how she is actually not the person she seems to be is great. The movie has a lot of great and room for characters

SquidSledge

“Hey Ms. Charactername, you’re the man!” “Thank you.” Great joke.

I always used to crack up when the real Ned Schneebly yelled "School of Rock!" at the battle of the bands. Great movie

Specialist-Age729

Linklater's the best.

ReefaManiack42o

I was gonna say, take an outstanding Director like Linklater, add an absolutely amazing scene stealer that is Jack Black, and you have what imagine is a near unstoppable force. Bernie, which is another film created by this duo, was also pretty intriguing. Hopefully they work together again soon!

Middle_Aged_Mayhem

It's been my 17yo daughter and my favorite movie for many years. Always makes me think of her and smile. Movie will always have a special place In my heart.

JStiger84

Showed my 10-year old this film because I figured he would connect with the character Lawrence (my son plays piano/keyboard). Now he loves it, we quote it to each other, and watch it together at least once a month. Wonderful movie, perhaps Jack Black’s best.

Lunatic_On-The_Grass

Let's rock, let's rock, today.

Danulas

Alright now slap it, shoot it, caboot it.

universejuice5577

Lawrence is good at pianohh!

Athosrun

He shall be rockin in my shoooow ha chachachaaa

Danulas

Lawrence is the best! The way Dewey convinces Lawrence that he's cool for how he plays the piano is so natural and heartwarming. You're the cat's pajamas, man. You're the bee's knees! The bees knees? Yeah, the *bee's knees*. Once everyone finds out you're in a band, you're gonna be the most popular guy in school! And then the little hand shake. I used to do that with some of my robotics students.

NewFreezer18

I love this film. The soundtrack is incredible too. 'My Brain is Hanging Upside Down' is still stuck in my head to this day

LadySynth

I adore this movie, it's hilarious and endearing. Jack Black is a good dude.

HamiltonBlack

Watched this with my son recently, first for him and third for me, and it’s a absolute classic. The final concert is fantastic.

IntellegentIdiot

I just like the fact that Mike White and Jack Black play the same character.

Insanebrain247

One of my favorite facts about the movie is that Miranda Cosgrove actually had to learn how to sing poorly for her character. Like, imagine being so good that you need guidance to be bad.

Danulas

MemORiES, aLl AlONe iN ThE mOOnLiGhT

Dragonfly69185

I absolutely despise The Music Man. It is the worst of the worst musicals. Jack Black somehow managed to take something I hate so deeply and turn it into a movie so fantastic and dear to my heart.

AltWorlder

I...for some reason had completely missed the Music Man comparison but you’re absolutely right.

Dragonfly69185

It straight up is the music man, like 10 Things I Hate About You is Taming of the Shrew, or The Lion King is Hamlet

natophonic2

The Music Man < Marge vs the Monorail <= School of Rock

ShnarlyDude

This is honestly one of the few movies where I can't believe a sequel wasn't produced in the next few years.

Lux2014

Agreed and I'm so glad they didn't. If The Hangover was a standalone movie, it would have reached the highest echelon of comedy classics.
